Chapter 1: Left Behind
Chapter Text
“Little Champion, are you…are you upset that your brothers left you behind?” Sidon stared forward, not daring to look at the young boy.
Wind let out a long breath. He sounded so tired. “Are you upset that your sister left you behind….”
The prince’s body grew tense. “That is—that is a completely different circumstance.” With courage or perhaps anger, Sidon turned to the sailor. Ready to defend his sister’s honor. He was stopped by the sad stare of a young boy forced to grow up too quickly, a boy with eyes filled with grief that most men would never know.
“Not to me….” Wind’s voice sounded so small.
It wasn’t supposed to happen. None of this was supposed to happen…but it did. Now wind had a cruel reminder of it for the rest of his life.
That day started out like any other day with his brothers. It was normal.
Maybe that should have been his first warning sign.
The chain had left Tarrey Town midmorning and decided to make their way to the Zora Domain. Since it was the champion’s land, he had a heavy say in what way they would go. He suggested they go over the mountains. Legend thought that was stupid.
Wind can still hear the bickering.
“Are you insane? You really want us to climb over those mountains! There’s a path right there. Let’s just follow that!” Legend insisted.
“Oh, come on, vet, where’s your sense of adventure!” Hyrule had teased.
“Connected to this thing I call common sense and my will to live! We have no idea what’s up there!” The Vet made a point.
We should have listened.
“If we take the path around the mountains, that’s about three possible four days travel. Verse, if we go over the mountain, we are looking at a day, two days top.” The champion explained. It sounded good to wind. He still wasn’t used to this much walking. He wished to spare his feet from two extra days of suffering.
He should have just let them suffer.
“Besides,” the champion continued. “Any major threats on that mountain I took care of long ago. It should be safe.”
‘It should,’ they should have known better. Hylia doesn’t do should. It’s either dead or alive. Ganondorf should have been dead in wind’s time, the legendary hero had defeated him. Ganondorf should have been dead, and the legendary hero should have come back, but that’s not how it works. Wind knows that. It should be safe. Yeah, he should have known it was a lie.
He could do nothing about it, though. Time had the final say on which path the chain took. He chose to go over the mountain. Time thought he was doing the best thing for the boys.
Wind knew that. The old man couldn’t have possibly predicted what took place on that mountain, and the sailor didn’t blame him for it.
It all happened so fast. They had nearly made it to the top by evening and planned to set up camp. Fate had a different plan for them. An enormous hoard of black-blooded monsters awaited them up there. Then apparently, one of them must have pissed off someone in the heavens, or they thought the hoard of monsters wasn’t challenging enough. Because alongside the monsters, a black-blooded lynel joined them. That’s when all hell broke loose.
Steel hit steel, blood was splattered, flesh was ripped. Screams echoed into the night. Wind had lost active consciousness near the beginning of the battle. He was in survivor mode. He refused to die. He couldn’t die, he had too much to live for, and no monster was going to take him away from it. So, he fought, he fought to survive. That’s probably how he ended up so separated from the rest of the heroes. Not that he was even in the right conscious to know that before it was too late. In a desperate attempt to get the high ground. He climbed higher up the mountain, where several large rock formations littered the area. He took advantage of those getting on top of one and shooting from afar.
He always had a sneaking suspicion that Hylia didn’t particularly like him. Seeing as Tetra cursed her connection to the absence goddess, and he had to wrap chains around her to even acknowledge their existence. Forgive him for not loving her when she left his world to die. Sometimes he wondered if she abandoned him—them because Time left it behind. Sky had told the youngest hero stories about the goddess and her lost lover. How she do whatever it takes to be reunited with him one day. The sailor had wondered if the Hero of Time was the closest she had ever gotten to seeing him again. If he was the reason, she left the hero of the Winds. There was an irony to it because Time backstabbed her in the end. He fell in love with an ordinary farm girl and married her instead. He curses her name under his breath and looks away from her statues, disgusted. He do whatever it take to protect the forgotten sailor and leave the goddess to die in the darkest depths below. Maybe Hylia was jealous of the hero of the winds. What happened next convinced him.
The lynel, despite how far away it was, targeted him. Wind didn’t have time to react before a bolt a lightning struck him. It came with enough force that it shot him off the rock. Leaving the sailor paralyzed and hidden on the ground for far longer than he was comfortable with. That time became detrimental. When he was finally able to get up, he shot around the rock. Being met with a devastating sight.
A portal had appeared on the far side of the battlefield, its edges starting to shrink. Only one other hero remained on the field with him. Fighting off a lizalfos and edging his way to the portal before it closed.
An opening appeared, and the hero made a dash.
‘Don’t speak,’ his mind whispered.
Wind didn’t listen.
“Ti—TIME!”
It was a piercing scream, and it did its job. The hero of time stopped abruptly and shot back, eye filled with horror. The world seemed to still as the oldest and youngest gazed at one another. Before, reality hit back hard in the form of a lizalfos’s sword against the old man’s shield. Time pushed forward.
He was trying to get to me.
There wasn’t enough time.
Only one of us was going through that portal…I knew it couldn’t be me.
Wind reached into his bag and pulled out bomb arrows he had secretly bought back in Tarrey Town when none of his brothers were looking.
He equipped three and pulled back the string.
“Forgive me, but they need you more than me.”
He released.
The arrows hit their mark. Creating a large enough explosion to send the old man flying back into the darkness of the portal.
The sailor believed he heard his name being called as the portal closed, but he rather pretend it was his imagination. It hurt less that way.
Now he was alone.
He was alone, with a giant, black-blooded lynel. Who decided at that moment to charge right for him. He rolled out of the way, barely being hit by the beast. He wasn’t so lucky the second time. Wind turned towards the lynel, trying to regain his composure. That was a mistake, the lynel was in position to swing its sword, and it did.
Warm burning blood poured down his face. By some miracle, the swing had missed both his eyes…barely. Wind had stumbled back in pain, but he’s felt worse.
The lynel lifted its sword again, prepared to strike another blow.
Wind ducked and rolled. Scrambling, he grabbed his bow and shot a bomb arrow. He hit the lynel, giving him a second to run. His price was he enraged the beast even more.
He really was the hero of the winds because he ran as fast as them.
Reaching the top of the cliff, he stopped. The sailor was becoming lightheaded, and he was blinking blood out of his eyes. When he could finally see, he froze. In front of him was a cliffs edge, a single tree, and a sign. The same as his dreams accept now he could read.
“JUMP AT YOUR OWN RISK”
The sign seemed to scream at him. He took a second to look over the edge of the cliff. It was a very long drop. A very long drop into a possible bottomless lake, and who knows what in it.
Wind couldn’t dwell on it for too long because the lynel was back. Its rage echoed. Wind drew the phantom sword, taking a stance, despite knowing the odds.
He was hurt, slightly blinded, cornered, and had no idea how to beat one of these things. The champion had told him they were hard enough on their own. This one was seeping with black blood. However, the sailor was one thing. He wasn’t a coward. He stood his ground.
He should have taken the risk and jumped.
Wind raised the phantom swords high and sprung forward. He held his ground, backing off when needed, then taking an opening and striking. If he wasn’t cornered, he would have used the hurricane spin, but he really didn’t want to fall off the cliff.
Then it happened. He lost his footing near the cliff’s edge. He thinks a pool of his own blood and the slick rocks were to blame. It gave the lynel enough time. It hit the phantom sword with so much force it launched it out of the sailor’s hands. Sending it deep to the watery depths below.
Wind became dazed. He couldn’t believe it. His sword was gone.
Then time seemed to slow.
Winds breaths seemed so loud.
He pushed himself back.
He backflipped like he did so many times to escape.
He flipped.
The lynel swung its sword.
All the sailor heard was a loud crack, and then he heard the wind.
“Not to me….” Wind’s voice sounded so small. The sailor turned his head away from the Zora prince.
They sat on the outer rim of the Zora Domain. It was a quiet place behind the palace. A place where not many Zora came. A place where wind could just sit with Sidon and watch the waterfall.
“… I’m… I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gotten cross. Especially since I was the one who asked such an intrusive question. Seems only fair that I answer yours.” Sidon’s shoulders fell.
The sailor looked back at his friend with a small smile. “I appreciate the thought, Si, but you don’t have to. I know your sister meant a lot. Seems rude to do that.”
They fell back into silence as they continued watching the majesty of the waterfall. The sun was starting to set, which turned the water into gold before it disappeared behind the mountains. It reminded wind so much of home. Even if the water wasn’t salty.
