“We’ve been looking everywhere for you!”

Startled, you nearly dropped the box of cake from Madam Scream’s bakery onto the concrete sidewalk. “Simeon?”

He sprinted up to you, his eyes flickering with fury unbeknownst to demons and humans. “Where have you been?” he asked, his voice in a hushed but threatening whisper as he snatched the box out of your hands and tossed it recklessly onto a nearby bench. Through the clear plastic panel, you could see that the gorgeous icing decorations were ruined by the jostling.

“I’ve been cooped up from homework and classes all day,” you explained, “so I thought I’d take a walk downtown and get everyone a snack.”

“And you didn’t think to tell anyone?” His voice raised in volume, his eyebrows furrowing into a glare as his arms crossed over his chest. “You thought that you, a human, could walk into downtown Devildom for dessert and not tell any of your fellow classmates where you were going?”

“I wanted it to be a surprise and—”

“You’ve deliberately placed yourself in danger! And for what? A cake that I could bake for you at Purgatory Hall?” He snatched your wrist and swept you from the sidewalk directly back toward the dormitories while leaving the destroyed dessert behind. With any luck, Beel would sniff it out. “You’re a human! Didn’t you see those demons sizing you up?”

Cocking your head to the side, you stumbled to keep up with his rapid pace. “No, but—”

“You could have disappeared without any of us knowing what happened to you,” he continued, sweeping you through alleyways and shortcuts as though he knew the way back to Purgatory Hall through them. “Solomon and I have been searching for an hour. We were about to call Lucifer to send out the entire House of Lamentation. Don’t you understand what could have happened?”

Simeon pressed you into the alley wall firmly, a hand on either side of your shoulders. “Now that I’ve got you safe and sound,” he whispered, a bead of sweat running down his temple, “I’m so relieved you’ve not been hurt. I can’t imagine what life would be like without you.”

The feel of his breath running across your cheeks sent a strange flurry through your chest. “I’m sorry,” you said, averting your eyes. “I forgot it was so dangerous.”

“I understand,” he replied, his gloved palm brushing over your cheek as he leaned closer. “I was so scared for you.”

And just like that, his lips pushed against yours in a binding kiss, enough to warm you from the outside in. The moment you responded to the gentle touch, he hummed and grasped at your face as though ensuring you existed, you were safe, you were in his arms. Chest against chest, tongue against tongue, so close that his hair stuck to your forehead as he pawed at your clothing in desperation. For what, even he seemed not to know. He wanted more. More of you. Whatever he could take, all of it, in a rush of passion that was no less than a venial sin if not more.

“Father forgive me,” he whispered through snatches to your shoulders between sloppy attacks of his swollen lips to yours. “We need to stop, or…” He hauled you closer until you swore you’d huddle beneath his clothing, and perhaps that was where he wanted you most.

“Simeon…” Your voice came in the form of an angel feather drifting between your noses, softer than the petals of a rose and more fragile than blown sugar glass.

“Just one more minute,” he breathed, nuzzling his cheek against yours before inching lower. “Ah…What would I do without you?” His mouth opened in a searing kiss on the underside of your jaw. “Don’t leave me again. Don’t leave…”
