Work Text:
Class 1-A was known for a lot of things, mainly they were known for the people in said class.
They were known for Aizawa Shouta, the most strict and reserved teacher in the school who had the highest expectations for his students compared to any other teacher. The homeless looking hero by the name of EraserHead.
They were known for Midoriya Izuku, the smart nerd of the class who was always to kind for his own good. The one who had a power to similar to All Mights that Todoroki was actually able to convince a good part of the class that Izuku was All Mights secret love child.
They were known for Shouto Todoroki, son of Enji Todoroki which was the #1 Pro Hero and one of the only few people with more than one different type of quirk, being both fire and ice. Shouto was also known in the school for ranking an impressive 2nd place at the U.A Sports Festival.
They were known for Bakugou Katsuki, the hothead and the loudmouth of the school who would regularly cuss like a sailor and had really bad anger issues. Also known as the 1st place winner at the U.A Sports Festival.
Class 1-A was also known for Minori Mineta, the pervert and bully of the school who was less than an inch away from being expelled from U.A. Absolutely nobody liked him.
They were known for Fumikage Tokoyami, the intern of the #2 Pro Hero Hawks and holder of one of the most difficult, yet strongest quirks, Dark Shadow. He was also known as the only student in U.A with a fully sentient quirk and for ranking 3rd place at the U.A Sports Festival.
At first glance most people would think of Tokoyami as just a kid with some bird attributes and leave it at that, but they would be very, very wrong.
Tokoyami was one of the most reserved people in class 1-A, some would say he’s just as reserved as Aizawa himself. Tokoyami never talked about his past, and never mention where he lived or his parents so there was very little that the students in Class 1-A actually knew about him.
There was so much in his life that nobody knew about. So, so much that was burned in Tokoyami’s mind that he could never forget.
Nobody knew that his biological father left him at the age of 5 because he could no longer be in the presence of someone with such a villainous quirk, since Tokoyami was born with Dark Shadow his farther after 5 years he was finally fed up with it and left in the middle of the night, never to be seen again.
Nobody knew that at age 11 his mother and younger sister were both murdered at a bird mutant only concert where his mom was the main singer.
Nobody knew that when Tokoyami was 13 he ran away and hid for weeks after his foster parents tried to force him to take a quirk destroying pill, only to be dragged back and put into a different foster home. This one no better than the last, they never were.
Nobody knew that most of his foster parents only ever cared about the money they got once a month for keeping him in their care and they did very little aside from ignore him.
Nobody knew about the small scars he had all along his body he got from his current foster family, or how both Dark Shadow and himself had almost as much medical knowledge as a field medic because of how often they had to stop him from bleeding out and clean his wounds so they didn’t get infected.
Nobody knew about the abuse.
Nobody knew how many times he was forced to hide in his room and pretend to be sleeping to avoid his drunk guardians whenever they came back from a party.
Nobody knew that the reason Tokoyami was so dark and brooding was because sadness was one of the only emotions that would keep Dark Shadow from getting too strong, so the chances of Dark Shadow attacking his guardians (accidentally or not) was low.
Nobody knew that at age 14 Dark Shadow became too scared to come out whenever Fumi was at his foster parents house because the quirk wouldn't dare show his face in front of Fumi’s foster parents after what had happened last time, based on the scar on Tokoyami’s neck the quirk knew better than to risk getting his sibling into more trouble.
Nobody knew that the reason Tokoyami was such a good cook was because if he didn’t make dinner for his family every night he wasn’t allowed to eat at all and would be locked in his room until morning.
Nobody knew why Tokoyami ate so little because of the fact that he had been malnourished for so long his stomach had shrunk so now he was psychically unable to eat large portions of food.
Nobody knew that Tokoyami and Dark Shadow viewed each other as siblings.
Nobody knew how they were called a villains their entire childhood because of their looks.
