Work Text:

They’re both drunk. Not only has it been a long night, but it was inevitable from the time they agreed to show up. Bob is at the bar, sipping something strong, and for whatever reason, she can’t take her eyes off of Kim, who is on the stage lip-synching a song Bob doesn’t quite recognize. It doesn’t matter though, because as usual, Kim is giving an incredible performance.

When they first met more than a year ago now, Bob never would have guessed her lip-syncs are as good as they are. Kim is mesmerizing, she commands the attention of the room and is very precise in every move she makes, even drunk like Bob knows she is. Time seems to slow down watching her, that or the alcohol is hitting a little too hard.

Kim finishes her performance by striking a stunning pose, then stumbles off the stage as gracefully as a baby elephant while the crowd cheers. She’s grinning widely as she walks up to Bob, and Bob is once again reminded that she has a really fucking pretty smile. Just looking at Kim makes her feel warm and fuzzy in a way that doesn’t really make sense, since they’re only friends after all. Well, only isn’t completely correct. Bob considers Kim to be a good friend, a best friend even, and her heart has never before beat this wildly simply from being next to a friend.

“Gonna get more wine?” Bob asks Kim over the pounding music and party lights.

Kim is peering around the counters, obviously looking for a bartender, and she rolls her eyes at Bob’s question, “No, I’m going to order a Shirley Temple.”

Bob laughs, throwing her head back as she does, and takes another sip of her drink, “You should try something new sometime.”

“I know what I like,” Kim shrugs, leaning over the counter to finally ask a bartender for what she wants.

“Red, dry, and half full?”

“Sounds like a party if I’ve ever heard of one,” Kim chuckles, taking her drink from the bartender with a ‘thank you.’

“I can think of a million things that are a million times better than that,” Bob insists, unable to understand how Kim can stand the stuff, “How many of those have you had already?”

Kim pauses to take a long sip of her wine, then crosses one arm over her chest and leans back against the counter, “A few.”

“A few like ‘3 or 4’ or a few like, too many?”

Kim glances Bob up and down, “You’re one to talk.”

“Jealous?” Bob asks teasingly.

“Of you ?” Kim retorts.

“Why not? I am beautiful, I am hilarious, and I always turn the party.”

“Two out of three isn’t bad,” Kim says, taking another sip of her red wine.

Bob grins, “You are so fucking mean to me.”

“I am mean to everyone, ” Kim corrects her.

Even a little too drunk to fully understand everything her friend is saying, she knows that Kim is right. Something about Kim being an ‘equal opportunist’ asshole comes to mind, and Bob can’t help her laughter at Kim’s bold statement. Maybe that’s what drew her to Kim in the first place, her boldness in spite of being soft-spoken.

“And yet you’re still one of the most lovable people I’ve ever met.”

Kim frowns but says nothing. Bob is still staring at her friend though, waiting for one of her witty comebacks that she seemingly never runs out of, but it never comes. Instead, Kim sets her drink down on the counter and practically runs through the crowds of people and out of the building. Bob follows her as soon as she processes what just happened, barely remembering to leave her glass on the counter before running after her friend.

Bob finds her run-away drag queen in the alleyway that’s just next door. Kim is leaning against the brick of the building, her arms crossed over her chest and chin pointed towards the night sky. So, doing what any friend would, Bob quietly joins her. Their shoulders are touching and Bob is surprised Kim doesn’t immediately move away since she’s not the touchy-feely type, but she stays still anyways.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” Bob asks after a few minutes of silence.

“I think I’m just confused.”

“Confused?”

“I don’t know if you would understand,” Kim admits quietly.

Bob looks at Kim skeptically, “Try me.”

Kim sighs and rests her head back against the rough brick, “Bob, I- I really like you. I like you a lot. And not just in a friend way. You’re kind, funny, honest… and all of that is really attractive. You’re magnetic, sometimes it makes me wish we were more than what we are.”

“Kim…”

Bob can’t look away from her, there are tears shining in her distant gaze and her lips are pressed together tightly. It’s obvious to her that Kim isn’t all there, but Kim keeps going like she doesn’t know how to stop herself.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I can’t stop thinking about you or wanting to be near you. You make me feel…”

“...Feel?” Bob prompts her.

“Safe. I don’t- It’s stupid. I don’t know.”

Bob doesn’t know what to say, so she takes Kim’s hand. The two are quiet, relishing in each other’s company while the moment lasts.

“Yeah, me too,” Bob whispers.

“...Yeah?”

“You know, I wasn’t kidding when I said you were attractive, back when we were filming.”

Kim quickly turns her head to look at Bob, a look of sheer disbelief on her face, “What?”

“God, you are dense sometimes,” Bob chuckles, “I’m serious, Sang. You’re attractive, I’m attractive, and we have fantastic chemistry together.”

“I don’t think either of us are thinking clearly right now,” Kim says, almost fearfully.

“Does it matter?”

“Not right now,” Kim relents.

“Exactly,” Bob says, interlocking their fingers together, “Wanna get out of here and do things attractive people do together?”

“Okay,” Kim agrees with a smile that Bob wishes would never leave her face.

They’re both drunk, but for once that’s not a bad thing. Because now they both know that their relationship is stronger than any of their fears.
