Work Text:
"HOO, HOO HOO!"
You groaned as the chipper voice of your alarm woke you up, weakly raising your head from the pillow. You shouldn't have been surprised seeing so many 'Happy Birthday!' messages, though it was like the only time people would text you.
Seeing your deadname more times than you could count really stung, gods, people just hated change. With a sigh, you left the comforting warmth of your piled blankets.
Winter was just starting to set in, so you made a mental note to pack gloves as you dressed yourself. You made a coffee, silently praising the alarm for doing its job for once. After a grabbing a banana, you quickly left the house, coffee and snack in hand.
The drive put a damper on your mood, red lights were a bitch to deal with. The pre-winter chill seeped in through your windows. You pulled in the parking lot, locking your car as you walked away.
You shrugged off your jacket as you entered, the harsh contrast in temperature nearly overwhelming. The clock told you it was a little later than you had hoped, but you didn't care. At least you made it, right? You rushed to the daycare, tired legs protesting at the exertion.
The welcoming double doors stood before you as you made it down the stairs. You slowly raised a hand to knock, unsure where the nerves were coming from.
Knock knock knock!
You yelped as the door flew open. Sun was practically buzzing as he saw you, rays spinning as he took a step back from the door, Moon stood a little farther back. It took a moment for you to notice the large cake Sun held in his hands..
"Happy birthday!~"
"Hello Starlight, happy birthday my dear."
"Wh- Sunny- Moony?- What is this-"
"You're very special to us, you know that, so we baked you a cake!"
"Chica baked it, actuall-"
"SHHH HUSH UP YOU!"
You laughed at their antics. "Thanks boys, you're so kind! I.. wasn't expecting anything, you didn't have to-"
"Oh, but we did. You have been nothing but nice to us, it's only fair we return the favour, is it not?"
You hated how that made your eyes water, they were being so sweet, even (sorta) making a cake for you. They were two nice, you didn't deserve that much effort. The two noticed the building tears. Moon cupped your face with a hand, wiping your wet eyes with his thumb.
"Now, now, no tears sweet thing. We've stalled long enough, let me take your jacket, come in."
Oh right. You almost forgot it was a work day. Gods, why were you so emotional today?
Moon took your hand and led you to the security desk while Sun covered the cake. Kids started flooding in the moment you sat down, Sun thrusting a large badge against your chest.
You looked down at the badge in your hands: 'Birthday Boy!' You attached the pin, smiling at the first group of kids as they left the ballpit. The two greeted the little ones, the noise levels started rapidly rising.
Moon stayed by your side a few more moments, but had to leave you as the kids became a little more than Sun could handle alone. You briefly checked the cameras for any oddities, before also stepping away from the desk.
The crafts table was always your favourite, it was quieter, save for a few of the more eccentric kids. You were doodling pictures of Sun and Moon while making idle conversation with a little ones at the table.
"So it's your birthday today?"
"Heh, yeah, it is!"
"How old are you?"
"Oh, er.. I'm [age]."
"Wowza, you're old!"
You choked on your spit at the comment, turning away and coughing into your elbow. Jeez, kids really had no filters. Looking back, you saw the little girl who had piped up with the.. interesting comment. Her head was cocked to the side, having watched your sudden coughing fit.
"Mister Y/N, you're not sick are you?"
"Wh- no no kiddo, I'm fine. Just surprised me."
"'Cos I called you old?"
"Pft- yeah. Yeah, that."
She giggled, a hand covering her mouth as she grinned at you. You couldn't help but smile back, before getting back to drawing. Picture after picture, anything that came to mind was drawn on that page: Sunny, Moony, you, stars, rainbows, shapes of all sorts.
Sun called out into the daycare, taking the attention of you and all the children gathered around him.
"AAAAALRIGHT STARS! Now, last night, Moony and I made a special something for a special someone's SPECIAL DAY! Oh, Y/N~ come hereee, we're gonna sing you the Birthday Song!!!"
He led a jumbled chorus of little voices as he uncovered the large cake, letting you finally have a good look at it. Its one layer was split in the middle, one half had a gradient of orange to yellow, the other had a marble-like mixture or purple and blue, spotted with white stars. The cake was topped with a sun and moon decoration, red icing spelling out 'Happy Birthday Y/N!'
The moment the song finished, kids started calling out for pieces.
"Can I have some cake?"
"What flavour?"
"Is there egg? I'm allergic.."
Sun shushed the group. "No need to worry your little heads, this cake is sugar free, egg free, and there's more than enough to go around!"
The group cheered.
Moon ushered them into a neat line while Sun handed you the knife. "Patience little oness, he still has to cut the cake."
"Yes yes! If the knife comes out dirty ya have to kiss the closest boy!"
You noticed Sun scoot closer to you as he spoke. The kids took quite a few steps backwards, making faces at the comment.
"Ewwww, kiss?"
"A-ANYWAY! Y/N, you should go on and cut the cake, go on, cut it!" Sun stuttered.
You nodded, cutting down the centre of the cake, careful not to touch the bottom. Guess your mum's weird superstitions rubbed off on you. Pulling away the knife, you saw it was covered in cake crumbs and icing. Well, duh.
