Work Text:
Chris had thousands of thoughts in his head while he was standing in the edge of the sidewalk, right next to his motorcycle, crossed arms inside long black sleeves. Open eyes but seeing nothing. It’s a special date and he was too anxious to remind the schedule for the day. They meant to meet in the café, then what next? Maybe hanging out at the park — but which park and where was it? He didn’t remember at all. Chris was only thinking in Piers. And one more thing.
Speaking of him, their gaze just met right after Piers got out from the bus in the other side of the street. It was too hot for him wear his usual scarf, but he was looking good in that green B.S.A.A. open jacket, inside of which there was a black shirt of an alternative music group which Chris never heard about. Piers smiled, but it took a while for Chris to reply with a smile too, because he was stunned. For one second or five. Or sixty. Should he ask now, or should he leave it for later, or even leave it for another day? Chris didn’t even realize Piers was in front of him until he heard his voice, as soft as wine.
“I cannot believe you forced me to take this day off!”
Chris’s eyebrows jumped in surprise. He replied instantly: “I just wanted to hang out. I mean, peacefully. Our days off never matches anyway.” Chris cleaned his throat. “Also, no one is trying to blow a city up. For now.”
Piers giggled with his partner joke.
“I still could have given you a bike ride to here.” Chris added. “What’s the point, though? We live in the same building because of work.” Chris inquired confusedly.
Piers looked away, kicking the air. “Well. Because then it wouldn’t be a first date and I’m totally a guy of traditions.”
“Indeed.”
“But you can feel free to give me a ride back to the dormitories. That bus traveled around the whole city before I could finally arrive here.” Chris got happy with the proposal of Piers, but tried quite hard to don’t show he was.
“Sounds good. You’re lucky that I brought an extra helmet with me.”
Piers looked to Chris’s motorcycle and spotted two helmets strapped down by elastic webs — one in the front, the latter in the back. He shook his head in approve. “Yeah, sounds good!”
Chris pointed with his head at the café right behind him. Together, they walked in, really close to each other. The door jiggled a cuddly tiny bell just above it, making it sound a low ringing. The café was almost empty. Who doesn’t have coffee in the mornings? Chris thought, but didn’t speak.
“You go save our seats and I’ll bring you the coffee.” Chris said.
Piers’ face wrinkled. “I don’t like coffee.” He instantly regretted after seeing the smile flying away from Chris’s face, so added: “At all. Get me a hot chocolate, please.” He smiled, making Chris to smile again.
Chris waited impatiently the orders in the counter, once or twice looking behind towards Piers, who was playing with the toothpicks — he chose the further booth. When their gaze met, they smiled at the same time. But Chris smiled first this time.
Chris arrived with their drinks and two warm muffins.
Piers melted. “Oh, thank you so much! I didn’t have breakfast — I’m starving.”
Chris sat besides Piers and gave him an unhappy look. “Have mine. You should know breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Chris pushed his tiny cake towards Piers.
“Yeah, but I woke up quite late and I had to get ready to meet with you. Besides, I’m not gonna get the second muffin. It’s yours.” Piers pushed it back to the original owner.
“Nope. It’s yours. I’m really not hungry, I had a disgusting fruit salad from the building canteen right before leaving.” He pushed the muffin again, but this time Piers didn’t make any defensive move.
“Thanks.” Piers said before biting one of the cakes. He really was starving.
“You’re welcome.”
Chris took tiny sips of his hot coffee, burning as much as his heart, while watched Piers chewing. He was thinking louder than he wanted to. He can’t keep delaying this thing the whole day, even though they just met. Should he ask now, should he ask later, should he not ask today? Should he run away like a coward?
Chris cleaned his throat. “Um, Piers?” He finally said, instantly regretting. Come on, I can’t go back now. “We’ve been, like, dating for a month. It makes a month today.”
“And we kissed thousand times in the meantime too.” Piers added, making Chris blush and drink another sip of his coffee. “Were you counting the days, though? This is kinda, don’t know…”
“…weird?” Chris completed, feeling awful.
“No!” Piers instantly replied. “It’s cute. You’re cute.” He smiled, holding Chris’s face by his stubble beard. Chris blushed with the affect and leaned down his face towards Piers’ hand, appreciating his touch.
“I. Um. I wanted to know. This is awkward. Do you want to. I mean…”
Piers swallowed another bite of the muffin, listening carefully, his gaze frozen on Chris’s, which was looking away restlessly. Chris was starting to sweat. Cold sweat. Piers didn’t want to stop his partner. Chris cleaned his throat once again before saying:
“Will you be my boyfriend?” Chris let it out, closing his eyes and pressing his lips. He was blushed. He was embarrassed. He was anxious.
Piers was surprised. He thought they already were boyfriends, despite the fact that he’s a guy of traditions. Yeah, he would like to be formally asked to be someone’s boyfriend. But why was Chris so nervous?
He swallowed one small sip of his hot chocolate before touching Chris’ hand, which was resting on the table, totally squeezed in a sweaty grasp. Chris opened his eyes and suddenly got enchanted by Piers staring at him. Piers wasn’t smiling neither laughing — he was only being him. The man who Chris fell in love with.
“You’re so adorable and that’s why I like you”, Piers replied with a smile. Chris loosened his grip to let Piers hold his hand properly. “Yes, I obviously will!”
Chris’ lips stretched into a smile, a big one. “I totally want to kiss you now.”
Piers acted faster and held on Chris’ beard, pulling him close and kissing him in the lips. Chris panicked at first, but he let the kiss flow magically and passionately, holding with his free hand Piers’ soft cheek.
They stopped for a moment and Chris took a good look at Piers’ face: his eyes were closed, but he was smiling. His sweet, kind smile.
“You make my heart burn stars, boy.”
Chris held Piers’ face with both of his hands and pulled him for another kiss. Chris’ heart was beating harder within the last seconds because he knew they were now boyfriends and it was their first kiss as boyfriends. Two lovely boyfriends.