Nobody knew about how he was barley able to have Dark Shadow out in public because the overprotective quirk would go haywire and attack anyone too close to Tokoyami for his liking.
Nobody knew know that at the age of 11 Dark Shadow had killed a man in order to protect Tokoyami.
Nobody knew how many times someone tried to kidnap Tokoyami to sell him on the black market because of his mutation and quirk.
Nobody knew about the hellhole Tokoyami and Dark Shadow lived in before moving into the dorms.
Nobody knew how bad Tokoyami and Dark Shadow wanted a regular, loving family that most kids had and to get back the broken years of his childhood.
Nobody knew what they had been through.
The very little they did know about Tokoyami was that the bird mutant and his quirk both loved apples.
They knew that Tokoyami was unable too see glass unless it was stained but Dark Shadow could, which often resulted in Dark Shadow saving his sibling from many embarrassing moments of running into glass doors or large windows that Tokoyami was very thankful for.
They did know he liked to read about dark stuff and would write short stories and poems in his notebook.
They knew that Tokoyami was an amazing cook and absolutely talented when it came to drawing.
They knew that Tokoyami loved music and was a talented singer, though that may have just been because of his bird traits.
They knew Tokoyami could play lots of instruments like the classical guitar, electric guitar, violin, piano, ukulele and that Dark Shadow could play the drums very well.
They knew that Tokoyami and Dark Shadow both wrote songs and they would that often sing together when they were alone.
They knew that Tokoyami hated being touched without knowing and would elbow you hard if you tried to hug him without his permission. Dark Shadow would often try to bite or claw at anyone who touched Tokoyami without permission.
They also knew that Tokoyami and Hawks were like two peas in a pod, ever since they were introduced to each other it was clear that Tokoyami looked up to Hawks like he did with Aizawa and it was very clear that Hawks saw Tokoyami as one of his own.
A few months after Tokoyami became Hawks intern the class had started to notice small changes in their classmates behaviour.
One of the 5 main things that they all noticed was that Tokoyami had a very short attention span, usually he would ask the other students for their notes because he had blanked out or just outright wasn’t able to keep his attention on his work. Though that only happened in Math class so he did extra studying to try and keep up with the rest of his classmates.
The second main thing that Class 1-A realized about Tokoyami was that both him and Dark Shadow fidgeted with just about everything they could get their hands on, nobody was sure if it was a bird thing or perhaps they both had ADHD, or if it was just an old habit that their friends had.
Mina had given Tokoyami a few silver fidget rings that she owns because she had the same problem, Tokoyami excepted the gifts graciously and the next day the class realized that he was now wearing one of the 3 rings on the fourth finger of his left hand. He only ever wore one of the rings but he did fidget with it a lot so mission successful in Mina’s opinion.
The third main difference that Class 1-A picked up on about their bird classmate was that both Tokoyami and Dark Shadow loved shiny things, they had been seen on multiple occasions picking up small things trinkets off the ground like paper clips or shiny pebbles and either holding onto them or deciding to put their “treasure” into Tokoyami’s pant pocket under his black cloak.
The fourth things that Tokoyami’s classmates noticed in his change in behaviour was that if you looked close enough and actually got to know the boy, you would know that he wore his emotion on his sleeves.
Tokoyami’s feathers would puff up when he was embarrassed or flustered, the girls in the class decided that it was his version of blushing. He would often look at the space beside your head and avoid eye contact when either anxious, lying or avoiding telling the truth, his whole body would bristle when he felt uneasy or unsafe which would than lead to Dark Shadow coming out of hiding and Tokoyami’s feathers would always get fluffed up and he would slightly rock back and forth on his feet when he was happy or excited.
The last last main thing that the students in Class 1-A noticed was how Tokoyami was starting to act more bird like instead of holding in his instincts, which was not healthy.
