“That’s not how you say it."
“How do you mean?”
“Your, how do you call it? Accent. It’s wrong.”
The word is in guttural Standard. Does it even exist, in his language?
“I was copying your pronunciation.”
"Mine is not ideal. Too coarse, for one. Nobody of importance will give you countenance.”
His wording in Standard is so odd, at times. Like he’s learnt it from ancient texts.
“Okay. Who should I copy, then?”
“Anyone you like. Just, not me.”
"Is there something wrong with the way you speak?"
"Doctor. Let's not get off track."
They were never on track.