“I’m…sorry I said that, Si…. It’s just…they didn’t leave me behind. I—I could have been selfish and kept one…but how is that fair.” Wind pulled his knee into himself. “If anything, I left them. How can I be upset with them if it was completely out of their control? Then when one could have stayed, I decided for him, I—I.” Tears started to stream down winds cheeks and over his scar. “I’m not upset they left me behind. I’m upset about how much I miss them. It’s been a month since it happened, Sidon. I—I miss them so much, they’re my family, and I love my family more than anything, a—and I want my family Si. I want my family.” Wind broke, “I miss them, I miss them, I miss them. I miss champion’s cooking, I miss Vet’s snarky comebacks, I miss Chosen’s warm hugs. I miss Smithy’s understanding, I miss Rancher’s protection, I miss Caption’s reinsurance. I miss Traveler’s healing touch.” He whimpered and took a deep breath, “And I MISS The old man’s Love!...... I love them, Si. I love them so much. Even while apart, I love them. I want my family Sidon.”
The Zora prince moved to the sailor, lifting him up and cradling him in his arms.
“Do—do you think they will still want me after what happened.” Wind whispered.
“Yes,” Sidon stroked the child’s hair. “You are incredible little champion. It’s been a real honor to become friends with you. To take care of you. We owe your brother a great debt, and taking care of something I know he finds so precious is the least we can do….I know losing your leg has made you feel like less of a hero, but you are possibly one of the greatest heroes I’ve ever known.”
Wind, with glassy eyes, chuckled. “Not greater than Mipha, right?”
“Of course, no hero is greater in my eyes than my dearest sister. None can ever match her.” Sidon proclaimed as he stood.
“Good man.” The sailor whispered.
“Also…yes, I would say I am upset my sister left me, but like you, how could I be selfish. The kingdom needed her. I miss her, but I am still so proud of her.” Sidon shifted his hold on wind and placed him on his shoulders. “Hold out hope, little champion…I know your brothers love you, and they will do whatever it takes to find you. Until then, love them strongly even while apart.”

Chapter Text
“Prince Sidon,” A zora guard called out. Bowing once she arrived in front of the prince.
“Hm, oh yes, Torfeau, what can I do for you?” Sidon replied.
“You received a package from the researcher Purah, sir. We wanted to know where we should take it.” Torfeau informed, ready to act on command.
A wide smile spread across Sidon’s face. “Wonderful, take it to Dento and tell him to begin working on it immediately.”
Torfeau bowed and shot off, eager to fulfill her duty.
‘Soon,’ the zora prince thought. He could hardly hold back his excitement.
It had been a month and a half since the zora kingdom had rescued the little champion. A wonderful mouth and half full of raising their new child.
Sidon was scared at the beginning. Of course, who wouldn’t be? That day was filled with so much anxiety it could make a Hylian’s hair go white. It was terrible. He could not see what was going on, on top of the mountain, but his kingdom could certainly hear it. Any sounds of battle are typically awful. These sounds were downright tragic. As quickly as the prince could, he gathered guards and headed towards East Reservoir Lake, hoping that maybe he could somehow help. He had been met with a disheartening sight. A young boy was fighting a lynel on Shatterback Point. A cliff that some zora dare not jump from because it was so dangerous.
The boy was incredible, however, holding his own against the foul beast triple his size. Landing swift clean swipes and perfectly timed drawbacks. It looked like the child was going to win.
Until something happened, Sidon was unsure. All he knew, it was enough for the boy to lose his sword…and his leg within the same minute.
The zora prince was in the water before the boy touched it. Though what he witnessed may haunt him forever. The lake had turned into a wall for the child. When he hit it, the water made a cracking sound. Sidon was not sure if the boy was conscious or not during the fall. He hoped he wasn’t. He can’t imagine the overwhelming pain when the body made impact.
A pool of blood was what greeted Sidon once he made it to the kid. The boy had slowly started sinking, thankfully only a few feet under.
Sidon quickly grabbed the boy bringing him to the surface, he was breathing, but he was fading fast. The zora shot back to the dam, leaving a trail of crimson. Sidon knew he was jostling the child more than he should, but he needed to get him help.
He made a thundering clap as he jumped onto the dock.
“Call for a medic, admittedly,” he barked.
“We already sent for one, your highness.” A female zora responded, trying to keep up with the prince.
Sidon headed straight for the pavilion on the dam. He knew the child had a better chance of surviving there than being rushed back to the palace. He was already pale and fragile.
“Good,” The prince entered the pavilion and gently placed the child on the bed that resided there. The boy looked so small and so pitiful on it, truly a victim of battle. He could not stan for this.
“Bazz, go and hasten the medic. We might not have much time. Tottika, go and inform my father of the events that have occurred. I wish for him not to worry about the kingdom’s safety. Dunma, stand guard. I want no one coming up here except those I called for. Gaddison, with me, let’s see if there is anything we can do until help arrives.”
Various responses of acknowledgment occurred. From ‘yes, sir’s,’ to quick nods before the guards scattered to fulfill their assignment.
Gaddison joined Sidon’s side. The zora prince ripped the cloth around his neck and placed it on the bleeding stump. White turned red within seconds, and the child stirred as sidon added more pressure.
A wet scream blared into the prince’s ear as the boy started to thrash around. He sounded like a poor animal trapped. Trying so desperately to escape but ultimately knows he can’t. At least he has the will to fight. That’s a good sign. If he has the will to fight, he has the will to live. Accept now his thrashing was hurting himself.
“Gaddison! Hold him down!”
The zora did as she was told. Being forced to wrestle with the child. “Calm down, little one. We are trying to help you. You’re safe, you hear. You’re safe. You need to stop fighting us!” Gaddison pleaded.
She seemed to be able to get threw to the boy because he stilled. That or because exhaustion took control. Either way, the zora prince was grateful. If he fought them any longer, then he might have passed. The boy was already as pale as a ghost, at least as far as he could tell. The poor thing had a large gash across its face mixing his hair and eyes with blood.
“Your highness. The medic has arrived.” Dunma announced.
“Tona! Thank goodness for your arrival. This little one needs help now.” Sidon pleaded.
“I’ll do my best.” Tona acknowledged, taking her place where the prince was and started to work. “His wounds are more severe than I thought. This could take a while, your majesty. You may want to rest yourself.”
The zora prince wanted to argue, but he knew she was right. He turned to make his way towards the entry when whimpering breath graced everyone’s ears.
“Si—don….”
The room grew tense with all eyes on the child. Who escaped by drifting back into a state of unconsciousness.
“Prince Sidon, do you know this Hylian boy?” Tona asked, her voice filled with worry.
“I don’t…I don’t think—” Sidon moved to the child’s face, gently wiping the blood off. “I don’t think so…but he feels familiar.”
A week had passed before he got any answers. Meaning the poor boy was in a coma. The zora prince was indebted to both Gaddison and Tona. They refused to leave the child’s side until he awoke. A role Sidon wished he could have filled, but his role as a prince came first. Not to say he didn’t check up on the boy any chance he had. Sneaking away to see him.
Many of the village children had asked about their possible new playmate. Eager to meet him, not thrilled to wait for him. Sidon shared that sentiment. He ran faster than lighting when gaddison informed him the child had woken up.
The zora prince didn’t quite know what to expect. In retrospect, he probably should have seen this coming. When he arrived, the child was glassy-eyed and dazed. He sat up, legs, well, leg hanging over the bed. He was very, very still. Not chipper and relieved, which Sidon deep down hoped for. Tona was checking over his wounds. Doing her best to explain the condition. He was grateful the boy was not in shock, however. Losing a limb can do that to anyone.
Sidon took a deep breath and kneeled in front of the child, hoping to be less intimidating. He took the boy’s hands in his fins, put on a big smile, and spoke as softly as he could muster.
“Hello, little one, my name is Prince Sidon, prince of the zora domain which you’re in right now. Do not fret. You are safe. You are under the protection of the zora….” Sidon paused, hoping to get some reaction from the child, he didn’t.
“It is so nice to finally meet you. You gave us such a scare, but I am grateful you are better. What is your name?” Sidon waited…nothing.
“Where is your family?”
Was that a shift in his eye?
“Are you traveling alone? We saw you fighting on Shatterback point. You’re very brave.”
‘Defiantly a shift, at least I am getting through to him.’ Sidon thought.
“Can you tell us anything about yourself? Tona, Gaddison, and I want to do whatever we can to help you.” Both zora women nodded.
The boy’s eyes changed again, but now it was recognition?
“Si—Sid…Sidon?” The boy barely breathed out. Most likely dry and swore from not using it in a week.
“Um…Yes?” The zora prince was a little confused.
Tears started to stream down the child’s eyes. “Sidon!” The boy fell forward, hugging the Fishman. Continuing to whisper his name.
That was the day little champion became little champion.
Never had the zora prince been more honored and horrified in his life. Link was incredible. He was a fantastic friend, a great swordsman, and an honorable champion. He was also a talented photographer, which was a devastating blow to the zora prince. Who found out from little champion that Link had taken many upon many pictures of their time together. Some of which were rather not flattering. Little champion also happened to be quite the storyteller, describing the images in embarrassing detail. The prince was forced to shoot daggers at gaddison, who was fighting the urge to laugh her head off at the prince’s expense.
Sidon’s heart did melt a little when the sailor started explaining how fondly link talked about him. How he considers the zora as one of his best friends and see’s him as a brother-in-law.