Being a mutant and holding back your animal traits was a huge problem, it could lead to bad mental health, physical health, and insecurities. Ignoring your instincts could get you seriously injured if you didn’t take care of yourself properly. Like preening your feathers for a bird mutant or making sure to rest out in the sun for a few hours if you were a type of serpent mutant and were cold blooded.
Over the last few months Tokoyami would often chirp or trill, but he only ever did that at the Dorms, he never did it with anyone aside from his classmates and mentors. Most of the class could remember how ashamed Tokoyami was at first when he chirped in front of them but everyone in the class explained how it was 100% okay and that none of them minded.
It made them really upset of how ashamed Tokoyami was of his bird like qualities.
But by now his classmates were more then used to him chirping and unbeknown to him all of the girls found it absolutely adorable, not like they would ever tell him that though. They learned that Tokoyami’s chirps meant different things.
One simple chirp was usually a greeting or a silent agreement while two or more chirps was a sign of confusion and that he didn’t understand something. But then again every chirp was something different based on the pitch of it, Tokoyami would often trill or coo when Hawks was nearby or when he was happy and Tokoyami would make the sound of a kitten purring when he was relaxed enough. Clicking was a warning that if you didn’t back off he would have Dark Shadow attack and Tokoyami would warble when he was uneasy and everyone had learned by Hawks actions a long time ago when Tokoyami warbled it was a sign of calling for help.
The class had found out only weeks ago that Tokoyami chirped when he laughed, after the incident Jiro asked him about it because nobody else have the balls too and they had all found out that Dark Shadow also chirped when he laughed. It was something out of their control which was why they tried to avoid laughing out loud because they were still getting used to chirping after holding it in for so long.
Dark Shadow acted more like a bird as well but he mostly acted like an overprotective, annoying sibling if anything. He was often found practically glued to Tokoyami’s side as the two of them quietly talked in a language only Koda and Hawks knew.
Hawks acted like a mother hen over both Tokoyami and Dark Shadow, not that either of them minded anyways. It was nice having someone care for you other than each other and their classmates, what made it different was that Hawks cared for them the same way Aizawa did.
Like a parent.
Tokoyami and Dark Shadow didn’t have good parents ever since Tokoyami was put into foster care because he was a minor had no other family to take him in. His foster parent barley payed any attention to him and even when he was noticed by his foster parent it was never good attention.
It always ended with Tokoyami getting yelled at and being called names and slurs as he inwardly tried to hold Dark Shadow off from tearing the guy to shreds. It was clear that his foster parent just used him for the money that was sent for him every month by the government.
Because Tokoyami had no one other than Dark Shadow to actually watch over him after his parents died and he was thrown into foster care, he was still learning things that he should’ve learned a long time ago. For instance, he didn’t know how to properly preen himself until early this year when Hawks commented on the unhealthy look of his feathers.
Apparently over the years both Tokoyami and Dark Shadow weren’t doing as good as they thought they were when it came to the whole, “Learning on your own”
Now don’t get him wrong, Tokoyami acted much more human than he did bird but ever so slowly, he was getting more and more comfortable letting out some of his bird traits around his classmates. Which was not only a great sign of trust but it was also very good for Tokoyami’s health.
Despite how Class 1-A acted in public they were like an oversized family at the dorms. Helping each other with work, cooking, cleaning, sharing chores, doing family movie nights and game nights, having a listening ear when someone else needed to vent, providing comfort to one another. All of these things everyone in Class 1-A did with each other because they all viewed each other as family. (Except for Mineta)
It took Tokoyami and Dark Shadow the longest to get used to the friendliness and care that his classmates were giving them but with the help of Hawks and Aizawa eventually the class had earned their trust. And no one was going to betray that small amount of trust Tokoyami and Dark Shadow had for them.
No one except for Mineta.
Now Mineta was an asshole, everybody knew that. He was always so close to being kicked out of U.A because of his actions but somehow he had managed to worm his way into staying.
