Chapter 1: the bed has space for three

Chapter Text

The date had gone nicely, Elira having won the argument to pay for the meal. She knew it wasn’t really a fight, Millie had paid for the movie tickets beforehand so it was all even. Millie just wanted an excuse to kiss her silly in an alleyway behind the restaurant. Elira wasn’t complaining at all.

Her feet ached a little from all the walking they had done, Millie wanting to show Elira the new art installation by their coffee place had them going on a twenty minute detour. Enna had been texting Elira a bit frantically at that point, asking why she wasn’t home yet and if Millie was actually a serial killer with Elira as her latest victim. Elira texted her that she was fine. Enna tried to play it off, but Elira sent her a heart and a promise to bring her the leftovers. It was a nice place, she knew Enna would appreciate it.

“Thanks for walking me home,” Millie said when they had reached her door. Elira wished that they lived at the same apartment every day, but their place just wasn’t big enough for three people when it was already barely able to handle two.

“Of course,” Elira smiled at her, pecking her cheek. Millie blushed, opening the door quickly and stepping behind it, speaking through the crack.

“Have a good night,” She said, fingers tapping nervously on the worn paint.

“You too, baby,” Elira’s eyes crinkled at the corners, love in the curl of her lips. Millie closed the door. Elira walked home alone.

It was reaching one A.M. by the time Elira was standing in front of her own door; dark blue, worn and cracked, a dent forced outwards from the time Elira pinned Enna into it a bit too harshly. She smiled as she fumbled with her keys.

“So you’re finally back,” Enna said in liu of a greeting. She sat at the dining table, waiting, in her pajamas with her phone still in her hand. She looked like she had been there for a while.

Elira lifted the box she was carrying with a weak smile. “I brought you cake?”

Enna watched her place the container down, opening it like it was a priceless gift. She inspected the strawberry and cream cake.

“Acceptable,” Enna nodded. “You are forgiven.”

“Shut up,” Elira laughed, poking Enna’s forehead and earning herself an indignant squawk.

“Is that your jacket?” Enna asked, grabbing a fork and already digging into the cake piece.

“Oh shit,” Elira struggled to take it off, the material way too tight around her shoulders and biceps, sticking to her built frame like glue. “It’s Millie’s.”

“Was Millie’s,” Enna corrected, smiling as she finished off the cake in record time. “I don’t think it would fit her anymore.”

Elira cursed, holding out the jacket in front of her and groaning as she realized how much it had stretched.

“What do I do?” She whined, following Enna as she threw away the box and dumped the fork in the sink, then headed to their bedroom.

“Buy her a new one, I guess.” Enna picked a shirt off the floor and sniffed it, deemed it clean enough and tossed it to Elira, who just pulled it on. “Or just give it back, maybe she’ll like it even more now that you wore it.”

“That would be a Millie thing to do,” Elira said, sliding into bed and staring at the ceiling. She was still holding the jacket. It smelled like Millie; spicy and bitter, the herbs she used and the sweet perfume Enna gave her to balance it out.

“I’ll give it to her tomorrow,” Enna yawned, flopping down on top of Elira with a thump. She cuddled into her side, oblivious to the dragon’s shuddering breaths. “I’m meeting up with her anyways.”

“That’s nice,” Elira wheezed. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Enna grinned. The jacket was sandwiched between them, and for a moment when the two of them closed their eyes they could imagine Millie lying in bed next to them. “Now go the fuck to sleep, you kept me awake for hours.”

“You could have just gone to sleep, you know.”

“But I didn’t,” Enna glared at Elira pointedly, even as she nuzzled into her neck. Elira was just smiling. She fell asleep with a comfortable ache in her cheeks.