Wind explained his connection to link as well. Something about the hero’s spirit? Asking for his bag, wind pulled out a book full of pictures with Link being very prominent in it.
“So, link is your brother?” Sidon questioned.
“Hmmm, I supposed you could say that I mean….” Wind started to blush. “I see him as a brother. I actually see them all as brothers, and one as a maybe possible depends on the day father figure…. They’re my family either way.” The sailor looked away in embarrassment. Face so similar to links when Sidon would tease him about possibly marrying Mipha.
That settled it for Sidon, as long as little champion was here. He do everything in his power to protect, provide, and love him. Until Link was able to reunite with him, and take the boy home.
As it turns out, the entire zora domain felt the same way. It did also help that little champion was also an incredible charmer. He was playful with the children and respectful of the elders. Praised the women and encouraged the men.
When he finally was well enough to be transported around. Wind became Sidon’s little shadow, following him almost everywhere on his royal duties. So eager and willing to learn how to act like a prince. Asking questions as he sat on the prince’s shoulders. The sailor’s primary mode of transportation.
Not to say the wind couldn’t move on his own, no. He was pretty good at hopping on one leg from place to place. Sidon had given him a spear to help him balance while standing and for defense, just in case he needed it.
Unfortunately, the most dangerous thing to the little champion was the little champion himself. When he played with the children, the young sailor would catapult himself using the spear. Which only gave the zora prince a minor heart attack. Sidon was grateful that the little champion did not go near the palace’s edges. He shied away from those when the zora children got close, cautiously leading them away. Sidon had a sneaking suspicion that the boy feared the height and the water combined. The boy was a sailor after all. He could not fear the water for long, but him being high on the water seemed to bother him. The zora prince couldn’t blame him. He could blame him, however, for the boy’s lack of cautiousness when moving. He can’t tell you how many close calls the little champion had of falling over. He never did, though. The wind seemed to make sure of that. It still scared Sidon, but soon that would all change.
Sidon headed to the bridge that led to East Reservoir Lake. The bridge that was gaddison’s petrol station. That she so incredibly guarded.
Arriving at the end, he gave her a happy wave. “Good day, gaddison. How goes everything?”
The female zora smiled, giving a slight bow as the much larger zora arrived at her side. “Everything goes well, your highness. Nothing to report.”
Sidon nodded and gave a broad smile, “excellent, you are severing your zora well.”
“Thank you, milord.”
A silence let out, and both zora stood there unsure. The zora prince shuffled from side to side, obviously wanting to ask her a question. Gaddison decided to spare themselves the awkward interaction.
“Are you in search of our little champion, Sidon?” Gaddison angled her face giving knowing eyes to the prince.
“Yessss…Yes, I am….Do you know where he might be?” Gosh, how Gaddison knew how to make him crumble. They were about the same age, both playing with link 100 years ago as young ones. So they grew up together. She also wasn’t star-struck by him being a prince. Which he always respected her for.
Gaddison chuckled, “little champion, headed up to the dam with Tumbo, Keye, and Laruta.”
“They’re not deep diving up there, are they?” Worry filled Sidon.
“No, no, I told them to stay near the dock if they decided to swim. Honestly, Sidon, you should have more faith in me. I care about them all too.” Gaddison huffed out.
“I know. I just tend to worry more than I should. Little champion is beloved by link, and the children are our next generation. So, it’s my job to over-worry about them.” Sidon declared proudly.
Gaddison continued to chuckle. “If you say so, your highness.” She elongated her spear, clearing the path for the prince. “Oh, when you see the little champion, can you tell him he needs to stay in the shade. I don’t want him burning his skin. We already healed him up once. I would not like to have to do it again.”
Sidon gave her a teasing smile, “of course I will, dear!”
Gaddison rolled her eyes as Sidon let out a barking laugh.
He made his way towards the dam.

Chapter Text
"Sailor! Sailor, look at what I can do!" Tumbo declared as he took a stance at the edge of the dock. Leaping forward, the young zora flipped in the air and released into a dive. Staying under for only a few seconds before resurfacing with great excitement. "Did you see! Did you see?"
Wind chuckled, "I saw! That was awesome, Tumbo!"
"Yeah, it was! Because I am awesome! Maybe even more awesome than Prince Sidon!" The zora boy cheered.
"Nuh-uh!"
"Fat chance!" The other two zora children cried.
Keye sat on the edge of the dock, kicking his feet in the water. Claiming it would help him get stronger. While Laruta sat on her knees next to Wind playing with his golden locks. Wind was lying on his side, head propped up by his hand as he kept watch of the zora children. His other hand rested on the spear Sidon had gifted him, donning a similar stance to its wielder.
Tumbos cheeks puffed up, full of air because of the other lack of respect.
"I am too awesome! and I could be more awesome than Sidon!" Tumbo hit the water in frustration.
"No one is more awesome than Prince Sidon!" Laruta chimed.
"Especially you." Keye shot rudely.
"Right, Sailor!" Laruta hummed while trying to figure out how to braid the hylian's hair.
"Hmmmmmm, I don't know? Si is really awesome, but so is tumbo, my brothers and sister…and my best friend. Soooo, I'm not sure? I think they're all awesome!" The sailor expressed, winching a little when laruta pulled his hair a little too tight in shock.
"What!" The zora girl gasped.
"Hmmm, I guess that's fair. We don't know your family, so they could be more awesome than—" Keye was cut off by a betrayed laruta. Who without mercy kicked him into the water.
"Hush thy tongue. No one is more awesome than prince Sidon, and that is final!" Laruta huffed. Resuming her work on Wind's hair. "Besides, one of Sailor's brothers is Link, and while it was super cool that he stopped the divine beast, Ruta. We all know for a fact he's not more awesome than prince Sidon!"
"That's…yeah, that's true." Keye agreed while trying to pull himself out of the water. Only for his brother to yank him back in.
"Why do you think Champ—I mean link is less awesome than Si? He seems pretty great to me?" Wind questioned, eager to hear the gossip the children had about his brother.
The zora children paused, thinking over the actions of the champion.
"Well, for starters, he's um… He's a little bit strange." Tumbo expressed. Giving his two cents to the conversation before jumping and wrestle his brother underwater.
"Strange how?" Now the sailor was curious. All his brothers were a bit strange in their own right. However, compared to Chosen and himself, Champion had seemed like one of the more normal ones in the group. He had a Hyrule, unlike the sky man and ocean man. Sure, he had his quirks, but something so strange to disregard his merits what could it be—
"Well, for starters, he rides bears for fun!" Laruta sang.
"Oh, and he will randomly jump off any object. Doesn't matter time or place." Keye breathed out before being yanked back underwater.
Tumbo took the place of his brother. "He also has this nasty habit of blowing stuff up and starting fires!" Keye proceeded to jump Tumbo.
"Not that Link isn't amazing, it's just…. He doesn't really have common sense, and Prince Sidon does, so therefore that makes him more amazing and awesome than link!" Laruta explained, happy to have the final say.
Wind couldn't help but laugh. All the things they had listed about Champion were things the sailor thought was awesome about him. Wild was in tune with nature, despite how many fires he started in it. He was able to tame a bear, something wind didn't even know existed until meeting the chain. Champion also shared the boy's love of jumping off stuff to glide. Something, sky, wild, and Wind bonded over. When it came to blowing stuff up, it was so much fun to watch the champion have chaotic fun, despite never getting to join him. Rancher, Vet, and the old man made sure of that. Every time he tried to join his blue-coated brother, one of those three would snatch him up and hold him like he was some cat. Better than being held like a pig, Wind supposed, but he wanted to have fun with Wild. The Sailor had decided that the three older men were just scared. Scared of Wind's and Wild's combined power because together they would be unstoppable.
"Ah, common sense doesn't really make you a hero, though. If we always listened to our common sense. I would have never left my island to save my sister, and Link would probably never have had the courage to become the champion. Common sense is a good thing to have but not the final factor." Wind shrugged.
"Couldn't have said it better myself, little champion!" Sidon walked toward the children with a broad smile on his face.
"Hi, Si." Wind cheered.
"Prince Sidon!" Laruta waved, abandoning winds hair for the prince. Tumbo also joined her, leaving the water and running to the prince. Jumping up and down at his feet.
“Prince Sidon, Prince Sidon! You just missed it. I did a super awesome flip off the dock and, and—"
Wind turned his attention away from the rambling zora boy and gave it to his brother. Who had deiced to hide in the water. Only his annoyed eyes and head were visible. The sailor gave him a soft smile.
Keye was shyer and a bit grouchier than the rest of the kids. Probably feeling overshadowed by his more energetic brother. Because of that, Wind tried to make sure that he always felt included, even if keye exulted himself.
It seemed to work, and Keye's eyes softened at the sailor.
Sidon, carrying the other two zora children on his shoulders, sat down next to Wind.
"Now, what are you all doing up here, hmmm? There's plenty of water at the palace."
'And guards to protect you.' Sidon thought.
