All You Really Need is a Push in the Right Direction

Summary:

Chapter 1: “All you need is a little push. Just tell her how you feel!”

Chapter Text

Sasha turned in her swivel chair, staring at the clock counting down the seconds until ten o’clock, her monitor was open on her desk, a case file open beside it. Work was starting to get to her, which is why she was glad Friday had rolled around, meaning Marcy would end up video calling her so they could talk and play games together. Usually Anne would join but-

“Thanks again Sasha, where would I be without you?” Sasha turned in her swivel chair to Anne, dolled up in a blue dress hair tied up with a blue butterfly pin. “No problem, you sure you want to go for the natural look?” She asked, Anne stuck her tongue out. “It’s not a date Sasha, it’s a company party, I’m just going with Mark and his friends because Enmity is taking her girlfriend Luzura as her date, and I don’t want to be a third-wheel.” Anne muttered. “Yeah, that’s not what Mars thinks.” Sasha muttered. “Then just don’t tell her?” Sasha tossed her hair back pulling it up into a small ponytail. “And what? Miss Mar-mar’s jealous rant? Come on Anne, you’ve got to confess one day. It’s so obvious, you two were made for each other.” Anne’s tanned cheeks became red. “Come on Sasha, don't play with my feelings like that.” She said waving her friend off.

“Anne, it’s been ten years. And I genuinely think Marcy’s got a gigantic crush on you.” She pulled out her blue cased phone and swiped over to her pictures. “Look, this was graduation when Marcy came hundreds of miles to come see you graduate with your PHD in herpetology, winter break where you two were cuddling near the fire together, and look come here look!” She held up a picture of Anne and Marcy at the pool, “Don’t you remember that day?”

“It was CPR.”

“You gave her mouth to mouth.”

Anne’s cheeks went red. “The medical term is resuscitation Mrs. Waybright, don’t make it sound dirty.” She pointed at her. Sasha waved her off. “Oh come on Anne, every time we went to the hospital you kept looking at her lip-”

“Can we not talk about this anymore please!” Anne shouted, waving her hands in the air. Sasha laughed and turned off her phone. “Yeah yeah, I’ll spare you the embarrassment. But you really do need to tell Marcy soon.” She leaned against the armrest of the chair. “Marcy may be oblivious but we aren’t. If you don’t confess soon then someone else is going to sweep little Mar-mar off her feet and Boom! Who knows when you’ll get another chance.” Anne fiddled with her purse strap. “I plan to, you know the next time I see her I’ll to say it to her face-”

“Oh my frog here we go again. You said that last time, Anne. It’s not healthy to keep these feelings bottled up.” Sasha said, raising her hand. “Marcy deserves someone who can match her intelectu-” Sasha stood up grabbing her shoulders. “Anne Savisa Boonchuy, you’ve survived living in another world, “frog-vasion”, going up against another world’s best analytics stuffed into a helmet, and dying! Dying Boonchuy!” Anne leaned against the wall brushing her hair out of her face. “You’ve been through so much! But you can’t even tell your best friend you like her.”

“All you need is a little push. Just tell her how you feel!”

“Come on Sash it’s complicated- Wait you know my middle name?” Before she could finish her sentence there was a buzz coming from her phone. “Sorry I gotta take this, we aren’t done talking about this.” She muttered. Sasha sighed walking over to her chair falling against it. She was getting sick of this ten year love drama.

Scratch that she was already sick of it.

Everyone could agree those two had chemistry one way or another, they were a dynamic duo, the perfect disaster, even Sasha was jealous of how the two worked together, Marcy was the brains of the operation while Anne could finesse her way through any problem with her “protag- powers”, as Marcy called it. They didn’t need her to come up with some gay way to spend their time together.

Sometimes Sasha wondered if they were dating and just keeping it a secret from her. It wasn’t like she’d be jealous, she’d honestly be a bit more relieved not to have to set up mistletoe every Christmas in an effort to get them to kiss under it. To Sasha’s dismay it never worked. Marcy was just to smart to get caught in a trap and Anne thought traditions were dumb, even though EVERY single Christmas she’d ask Marcy to make her, her “signature hot cocoa” while they cuddled and watched trash TV until Marcy fell asleep on her.

Like. What. The. Frog.

“Hey Sash, I gotta run, the emerald entrails are on their way to pick me up.” Sasha looked incredulously at her. “What? They are the diver team who explore the kelp forests, who else gave me all those shells?” Sasha waved her off. “Well go on, do you need me to drive you there?” Anne shook her head. “Nope I texted them your street address and they should be picking me up any minute.” Sasha nodded. “Have fun, call me if you need to get picked up or need a ride back to your house.” Anne shot her two pointer fingers. “You too, don’t have too much fun without me.” Anne rushed out of the door.

