Summary
"If Diarmuid was being honest with himself, he knew why his mark brought him so much misery. He knew what love was to him. To others...it looked different. Darker. Possessive. It was still cruel, but he could see the logic in it. That was his solace in this unreality, this afterlife; clarity, and the ability to reflect on his mistakes and see things clearly. Love wasn't what he'd imagined as a boy. He'd imagined getting married and having children, waking up refreshed and falling asleep contented, looking at the face of his beloved. It was cruel, that he should be denied it. It was cruel that in falling for him, many others would be denied it too."
Diarmuid has only experienced love as a form of cruelty, both in the past and the present.