"All the big water at the palace is moving! We could be swept downstream, and you never see us again!" Tumbo expressed dramatically.
"Hmm, fair, but what about the pound at Veiled Falls? You could play there?" Sidon offered in suggestion.
"But it's soooo loud, you feel like you have to scream at the top of your lungs just to talk to one another because of the waterfall." Keye complained, rolling his eyes in annoyance with the prince.
"Oh well…yes, I suppose that would be a nuisance." The zora prince expressed slightly embarrassed.
Wind decided to pity the prince and show him a little more respect. "Is it not okay to have them up here with me, Sidon? I just assumed they could come play in the lake while I watch since I'm living here half the time. We can come down if you need—" Worry filled the boy's eyes.
"No, no, they're fine to be here. I just like having guards posted wherever a small population might be. From now on, if you want to play in the lake, I'll just ask Gaddison to join you."
The sailor gave the prince a deadpan stare. Wind knew that Sidon never saw him in action, up close at least, and with the loss of his leg, he became more fragile in many people's eyes. Sidon was only trying to protect Wind, but it still stung a little.
"You mean Sailor's mom!" Tumbo giggled.
"Yes! Yes! Look at him. He is the spitting image of the lovely guard gaddison." Luruta sang.
"His fins are just coming in a little late." Keye shot, sticking his tongue out at the Hyrule boy. Who, in response, took his spear and smacked the water with it, splashing the zora boy.
"You're just jealous because if I was a zora. I look more fabulous than Si!" Wind attempted to replicate one of warrior's many dramatic hair flips. Not sure if he succeeded or failed.
Roaring laughs echoed between the small group.
"If you were a zora, you still be considered little." Sidon chuckled.
"YEAH, I'm 35! You be a BABY!" Tumbo screamed.
"What? Noooooooooo!" Wind fell to on his back and dragged his hands over his face. "I'm the youngest AGAIN!" Deep down, he couldn't help but smile. "Well, at least I'm taller!"
“Not for longggg!” Laruta chimed.
More laughter erupted at the expense of the sailor. Though he didn't mind, if he closed his eyes, he could almost hear the laughs of his brothers as they traveled together. A melody his heart longed to be apart of again.
"You know…" Sidon gained the sailor's attention. "Since all of you, in comparison to me, are so small, we could have some fun!" The prince smiled slyly.
Wind had no idea what Sidon was planning, but because of that smile alone, he was 100 percent in. "What do you have in mind?"
That's how the sailor, Keye, Laruta, and Tumbo ended up riding on the back of the zora prince for hours on end. At one point, Wind pulled out his grappling hook and let the zora children ski. Making it into a game to see who could stay up the longest. Laruta ended up winning, but the two zora boys claimed she cheated.
Their fun came to a halt when the sun had disappeared over the cliffs. Along with a pale pink blur appearing on the dock.
"Ohhh, nooo," Sidon whispered.
"What's wrong, Si?" Wind asked while hugging the zora's neck.
"Ummm, quick question are you burned?" Sidon started to sweat.
"What? Well?" Wind started to check any part of his skin that was exposed. "I don't think so, but how's my face?"
Sidon looked at the sailor's face for a second. He saw all he needed.
"Well, it appears that I am dead?" Sidon accepted his fate.
"What? Sidon?" Wind hugged the zora tighter.
"It's time to go home, little ones." The zora prince started to swim back towards the dam.
A collection of awes in disappointment hit the prince's ears.
Gaddison was what awaited the group once arriving on the dock. She stood in her guard position, patiently waiting for Sidon to approach.
"Evening, your majesty, I wanted to inform you that the children's parents have requested their return. Seeing as it's a little past the normal feeding time." Gaddison declared.
"Of course, go on then, little ones. Back to the palace with you." The zora prince requested diplomatically.
The children took their leave, being rather agreeable when tumbo turned back, eyeing Wind. "Come on, sailor, if you do not hurry, you'll miss all the food."
"I'll, um, I'll join you guys in a minute. I need to talk to gaddison about something." The boy hummed.
"Come on, tumbo, sailor needs to talk to his mom!" Laruta giggled.
Once the children were no longer in sight. All three that were left behind turned toward each other. Though Sidon did not relax.
"Your majesty…." Gaddison almost growled.
"Gaddison…." Sidon replied, wondering how fast the zora woman could run and if he could outrun her.
They stayed silent long enough for the crickets to make your ears bleed.
Wind had enough.
"Oh, for the love of Hylia, will you two cut the formal royal crap. I know you guys talk like normal people when others aren't looking! Please, speck." Wind huffed, laying all of his weight against his spear.
"Fine," Gaddison took in a deep breath. "I asked for you to do one thing, Sidon!" The zora woman spat as she matched her way over to Wind. Grabbing the boy's face gently but with plenty of force. The touch made wind’s face sting.
"I say, please make sure little champion is in the shade so he doesn't burn himself, and what do you do? You bring him back as red as yourself. Why? Because you kept him trapped out there on the lake!"
Sidon was opening his mouth to give protest. He didn't get a chance. Gaddison was just starting her rant. "You know little champion cannot swim on his own for very long! Did you even think about bringing him back in? And oh, don't you dare give me the excuse of 'I didn't want to disappoint the little ones.' The children would have gotten over it, our little champion is not like the zora children Sidon. He shouldn't be left in the water or sun for that long! You’re lucky it was the afternoon when you came, any earlier and the Sailor could be in much more serious trouble and—"
"It wasn't Sidon's fault!" Wind announced through his trapped face. "We, um, we were trying to narrow down the location of my sword! I was the one who pushed him! It was me I swear." The sailor pleaded while also trying to keep his balance.
Gaddison met the young boy's eyes. Looking for any sign of deception. She found plenty, she knew the boy was lying, but she had to respect his need to protect the prince from her wrath. She let out a long sigh.
"All right, if you say so." She let go of the sailor's face. Wind was forced to readjust his balance. "You better head down to the palace, little one. Tona will likely want to look at the burn and heal you." Gaddison almost whispered.
"It…it doesn’t really hurt." Wind lied, hugging his spear. It always felt different to wind being scolded by women. With his brothers, this sense of inferiority trickled into his mind. When Gaddison, his grandma, or Terta scolded him. He always felt like he truly scared them half to death or disappointed them. He still wasn't sure why? He assumed it probably had something to do with being surrounded by such amazing women his whole life, he hated to upset them.
"For now, it will probably hurt horribly by the morning…. Please go see Tona, Sailor. It’ll make me feel better. Besides, tomorrow is a big day, and I want you as healthy as you can be." Gaddison realized her mistake a little too late.
Wind's eyes lit up. "It is? What's happening tomorrow?" The sailor was starting to vibrate in excitement.
"It's umm, it's Ummm." The zora women went blank. Lying was not a trait she handled well.
Sidon stepped in to save her. "Oh, gaddison, you ruined the surprise! Well, since he already knows, I might as well tell him!" The zora prince smiled and winked at his guard. "Tomorrow, you start special training with lady gaddison here! She, in her expert knowledge, will teach you how to swim and fight in a special way. Yes sir, by the time she’s done with you. You’ll be an even greater hero then when you had two legs!"
"Um, yes, yes, that is the surprise! Oh, darn me and my big mouth. Now hurry on then. You need to heal yourself up and get some food and rest before training." Gaddison fumbled.
The half-lie seemed to work on the sailor who was beaming. "Really! Oh my gosh, thank you!" Wind hugged the female zora, "thank you so much." He whispered. Finally, he wasn’t going to be coddled anymore.
Gaddison hugged the boy back, giving him one last tight squeeze before sending him off. Happy with his reaction. Leaving the two zora alone.
"Soo…" Sidon replied awkwardly.
"Don't think your off the hook. I'm still a little cross with you. However, since I nearly ruined the surprise. I suppose I can let it slide. However, do you have an idea where the sword is?"
Sidon allowed his body to relax, looking down at the much smaller zora. "I do."
"Excellent, then I will take care of our little champion, and YOU can find his sword since that's what he said you were doing." Gaddison declared as she turned away from the prince.
Sidon was left dumbfounded. "Wait a second…I thought I was the prince of the zora kingdom here?"
Gaddison looked over her shoulder and winked at the prince. "You are, but you and I are also the guardians of little champion. So, while he's under our care, you and I are equals. Isn't that right, dear?"
A slight blush spread across Sidon's face before coughing and turning away rapidly. "That…would be correct."
Gaddison had won. She started walking back towards the palace when she remembered the reason she had come up to the dam in the first place. She turned around once more.
"Oh, and Prince Sidon." Her smile shined bright.
"Yes?" Sidon choked his head.
"Dento wanted me to tell you, little champion's leg is ready."

Chapter Text
"Pssst, Gaddison…come on, wake up!" Wind gently poked the zora women's bobbing head.
"Ughhh…little champion?" she responded, confused, lifting her head out of the water. "What's wrong? Are you all right?"
