It took 5 days, 3 whole days for Chan to give up and agree to go to the zoo with the kids and 2 to actually plan their visit there. Of course Chan agreed because it's his father that insisted. The kids begged too but it was easier to agree when said kids had support from their grandparents and especially from their Harabeoji.
They spent at least 3 hours getting everything ready the evening before to get ahead of themselves and be sure not to forget anything.
They'd planned to spend all the day at the zoo. Really, if there wasn't an emergency, they wanted to make the best of it, try explaining things to the kid, take calm times and just enjoy overall.
The day had started pretty early for the family. Harabeoji and Nana made sure the kids were well fed with kimchi fried rice and eggs, first thing in the morning so they wouldn't feel bad under the hot weather. Then they had to get ready, changing clothes - the older ones had no problem with that but Jeongin still quite struggled and let's say Seungmin had his own techniques -, brushing teeth and combing hair.
Once they were done, Nana and Changbin took care of lathering the kids with sunscreen, each taking care of 3 of them even if Minho claimed he could do it on his own before melting under his grandmother's hands as she massaged the sunscreen onto his face. Nana almost made the mistake of using sticky sunscreen on Hyunjin but the kid complained even before she could put anything on his skin. Thankfully Changbin had a different non-sticky cream for Hyunjin and Seungmin.
On his side Chan was checking the bags they'd take along. Their usual principle was 1 kid 1 bag but it wasn't possible for them to do that today, there was no way they'd manage to have the kids actually carry their bags the whole day so they tried to pack everything in one big bag. Nana had taken out of a closet the diaper bag Chan and Changbin used to carry around when the twins were babies way before they moved out of the country.
They definitely needed the space. They had this habit to always overpack. It came from the numerous accidents they'd run into those past 12 years of parenting. They brought changes of clothes for each of the kids just in case, they also had to carry around emergency meds for Felix, sound cancelling earmuffs for Hyunjin, extra batteries for Seungmin's hearing aids, … that made quite a lot.
Before going they made sure they had the kids wearing shorts to avoid them gettingtoo warm, they had to insist a few long minutes for Minho to go put on a pair after he showed up wearing jeans. Along with that they were all wearing the same exact green t-shirt including both the fathers and the grandparents, color coding everyone so they could easily be brought together if one of them got lost. And they each had a cap or a hat on to avoid heat stroke. Each kid had a safety bracelet placed on their wrist with emergency information such as phone numbers.
Minho was pestering about the need for those things, he considered himself old enough to choose to wear a cap or not and to follow through and not get lost. Changbin hardly disagreed with him, if he made an exception for Minho, he knew the 3 twelve year olds would also start to act up, making it hard for both parents before even being on their way to the cars.
They drove up to the zoo in 2 separate cars. Chan and Changbin arrived first. They were here by 9.10 a bit before the zoo opened.
Chan was glad they could use a parking spot close to the entrance. He immediately went to grab Seungmin's wheelchair from the trunk and put it altogether before helping the boy out of the vehicle. He then brought Jisung his canes as he'd started to use them more often these days (which started to worry the parents but they had agreed that it was a problem for when they'd be back from their holidays as the teen hadn't complained about pain).
They then waited for Chan's parents to arrive with Minho, Hyunjin and Jeongin. Jeongin was already threatening to run away from his grandmother as he tried to get her to stop holding his hand.
"Jeongin-ah, hold Nana's hand!", she started to scold him.
"Eommoni, it's ok I'll take him.", Changbin said, reaching out for the maknae's hand with the look, the one that meant calm down and behave, the kids usually didn't play around too much when Changbin looked at them this way.
They got to the entrance and right before they entered Chan called for everyone's attention.
"Alright, rules of the day.", Chan announced. "We are outside so we expect everyone to stay together. If you want to go on the side for a minute, go to the bathroom or stay to see an animal when we decide to move on, you can ask an adult to come along and one of your brothers has to stay with you as well. This way if anything happens there will be an adult to deal with it and you'll be able to pick their phone to call me or Appa. You all know my number but you also have it on your bracelets, just in case. Did everyone understand? Jeongin?"
"I stay with Appa."
"That's good sweetheart. You're allowed to stay with Nana, Harabeoji and Dad too but not alone.", Changbin insisted.
