Ryan knocked on Esposito’s door, but was surprised when it wasn’t his partner who opened the door.
“Ana.” Ryan said surprised.
“Kevin, come in!” Esposito’s sister said enthusiastically.
“So, where is Javier?” Ryan asked as he entered Esposito’s apartment.
“He’s running some errands. He wanted to make dinner.”
“Aah, always taking care of everyone.”
“That’s my brother.”
Ryan didn’t answer. He just smiled and sat down at the dining table right over Ana.
“Have you heard of all the attacks on homosexuals in the city?”
Ryan didn’t know what prompted Esposito’s sister to talk about that, but he answered: “Yes, of course. It’s terrible that’s still possible in the 21st century, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is. Javier always thought we didn’t like him being gay, but that was never the case. Mum and I were just afraid something could happen to him. Luckily he’s a buff guy and no one wants to mess with him. Some guys tried to bully him once and he beat them all up. At least, that’s what he told us.”
“What now?” Ryan asked. He was sure his face showed the confusion he was feeling. Confusion and… Hope?
“Hey Ana, I’m back.”
“Hey Javi, you have a visitor.” Ana said as she walked over to him to help him with the groceries.
“Oh hey, Kevin. Do you want to stay for dinner?”
Of course Ryan wanted to stay for dinner. And after that, he’d have a talk with Esposito. And maybe he wouldn’t walk back out of this apartment as a single guy.