The sailor smiled brightly at her, a little too bright for how early it was. "Yes, I'm fine! I'm just really excited to start training and couldn't wait any longer!"
'Right, she was training little champion now. How did that happen again?' A flash of a smiling prince popped into her fogged mind.
"Oh right…" Gaddison mumbled. She blinked slowly, trying to focus on the sailor. "Well, don't just stand there. Come on in."
Wind tilted his head. "Into the water?" He pointed at it like he had never seen this lake before.
The zora women chuckled. "Yes, the water. I'm teaching you how to swim and fight, remember?"
"Oh…" the boy hugged his spear. "Would… wouldn't it be better to teach me how to fight first, then swim?" The boy seemed to plead.
"Not really," gaddison stretched. "You need more energy and stamina to swim. Since well…you know if you go under you drown. Verse fighting where you can have plenty of breaks if needed."
Wind eyed the water, despite being surrounded by it his entire life, his heart filled with anxiety. Apparently, this anxiety was present on his face.
"Little champion?" Gaddison whispered sweetly. "What's wrong?"
Wind slid down his spear. Hugging his knees as he sat on the dock.
"Well…can…can I tell you a secret?" His voice reverting to its child state.
The zora nodded, not taking her eyes off the boy. As he mentally collected himself.
"I'm… I'm not a great swimmer." Wind felt ashamed.
"Oh…Oh well, that's all right. You lost a leg, after all. I don't expect you to be—" She was cut off by a whine from the sailor.
"No! I mean…." He dug his head into his knees. "I was never a great swimmer…even before I lost my leg."
Gaddison was confused, "but aren't you a sailor?"
Wind let out a long sigh as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Yes…but that doesn't mean I was a great swimmer…. Listen, Gaddison, the water back in the great sea was—Well, I'm not sure what it was, but I know it was dangerous." He looked defeated. "I could only swim in it for 30 to 33 seconds tops before becoming faint. Hylia, even Zora couldn't live in that water. They evolved into Rito, for crying out loud! It's—it's not safe….I—I'm not strong."
Gaddison was now very confused. Zora becoming rito? That sounded like a tall tale, but it was not her job to question the little champion's history. It was to teach him a survival skill.
"I do not understand all you say, little one, but I understand that this scares you." She took the sailor's hands in her own. "This scares you, and the people that would protect you from this are not here. They're not here to protect you, but I am….I am, and I swear on my life, little one, this water will not harm you."
'Again,' her mind whispered.
Wind gave her a small careful smile. "Promise…."
"I promise," gaddison pulled herself out of the water and hugged the boy. Who returned it in full force. "Now, let's get started! By the time I'm done with you, you'll be able to stay in your world's water for 30 minutes!"
Wind chuckled. He was ready. The sailor cautiously entered the water, leaving his spear and other heavy objects on the dock. He felt lighter, but it was definitely harder to stay afloat with the absence of one leg.
He was safe, though. He was safe. Gaddison was right next to him, holding her arms out to grab him if he started to go under.
"1, 2, 3, 4," Gaddison began counting. Wind continued treading.
Seconds ticked by.
“28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33!” The zora cheered.
"I'm… I'm not faint at all!" The sailor cried in victory.
"You're doing amazing little champion! Are you ready for the next part?" Gaddison began turning away from the boy.
"Next part?" He frowned.
"Yes, you're going to grab onto my back and kick your legs. We need to build up your strength if you're going to swim like a zora!" She looked back at the sailor giving him a warm smile.
Wind, with newfound determination, did as she said.
"Now your training can begin."
That's how Sidon found them. Hard at work, making a zora out of the sailor.
When the pair finally noticed the prince. He waved to them, giving a huge smile and yelling.
"YOU'RE DOING WONDERFUL LITTLE CHAMPION!" Sidon clapped and cheered.
"THANK YOU!" Wind sang back in equal excitement.
"I think that's enough swim training for today!" Gaddison chimed in.
"Aww, but I'm doing so well." The sailor pouted, keeping up the steady kicks.
"I know, but you need rest, and I want to see what prince Sidon needs. Without having to scream at him from across the lake. I just don't have you two's volume." Deep down, she knew what the prince needed. His arrival meant it was time. Gaddison's heart was starting to burst with excitement. She couldn't wait to see Wind's reaction to his new leg.
Upon arriving at the dock, Sidon grabbed Wind straight out of the water and lifted him above his head. "Little Champion! You were incredible! It looked as if you were pushing Gaddison around that entire lake!" The zora prince smiled. He really was so proud.
"He was for a bit," the zora woman responded, pulling herself onto the dock.
"I was?" Wind looked down to meet Gaddison's eyes.
She gave a hearty chuckle, "yes."
The sailor started beaming. While puffing out his chest, proud of what he had done.
"Soooo, prince Sidon, did you need something?" She nudged the prince.
"Oh yes!" Turning his attention back to wind. "My father wishes to see you at the palace!"
Wind cocked his head in confusion. "Why?... Did I do something wrong?"
"No! no, no, little one. He just wishes to speak to you about something!" Sidon reassured the boy.
Wind perked up, "all right! Let me just grab my stuff, then we can head over!" The sailor attempted to make a motion so the zora prince could let him down. He didn't, which puzzled the boy.
"Actually, before we head to the palace, I have something I like you to change into!" Sidon expressed beaming with excitement.
Wind giggled, "what, my dripping wet lobster tunic not good enough for the King Dorephan anymore?"
Sidon's face shifted into horror, not realizing the sarcasm at hand. Thankfully Gaddison did.
"No, it is, but Sidon and I have just been working on this for a while, and we really can't wait to see it on you." She smiled softly, like a mother watching her child take their first steps.
"Oh…I still get to keep my old tunic, right?" Wind joked.
"Of course, this is more for your time in the zora kingdom," Gaddison whispered bitterly.
"Yes, now come, come. I set it in the pavilion, and we don't want to keep the king waiting!" Sidon started moving towards it, still carrying the boy.
"Um!" The sailor whined.
"I got it," Gaddison responded, picking up the stuff the boy left on the dock.
The boys waited for the zora women before continuing.
Upon arriving at the pavilion, Wind saw a blue tunic lying on his bed. Similar in color to the zora armor champion donned whenever they were near a lake or river. It matched the sailor's own tunic style, if not a bit longer. It had a wider neck along with white pigment, drawing different patterns into the fabric. From a pentagon shape on the sleeves to scales on the sides to the bottom, showing what looked to Wind to be white waves. He could feel the time spent on it. Next to the tunic was silver jewelry that most zora wore as their dress, except these ones had many more stones. Amber and sapphire were heavily present in the two pieces.
"I…" Wind stared at the gifts, dazed. "I can't accept these. They—They look so expensive, and I haven't done anything to warrant such things. I—I—I shouldn't be getting these I." Wind's eyes were becoming glassy.
"Nonsense…" Sidon whispered, gently setting the sailor down and grabbing the tunic. "You warranted this by just being a light in the zora domains life." Sidon held out a gift for the boy to take.
Wind hesitated, his breaths were becoming shallow, but he refused to cry. He slowly pulled off his old tunic and set it on the table that lined the pavilion before shackling, taking the new one from Sidon's hands.
It was soft and so, so very warm. Wind was fighting back the tears. It reminded him of when his grandma gifted the hero's tunic to him. How it felt so hot because of the island's humidity. Gosh, what he wouldn't give to have that feeling back, but this was an excellent substitute for now.
As he was basking in the warmth a burst of cold hit his head. Sidon was trying to place a large amber jewel on his head. A jewel that was definitely enchanted.
"I can't quite." The zora prince pouted.
"Here, I'll handle this," gaddison whispered. Taking the jewel from Sidon and handing him Wind's belt. "You worry about this."
Sidon smiled softly as gaddison started to mess with the boy's mop, known as hair. She let out a plethora of annoyed noises before grabbing a ribbon and tying the sailor's hair back into a small ponytail. Satisfied, she placed the jewel on his head, allowing the warmth of the tunic and cool of the gem to fuse.
"This will allow you to stay in the sun longer without damaging your skin." The prince informed while helping Wind put on a very elaborate neckpiece that almost went to the boy's shoulders.
The zora's stepped back, allowing Wind to be the one to fix his belt and put on his shoe.
"Well," Gaddison spoke softly. "What do you think?"
"I—" Wind smiled brightly. "I LOVE IT!" the sailor began bouncing. "I love it! I love it! I love it!" He hugged both zora's in a group hug. "Thank you so much!" He giggled, looking up to Sidon. "Am I stylish enough to see the king now, Si?"
Gaddison chuckled at the sailor's sass.
"Yes, I say you are!" Beaming, Sidon took the Sailor's hand. Giving him enough support so he wouldn't have to rely on his spear.
A sly look spread across Wind's face, and he ever so innocently reached out for Gaddison's hand. She raised her eyebrow at the boy but understood that he would not be moving until she took it. Letting out a long sarcastic sigh, she caved.