"No running around, I know it's gonna get really exciting to see animals but we take our time, there's no need to run. There will be slopes and everything, we have to push Seungmin's chair up and Jisung has trouble these days."
"Hey! I don't!", the older twin whined.
"It's alright, Dalamjwi (Squirrel), you don't need to worry about it.", Changbin comforted him, massaging his shoulders softly.
"We have water in the bags if you're thirsty and there are snacks with Nana. Around noon we'll go to the restaurant and then we'll go to the presentations."
"I don't want.", Seungmin signed.
"What don't you want Minnie?"
"Yucky food."
"Nana made rice for you and Hyunjin if you can't eat anything from the restaurant.", the woman said gently. "I even brought carrot and cucumber sticks."
"Ew.", Hyunjin said ppking his tongue out.
"Don't say that about food.", Changbin said, he must admit the face that the kid made was hilarious but he had to hold his laughter and correct the behaviour.
Hyunjin rolled his eyes and this time it's Chan gave him the look.
Minho was obsessed with the koalas, he'd already seen them of course, it wasn't his first time in a zoo but he was obsessed with the little bear like marsupials. All he wanted was to spend some more time watching them but Felix had insisted that they should go see the other Australian animals and the family moved on.
That's how he almost got lost in the 1st hour they spent at the zoo. He kept on running in the front with Hyunjin just to be able to see the koala again, if they were quick enough they would go back, right?
His fathers had expected Jeongin to do that, not their two oldests but going out with the family always brought somewhat unpredictable behaviours from the kids, even from the oldests.
After 30 minutes of calling him out, Chan and Changbin figured out that Minho was doing all of that because of the "I'm the oldest and I'm grown enough" thing he pulled off this morning.
Minho wasn't expecting Chan to actually start to run after him after the 5th time he'd been asked to stay around. If Hyunjin quickly stopped his shenanigans to join the rest of the family … Minho didn't and that's exactly how he almost got lost.
Being 14 didn't make him enough of a grown up to stop acting up like a little kid. He knew he had launched himself head first in a "you're gonna get your phone confiscated" game and that it was too late to stop now.
"Lee Minho!", Chan called. "Minho!"
He vaguely heard someone ask Chan if he was searching for a kid and he knew his father was already done with his bad behavior. He started to make his way back, hoping to join his Appa and the rest of them nearby the wallabies.
He ended up passing by the Koala enclosure again. He would have sworn that he'd only spent a few minutes watching them. It was until his phone rang out loud blasting american rap an that an angry Dad appeared in the corner of his sight that he realised at least 15 minutes had passed.
"Minho! You're in big trouble, boy!", Chan said holding on his shoulder.
"I know Dad."
"We'll talk about it with your Appa but I can already tell you that tonight you'll give me your phone. Now come with me, we need to join the others."
The teen followed by, he knew he was in trouble just by the way his father looked at him.
By 11, they'd seen Kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, Koalas, Camels, Kookaburras, Platypus, Wombats … the kids were overjoyed. It was going well really, everyone was enjoying themselves once Minho stopped acting up. Seungmin had had trouble in the nocturnal zone where the Wombats and Echidnas were because he couldn't sign in there or well he could but it was hard for his fathers and siblings to see him. Also Hyunjin had pierced everyone's ears with the scream he'd let out when he saw the spiders, making Seungmin's hearing aids ring. But overall they were fine, after 1 snack pause and 3 bathroom breaks as per Jeongin requests.
"Harabeoji!", Seungmin tried to call verbally. He was really making an effort for his grandparents, Harabeoji wasn't good at signing but it didn't really matter because Seungmin could read lips and sometimes, whenever it was calm around and that his grandfather was speaking more on the right side of his face he could hear Harabeoji's voice and he liked it, it sounded nice, deeper than Appa and Dad's voices. Nana was great with basic signs but he still tried to speak for her, it made her smile prettily. Both of his parents knew how he wasn't at ease with that but they supported him a lot with it when he heard trouble speaking. "Beoji! Harabeoji!"
"Yes sweetheart? Don't go too fast, ok? Harabeoji is still learning."
Seungmin tried to sign very slowly and Chan wanted to jump in to help Harabeoji decipher but he knew how his father and his 11 years old were just trying to make it work together. He knew that Seungmin's signs aren't always perfect because of his hand paresis that made it harder for the boy to sign two handed words. At home, they just worked with it but for Chan's father though it was harder. The man didn't recognize most of the signs Seungminshowed him.