Moon stood by your other side as you were cutting the cake, both the boys standing beside you, one on each side as you revealed the dirty knife. Cheeky bastards. You looked between the two, Sun leaning in expectantly.
"Oooooh you have to kiiiiisssssss!" A little girl, Sadie, giggled.
A blush crept up your cheeks as all the kids started chanting "Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" You looked around the room, worried about any adult seeing the chaos, and how you, Sun and Moon were being viciously shipped by a bunch of five year olds. Okay yeah, they definitely needed to shut up.
"Alright, alright- I- I'll do it just- quiet down a little, yeah?"
The kids cheered, though more subdued. You gave Sun a chast kiss. He squealed, his rays spinning happily. Gosh, you really had to kiss them in front of the little ones.
After you pulled away from Sun, Moon spun you and grabbed you by the hand, his other tilting your face to look up at him.
"What about me, Starlight? It's only fair I have my turn~"
Well to be fair, they were standing just as close to you, only on opposite sides. With a sigh, you glanced back at Sunny.
"Okay, okay. Sun, just- pass around the cake please?"
He gave a goofy salute. "Yessir, I will!"
The kids gathered around Sun, quickly forgetting about the kiss, as expected of children. Moon sat on the edge of the security desk and pulled you into his lap. He smirked as he tapped his lips. You rolled your eyes, but leaned in to kiss him, barely any of the kids taking notice.
Moon winked at you as he pulled away. "Now, how about some cake?"
"I- yeah- yeah, sure-"
You slid off Moon's lap and walked up to Sun. "You said these were sugar free, right?"
"Oh, yes! Yes, of course!"
"Alright.." You mumbled, staring at the ground.
Sun cut another piece of the cake and placed it on a paper plate. He gave it to you with a small smile, which you struggled to return.
You ducked behind the desk and looked down at the cake, you felt gross just seeing it. God, the numbers on the scales were bad enough, imagine how you'd feel after binging on cake and sweets. If the sweetness didn't make you throw up..
Moon placed his hand on your shoulder, pulling you from your thoughts. He cleared his throat as you looked up at him. "It's almost naptime, you can eat in the breakroom if it feels more comfortable."
"No, it's okay, just.. no appetite."
"...Very well. There's always leftovers for later. Ah, and we have a few gifts we've been dying to show you."
"Oh?"
"Buuut, we should wait until the children are asleep.."
You nodded as you poked at the cake, catching some of the icing on your finger to taste it. Surprisingly sweet, you made a note to ask Chica about the recipe. You looked back up at the kids, each enjoying a piece while Sun skipped around with a broom to collect the crumbs.
Moon sighed, also watching Sun make his rounds. You both found it amazing how well he worked, even with a bunch of chaotic kids. He soon noticed he was being stared at and looked up to meet your eyes, smiling as he waved at you and Moon. You waved back, whereas Moon flustered, pulling his hat over his eyes.
As promised, naptime soon rolled around and the jesters swapped their positions, Sun sat on the desk beside you and Moon prepping the children's sleeping arrangements. Sun bounced his crossed legs as he looked between you and the sleepy little kids, practically buzzing with emotions you couldn't quite place.
He brushed his fingers through your hair as you reluctantly dug into the cake, the grumbling of your stomach making you give in to the tempting dessert. It was so light and airy and so easy going down, okay now you definitely had to get the recipe.
Sun poked your nose after you finished.
"Didja like it? Didja, didja??" He whispered, mindful of the kids.
"Pft- yes Sunshine, of course I liked it."
"Ooh that's good, very very good, great even! Moony and I helped decorate, he is so very creative, made the galaxy!!"
"That's lovely, he really is creative, huh?"
"Yes yes, just one more thing to love from him! I needed a bit of help from Chica for my side, I don't really do cakes that well.."
"Aw, that's okay hun, you did the best you could, and I think it's gorgeous!"
Sun's cheeks flushed, a funny little facial upgrade they had recieved during your half year of work. His rays spun as he processed the compliments, his adorable mannerisms made you giggle.
"Wh- really??"
"I don't think he's lying, Sunny."
Sun squeaked, Moon taking up the space behind him and patting his head. You took Moon's free hand as he leaned in, fingers intertwined.
"Heya, Moonshine. What happened to watching the kids?"
"Asleep, all asleep, such tired little stars."
"Oookay, just keep an eye on then, yeah?"
"Of course."
"Now.. You said you had a gift? I couldn't help but be curious."
Moon nodded, looping an arm over Sun's shoulder. "I'm glad you remembered. Sun, could you go get it please?"
"Yes sirs!" Sunny leapt up from where he sat, giving a salute as he gave you and Moon another look.
You watched as Sun sped away, almost tripping over all the sleeping children and toys strewn about. Moon perched on the desk and chuckled as the pattering of Sun's footsteps faded.
It took a while, but Sun soon returned, holding a cute little gift bag. The bag had all sorts of colours, a wild burst of rainbows. Sun plopped it on the desk, urging you to "Open it open it!!"