In one hand, Gaddison held the sailor. In the other, she held the sailor's silverscale spear. Mainly to hold it for the little champion. However, she didn't mind having it just in case Bazz or Rivan saw the trio and decided to tease her. She gives them something to laugh about.
The walk back to the palace was a cheery one. The sailor was gushing about his new outfit and how he couldn't wait to show it to his brothers. How the champion be excited that they could still match. How Vet would probably want to steal the necklace because he had a thing about jewelry. Both zora couldn't help but listen and smile.
Deep down, they were grateful the boy was looking at the positive, joyous reunion where he just needed to show them a new tunic. Not the realistic one where his family would face the reality that the sailor lost a leg and had a permanent deep scar slashed across his face. They would not dwell on it, though. If the young sailor did not think that way, they would not either.
Entering the domain, the group was only spotted by three zora. Seggin, Laflat, and Mei, which Gaddison was grateful for. She could deal with their teasing looks as she held the boy's hand. She did come close to knocking Seggin down. When he quietly whispered, "my, what a handsome family." The zora women did not condone harming your elders. However, there was always room for exceptions. Thankfully she was pulled along by Wind, so no elders were harmed…for now.
As they strolled up the stairs, the sailor let go of the zoras hands. Double-checking his appearance before entering the throne room. They waited patiently until the boy was ready. When he decided he was presentable enough. He took their hands once again and entered.
"Young Champion," the zora king's voice echoed. "Welcome. I've been waiting for you!"
Reaching the platform in front of the king. Wind bowed in respect, nearly tripping and landing on his face. Gaddison was still there giving him support. When he was adjusted, the sailor took back his spear from the zora woman.
"Now, now, young one, what have I said about bowing? You are basically family to us! There is no need for such formalities." Dorephan chuckled with a warm smile.
"Sorry, your majesty," Wind's face was slightly red with embarrassment. He scratched the back of his neck as he composed himself. "Force of habit, anyways, what was it you needed from me, sir? You know I'm always ready to assist the domain. So just say the word!" The boy puffed out his chest.
What he said was true. Wind was always ready to take action and help the zora people in any way he could. He felt it was the least he could do after all the kindness they had shown him.
King Dorephan's eyes softened at the boy. The sailor's heart reminded the king of his late daughter. Always ready and eager to be of help to anyone and anything. "I need nothing from you right now, little one." Wind's shoulders fell in slight disappointment. "I do, however, have something for you. If you'll do me the honor of taking it."
Wind's eyes lit up in shock. "Your highness, I appreciate the offer, but your kingdom has given me so much. I mean, look at this tunic! Si–I mean, Prince Sidon gave it to me just ten minutes ago, not to mention the jewelry! This spear was a gift. Also, if you consider the fact that prince Sidon saved my life, you could really consider that a gift as well. Not to mention the fact that you're letting me reside in your kingdom as if I'm a zora myself–I can't in good conscience–"
The sailor quieted himself as the king raised his hand. A simple gesture that demanded silence. The king's face was stern. Wind worried he had made him mad.
Was it inappropriate to deny a gift from a zora? The sailor fretted.
The zora king let out a long sigh before smiling at the small Hylian.
"I appreciate your apprehension, little champion. Most men would not hesitate being gifted such treasures….It shows your heart, and you have a very grateful one." The sailor hugged his spear. To this day, he still was unsure how to handle compliments.
"However," Dorephan continued, "you must understand how embarrassing it is for me."
The sailor's face shifted in confusion. What was embarrassing to the king? Wind? Having to take care of the sailor? The boy's lobster tunic? No, that couldn't be. That tunic was a work of art.
The zora king chuckled at the boy's expression. Apparently, it was a very easy one to read.
"It's embarrassing for me because I allowed such an important member of our dear Link's family to be so outrageously harmed on my land…." Dorephan's expression sadden. "The mountains and cliffs guarding the domain are my responsibility. I should have done something to ensure safer passage over them. I have failed you, Link, and deep down, I have failed my dear Mipha."
Wind was about to speak in protest, wanting to spare the king these thoughts. Though he was not given a chance.
"Do not try to sway me, little one. I can see it in your eyes. I failed you, and now you are burdened with my failure for the rest of your life." The king looked to where Wind's leg should be. "What I have done prior to this is the very least I could do for what I have put you through….However, I hope this can help atone for it." The king gestured to Sidon, who was now holding something wrapped in velvet cloth.
The zora prince kneeled at the boy's side. Holding the item out for the sailor to open. Wind hesitated, holding a hand close to his chest. Unsure if he should genuinely accept the gift. He looked to Gaddison, pleading that she step in and talk some sense into the king. She didn't. She gave Wind a gentle smile and nodded the boy along.
Looking at Sidon, the zora gave him a grand smile. There was no escaping this, apparently. The sailor slowly placed his hand on the cloth. Pulling it away from the item hidden underneath it.
"It's armor for my leg?" Wind asked, grazing his fingers over the ornate pattern decorating the cool metal.
"No…" Sidon whispered, "it's not armor for your leg. It's a new leg…."
Wind froze, wide eyes on the prince, "w-what?" He whispered.
"It's a prosthetic leg, definitely not as good as your actual leg, but we made due." The zora prince grew excited. "I had it made special just for you! It's made from material from all around Hyrule. The metal was mined by my fellow champion, yunobo! Such a kind-hearted Goron, he mined some incredibly strong metal so that you never have to worry about it breaking if an enemy were to attack you. Oh, but I also had the researcher Robbie design it with some guardian parts. That way, as you get older and taller and stronger, the leg will grow with you! See this stone here? The diamond-shaped sapphire? Well, Chief Riju supplied that. She told me you two were friends! So she was happy to help. It's an enchanted sapphire, though I'm not sure what it all does? Riju said she spared no expense. Knowing her, that's a good sign. I then had it sent to Purah. She made sure to test everything and see if there were any defects. She didn't find any, so it was sent here, and Dento put the final touches on it! So what do you think?.... Little champion?"
Sidon, in his excitement, neglected to look at the sailor. If he had, he would have seen the slow descent of tears streaming down the boy's cheeks.
"Oh–Oh little one, do you, do you not like it? I assumed–" Sidon was at a loss for words. Wind never acted like this when he was happy. He was a ball of energy. Did he not like the gift? Should he ask first before making it?
The boy stayed still as the statue of Mipha. When he finally spoke, Sidon could barely hear him. A soft, "Is this really mine…."
The zora prince relaxed, eyes filled with love for the young one.
"Yes…."
Wind dropped his spear and fell forward, wrapping his arms around the Zora prince's neck.
"Thank you…thank you, thank you, thank you, I love it, thank you, thank you." The boy relentlessly whispered.
Sidon handed the leg to Gaddison. He wanted to hug the boy properly. Which he did. After a moment, a third presence entered. The zora looked up to see his father's hands on his and the sailors' back. He gently picked them both up and held them safely against his chest. Sidon came close to crying himself. It had been a long time since his father hugged him.
Sidon couldn't have been happier. Little champion loved his gifts. He was on the road to healing. His father could rest easier now that he had helped mend his mistake. Everything was okay.
The zora prince looked back down to where Gaddison stood. She hugged the Sailors leg. Guarding it with her life. She met Sidon's eyes and smiled.
Yes, everything was going to be okay.

Chapter Text
And everything was okay. Another two and a half months had passed in the zora domain. Like everything, they had their ups and downs, but nothing they couldn't handle together.
Little champion was blossoming. He adjusted to his new leg fast. Faster than anyone could have predicted. Though to the boy's credit, he didn't wear it all the time. Some days he wore it from morning to night. On other days he would go legless. When asked about this by one of the children, he just smiled and shrugged. "It's a tool, not a crutch. I'm an adventurer, something could happen, and it could be lost forever. Then what? I need to know these skills with or without." Gaddison and Sidon couldn't be prouder with that response.
Gaddison had been diligently training the sailor. The boy was now a master swimmer, able to beat a few lazy zora if he wanted to. He had also been married to his spear and sword training. Both with and without his leg. He was determined to be able to defend himself by any means necessary.
Around the same time, the sailor discovered that Dunma was the equivalent to a zora teen. Overjoyed could not begin to despicable the feelings Wind had felt when he found out. He finally had a friend who was near his age. Someone who was going through the same trials and tribulations. With Sidon's blessing, the two teens became sparring partners. Pushing each other to become their best selves, but also an understanding ear.
That's who he was with when it happened. When it finally happened.
"Again, don't think I'm complaining about all the stuff Sidon and Gaddison have done for me. It's just I wish they would trust me more. This has been my home for over four months. Am I not entitled to want to protect it?" The sailor and zora female descended the ramp leading from the dam at a steady pace. Wind still clutching his spear, never being able to let go even after receiving his leg. Not that the zora minded, they could never find his sword.
"No, no, you are. I just think you're overthinking what protecting the kingdom is. Listen, standing guard at the entrance of the city WITH my dad isn't the most exciting thing ever. It's still a job that needs to be done, and I'm protecting the domain that way. I think because of your adventures, you think you have to do this big elaborate save to protect something. When you really don't. You just need to be aware and willing to help, and you're doing that." Dunma advised, yet showed sympathy.