"Oh do you want to teach me how to say someting, hum? Is that it?"
"Yes.", Seungmin said, nearly jumping on his feet.
"Which word is it that you're gonna teach me?"
The boy pointed at the quokkas in front of them.
"Oh Quokka. Great show me."
It made Seungmin really happy to see his grandfather try and it made him laugh when the man finally made it and made a weird face along with it.
"Is Jisung a Quokka?", the grandfather tried asking.
Seungmin thought for a second before shaking his head, it would probably suit him but no he already had a perfect sign.
"No, he is "number 1 Squirrel" ."
"Hum, Hana, I see. Is there a second Squirrel?"
"Auntie."
"Who?"
"Changbin's sister, Dabin.", Chan answered. "We're not sure why but it's Seungmin that chooses our name signs."
"Ah! I see."
They were watching fennec fox pups playing together in the sand of their enclosure.
Jeongin was in awe in front of them. He really really liked to see baby animals playing together. Hence why he was jumping like a bunny in front of the glass as his grandparents laughed and pointed out his shenanigans.
"Hyung, hyung, hyung, hyung!!"
They didn't know who he was calling and honestly even the little boy wasn't sure who he was calling, he just wanted someone to answer him and listen to his happiness.
"Yes Jeongin?", Felix answered.
"Look, it's Fufu.", he said pointing out at the little fennec fox hiding under a bush while referring to his plushie.
"No it's not Fufu it's Innie.", Jisung said, tickling the 4 year old's sides to get him giggly.
"No it's not me. I'm not a Fufu."
"It's called a Fennec.", Hyunjin told him.
"It's a Fufu."
"Well Fufu is a fennec."
"No Fufu is a fox."
"A fennec fox."
Jisung wanted to jump in because he knew that it was going to turn into a dumb argument between the maknae and Hyunjin but at the same time it was quite entertaining to watch it go on. Hyunjin knew he was right and he wouldn't let it pass until Jeongin agreed with him since he was telling the truth. Felix was a little more thoughtful and went to get Nana to sort it out.
Jeongin finally agreed when Nana told him how there were different kinds of fox and that Fufu was indeed a fox but a fox of this specific kind named Fennec.
"Alright then, Fufu is a fennec."
"That's right.", Hyunjin agreed, sighing.
"Can I hold your hand, hyung?"
He really wanted to hold Jinnie hyung's hand but he knew sometimes the older wouldn't like it. He didn't really mind if Hyunjin didn't want to, Jeongin knew he could always hold Yongbokkie hyung's hand but he knew it wasn't always fine to grab Hyunjin's hand or his whatever to be honest, sometimes it just wasn't always fine to touch any part of his skin, really. He was really happy when Hyunjin gave his hand out.
"Thank you hyung."
They spent at least half an hour in front of the Sumatran tiger enclosure.
Changbin was honestly astonished with how much Jisung and Seungmin knew about those tigers.
He knew he could learn a lot from his kids, he often did actually, one of the most important thing he'd learned so far was patience.
Because at this right moment, he needed patience. It was close to meal time and often, when it was nearly mealtime, the kids would start getting grumpy. Even if they would affirm they were not little kids anymore, they'd act just like toddlers when hungry, not that they'd do it on purpose but it was always the same.
Right now, it was Yongbok's turn. He was complaining that he couldn't see the tigers that, to be honest, were quite hidden in their enclosure.
Jisung was rambling about the tigers' ability to fade in their environment.
Seungmin was out of his wheelchair, trying to get up on the platform just in front of the glass to see better. As Hyunjin and Jisung were both helping their younger brother up the stairs to reach the platform, Changbin knew that Chan was about to tell them all to get down because of how risky it was to have their 11 year old with very very poor balance standing 40 inches (about 1 meter) away from the actual floor. He was impressed when Chan just stood behind Seungmin without a word to ensure safety if the kid was to fall and didn't actually say a word to their danger trio.
Jeongin was running around as he pointed out each of the big cats he could see, sometimes for real and sometimes Changbin wondered where the tiger he pointed out actually was.
