Work Text:

It's not likely of Shinji and Kaworu to go on date nights but the days they do go out, Kaworu would always get the chance to pick the place. He had the best views for a date, most of which, being a great success. (They don't talk about that one time they spent a month's salary on gacha machines and claw machines during a date to an arcade)

This time, however, Shinji decided that they'd have things his way. Kaworu was excited by this idea and it only grew when Shinji told it was going to be a surprise.

Though Kaworu was take aback when Shinji said they had to dress formally for the date, he didn't say anything. He very much loves seeing his husband in a suit. Especially the maroon suit with the black dress shirt he had picked out for him when they went shopping a few months ago.

Kaworu caught Shinji staring at him as he stripped off his shirt to wear his white dress shirt. He let out a quiet chuckle when Shinji quickly turned his gaze away when their eyes met as he stared. Shinji, now with his back facing Kaworu, fumbled on his gray tie with an embarrassed blush as Kaworu walked over and planted a kiss on the back of his neck.

Shinji flinched at the sudden touch and turned to give Kaworu an affectionately angered look to which Kaworu kissed Shinji on the forehead.

"Let me help you with that," Kaworu said, replacing Shinji's hands on his tie with his.

Shinji buttoned up the shirt Kaworu was wearing as Kaworu tied his tie around his collar. His excitement for his lover to see what he had planned for the two of them grew more and more as he thought of the plans he had awaiting the two of them.

"You look stunning," Kaworu complimented, fixing the position of Shinji's tie.

"Not as stunning as you," Shinji said in a voice almost as low as a whisper.

Kaworu chuckled softly. "But I'm not even dressed yet."

"I know."

Taking Shinji's hand to his, his gaze on the blue sapphire in the middle of the silver ring on his finger before placing a soft kiss over it and looking into similar blue eyes. "I have a small request."

"The usual request I assume?" Shinji grinned.

"How did you know?"

"I saw all the new makeup brushes you bought a few weeks ago that you haven't used yet. It's only obvious."

Kaworu placed another kiss on the back of his hand. "I even bought a new lip gloss. Makinami-san said it was good for making you stand out."

"Really now?" Not really like her to talk about makeup but—

"So, is that a yes?"

"Only if you remove it for me after."

"Sure."

Kaworu gave Shinji a peck on the cheek before gently pulling on his hand to sit on the bed, which Shinji obliged in doing so. Shinji played with his tie as Kaworu went to get his things. Shinji wasn't really a fan of make up, not like Kaworu, who was very quite fond of the art of it, the "to bring more emphasis to the features of a beautiful face" as he phrases it.

As cheesy as that may sound, he didn't feel as thought he was "beautiful". Afterall, he was just an average looking man you will see passing by blending with the crowd, but with the way Kaworu's eyes gazed into his, it felt as if he was the most precious thing in the world for him, seeing him the same way he sees Kaworu.

Shinji felt younger with Kaworu but not like they were still the same teenagers who took comfort in the other through the tough times, some healthily and some in unhealthy ways. Those days may be long gone but their love for one another was still so strong as it was then, if not more even. They never did miss it, those times, not when the lives are so much more happier as it was now.

How far they've both come... even Shinji himself couldn't believe sometimes.

"Hm, what is in your mind?" Kaworu's voice made Shinji's gaze meet his with confusion which Kaworu returned with a smile. "You're smiling."

Shinji's smile only grew wider. "I was just thinking about us. And it just made me happy."

Kaworu chuckled with a faint blush, a sight Shinji never saw from the angel in all the other lifetimes they've had together. "You're really excited for this date, aren't you?"

"Very," Shinji laughed.

Kaworu put a towel over Shinji's shoulders and tucked its edges into his collar. "Then let's get this done quickly, shall we?"

"Alright."

Kaworu turned to the side table to pick up his phone from the table. "Your playlist this time?"

"Just put yours in shuffle. I don't mind."

Kaworu gave him a nod in response and did just as so before placing the phone back on the table.

The room was filled with beautiful melodies of an orchestra when Kaworu pressed a reasonable amount of content from a tube to the back of his hand, dabbing a makeup sponge over it before applying it to Shinji's cheeks.

Shinji would never get used the odd texture make up gives off on its application but Kaworu leaning in closer with well focused crimson eyes watching him closely made his heart melt a little. He watched Kaworu take a red glue stick shaped... thing, whatever it was called, and pressed short gentle spots of it all over his face.

He didn't know what it did or what it was but Kaworu's hot breathe over his face as he applied it on him made him blush furiously.

'Save it for after the date. Save it for after the date,' Shinji's mind chanted as he looked away from Kaworu, who only gave him a peck on the lips

"Sorry, I couldn't help it," Kaworu beamed with his usual eye closed smile. Shinji's heart clenched in his chest at this as he fought the urge to cover his face and ruin the makeup.

"O-Okay," Shinji mumbled, shyly.

Why is Shinji like this? He's been married to him for nearly two years!

Shinji mentally facepalmed at himself when Kaworu continued to use the makeup sponge over his face and neck. The makeup wasn't heavy, considerate of Kaworu who knows Shinji dislikes it heavy when going out, though he likes to go all out with his art.

Kaworu stifled a hearty laugh as Shinji attentively closed his eyes when he saw him pick up the eyeshadow after wiping the foundation from his hands. His smile remained as he dabbed sienna powder from the palate to the new eyeshadow brush to gently over his lids. He blended a burnt sienna colour to the outer side of the eyelids and then a golden glitter over the inner eyelids, giving it a faded look, which would match Shinji's outfit and also bring out his eyes.

