Work Text:
It was an ordinary day in good old New York city, and in a suburban area, just outside of Manhattan, the Freelance Police were getting ready for a very special case.
"Alright Amber, you've been pretty good all week, and the jar is completely filled up!" Sam said. Max held up a jar filled with delicious jelly beans.
"Yeah, I'm surprised you didn't take any of the jelly beans out to eat." Max said.
"Well, considering last time, I found you in the middle of the night possessed by the spirit of a fat kid that died in a chocolate factory munching on them all!" Sam said.
"Ah, it's fine Sam! Besides, we exorcised that ghost out of me the next day." Max said.
"Anyways, it's time for your reward!" Sam said to his and Max's adoptive daughter, Amber, a poodle with a homemade cape tied to her neck, and some band-aids covering various bumps and scratches.
"Does that mean I finally get to go on a case with you guys?!" Amber said.
"Yep!" Sam said as Amber tackle hugged him.
"Oh, thank you Daddy, you're the best!" Amber said.
"Amber, sweetie, I can't breathe!" Sam said as Amber let go.
"Oh, sorry..." Amber said.
"Ah, don't worry, it's fine! I do that to him every day, and he never complains about it!" Max said.
"Yeah, sure you do." Sam said, mockingly agreeing with what Max was saying.
"Anyways, go get ready! We're heading out in a half hour!" Max said.
"Ok!" Amber said as she ran off to her room. Max turned to Sam.
"So what do we have planned?" Max said.
"We'll just take her to the old abandoned amusement park. The one with the Aquabears." Sam said.
"So we're just going to take her through the same course that Lumpy went through?" Max said.
"Yep!" Sam said.
"Wonder whatever happened to them?" Max said.
"I think they moved to Seattle to become freelance police there!" Sam said.
"Well that's good for them." Max said. Eventually, Amber came out with her baseball bat, which Max had gifted to her for her birthday. The three got in the DeSoto, and headed out for the old abandoned amusement park.
"Hey Sam, your phone is ringing." Max said while the DeSoto was barreling down the highway.
"Aren't you going to try and fight me to answer it?" Sam said.
"If we do that, we might crash and die, so I'd rather not do that." Max said.
"Fair point." Sam said as he picked up the phone.
"Hello? Yeah, uh-huh, sure. Yes, we know, we are blacklisted from attending that event ever again. Alright, we're on the case!" Sam said as he hung up. As soon as he could get off the highway, he did.
"Where are we going Sam? This isn't the way to where the case is." Max said.
"Yeah, I want to go there and fight some bad guys!" Amber said.
"Well, we've got a more important case to attend to, it'll be really quick!" Sam said as he stopped in front of an abandoned warehouse.
"Where is this?" Max said.
"612 Wharf Avenue, the Commissioner wanted us to go here for the sudden case." Sam said as he looked back at Amber.
"Amber, this will only take a bit, we'll be back as soon as possible, and then we'll go back to the case we were originally going to." Sam said.
"Ok Daddy." Amber said.
"Listen to me, stay in the car, and don't follow us. It's dangerous." Sam said as Amber nodded.
"We'll be back, love ya." Max said as he and Sam exited the car, and entered the warehouse. After awhile, Sam and max were still not back.
"I know they told me to stay in the car, but I need to find them..." Amber said as she grabbed her bat, and headed out, sneaking to a staircase on the side of the building. At the top, she came to a locked door. It was a simple lock, and Amber pulled out her lockpicking tools that Sam had given her, as well as lockpicking lessons. After picking the lock, she snuck through the warehouse, eventually coming to a room where her dad were hung up above a tank of hungry piranhas, with a guy with a fishbowl for a head standing right in front of her. Luckily, she was behind him, so he didn't notice her. There was also some controls.
"AND I WILL DESTROY YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID TO ME!" The fish man said as he swum around in his fishbowl with rage.
"We have no idea who you even are." Sam said.
"H-how?! WE'VE FOUGHT MULTIPLE TIMES! YOU TURNED ME INTO THIS MONSTROSITY! I SWEAR BY MY NAME, MACK SALMON, THAT YOU WILL DIE!" Mack Salmon said.
"Oh wait, I think I remember you!" Max said.
"Y-you do?" Mack Salmon said.
"Yeah! You're that fish I flushed down the toilet when I was 10!" Max said. Mack Salmon's eyes looked like they were about to burst in rage.
"THAT'S IT! DIE!!!!" Mack Salmon said as he went to go lower Sam and Max into the tank. Just then, he felt his bowl flying through the air, and into the tank, where he was met by the piranhas.
"Eh, nice fishies?..." Mack Salmon said as they lunged at him with bloodied rage. Mack Salmon swum for his life.
"Captain Amber is here to save the day!" Amber said after swinging her bat to save her dads.
"AMBER!" The two yelled in happiness.
"Daddy, Poppa, are you two ok?" Amber said.
"Of course we are! Can you get us free?" Max said as Amber used the controls to get Sam and Max on to the catwalk she was on, she then got the two free from the chains. The three then hugged.
"Holy wheat farmer buying non-gluten bread at a supermarket! Amber, you saved us!" Sam said as he accidentally hit a button labelled "SELF-DESTRUCT".
"Uuuuh...." Amber said as she saw it.
"We should go." Max said as the three ran out of the warehouse, and got in the DeSoto, before Sam high-tailed it out of there. As this happened, the three looked back to see the warehouse blowing up.
"YEAH!!! BIG EXPLOSION!" Amber said.
"I love it when that happens." Max said as the car went to a more normal speed, driving away from the warehouse.
"So how did you enjoy your first case Amber?" Sam said.
"It was awesome! I had a lot of fun!" Amber said.
"Well I'm glad you enjoyed it. C'mon, we'll take you for some ice cream." Sam said.
"Can I get it chocolate dipped? And with sprinkles and gummies and all the great toppings?" Amber said.
"Of course!" Max said.
"Yay!" Amber said as the DeSoto headed for Amber's favorite ice cream place. This really was the best day ever.