Felix wasn't even trying, he was just complaining, really. Minho was standing by his side and pointing the tigers to him but he just didn't want to see them somewhat, so Minho huffed it out and decided to join his grandparents that were taking pictures on the side if the enclosure.
"Appa, I can't see it.", the youngest 12 year old boy whined.
"Well Yongbokkie, you could join the others on the platform if you want but both Minho and I can see the tigers from here and we're not so much taller than you."
"Can you carry me?"
"I'm sorry, Felix but I'm carrying the bag right now."
"Maybe Minho hyung or Harabeoji can carry the bag."
"Yongbok, I'm not carrying you right now, if you're tired you can sit down, ok?"
Felix whined, it felt like he was about to cry. Changbin could almost feel the frustration from where he stood. Really it was nothing, or at least Changbin hoped it was nothing. The weather was really warm today and they'd walked for quite some time already. He knew Felix could get tired in way less time than his siblings would. He was watching close over the boy and was ready to act in case of a grand mal seizure but really it didn't feel the way it did before their teenage son had a grand mal, Felix had only had an absence today, it was a good day, really.
"Let's sit down for a bit together, hum?", Changbin proposed as he watched Felix mumble and look toward his feet, face a little red as he was frowning.
There was a bench nearby from which they could still see the enclosure.
"What's happening?"
"I just wanted you to carry me. You carried Jeongin around all morning."
And there it was the "I'm not a baby but I still kinda am sometimes."
"Oh Haengbokie. Come here for a big hug. You can still come and hold my hand when I am carrying Jeongin so he can see the animals, you know that, right?"
"Hyung laughed at me for holding Harabeoji's hand."
And that was the real problem. Minho had probably had a few misplaced words, just the way he always had, nothing less, nothing more but it had affected the younger boy's mood.
"You're allowed to hold hands, Felix, there is nothing wrong with that, it's great not to get lost and I personally love to hold hands with your Dad or any of you kids because it's reassuring, it means that I'm not alone and it eases my anxiety. I'll have a few words for Minho but don't listen to him, alright?"
"Thank you Appa."
"You're welcome, Yongbokkie."
Mealtime was just around the corner but they knew it could be a little overwhelming for Seungmin and Hyunjin with all the people around and all the noise so they asked if they could have a table on a corner of tge restaurant. They had to wait for a little while for a table to be freed but it was worth it and every adult knew that even if the kids were complaining.
They ended up having a nice meal without having to take out the rice Nana prepared. They got french fries and nuggets for Hyunjin and Seungmin asked for the crunchy vegetables the had brought along with his fries.
The other kids got various meals, most of them having fries, hamburgers and other fast food kind of meal. It wasn't the most healthy meal they could have had but they quality was great really, the restaurant even had Michelin stars so they knew it would be good. Even if it took more time than having sandwich at the snack bar nearby, seating together outside was great. It was the most efficient way for them to ensure that everyone actually ate. It was also so that they could choose the food they'd actually have. And Chan and Changbin really liked to treat their parents / in-laws whenever the couple would let him.
Of course the meal couldn't end well. Thankfully there was no melt down because of food textures from either Seungmin not Hyunjin and no seizure on Yongbok's side. But at the end of the meal Hyunjin's dessert came to life and jumped on his clothes. The kid started crying about the wasted food of course but even more because of the cold sticky and wet feeling of the chocolate ice cream soaking through the fabric of his shorts.
"Aigo, it's alright, it's alright.", Harabeoji said.
"I have clothes for you, Prince, let's go get you changed.", Changbin told the kid.
Hyunjin was sobbing. Big reaction for a simple chocolate stain but they all expected it at one point of the day. Hyunjin was known for those kind of meltdowns triggered by the littlest things (small for anyone else but not for him). The day had gone way too smoothly after all and it couldn't just stay this way.
"I'll take him.", Chan said, grabbing the bag that was by his side.
Walking past people to join the closest bathroom was hard. It was even harder with a sobbing 12 years old. A kid that you literally can't touch at the moment not to trigger some bigger reactions. But the managed it in about 5 minutes quite.
"Prince, come here, come with Dad, we'll clean that up.", Chan said once they reached the baby changing room of the bathroom.