Aizawa loved his students, really he did and he would risk his lives for them any day, but Mineta was the only exception. He was the one who had put Mineta on his last strike to being kicked out, everyone wanted him to be gone anyways and all the kid did was make his other students uncomfortable and cause trouble.
The girls of Class 1-A were hanging out in the dorms, near the common room. Hawks dropped by because Tokoyami had invited Hawks over to have dinner since it was his turn to cook tonight.
Aizawa was sleeping on the couch, his hair was in an impressively done French braid and his head rested on the arm rest while his legs were taking up all of the space on the couch, nobody dared to wake him, fearing of what the consequences would be if they did.
Jiro, Mina, and Uraraka were all siting in front of the couch playing Would you Rather, Tsuyu, Momo and Hagakure were with them though they weren’t playing, much to fascinated on what was on the TV. Hawks and Tokoyami were both in sitting armchairs talking to one another, keeping their voice quiet to try and not wake up Aizawa.
Somehow Kirishima had managed to talk most of the boys to go out shopping, something about “Brotherly Bonding”. All of the boys agreed except Aizawa, Mineta and Tokoyami.
Aizawa declined because he stated he was too tired for social interaction which everyone respected, Tokoyami had the same reason, though it was mainly because Dark Shadow seemed to be in a grumpy mood so bringing them out in public wouldn’t be the best idea. Mineta stayed because he stated that he had no money and the rest of the boys made it clear that none of them would pay for his stuff.
He also stayed behind because he found out that the rest of the girls were staying as well.
For some reason Mineta hadn’t left his room since the boys left, which honestly wasn’t that long ago- probably 30 minutes at most. Hawks had decided to stop by only 5 minutes after the guys left. Tokoyami watched as Hawks stretched and did an over-exaggerated yawn, his back cracking when he stood up from sitting in the chair for too long.
“Which way is the bathroom again?” Hawks ask Tokoyami who motioned down the hall.
“The door at the end of the hallway on the right side.” Tokoyami deadpanned, remembering that he had already giving Hawks the tour around their dorms not even 20 minutes ago.
Hawks gave him one of his flashing grins that he would use whenever someone took a picture of him and did finger guns towards Tokoyami. “Thanks chick, you’re a real life savour.” Hawks said before quickly making his way towards the bathroom. Tokoyami didn’t show any signs of care for the nickname aside from his feathers puffing up slightly.
“Hey Tokoyami, no rush or anything but when will dinner be ready? Do we have to call back the boys anytime soon?” Mina asked, sending Tokoyami a disappointed look, obviously not wanting the boys of the class to come back anytime soon.
Tokoyami almost forgot about the chicken he had put in the oven, he quickly got up to check on the food and he called back out to her.
“I would guess another 20 minutes but I can go check, I also don’t see why we have to invite the rest of the males on the class. I’m sure they can survive if they eat their food cold or they could simply use the microwave to reheat it.” Tokoyami said, getting close up to the oven and looking at the timer.
“Correction, 28 more minutes until our appetite will be pleased but it will still need time to cool down so I would assume anywhere in between 30 to 40 minutes.” Tokoyami corrected himself, Mina said her thanks and went back to playing.
At that moment he heard the door down at the other end of the room open, looking over his shoulder to see who it was he noticed that it was Mineta.
He was dressed in a full black suit, a strong wave of Lavender filled the area as Mineta walked into the room with confidence radiating off of him. He looked around and his smile faltered when he couldn’t see any of the girls.
“Hey Tokoyami, where the lady’s at?” Mineta asked, scanning around the room. Tokoyami felt Dark Shadow grumble inside him from the strong smell of lavender.
Truthfully because of where Mineta walked into the room it was impossible to see the girls at his angle, they were all sitting behind the couch and because of Mineta’s height he wasn’t able to see them.
Tokoyami knew that all of the girls heard Mineta, the fact that they were all silent and hadn’t said anything was a sign that they didn’t want the class pervert to know they were in the room. Tokoyami waited a moment to think of a reasonable response before answering Mineta’s question.