“Oh trust me Boonchuy, Marcy’s going to have a blast talking about you.” She whispered standing up and watching as Anne got picked up in a car squeezing into the back seat. Just as they pulled out of the driveway her monitor started ringing.

“Right on time.” She said getting comfy in her seat before clicking accept on the video call. Marcy appeared on the other side, her hair tied up messily. “Hi Sasha!” She cheerfully greeted her. “Hey Mar-mar, how’s it going?” The girl was cleaning up her desk moving a few things out of the way so she could move her computer closer. “I was just finishing up a comic panel, I’m almost done. Do you wanna see?” There was a brightness to Mary’s eyes as she held up the drawing sheet. Sasha observed with a laugh, she didn’t know if it was a joke but the paper Marcy was holding up was a doodle of Anne. “Thinkin’ bout’ Anne recently Mars?” Marcy turned the paper around her olive skin turning red. “Oops sorry, wrong one.” She dropped the paper scrambling around her desk, dropping pencils and markers onto the floor in her panic.

“Chill Mars, your secret’s safe with me.” Marcy showed back up on camera her cheeks still red with embarrassment. “Yeah but what if Anna-banana saw!” She looked around. Sasha laughed. “Anne’s not joining us tonight.” She said leaning against the desk. “Huh? Where is she?” Marcy thought for a second before she snapped her fingers. “Oh oh! It’s that banquet thing right? For the aquarium workers?” Marcy laughed. “Yeah, you just missed her, if I’m right she’s going to the banquet now.”

Sasha’s eyebrow lifted. So Marcy did know about the banquet. She wondered if it was a result of Anne telling her about it or asking her to be her date to it. She thinks it was the latter and Marcy was so oblivious, turning her down because she didn’t work there or something. “So,” Marcy dragged out the ‘o’ and Sasha immediately knew the words that were going to come out of her mouth.

‘Does she have a date?’

“So did Anne go with anyone in particular? Like, I don’t know, that Enmity girl?”

Sasha leaned back, getting a sly idea in her mind. “Not Enmity, she’s going with her girlfriend.” Marcy let out a sigh of relief. “Thank frog I thoug-”
“She went with Mark.” There was silence on the other side and Sasha swore Marcy’s eyes became dots. “Mar-mar? Mars?” Sasha waved her hand over the camera thinking her connection was being wonky. But Marcy started moving again, breathing in a long breath. “This is fine! It won’t change much if they really do start dating.” Marcy placed her hands together holding them so tightly that her knuckles were white. Oh she was jealous, Marcy didn’t even know who Mark was and she was already this jealous.

“Don’t worry they didn’t go as a couple.” Sasha said. Marcy leaned back in her seat wiping her sweat-less forehead. “Phew I still got a chance.” She said, “Marcy, you've gotta confess to Anne at some point.” Marcy leaned forwards brushing her hair back. “But she’s just too cool, I can’t just go up to her and be like “Oh hey Anna-banana, let’s ignore how I kept you trapped in another dimension for months on purpose, and get together!” She said sarcastically. “Marcy, are you still hung over that? You felt like you had no choice. You know we don’t hold it against yous-”

“I know, I know, you always tell me that, but this is different.” Sasha leaned back in her chair. “Oh? How is it different now?” Marcy placed her head in her hands. “Now Anne has seen how selfish I am, I’m afraid that if we do get together I’ll mess everything up. She's already acting differently around me; it still seems as if she doesn’t trust me. She’s always got her eyes on me, like if she doesn’t pay attention to me I’ll come up with some crazy plan to get us trapped in another world. Again.” She muttered. Sasha rolled her eyes letting her head fall into her hands. Marcy Wu was so smart, she could solve world hunger if she really tried. But at the same time, Marcy frogging Wu couldn’t tell when someone was staring at her because of how “cute” she was.

Sasha wanted to bang her head against the table. How did she sit through ten years of this?

“Marcy, you admitting it shows you’ve changed, you’re so worried about hurting Anne's feelings over this that you won’t take the risk of ruining her happiness at the expense of your own. That takes some real guts man.” She said Marcy’s face was embarrassingly red. “T’aww thanks Sasha.” Sasha moved the chair forwards. “Hey, you’ve already been through so much, with Amphibia, king Andrias, and the core possessing you, you still deserve all the happiness in the world, Mars. Even if you don’t end up with Anne I’m sure you’ll find someone who is just right for you.” She said, “Yeah.” Marcy was silent for a second.

“So, this Mark person, should I feel threatened?”