With the man's help (as the kid wouldn't do it on his own until he was done melting down), Hyunjin changed into a skirt that Chan had added to the bag on top of the change of clothes that Changbin had already put inside the bag. They'd recently learned that Hyunjin loved skirts and that the simple piece of clothing could help with sensory issues … There was no bulking denim nor scratchy fabric between the thighs when it came to skirts and that was very helpful especially when they were trying to calm something caused by a bad sensory input.
"All done?"
Hyunjin shook his head no.
"Alright what's happening? What's not fine? Would you like to use the bathroom?"
He shook his head again and gave Chan the two hair ties he kept on his wrist.
"Alright, what do you want me to do, pigtails?"
He shook his head no and signed for braids.
"We need to free the space for other people to be able to use the changing room, but as we're done eating, we can just text Appa that we're gonna wait outside for everyone and I'll braid your hair there, ok?"
Chan handed his phone and headphones to Hyunjin. The kid texted his Appa and they found a place outside where Chan, as promised, did his best to braid Hyunjin's hair into 2 french braided pigtails so no hair would bother Hyunjin. Of course it wasn't the best he ever did but that was as much as he could do in the 15 minutes they spent waiting for the rest of the family. Once done the dad handed Hyunjin his noise canceling earmuffs and took back his phone.
"And you keep track of us, I want to see you nearby Seungmin any moment, it's easier for us to keep up this way."
Hyunjin smiled and thanked his father. It was much better now. He signed quickly to his dad, 1 sign, 3 words.
"I love you too, Sammy."
Once they found Hyunjin and Chan outside they continued to walk around gently until they arrived near the Sea lion Presentation place.
It was still a bit early for that but they preferred to wait for it and be sure to be altogether than to have to wait outside, be splited in tiny groups and possibly miss the show. When they got into the installation it was already starting to be packed with people.
They all got to the wheelchair accessible stands and got to the very left side of the first row to face the seal pool as well as possible.
The sea lions were already swimming there and Jisung was astonishing with how gracious they could be considering their fair size.
He was thankful that his fathers had forced a bucket hat on his head this morning considering how hot the day was. He watched around, only Hyunjin wasn't wearing his hat instead he was hiding from the sun with Nana that had her very own method, she'd carried around an umbrella all day and it was her time to shine.
Jisung was sweaty, normal considering they all were, but he could feel his stump getting moist in his liner.
He hesitated on whether he should or not get his leg off for a little to have his stump take a breather.
"Appa, can I … can I take my leg off?", he whispered to Changbin that was sitting by his side.
"Sure. Do you need paper towels to dry off?"
"Please."
If it didn't feel awkward to do that at home outside it wasn't the same. To be honest, up until a few months ago, before puberty started to hit him (and not his twin), he didn't feel awkward about it. But he was more sweaty than before now and he was less comfortable with that and with his body in general. So it definitely felt weird to just take off his leg here.
Of course his fathers always encouraged him to prioritize his well-being even if it meant having to wipe the inside of his linen with paper towels aside from a sea lion pool in the middle of a zoo.
"Do you need help, Pete?", Harabeoji asked him when he started to rub the inside of his silicone linen.
"I'm fine."
"You're a bit red, are you sure you're fine?"
"Yeah. I'm ok."
He wasn't at ease but he was fine, really. Plus, he was sure he was red because it was hot here.
The show was great. The sea lions were able to jump, they had target exercises and they could hold things on their nose. It was really impressive. Some of them could go grab plastic bottles from the water to put in bins while others could imitate seals or even dance.
When the show ended they all started to get down from the bleachers … they didn't expect what was coming next, really.
1st, how could Jisung forget his whole leg on the bleachers?
2nd, where was Jeongin?
3rd, why was Seumgmin crying?
4th, how did things turn this way so quickly?
There was a simple answer to each of these questions.
1st, Jisung could get around just fine with crutches and let's say he was kinda used to having his fathers think of everything for him when it came to his prosthetic leg. He ended up forgetting it under the bleachers. Thankfully Harabeoji came back with him and waited for him to simply put his leg back on. The man was amazed by his grandson's forgetfulness, really, if his head wasn't stuck to his body he would have probably lost it by then.
"Jisung-ah."
"Yes?"
"Be careful not to forget your head next time.", the man said, laughing but the boy huffed, he didn't find it funny. "I'm joking of course but you should be more careful."
"Yes, Harabeoji."