You laughed as you reached into the bag, feeling for an object inside. You pulled out a shirt, a picture of Sun and Moon printed on it, you hugged it to your chest as you looked up at the two.
"Thanks you so much! Oh, I'm gonna be wearing this one a lot I bet."
"So glad you like it, Dewdrop, but-"
"There's more, dear."
Oh. Oh, yeah.
You pulled out two more of the items in the bag, a set of pens and pencils, and a decently sized sketch book. A little note on the book read: 'An artist needs his tools! :)' There weren't any more presents in the bag, you looked up at Sunny and Moony with a goofy smile.
"Aww, boys, you're too kind!"
"Ooh ooh! There's one more!!"
"Wha- really?"
"Our handsome little lamb deserves to be spoiled rotten, it's only fair."
You blushed, you never really understood why they treated you so well, but it was more than welcome.
As Moon spoke, you noticed Sun reaching a hand behind his back, pulling out a small velvet ring box. It was embroidered with a moon and stars, the silver thread contrasting the deep blue of the material.
Your jaw dropped as you saw the decadent box, the feeling of the velvet beneath your curious fingers was so soothing. Before you had the chance to ask, Moon reached out to open the box.
Inside, two rings sat on the box's cushioned interior. One was made of gold, sun-like rays etched into it, the other was made of silver, a dotted texture surrounding a crescent moon and a few small stars. You were frozen as you took in every beautiful detail, too scared to take them out of the box in fear of breaking or losing them.
The two acted before you could, carefully picking up the rings and slipping them on your left ring finger. They connected with a small click, the moonstone on the gold ring fitting into the gap in the silver crescent moon. You stared at the two-part ring in awe, tears welled up in your eyes.
This is wrong you don't deserve this you could never do anything to deserve this why did they do this?
Sunny and Moony noticed the tears instantly and held you close to them, you were pressed up to Moon's chest, Sun against your back. The two cooed at you as the tears streamed down your cheeks.
"Oh, Sweetheart.."
"Whatever is the matter, Lovebug?"
You sniffled, whining into Moon's chest as they held you tightly. You could faintly smell the lavender oils he would use to help calm the children.
"It- it's bea-utiful- t- too mu-uch- I don't d- deserve i- t-"
Sun rested his head on your shoulder, rays retracted so he wouldn't poke you. "Honey, you do deserve it, you deserve it and so SO much more!"
"He's right, deary. You are our entire world. What's a sun and moon without a galaxy to hold them?"
"I d- ca-can't mean that m-much to y-ou, ri-ight?"
"We would never lie to you, honeybee."
"Mmph.."
Moon started up his music box to relax you further, Sun heating up as his arms enveloped you. You steadied your breathing as the two cuddled with you, dried tears sticking to your cheeks.
Naptime flew by, and before you knew it, the bright lights were back on. Moon stayed by your side as Sun went to wake up the little ones, holding you close as the lights strained your eyes.
"Do you need a break, Starshine?"
You nodded, staying quiet, Moon hummed, picking you up. You wrapped your arms and legs around him like a koala as his cable rig lifted him, taking the two of you to their room.
Moon gently set you down in their nest of pillows, patting your head as he sat by your side. "A little emotional today?" You nodded again.
"Don't want to use your words?"
You shook your head.
"Alright. Here, rest your head."
He gave you a pillow to lie down on. You took it gratefully, lying down on the pile. Your sore eyes stung as you tried to stay calm. Gods, crying was exhausting.
Sun's excited rambling woke you up.
Wait... You'd been sleeping? For how long??
You sat up, Moon stirring beside you at the sudden movement, you were still in the nest, though the daycare was now quiet. The plush pillows shook from how tightly you were holding them.
Did I just sleep through closing?!
"Sun.. What time is it?"
He perked up at the sound of your voice, stuttering as he turned around to see you. "O-oh!- Woah your voice is really d-deep eheh-"
"Answer the question."
"U-uh- well- you were asleep when the- and-"
"The daycare is closed, so is the Pizzaplex. Sun was too scared to wake you."
You groaned and rubbed your eyes, kneeling as your eyes properly adjusted.
"So while I was sleeping, not only the daycare, but the whole Pizzaplex closed for the night? You know I can get fired for staying after hours, I don't even have anyth-"
"Shhh, it's fine Sugar. We have plenty of spares, you have a bad habit of leaving your clothes here."
God damn it. Okay yeah, you did stay over fairly often and sure, you also lost at least one item of clothing at these 'sleepovers', but you still needed to get back home... but you couldn't get caught on camera or otherwise, or else you'd surely have a meeting with the boss.
Moon chuckled at your frustration, wrapping his arms around your middle. Sun also crawled over, sprawling across the nest beside you.
"I'm sosososo sorry for leaving you to sleep, I thought you might be able to stay the night..?"
You sighed. "Well it's not like I have much of a choice, huh?"
"That's right, Sunshine. You're stuck with us~"
You tugged at Moon's head, pulling his face close to yours. "I think what you meant to say was you are stuck with me."
The two practically tackled you, falling against the pillows. You caught a glimpse of light reflecting off the ring they gave you, the brilliant gemstone shining brightly.
Theirs.
