Kim never expected to fall in love. She never thought it was written in the stars for her. She never thought it was her destiny. Because when all of the people around her started to find intricate, beautiful designs on their bodies thus dooming them to be connected to one person forever, her skin remains unmarred. She’s okay with that, more okay with it than she probably should’ve been, but she found the lack of a soulmate mark to be freeing. Kim ignores the people who whisper that the universe forgot about her.
She got to live her life however she wanted, without the constant question of “where?” lingering in the back of her mind. Kim lived every day for herself, every moment was dedicated to her art, which she grew to consider her real true love over time. Art was the only way she was ever able to express her true feelings about her lack of a soulmate mark without fearing judgment.
Her life was perfect until she met Naomi, and everything she ever thought she knew came crashing down around her. It started with friendship, as all her relationships do, but then she started waking up every single fucking day with only Naomi on her mind. It became embarrassing how much time she spent on the phone with her, texting and calling each other for hours on end each day.
Naomi quickly became her best friend, and Kim was shocked by it. She didn’t realize she could feel as deeply for someone as she does for Naomi. They bond over their art, their shared sense of humor, and their lack of soulmate marks. Naomi understands how freeing it felt to not be burdened by those marks, yet how alienating it was at the same time. Naomi knows what the rude comments from other people feel like, she also knows the desperate want for love that means something
Now? Kim doesn’t know if she can exist without Naomi Smalls in her life. Naomi is everything to her, she’s life and light and a hopeful future all wrapped up in one perfect, beautiful human being. They do everything together, and their friends start joking that one would implode without the other. Kim can’t help but feel they’re right.
When Naomi moves in with her, everything falls into place. Kim doesn’t know if this means they’re officially dating now, but she doesn’t care. Neither care to label what it is they have, not when they’re so lucky to have it in the first place. Kim always thought being born without a soulmate mark meant she was born to be alone in this vast, empty universe surrounded by people who were born with their forever written in their skin.
Kim, on the other hand, found her forever. Naomi is her forever. Forever is being curled up right next to each other in bed, with Naomi’s arms wrapped tightly around her, and Kim pressing soft kisses into her warm skin.
“I love you,” Kim whispers against Naomi’s neck, shrouded in the darkness of their bedroom with only the streetlights streaming in through the window.
“Love you, too,” Naomi murmurs in response, hugging Kim closer.
In that moment, Kim is certain that no one the universe picked for her would’ve been half as good as what she made for herself, what they made together. If they wake up the next morning with tiny, matching hearts on their collarbones, neither says anything about it. In the end, it isn’t going to matter and both women know that. All that will matter is the life they create together.
The universe says this wasn’t supposed to happen and the stars are certain their love wasn’t written in them and the future never foresaw their meeting. Kim doesn’t care, all she cares about is getting to spend the rest of
her
forever with Naomi. As long as every morning she gets to see Naomi’s beautiful smile and every night she can remind Naomi how much she loves her, they’ll be okay. Fuck the universe and the stars and the future. No one gets to write her story but her, and Kim’s story will
always
have Naomi in it. They will always choose each other.