“They are no longer on the premises, they decided to go do a girls night out since the boys decided to do have own bonding time. The only ones here are Aizawa, Dark Shadow and I.”
Tokoyami completely forgot about Hawks also being here, the lie rolled off his tongue so easily it was a bit frightening. The absolutely betrayed look Mineta sent him was worth it though.
“What?! They’re gone!? Dude I spent over half an hour getting myself all spiced up for the ladies why didn’t you say anything?!” Mineta cried, Tokoyami shrugged and grabbed an apple from the food bowl to snack on.
“How was I supposed to know you wanted to see them? I suspected you were in your room playing video games.” He said, trying to cut the conversation short. He took a bite out of the apple in his hand as he checked the time. It was 4:52 and the rest of the class said they would be back at around 5:30.
“Well come on man spill the beans! Where are they? A party? A restaurant? A beach?” Mineta asked, clearly not understanding that Tokoyami didn’t want to have a conversation with him.
Dark Shadow formed just above Tokoyami’s shoulder, reaching for the apple in his hand and eating the whole thing in one bite. Mineta jumped a bit at the newcomer but scoffed and crossed his arms once he realized that he wasn’t in any danger.
Yet.
“Stop questioning Fumi! He obviously doesn’t want to answer!” Dark Shadow hissed, he slightly retreated at the stern glare Tokoyami gave them. “God your insufferable.” Dark Shadow muttered, just loud enough for Mineta to hear.
“So you do know where they are!” Mineta accused, Tokoyami kept a cool and calm expression, trying to ignore Dark Shadow’s urge to throw Mineta across the room.
Tokoyami saw Uraraka’s head pop over the couch to look at him, Mineta’s back was facing away from the couch so he wasn’t able to see the girl. Uraraka raised an eyebrow in a silent question to which Tokoyami gave a subtle shake of the head.
“As I said before, they’re not here and have decided to have their own girls night. The last time I checked you were very much still in the Male category.” Tokoyami said, he caught a brief glance at Uraraka’s thankful smile before she ducked her head again. With his slightly enhanced bird hearing he could tell the girls were whispering to each other.
“Useless bird.” Mineta mumbled, climbing up onto the counter and opening one of the snack drawers, he grabbed a bag of cracker and greedily started eating them, not caring at all for the mess he was making.
“The chicken should be done cooking in an hour so please do not fill yourself up too much.” Tokoyami said, another lie rolling off his tongue as easily as it would be to blink.
The reason he said dinner would be ready in an hour is because it was clear the girls wanted nothing to do with him, so the girls could eat first and then when the rest of the boys in Class 1-A got back to the dorms they could all eat. Neither Tokoyami or Dark Shadow cared if Mineta’s food was cold.
“Heh, why? You don’t want me to finish all of the snacks? It’s not like it actually matters, Aizawa or some other lame teacher will just buy more.” Mineta said, stuffing another cracker in his mouth and getting the crumbs everywhere on the floor.
Tokoyami frowned and he could practically feel Dark Shadows’s and the rest of the girls frowns even though he is unable to see them. The way Mineta talked about their teacher made anger bubble in his stomach.
“You would be wise and not talk about our teacher or any teacher like that if you want to pass UA and become a hero.” Tokoyami snapped, Mineta raised an eyebrow at him and shrugged.
“It’s not like I’m saying something that’s not true.” Mineta says casually, clearly having no respect for Aizawa or any of his other teachers. Tokoyami’s eye twitched when he shoved more crackers into his mouth, most of them missing and crumbling onto the floor that Lida had swept earlier today.
“Can you stop making such a mess? It’s not like you’re going to be the one cleaning it up.” Tokoyami said coldly, Mineta jumped slightly and looked down at the thousands of cracker crumbs below him.
