She dropped out of the window of her apartment and onto the soft grass, letting her bag thump to the ground beside her. The door was broken, and despite her being completely okay with this as it allowed her to utilize her window more, it was inconvenient sometimes when she wanted to go on quick study breaks.
"Meow."
She looked behind her, and watched her small cat paw at the gossamer windowpane she had closed seconds earlier. She laughed, the noise tinkling in the air like muffled bells. She got up, her motions a bit strained and mechanical as it had been a long while of studying and she was a bit tense. Upon opening her window, her cat leapt out at her, surprising her and tackling her. She fell to the grass, a bit surprised. But a content warmness reached the tips of her fingers and spread to the rest of her being as she held the kitty in her arms. Her grip was a bit tighter than she thought, and she laughed as she freed the cat. It sprang from her arms and started to run off. Lofi girl looked at the sky, about to get up to pursue her adorable feline, but something caught her eye and she remained on the ground. Her mouth morphed and formed a slightly open circle in concentration as she stared upward. Carefully, intent on not letting her eyes leave the huge expanse above her, she reached for her headphones. They lay limply in her bag, an ever present source of relaxation even in her most stressful bursts of anxiety. Placing them on her ears, she looked off into space, focusing on what had intrigued her so much a few seconds earlier.
It was a brilliant sunset that glittered over the horizon, illuminating the city and bathing the world in an unmistakably gold light. But it wasn't just gold that seemed to engulf reality as it was; awesome hues of violet; shades of fuchsia and rose she had never seen before; deep crimson reds the color of blood; a slight navy splash above that foretold a dark and peaceful night. She recognized even a few fragments of stars that had just begun to litter the sky, brightening it with their small but meaningful smiles. The moon as well was on its way up, a comforting cream colored saucer that might bring to mind memories of warm milk, gorgeous porcelain dishes with one's favorite meal, and lights at the end of dark tunnels.
Bathing in the evanescent light, she was even happier to see her cat’s face right above hers a second later. The feeling of calmness overwhelmed her again and she reached up, petting it from where she lay. Grass whispered around her as the airy breeze shuddered past, causing the grass to dip backward slightly and the trees to bend. The tips of the grass were illuminated as if a small flashlight shone upon them, and the closer to the horizon the blades got, the more illuminated they were. The sun slowly sank. She knew there were only a few more minutes left of this strange euphoria, both the sunset and the haze that it put her in. And still, she stayed. The transient minutes meant everything, were everything, if she just let them be.
Relaxation took her body out of the uncomfortable fetters that had had a hold on her during her study hours and put her muscles to ease. The knots in her neck seemed to uncurl, and the small writer's bump, a little reminder of her imperfection and morality, somehow seemed to lose its form in the light. Floating. Floating in the sky. Gazing towards the clouds. Sky dotted with inky clouds, all grand and majestic in hue. Purple elephants. Ladybug sized dew drops on the grass. Butterfly wings flapping as they make their way home. What a beautiful scene to write about. At home, she might make herself a cup of warm tea with the right amount of milk and honey, bring out her diary and write about these ten minutes that seemed to last forever.
Understanding everything and nothing, Lofi girl slowly lets her eyelids eclipse the wonderland she stared into. Yet, as she had hoped, the pastels lingered in front of her pupils even after they methodically closed out a part of the world, leaving her only to her other senses. Grass blades slicing playfully. Her cat’s fur near her cheek. It’s paw in her hand, seeming to caress it under the moon.
Lofi Girl had been learning earlier about color. She remembered that we are not able to see all of the colors there are in the universe. Those concepts had always interested her. The ones we can't possibly understand.
One of those concepts was infinity. INFINITY. It was a word that put her into a torpid sort of trance. Little faeries would dance along her eyesight when she thought of that word, little faeries that knew answers she didn't and seemed to tell her that she would never. Curiosity blinded her often. But it did not blind her enough to keep her from this, this landscape of raw beauty in front of her.
It was in these moments where she felt infinity. A moment, a single moment, expanded into infinity. That's what it was. That's what life was. That's what the truest and most satisfied blend of pleasure amounted to. This...this queer feeling was what seemed to capture her at small times like these, holding her before the world, making all that she had ever done and all that she will ever do seem the most insignificant and unreal factor. A single moment. That's all she needed.
Beats in her ears. She turns her music up.