Kaworu held his breathe as he carefully drew a dark brown line over the edge of his eye lids, eyelashes picking up a bit of the liquid, which he will fix in a bit.

The music that played came to an end and with the next piece playing when Kaworu searched for a mascara in his crowded makeup pouch. Kaworu stopped as the melody of Tchaikovsky's piano solo of 'Once Upon a Dream' filled the room. He smiled to himself as he recalled the last time he heard this piece. His hand laced into Shinji's, bodies moving together for their first dance as husbands.

Shinji let out a soft sigh like chuckle as a wide smile graced his lips, eyes still lidded because of the wet eyeliner on his eyelids. Oh, how he loved Kaworu so. "I love this piece..."

"Me too..." Kaworu turned to meet Shinji's eyes and was blown away by his blue eyes smiling and shone with so much joy and love. Kaworu felt like he was tearing up. How much he had always longed to see him to smile so freely and so happily. He wished to freeze time right at this moment, just the two of them, hearts filled with so much love and joy. "Almost done." He slurred with a bright heartfelt grin.

Kaworu couldn't help but gaze back at Shinji while he applied mascara over his eyelashes, curling beautifully back on his shaded eyelids.

Shinji's head swayed slowly with the music when Kaworu was done and Kaworu smiled to himself at the sight of it as he opened up the new lip gloss he bought.

"That's a really nice shade of pink," Shinji commented upon seeing the gloss.

"Bet it would look better when you wear it," Kaworu teased.

Shinji laughed. "I think I'll be the judge of that."

Kaworu chuckled at this and turned the lipgloss open. Shinji parted his lips when he brought the gloss pad to his lower lip. Kaworu blushed slightly as fought the urge to kiss his husband as he spread the liquid over his upper lip too. Shinji, staring back with a slight smile, noticed Kaworu peer at his lips so intentively and pursed his lips together when he kept the gloss back into its tube.

Kaworu's eyes met Shinji's and he gave him a small pout which Shinji laughed off. "What?"

He shook his head and pressed their foreheads together with a smile. Shinji hummed and nuzzled Kaworu's nose slowly, eyes closed as he listened to the music playing around them.

Shinji gently pressed his lips against Kaworu's, a soft gesture to show his love. Kaworu met his lips again halfway when he pulled away, and Shinji gently cupped his face as their smiling lips moved against other's. One of Kaworu's hands was on Shinji's thigh and the other one the bed, not wanting to ruin his outfit while he chuckled breathily when his tongue met Shinji's into an even deeper kiss.

Shinji's hands moved to caress his jaw to the back of his head, fingers toying with the angel's ash hair as he pulled the older man in closer to him. Kaworu's hand moved from Shinji's thigh to his waist, almost climbing on top of Shinji to kiss him further, but Shinji broke the kiss, he was sudden and wide-eyed.

"Kaworu, the lipgloss—" He looked puzzled as he saw Kaworu's lips not smudged in the same shade as his own. "Wait, how—?"

"It's smudge proof, dear," Kaworu whispered, pepper kisses just above his collar on his neck.

Shinji hummed dreamily as he let Kaworu continue his thing but a thought seemed to have interrupted his senses. "Ohh... so that's explains why Mari recommended it then," Shinji said in the sMe realization one has when they find out how the sausage was made.

Kaworu pulled away to take a moment and blinked at Shinji. "Now that you put it like that... you do have a point there."

"Right? She doesn't seem even to be too keen about makeup at all."

"Indeed. Strange, she was also the one got Rei the modeling role for the lipstick commercial."

"Truly a mystery."

The men went silent for a seconds before bursting into a hearty laughter. Shinji somehow caught his breath and wiped away the foundation off of Kaworu's nose with his thumb, with a fond smile.

"Oh, I nearly forgot." Kaworu moved and took out a spray from him a plastic bag. Shinji shut his eyes and flinched with a scrunch of his nose as Kaworu sprayed a few pumps of setting spray over his face. "There, all done!"

"Let me see." Shinji takes the hand mirror Kaworu gave him and was amazed with the result. "Wow! I love it," Shinji beamed happily as he checked himself in the mirror. "The blending of the eye shadow is so on point, it's amazing."

"Oh, thank you," Kaworu grinned basking in his husband's compliment.

"Seriously Kaworu, you should do this professionally or something. You're really good at this," Shinji commented as he places the mirror back on the bed.

"I've been thinking about it..."

Shinji looked at Kaworu in surprise. Kaworu just smile at his reaction reach out to hold his hand between his own.

"I don't think an office job is good for me. Especially when our timings clashing sometimes and... I don't know, I don't really enjoy doing it very much."

Shinji smiled at him and gave Kaworu's hand a light squeeze. "Whatever you choice may be, I'll support you."

Kaworu planted a kiss on Shinji's hands "Thank you."

"What are you thanking me for? You're the one I should be thanking for giving me a new look."

"You're too modest." Shinji watched as Kaworu slowly held his wrists in his hands and made his hands pat Kaworu's face gently. "When do we have to get there?"

"In..." Shinji tilted his head to look at his watch, "half hour?" Shinji's hands pulled on Kaworu's cheeks before cupping it over them again. "We just need to get there before an hour later, I just thought we'd go there early."

Kaworu smiled at him foldly. "You never change. Always so punctual."

"I'm the one who booked the place and being late would only cost us more," Shinji huffed.

Kaworu laughed to himself internally. Shinji isn't too subtle on keeping this a surprise but yes, nothing like a fine dining date with the love of your life. He couldn't wait. Just like how he couldn't wait to spend the rest of his life with him.

With an excited grin Kaworu gave Shinji's hands a squeeze. "Let's get going then."