“Hey what’s with the snappy attitude? You made just cause I’m eating your crackers?” Mineta asked causing Tokoyami to stop and think for a moment.
Yes, he could admit he was acting a little more snappy than usual but that just happened to anyone in Mineta’s presence. Also, he didn’t understand why Mineta called the cracker his even though they only things that belonged to him were in his room.
“Here, Polly want a cracker?” Mineta said with a large smile, he mimicked a chirping noise and held out a half eaten cracker for Tokoyami to grab with his beak.
Tokoyami froze, while he knew Mineta was a bad person, very few people would ever actually tease someone because they were mutant. It was very highly frowned upon just about everywhere and he doubted any of the League of Villains would even do it. In the corner of his eye he saw all of the girls heads pop up from behind the couch, a raged and shocked expression on their faces meaning that they all heard the what Mineta had said.
“If that comment was supposed to be funny I highly recommend you don’t ever look into becoming a comedian in the future.” Tokoyami deadpanned, his eyes flickering to the girls and back to Mineta.
Honestly the only thing he feared was either the girls watching the interaction or Dark Shadow snapping and throwing Mineta out the nearest window, while that would be enjoyable it wouldn’t be very heroic.
“Come on dude learn to take a joke, you’re probably used to people talking about the way you look.” Mineta said, peeking into the oven where the chicken inside was just barley in his sight. He didn’t realize the danger he was in.
‘I am going to punt him into the fucking sun!’ Dark Shadow snarled inside Tokoyami’s mind, Tokoyami focused on keeping Dark Shadow calm, barley noticing how the girls were now standing up and looked ready to beat Mineta to a pulp.
“Hey I’ve been meaning to ask- why are you eating chicken? Isn’t that like- catabolism or something?” Mineta asked, Tokoyami felt a frown make its way onto his beak.
“Of course not, why would you think such a foolish thing?” He said, it wasn’t meant to come out as a question but it was so Mineta answered anyways.
“Cause you’re a bird and you eat chicken? Duh, it’s not like it’s that hard to notice with the feathers and all. Your oversized bird head and beak give it away, not to mention your freaky claws.” Mineta stated, greedily finishing off the bag of crackers before just leaving it on the counter for someone else to clean up.
Tokoyami looked down at his talons, unlike most mutants he could retract some of his features and his talons were one of them. He quickly retracted them so they were no longer visible and his nails looked normal.
“Plus you act more like a bird than you do human! It’s so weird and it freaks everyone out! They just don’t want to say anything because they know it would hurt your feelings, I mean come on. You chirp, squawk, peck, fly, pick up shiny things, sit on ledges whenever you can. It’s fucking weird and creeps people out, if you ever did become a hero nobody would trust you.” Mineta scoffed, jumping and putting his dirty feet on the counter to get himself more food.
“Plus you can’t even control your quirk, remember training camp? If anything you’re probably gonna grow up to be a villain instead of a hero. They should just throw you in one of those quirk restraining hospitals for everyone’s safety.”
The girls in the room all gasped loudly drawing Mineta’s attention to them, he quickly pushed down all of the wrinkles on his suit and straightened his back to look more presentable, Tokoyami could see him drooling and Dark Shadow could practically imagine the hearts in his eyes.
“Hey ladies! Which one of you is going to be the lucky one and get some of this!” He motioned to his body. “Now, none of you have to fight, there is plenty of me to go around.” Mineta said, hopping off the counter and walking towards the girls who all had disgust written all over their facial features.
‘LET ME AT HIM FUMI! I’LL TEAR HIS FUCKING HEAD RIGHT OFF HIS TINY BODY!’ Dark Shadow roared in their shared headspace, the only thing keeping him at bay the Tokoyami’s urge of not wanting to fight. He dismissed Dark Shadow and started to try and calm his emotions, what Mineta had said was truly hurtful Tokoyami knew that he couldn’t let a few simple words get to him.
