Chapter 1: snow day

Chapter Text

The closet was the first place she checked, pushing aside short sleeves, coats, cardigans. The cold was already seeping through the walls, flurries of white visible through the windows. Enna slammed the door shut with a growl, stomping over to the drawer to rummage through it as well. Nothing seemed warm enough, though she did find a nice pair of gloves.

She groaned, collapsed on her sad little bed and stared at the ceiling, having half a mind to shrug her coat off and just lie there for the rest of the day. Her body ached from yesterday, having gone out with friends for hours, coming back home when the sun was only a few hours away from rising.

Enna rubbed her eyes, one arm already out of her coat when she felt vibrations through the fabric. She was confused for a second before she realized and went fumbling for the pockets. Enna fished her phone out, clicking it open to the lock screen image of her and Millie. It was a frame perfect image caught by Nina last summer; Millie caught in the act of pushing Enna of the pier of a lake. She smiled at it, traced Millie’s smiling face and her own panicked one.

Enna told the others that she kept it out of spite, fuel for revenge. Enna kept it because she liked seeing Millie smile.

The message she had gotten was from Millie, asking her if she wanted to meet at the park in a few minutes.

‘Grab some coffee?‘ She had asked.

Enna paused, thumbs halfway through typing out an apology, she couldn’t make it, she had important things to do.

‘Important my ass’, Millie would begin, and Enna would interrupt with some terrible joke that would derail them for a few minutes. ‘I bet you’re just too lazy to get out of bed.’

Then Enna would have to explain, ‘no, of course not, I am doing very important adult things.’

Millie would say, ‘and I’m doing your mom. Get over here.’

And that would be that.

‘Okay‘, Enna sent over. ‘B there in 5.’

Her arm was still struggling to get through her sleeve by the time she was out the door.

Enna walked through the cold streets, trying her best not to slip on the slick sidewalk. It had rained last night, and the temperature drop combined with the now light drizzle led to iced over streets and snow piling up in corners. It would be perfect, if it weren’t for the fact that Enna’s teeth were chattering and that she had forgotten her nice gloves.

The coffeeshop came into view, Millie standing outside rubbing her hands together to warm them up. She lit up when she saw Enna, the songbird swore the temperature rose multiple degrees right then.

Enna flicked her wings to get all the rain off, greeted Millie with a wave.

“Dude, you look like you’re freezing,” Millie frowned, pressing the back of her hand to Enna’s red cheek.

Enna tried to breathe normally, even when something melted in her chest.

“For fucks sake,” Millie undid her scarf, looped it over Enna’s head and wrapped it around her neck. She patted it when she was done, frown melting away, bright smile back in place. “There we go, better?”

Enna ducked her chin a bit, could smell Millie’s scent of spices and sun clinging to the scarf. She felt warm from the top of her head to the tips of her wings. Snow fell down around them, increasing steadily. The interior of the coffeeshop looked even more appealing now.

“Yeah,” Enna grinned, looping her arm through Millie’s and tugging her inside. “Much better.”
