Chapter Text

When I was younger, I never imagined I’d be stuck like this. It was a fear, getting stuck in an elevator, sure. But getting stuck with a person I despise this much? Fuck that. Well, no, hold on. It’s not that I despise Adora, I just—God, I wish she would tell me before she makes such stupid decisions.

“You know you don’t have to stay dead silent the whole time, right? We can hold a conversation.”

I scoffed, “I have nothing to say to you that I haven’t said already.”

“Catra, don’t start this up again.” She groaned, sinking against the elevator wall as she sat on the floor. What was I doing wrong? I was totally justified in feeling the way I felt.

“I’m not starting anything up, Adora. You started this up when you decided you were quitting the job.” She handed in her two-week notice today, in fact. I still can’t understand why. Yeah, it was a shitty desk job, but at least we were in it together.

“Only because the company is a nightmare. Seriously, do you think I wanted to leave? I’ll have to leave you, too. Obviously, I hate that, but I can’t stay here and work for these assholes anymore. What we’re doing isn’t helping people, Catra, we’re making lives worse.” She had a point, but I wasn’t about to admit it.

“So what, I’m just supposed to stick around while you prance off and find another secretary to romance?”

“Romance?” I saw her face shift from annoyance to interest—hell, a tease, almost.

“You know what I mean! What am I supposed to do if you’re not around for me to annoy?”

“You still have my phone number, right? You can bug me to your heart’s content.” She smiled up at me, still sitting on the floor of the elevator. I was leaning back against the wall, scratching at the neck from her offer. Then came another minute of silence. I looked around the broken elevator that we had been residing in for so long. This wasn’t news to anyone though, it was almost always broken. Adora just needed a quick exit after handing in her notice. And me, being the fool I am, followed her right in here. She’s lucky I was here, though, otherwise she’d be stuck all alone. Now at least we’re alone together.

Alone. Together. Ah, fuck.

I looked down at Adora as she pulled out her phone, looking for something new to take her attention. Makes sense, I suppose. I wasn’t much for conversation at the moment unless it involved me scolding her for leaving me behind at this boring-ass office job.

“So,” I started with a mutter, trying to break the silence, “What will you do next?”

“Hm?” She glanced up from her phone. “Oh, Glimmer’s helping me find a new job.” Ugh, the roommate. I couldn’t stand that peppy brat most of the time. Maybe it was her uptightness, maybe it was the fact that Adora spent more time with her than me most days. Whatever, she was still a thorn in my side.

“You could always come over, y’know.” My eyebrows shot up, and I had to compose myself back to a calm, collected look before her eyes slowly glanced up at me. “It’s not like we’re not friends. What are you doing tonight?”

“Tonight?” I kept my cool on the surface level as my brain started to fluster. Tonight? What was tonight? Was I going to do anything when I got home? Did I have plans? Netflix? A hobby maybe? I couldn’t remember if I even had dinner thawing out at home, my thoughts were all consumed at that moment by her simple question.

“Yeah, it’s movie night, so Glimmer and I were gonna order pizza. You’re welcome to come if you want.” There it is, the roommate again. Although, it was an invitation nonetheless. Maybe it was worth dealing with Sparkles for a while if I got to spend time with Adora. My thoughts continued to race as the image of that movie night came into view.

“Well, it’s not a terrible idea.” I tried to sound indifferent about it.

“Don’t get too excited.” She smirked with a tease, God I hated that tease. She was an asshole, a jerk, I didn’t need to spend time with her. What was I thinking? But, then again...

“Alright, I’ll be there. Just one small problem.”

“What’s that?”

“We’re still stuck in an elevator, Adora.”