Wind ran his hand over his face dramatically. "Uuuugggghhhh, your right. I know you're right. I wish you were wrong, though."
The plum zora snorted. "You knooowww sailor, if you wanted to go on that patrol downstream, you could have just asked his majesty." Dunma knew she was about to set the young one-off.
"I DID! But he went, 'oh little Champion, patrol downstream is perilous that zora chose to swim rather than walk.' Like, what's all this swim training for if I'm never allowed to use it in the field? I swear I–" Wind stopped dead in his tracks. Squinting his eyes at the domain. Something was off. "Dunma…was there something scheduled for today?"
The female zora took note of the sailor's demeanor and followed after. No longer were they friends having a friendly chat. They were a guard and an adopted prince of the zoras. "Not that I was made aware of."
The sailor hummed in annoyance. He didn't like this. Bringing up his hand, he nodded two fingers. Letting Dunma know to move forward but to be in stealth mode. As quiet as a cricket and as swift as the breeze the teens moved towards the domain.
Upon arriving, Gaddison was not at her post.
'Something must be very, very wrong,' the sailor's mind screamed.
Gaddison would never leave her post unless it was an emergency. Dunma must have been thinking the same thing because she tapped Wind on his shoulder to warn the boy to crouch. Which he did. Hugging the railings and listening for any signs of distress.
They heard none….
What they did hear was concerning.
Voices…the teens listened.
Dunma counted six voices she did not recognize.
While the sailor recognized them all. His heart cried. Can it be? Is it– please, for the love of everything good in this Hyrule, let it be them.
The boy sprinted, dropping his spear and ignoring the cry the plum zora made as he broke formation. All that mattered was getting to the voices. Wind slammed into the balcony that overlooked the plaza. Eye's desperate, his heart yearning and screaming his family's name.
Tightly gripping the railing to the point, it made his knuckles blue.
It was them….they were here…they came back.
His family, his brothers, they were in reach.
Wild was talking with Sidon and Gaddison, Winds knows not what of, but he didn't care. His brothers were here, his brothers were here, and yet he couldn't move. His body froze, locked, staring at something he loved that was so close. He wanted to scream with joy, call their names, but nothing came out. His mouth stood at the ready, but no words touched his lips.
He needed to get their attention.
Finally…something, an unintelligible noise, left his lips. A cross of a plea and a scream. It did not matter to the sailor. His brothers looked at him.
Despite the hero's spirit, they shared. They were all very different people. How they reacted confirmed that.
The Chosen Hero fell to his knees, grabbing his chest. "Hylia, is–is it really him?"
The Hero of Four stayed still as a statue, afraid if he moved, then the sailor would disappear and forever be gone.
The Hero of Legend hugged himself and covered his face. "If this is some sick trick, I'm finding whatever god is responsible for this and killing them!" Tears ran hot in his eyes.
The Hero of Hyrule had the brightest smile on his face as he held his hands close to his chest. Not taking his eyes off their youngest.
The Hero of Twilight held the Hero of Warriors. For the latter could not stand. His trembling body poured tears that could flood the land. The rancher contributed. Silent happy tears are what he wept, holding the Captain close to his chest.
The Hero of the Wild didn't know how to react. Taking a step forward out of shock and leaning on the zora prince. Whispering, "He's alive, he's here, and he's alive."
The Hero of Time was the last, eyeshot wide as he watched his youngest successor. Dashing forward when he noticed the boy climbing over the railing to jump down. He lifted his hands as he reached for him.
Time caught Wind in his arms. The boy tightly hugged the old man's neck, hiding his face in his shoulder, refusing to let go. A joyous, boisterous laugh escaped the elder's lungs while he twirled them around. The sailors' tunic danced in the breeze, and jewels glistened in the sun. Accompanied by the steady taps of the Sailors leg hitting the olders armor.
Soon the old man slowed and fell to the ground, still embracing the boy like a lifeline.
The sailor whimpered, "You–you came back for me?"
Time gently led the sailors' eyes to meet his. "Always…." he quietly said as he ran his thumb over the sailor's scar that split his face. Mortified by how deep it was. "I did this to you…."
"No, you didn't. I did this to myself. Don't–don't even start that." Pushing his forehead forward to meet the old man's. Not caring about the enchanted stone that sat there. "You tried to get to me...Did you forget that...." Time let out a long, drawn-out breath, and they sat there forehead to forehead for about a minute.
Until the others couldn't take it anymore and engulfed them. The Smith and the Traveler were closest to him, each taking one arm and holding it captive. Hyrule leaned in and kissed the sailor on the cheek, whispering how happy he was to see him. Four hid his face in Wind's hand. He needed to make sure he was real. Sky slid right behind him, cupping the youngest cheek to look at him. Smiling sweetly while he blessed the heavens. The Vet came in behind Hyrule, placing a hand on the sailor's shoulder. Before the Traveler pulled him in. He needed the hug as well. Warrior came directly behind the sailor, caging him in with Twilight to the left and Wild to the right. Pulling them all closer in.
Wind could have stayed like that forever, content in the presence of his brothers and their overflowing love, but all good things must end.
A distressed noise came from the Traveler causing all eyes to look at him. "Sailor! What happened to your LEG!"
"Oh….right about that."
In all honesty, they took it better than the sailor had expected. Only the old man passed out. Granted, that could have just been from all the stress he was under. Not the sailor's missing leg itself. Thankfully Sidon was there and graciously carried him.
The others, well, Gaddison had to knock some sense into Champion, Captain, and the Veteran, mainly the champion. She shared their sentiment of wishing to see the Lynel gutted and ripped from limb to limb. However, it was not the time for that.
"Link, by Mipha's grace, you do realize how irresponsibly stupid that is! You're not in a stable state to be going anywhere near that mountain or fighting that Lynel." The Zora women scolded.
"When have I ever been in a stable state of mind!" The champion argued. Which, in all honesty, is a valid argument.
However, Wind was taking note of the rest of the zora kingdom. They were uneasy and worried. This really wasn't the place to be discussing these matters.
Putting his fingers in his mouth, he whistled like Wild had taught him to. All eyes were on him. "Yes, excuse me, maybe we should take this up to the dam? That way, we can let Time rest and allow the people to go about their day." The sailor looked at Sidon and flashed his eyes over to the zora.
The prince understood. "Yes, excellent idea, Little Champion. That would be a far more suitable place to discuss this."
"And a much closer place to the cliff." Wild planned.
"I am this close to putting a leash on you. Watch it!" Gaddison informed the champion. A hundred percent willing to do what she said.
The party moved that way, with Sidon taking the lead and Gaddison in the back. Wind tried to join the zora prince, but Hyrule and Four sandwiched him in, so he decided to stay put. The Traveler had winds hand in a grip so firm the sailor thought he never let go. While Smithy hugged his arm, continuing to hide himself in it. The sailor would ask about that when they have a moment to themselves.
Upon reaching the dam, Sidon laid down the chain's unconscious leader on the bed that had been the sailors for the last four months. Before rejoining the group. Dreading what was going to happen.
Arguing is what happened. Gaddison and champion went at it. What courage the champion had to fight the zora women was indeed a gift from the heavens. Course, he was going to lose, but the effort was appreciated.
The sailor sat watching his brother and adoptive zora mother's disagreement, back pressed against the pavilion. Still snuggled between the other youngest heroes, Hyrule had forced them to sit. Wind realized it was because of his leg, which, oh boy, if he thinks walking up to a dam is too much for him, he will lose his head when he sees him fighting a monster in this.
The youngest broke out of his thoughts by the champion's scream as Gaddison threw him into the water. Before pointing her finger at the Vet and Captain. "Either of you tries to climb that mountain. You're going into the lake as well! Got that!"
"Yes, ma'am," the warrior responded, impressed and terrified.
"Hey, Gaddison." The sailor yelped.
"Yes?" The zora women turned sweet.
"Champions swimming away." The sailor gently pointed towards wild.
Gaddison paused for a moment taking in what the boy had said. Before whipping around to see the champion swimming away. "DANG IT, LINK!" The zora women dived into the water.
"For Hylia's sake, Pup!" Twilight yelped, slightly annoyed. Running to the edge of the dock. Eyeing legend and warrior. "Don't even think about it." He growled at the two heroes.
The youngest three heroes and Sidon watched the chaos unfold. Gaddison water-wrestled Link, the hero of Wild, kicking and screaming as the zora women pulled the Hylian back to the dock.
Vet and Captain silently cheering the champion on. Twilight looked disappointed and desperately wanted the old man to wake up and wrangle the middle children.
Sky stood at the furthest end of the dock. Staring up at the cliff. Looking at the exact spot the sailor had fallen. Though he hadn't told them that yet. He didn't want to tell them.
He pulled Hyrule and Four closer. "I missed this….."
