Summary
War is Hell
Ross and Dem become separated by circumstance in the frantic need to leave France under the Vichy government and threat of Nazi occupation. Their love is true but, when it comes down to the wire, they both leave Europe by accepting marriages of convenience. Ross weds Elizabeth Chynoweth, a rich socialite and patron of the arts who brings him to safety in New York City. Dem weds Hugh Armitage, a diplomat who can assure safe passage from France to Mexico. When a dinner hosted by The Riveras at Casa Azul inadvertently brings the two couples together, three years later, the guilt, bitterness and jealousy, feelings of gratitude and disloyalty in each configuration of relationship are the potent emotions that swirl around them all in this difficult reunion.