2nd, Jeongin grew a little excited once the show was done and he wanted to see the sea lions that were still swimming in the pool through the big glass windows of their tank. He'd ran downstairs on his own and got separated from everyone for a few minutes. Thankfully he wasn't far and Changbin found him quickly before he could go any further and before panic could set. It would have been a mess. Along with Minho, Jeongin was the one that spoke the least English in the family, of course he could understand it but it would have been too hard for him to communicate that he had gotten lost because he ran away to see the sea lions from up close.
"Jeongin! Come here! Do you remember what we said before entering the zoo?"
"To stay with Appa."
"And what just happened?"
"I went to see … the dancing lions.", the kid finished in English before Changbin exploded in laughter.
"You were all alone, you could have gotten lost!", the man said, trying to stay serious. "But I'm here so we can go see the sea lions together now."
3rd, Seungmin's hearing aid fell on the floor when he took it back from Nana to have it back on. He'd taken them off for a peaceful show when people started to fill up the place as it was getting too much for him. But when he was putting the left one back, Nana was too close and she accidently pushed the device off of Seungmin's hold. It fell on the floor and the battery just bounced away. The boy was sure it wouldn't work anymore when he saw it there. His grandmother grabbed it and gave it back to him but it was too late. He was crying, assuming his grandmother had broken "his ear". Thankfully Chan was with them and he fixed the hearing aid only for Seungmin to sign that the battery had a problem and it was dead … maybe literally dead.
"We have batteries in the bag, don't worry.", the father signed. He too feared that the battery was actually broken but at least it wasn't the hardest part to replace.
"Nana broke it.", Seumgmin signed clumsily, letting his hands work for him.
"It fell, it's alright, your 'ears' already fell without breaking, Seungmo. We change the batteries sometimes, you know that, don't you? Appa and Dad always have extras just in case."
"Broken!"
"No, let dad fix it.", Chan said as he tried to do quick work, putting the new battery in the device.
He gently touched Seungmin's face to get him to look up at him so the boy could see that he was about to replace the aid in the boy's ear.
"Does it work?", he asked.
Seungmin nodded but he was still crying.
"It's ok baby, everything is alright we're gonna see other animals, hum?"
"Birds?", Seungmin signed, sniffling.
"Yes, birds, baby. Let's try to catch the bird presentation before someone gets even more upset because we couldn't do everything we promised we would.", He ended up saying to his mom.
They managed to catch the second show. Eventually Seungmin completely calmed down as Changbin bounced him on his lap. Once calm the boy started to stim with Hyunjin and Changbin wondered how the medical team still didn't get them Seungmin's autism diagnosis when he saw both his kiddos stimming together.
Jeongin was a little scared of the Andean Condor they presented so he jumped in his Dad's arms and spent the rest of the show sitting on the man's lap.
After all those emotions the kids needed a break and so did the parents. They went to grab ice creams and see the elephants from the top floor.
"My brain is fucking freezing!", Hyunjin yelled in English, not hearing himself well with the earmuffs.
"Watch your damn mouth!", Changbin yelled back in Korean.
People turned to look at them but well who wouldn't look at a whole pack of kids yelling in various languages with the parents being as loud as the kids and the grandparents walking hand in hand like young lovers on the side.
Jeongin was bouncing up and down, imitating elephants and the others joined in, because of course they would. Calm wasn't a thing for them, really.
The parents kept on laughing, looking at their kids. Chan took his phone out to film videos for his in-laws.
Thinking back about the day, it hadn't been perfect but it was great right now. Their family was perfect, really.
The zoo offered water games for the kids to refress nearby the elephants. Changbin was glad he had decided to pack clothes for all the kids once they all started to run under the water sprays. Even Hyunjin participated, holding on Felix' hand the whole time because it made them both feel better and Seungmin went to play under the spray, held up by Minho. Changbin wished they had the boy's walking devices around so he could play on his own.
The parents and grandparents watched over their kids. Harabeoji was smiling like a kid, really.
"Appa, you should go play with them.", Chan said.
"I'm fine.", the man said, laughing.
"Come on Appa!", Chan pushed.
"Chan-ah!"
"Appa"!, the 37 year old man said to his father before handing him his hand.
They both ran under the sprays. Changbin was smiling big, watching his husband being his father's son. He wondered how Chan was when he was a little kid but when he saw Harabeoji play with Jeongin it gave him a few hints.
