“Huh…”
Beca smirked as she sat back on her heels, holding the collection of polaroids in her hand.
“Hey Chlo! Come look at these!”
Chloe’s head poked around the doorway of their bedroom, a bemused frown on her face, “Beca Mitchell, are you procrastinating again?”
“No!” Beca pouted a little, “Okay, maybe…”
“Becs…” Chloe rolled her eyes as she joined Beca in the bedroom, “We’ll be pregnant with our next kid before the place is packed up at this rate…”
“You’re being mean…” Beca pouted harder, holding the polaroids protectively against her chest with one hand as the other rested on the beginnings of her slightly swollen stomach, “I have baby brain, it’s your fault for knocking me up.”
Chloe giggled, “Alright, I’m sorry. Show me what you found.”
“No.” Beca poked out her tongue, “You were mean and now you don’t get to see.”
“You are such a child!” Chloe got onto the floor next to Beca, tickling her sides as Beca pressed her lips firmly together, trying not to laugh, “Let me see!”
“No!” Beca slapped at Chloe’s hands as she held the polaroids over her head, “Get off, that tickles!”
“That’s the point.” Chloe grinned, fingers digging in a little harder as Beca started to laugh furiously, “Show me what you found, and I’ll stop!”
“Alright, alright!” Beca gasped out between her laughs, wiping at her cheeks as Chloe pulled her fingers away, “God, you’re the worst.”
“But you love me.” Chloe beamed, kissing Beca’s cheek, “You married me after all…”
“Hm.” Beca narrowed her eyes for a moment, letting her head rest on Chloe’s shoulder as she handed her the polaroids, “Anyway… I found these in a box in the back of the cupboard.”
“Oh my god…” Chloe beamed as she shuffled through one after the other, “Are these from our senior year road trip?”
“Looks like it.” Beca nodded, “God what a summer that was…”
“I loved that camper van…” Chloe sighed happily, “We were on such a high after prom, all those picnics and the sound of the rain on the roof. You wore that Prom King crown for two whole weeks!”
“Hey!” Beca lifted her head again, pointing accusingly at Chloe, “It was the only time those losers made me feel good about myself for a change, of course I kept wearing it…”
“You were so hot that night…” Chloe grinned, “Oh, see, here you are!”
Chloe held up a photo of a teen Beca in a suit, middle finger extended at the photo taker (undoubtedly Aubrey) as her other arm rested around teen Chloe’s waist.
“Not next to you in that blue dress.” Beca smirked, “You were about the only thing that made high school bearable y’know?”
Chloe ran her fingers through Beca’s hair, smiling softly as Beca rested her head on Chloe’s shoulder again, “I know baby. But you know what? We did have some really great times even if it wasn’t the best part of your life.”
“True.” Beca snorted a little, “Like that time Posen nearly hand an aneurysm when I stole her notebooks the week before our final exams…”
“That was mean.” Chloe giggled, “I thought she was going to combust on the spot!”
“I was helping!” Beca insisted, “She was going to burn herself out, how else was I going to get her to stop?!”
“It was still mean…” Chloe was still giggling as she shook her head a little, “Meaner still when you threatened to set them on fire if she didn’t go and take a nap.”
“I stand by that.” Beca grumbled good-naturedly, “That woman doesn’t know when to stop for her own good. Thank god she met Stacie at med school, she’d have run herself into a mental breakdown if not.”
Chloe squeezed Beca’s waist as she continued to go through the polaroids, grinning from ear to ear as she saw the next one. It was of the two of them, Beca’s face pressed into hers and sticking her tongue out, the camera held in front of them.
“I remember this one…” Chloe mused, “It was that week were it just rained non-stop, and I was feeling glum about it because we’d been stuck in the camper van the whole time.”
“Oh yeah.” Beca took the photo from Chloe, “You were miserable that week…”
“And you spent the whole time trying to cheer me up.” Chloe hummed, kissing the top of Beca’s head, “Taking dorky photos, playing me songs on your guitar… and then you walked in the rain to the diner a mile away, just to get me a steak dinner because it was our anniversary.”
“I can’t believe you remember that…” Beca lifted her head, pressing a soft kiss to Chloe’s lips, “I just wanted you to be happy.”
“You are the sweetest dork.” Chloe grinned, resting her forehead against Beca’s, stroking Beca’s cheek with her thumb, “That was the best summer of my life.”
“Me too.” Beca kissed her again, “I know people said we were crazy for getting married as young as we did but… you’ve been in my life as long as I can remember, I was never going to be any more certain about us then I was then.”
“I think I saw the polaroid from that night…” Chloe turned her attention back to the photos again for a moment, swallowing against the lump of emotion in her throat, “Ah, yep, see?”
The polaroid was of fairy lights strung up between two trees, a picnic rug set up between them laid with food and a bottle of sparkling cider, electric candles lighting the route between their camper van and Beca’s set up. Beca had taken the photo herself, wanting to preserve it forever.
“God it was so hard to get you to leave the camper for me to set that up…” Beca rolled her eyes affectionately, “It took more time convincing you go to the store than it did to get ready!”
“Worth it though.” Chloe giggled, “I never saw it coming… and you were playing Taylor Swift, it couldn’t have been more perfect.”
“You are never going to let me live that down are you?” Beca sighed heavily, “I can be soft for you okay? It’s allowed.”
“Yes it is.” Chloe beamed, cupping Beca’s face in her hands, “And I love it. I love you.”
“Weirdo.” Beca mumbled against Chloe’s lips, “But I love you too.”
“C’mon…” Chloe sighed wistfully as the kiss ended, “We really do have to get this place packed up Becs.”
“But it’s boring…” Beca pouted, “I don’t want to do it anymore…”
Chloe rolled her eyes affectionately, kissing Beca’s forehead as she stood up, “I know. But if you can finish packing this whole room up by dinner time, I’ll buy us pizza.”
“I know you’re treating me like a child…” Beca raised an eyebrow, “But I do like pizza…”
“So pack up the bedroom then.” Chloe grinned mischievously, “But no heavy lifting!”
“Yes mom…” Beca rolled her eyes, huffing a little, “This is why I’m going to be the fun one.”
“You’re going to be the in trouble one if you don’t get packing.” Chloe pointed her finger at Beca as she stepped out of the bedroom, “And I’ll be plenty of fun!” She called over shoulder.
“Yeah when you’re not being a tyrant!” Beca yelled after her, stroking her stomach as she heard Chloe giggling from the next room.
“You’re momma’s a meanie y’know?” Beca muttered, “But she’s also the best thing that ever happened to me… you’re going to be the luckiest little peanut in the world with her as your momma. Now let’s finish packing this wardrobe before she yells at us again.”