Sasha laughed rolling her eyes. “They are just friends Marcy, don’t worry so much.” She watched Marcy fidgeting in her seat. “That’s how it always starts, first they are friends and then boom! I’m Anne’s maid of honor.” Sasha leapt up. “Hey! That’s my job.” She said before leaning back in her chair. “But what if after tonight it’ll go so well Anne will start crushing on him!” Marcy placed her hands on her face. “Yeah sure she will.” Sasha said sarcastically. “Oh my frog, they’d be this dynamic duo and then I’ll just end up being the third wheel!”

“I wonder how that feels.”

“Why does she have to be so good at making connections with people! I mean, remember Valentines day at Saint James Middle school, the one before I moved away? She got so many roses and chocolates from people that admired her!” Sasha snickered remembering the small bouquet Anne had assembled by the end of the day. “Marcy the chess club literally bought you a tub of mint chocolate chip ice cream, and don’t get me started on all the boys you helped tutor. You got way more than Anne ever did.”

“Besides, Anne was only accepting them to be nice. But when you gave her a bouquet. Marcy, she grew roots from the stems and planted them! They are literally still bearing the flowers of your love.” Marcy hid behind her long bangs. “I’m just, I wish I could have confessed to her sooner you know, but whenever I do it comes out all clumsy, like my feet.” She sighed. “I planned everything I wanted to say to her. Do you want to hear it?” She scrambled around her desk for a piece of paper. “It’s here somewhere.” She picked up a few papers giggling a bit. “This is embarrassing.”

“No no, take your time.” Sasha said her mind going back to the words Anne had previously said to her.

‘The next time I see her I’ll say it to her face.'

All Sasha needed to do was start a spark, ignite the flame, push Anne and Marcy together for one last hurrah!

“You know now that I’m thinking about it, you’re right Marcy. Mark might have a chance with Anne. I mean ‘Marc’anne does sound kind of cute.” Marcy’s face wasn’t amused. “Oh har har, it’s Marcanne, it’s literally Marcy and Anne.”

“Well if you don’t man up and change your attitude about this it’s going to be just Marcy soon.” She admitted not noticing the determined face Marcy had on as she moved her cursor across the screen. “Come on Marcy, you are head of the chess club, valedictorian, and a savior of Amphibia, where is your confidence now? It’s just Anne, the least she can do is-” The sound of Marcy’s printer turning on interrupted Sasha. “As I was saying, Anne can only say no. And I doubt she will, but you have to take that chance Marcy. Listen, I know you’re scared of rejection and Anne not wanting you to be a part of your life. But you have to trust me when I say that there is nothing more that Anne would want besides being your friend.” When she looked up Marcy was looking intently at the screen.

“I can’t keep helping you like this Marcy, at some point you have to take action, heck fly over here and ask Anne out, grab her arms, look her into her eyes and just go for it. “I love you Anne!” Just like that, I know it sounds hard but you can’t keep bottling this up, it isn’t healthy for you I mean look how much you’re beating yourself up over this. You made an entire script with your confession written down, but you can’t even bring yourself to use it.” Marcy nodded, playing with a pen. “But what if-”

“She won’t.”

“But.”

“Marcy, just trust me, if you came here tonight and confessed, I can say for certain Anne will say yes. You just have to trust me.”
There was the faint sound of clicking and typing before Marcy’s printer whirled to life printing out a few papers. Before Marcy picked them up she turned to Sasha with a serious expression.

“Alright, I trust you Sash.” She said, grabbing the papers. “Now if you’ll excuse me I have to start packing for my flight.” Sasha grabbed the handles on the chair watching as Marcy tossed her bag onto her bed tossing in clothes and other important documents. “Wait, I wasn't actually being serious when I said you should come here, grab Anne by the arms, and confess.”

“Too late! The flight leaves at midnight, if I run all the red lights then I can make it to the airport with forty minutes to spare.” Sasha got closer to the screen. “I’ll text you when I confess! Bye Sash! Thanks for the advice!” Before Sasha could say anything else Marcy had already hung up on her.
“Crazy girl, always jumping in two feet first. Though it’s hard not to admire her confidence.” Sasha said propping open her case file, now all she had to be nervous about was-. There was a long buzz resounding from her pocket and Sasha pulled it out to see who was calling her. In bright letters it read “Anne.” In full caps. She immediately placed the phone to her ear.

“Hey Anne, do you need me to come rescue you?”

“No, but I just wanted to tell you that Mark convinced me to buy a ticket out of state to see Marcy, I’m finally going to confess! I was just wondering if you could look after Domino for me while I’m gone.” Sasha pulled the phone away from her face glaring at it.

"Cancel it!”

“What why?”

“Swear to Frog- These lovesick idiots!”