The Smith let out an airy chuckle. "Really? This is what you missed?"
The sailor kissed the Smith on the side of the head. Sincerely wanting the older boy to relax. "Yeah…" pulling away, he noticed a second sword handle on four's back. "You duel wielding now, Smithy? Captain's shorts jokes got too much for you, so you came packing?"
Hyrule snorted, causing the Smith to reach over and punch him in the arm. "Ha Ha, very FUNNY sailor and no… I'm not dual wielding." Four pulled the sword from his back. It was wrapped with care in a cloth shell. Four meticulously pulled at the garment, slowly revealing the handle.
"My sword." Wind said so innocently, unaware of the trauma his sword had created. "How did you? It was knocked out of my hands and sent flying into the lake. We have been searching for it for months. How?" The youngest needed to know.
The Smith wanted to forget.
"That black blooded bag of filth." The Smith's eyes became glassy, and his body stiffened. "He–he had it. It….it was covered in–" Four couldn't he couldn't relive that interaction again.
The sailor didn't understand entirely but didn't care. Seeing this topic make his brother upset was enough. He pulled the Smith down. Letting the older boy lean on his lap. Brushing his fingers through the boy's long hair.
Once Four started to calm down, Hyrule faintly spoke into the sailor's ear. "We don't know what happened. We got separated and heard him wail in the forest, and when we got to him. He was huddled on the ground clutching your sword. He never told us what exactly happened."
And they would never know what exactly happened.
They never know how that black lizalfothe used their youngest sword against his brothers. How it chuckled when the Smith demanded answers….how it slid the sword over his neck to imply the sailor was gone. How it glorified the dried blood on the handle.
They never know how the Smith split into four parts. How they fought like a savage beast to get the sailor's sword. How when the monster dropped it. He couldn't let it go. In wake or in sleep.
The sailor would never know how much believing he was dead destroyed the Smith. The sailor would never know how he somehow became a part of him, an extension. Somehow believing he was dead, felt the same as if Red, Blue, Vio, or Green had died. He felt broken.
What the Smith hated the most was he didn't know why. He loved Wind, but he loved all his brothers. Why did the sailor have the same level as a literal part of him? Maybe it was because he looked just like him. The two young ones had joked about switching clothes and swapping hairstyles as a prank on the others, but they never did. No matter the reason, it hurt, but now he knew his brother was alive and safe for the most part. Losing a leg must have been hard on Wind, but four much rather the boy lose a leg than his life. Call him selfish.
The sailor bent down and placed a quick peck on fours temple. "It's okay, Smithy. I don't need to know. Thank you for taking care of it for me. I was really starting to think it was lost for good. Thank you…thank you." Wind whispered.
The older hero's breath hitched at those words and smiled. It was going to be okay.
The three youngest turned their attention back towards the oldest. Sidon was now holding the champion up in his arms like a mother holding her fussy toddler. He was definitely acting like one.
"Oh, for the love of Mipha." Wind placed a hand over four's ear. "CHAMPION, WILL YOU CUT THAT OUT! I DON'T WANT YOU TO GO UP THAT MOUNTAIN!"
Wild froze, and all attention was turned toward the youngest, all except the chosen.
"What?" The wild hero said.
"I don't want you going up that mountain. Actually, let me make it clear I don't want any of you going up there. Since I am the one you're trying to get revenge for, I feel like I should get a say, and I say no one needlessly puts themselves in danger for me. Got it!" The sailor glared down at his family.
Half of them were bummed out, the other half let out the longest sigh of relief. Mainly twilight. Wind could hear the older hero whisper. "Thank Hylia."
Then there was sky, sky just stood there frozen and neutral. That worried the sailor.
"Chosen," he called, "are you alright? You haven't moved since we got here–"
The sailor was cut off by the sound of piercing thunder. Looking up, the entire top of the cliff was engulfed by lightning bolts. Big ones, ones that make the earth tremble and shake like an earthquake. Then in a snap, they were gone. Disappeared as if they were never there.
Wind looked back to the chosen hero and could have sworn he saw lighting dancing around his fingers as he turned to face the rest, smiling softly. "Yes, I'm alright, sailor, just taking it all in."
The boy's face was in shock, sky did that, didn't he? He was about to ask when Gaddison interrupted him.
Scolding the champion. "SEE! If you were up there when the lighting struck. You would be dead, Link!"
"Pfffftt, I would have lived." Wild explained from Sidon's arms.
"NO, YOU WOULD NOT HAVE!" The zora woman was close to killing the champion herself.
"Soooo, we're just going to ignore the fact that Chosen can summon lighting?" Wind faintly spoke to the two heroes next to him.
Four shrugged.
"Smithy can shrink. You are the master of the winds. I can turn into a fairy. Chosen being able to control lighting isn't that big of a deal, at least I don't think." Hyrule expressed deadpan.
Both other boys agreed, nodding their heads.
The sailor leaned further against the wall, getting more comfortable. Back to the entertainment, I guess.
The youngest boys had to hand it to the champion. He could hold an argument, and so could gaddison. About ten minutes in, Sky and Twilight sat with them, tired of the middle heroes' childish antics. Sky was kind and draped his sailcloth over the heroes that weren't being a nuisance. When Dunma arrived, holding a basket and the sailor's spear.
"Oh duh, I completely forgot I left that behind." Wind attempted to get up, but Hyrule and Four wouldn't let him. Too comfortable in the youngest presences. "You know you'll have to let me go at some point." The boy joked.
"You wanna bet?" the Smith playfully hissed.
The sailor rolled his eyes and waved to Dunma. Happy to see his Zora friend.
"Hi, sailor!" The plum zora waved, looking down at the heroes. "I brought your spear, and the king asked me to send up some rations for your party as well. Since he's not expecting you to come down anytime soon."
"RIGHT, shoot, King Dorephan. I need to inform him what happened." The boy once again tried to get up, only to be held down by his brothers.
"No worries, he's already been informed. If anyone needs to see him, it's Prince Sidon." the teen zora giggled. "He is about to be a very busy zora."
"Why?" Wind raised an eyebrow, very, very suspicious.
"Welllll," Dunma scrunched her nose teasingly. "He might have declared that in two days' time, the zora people will hold a grand feast and or festival. In honor of our beloved little champion reuniting with his companions."
"WHAT!" the sailor nearly jumped out of his skin. "No, no, no, no, NO! Rancher, wipe that smug look off your face. SAME goes for you too, SMITHY." The sailors' aggression toward being celebrated caused the boys to laugh. They couldn't help it.
Wind puffed out his cheeks. "Siddddoooonnnn," the zora prince turned his attention to the little champion, still holding the big champion in his arms.
"Yes, little one?" The prince smiled as wild tried to slide out of the zora's arms.
"Please tell your father the domain does NOT need to hold a festival in honor of my brothers returning." The sailor pleaded.
"The domains holding a festival in honor of your brothers returning?" Sidon asked.
"Yes, in two days!" Dunma added, knowing what was about to happen.
"That's….A FANTASTIC idea!" The red zora smiled brightly.
"Nooooooo," Wind dramatically fell back.
"Sorry, kid." Twilight ruffled the sailors' hair.
"Oh, there's so much to be done!" Sidon started swinging Wild around. Forgetting he had the Hylian in his arms. "Decorations, music, oh little champion, do you think you will be willing to conduct a few songs? Or would that be considered tacky? Since you're being celebrated. Also, I need to talk with Dento about getting proper zora garbs for your family. Don't worry, little one will just add a few more jewels to yours, and you should be fine. The other needs to be fitted, though. Will two days be enough time, though? And the food….LINK Where did you go?"
"You're still holding him, your highness," Gaddison informed the prince.
"Oh yes, right, Link!" Sidon lifted the champion to meet his eyes. "Link, you are an incredible and amazing talented cook. Would you do the domain the honor of being the head chef for this festival?"
Wild was a little dizzy from being swung around, so his automatic response was a simple nod of the head.
"Excellent!" The zora prince tucked the champion under his arm. "We will head back to the palace and get things started. Gaddison, why don't you take um, Veteran and Captain, was it?" He looked to legend and warrior, who nodded. "Yes, can you please take them to be fitted by Dento? If he starts now, he will have it done by the festival! Dunma, will you be a dear and attend to the rest of them?"
Dumna bowed, confirming she would. "Thank you, now come along, Gaddison. We have so much to do!" In a flash, the prince was off, wild underarm, followed by a dumbfounded zora woman and two dumbfounded heroes.
"Look what you've done," Wind glared at the plum zora. Before everyone burst out laughing.
The sailor sunk into his brothers. Holding them close and tight as he stared at his leg. It had been four and a half months since he lost it, which was awful. Yet, it didn't matter anymore to him. Yes, he lost a part of himself, but it never hurt as much as losing his brothers. He would rather lose his other leg, his hands, his eyes, his ears, heck, even his heart. He just couldn't stand being apart from them like that ever again.
Because deep down, no matter what happened to him, he would always and forever love them.