He tried to block out some past memories that’s started to make themselves known once again after all these years.
“Who the hell do you think you are?!” Momo yelled, jumping- actually jumping over the couch Aizawa was still sleeping on and marching over to Mineta who had a confused look on his face.
“Yeah! Who are you to talk about Tokoyami that way!?” Mina yelled, walking over to Tokoyami and giving him a hug, he stiffened from the contact but forced his body to relax. Mineta opened his mouth to say something but was cut off.
“You better keep your mouth shut Mineta before I do something very unheroic.” Jiro scowled, murder was in her eyes and the only thing holding her back was Hagakure who had her hand rested on her arm.
“Why are you getting all made at me?! Mutants are freaks! Especially animal based ones like him!” Mineta motioned towards Tokoyami. “I don’t know why you’re all going soft on him, he’ll never be a real hero and everyone here knows it! He would just scare people away with his freaky looks and scary quirk, don’t forget the way he dresses mixed with his emo attitude, his voice and the way he talks doesn’t help him either.”
Before anyone could say anything he quickly continued. “Actually think about it, he has no control over his quirk and he’s a danger to everyone! Don’t try to deny it, plus he a animal mutant so that doesn’t help his public image.” Mineta said the word mutant with so much disgust it was infuriating. Tsuyu looked down at her body before hiding behind Momo, suddenly feeling very self conscious.
A warble escaped Tokoyami’s throat before he could stop it as he watched the girls in his class shout at Mineta, too much was happening at once.
He was trying to keep Dark Shadow from killing Mineta, the girls were all yelling at Mineta, Aizawa looked like he was starting to wake up from all the yelling, past memories were started to resurface, Mineta was now pinned against the wall with red feathers-
Wait what?
Tokoyami blinked and watched as Mineta screamed in fear when he was suddenly pinned down and unable to move, all the girls stopped yelling and look at Mineta in shock before turning towards Hawks who was stalking down the hallway with a look of murder on his face promised to anyone who got in his way.
“Who the FUCK are you to talk to Tokoyami like that?!” Hawks screeched, a serious of frantic clicking sounds escaped his throat as he walked behind Tokoyami wrapped his wings and arms protectively around his intern. Glaring daggers at Mineta who looked ready to piss himself.
“I-I I was joking! I-it was just a j-joke! Right Fumikage?” Mineta asked, his voice was the definition of panicked and scared. The girls all watched in awe and satisfaction as Hawks finally started to put Mineta in his place.
Dark Shadow cooed affectionately when Hawks wings wrapped around both him and Tokoyami, he popped his head out of Tokoyami’s shoulder and snarled at the purple grape.
“Those were no jokes! They were personal insults against people with animal mutations! You’re lucky Tokoyami didn’t want to fight and was holding me back or else I would have-!”
“You would have what?” Dark Shadow’s sentence was cut off by Aizawa who looked outright pissed at being woken up, probably from Mineta’s screaming. Aizawa sat up straighter, looking at the scene in front of him and raised an eyebrow.
“I WOULD HAVE THROWN HIM SO HARD INTO THE GROUND HE WOULD HAVE HIT THE EARTHS CORE!!” Dark Shadow yelled in rage, he didn’t grow in fear of the hero using his eraser quick on him. They weren’t even sure if it would actually work on Dark Shadow because Aizawa had never tried but Dark Shadow didn’t want to find out.
“Yo Eraser, has your student always been a douche or is this a recent thing?” Hawks asked lightly, keeping his chin on top of Tokoyami’s head as he stared down at Mineta. Tokoyami’s face didn’t show any emotion aside from boredom but Hawks could tell his intern was relieved.
“No, he’s just always been that way…” Hagakure mumbled from beside Mina, quickly looking in between Aizawa and Hawks to see what would happen.
“What did he do this time?” Aizawa asked sternly, it was clear something was wrong and needed to be addressed. He stood up and walked towards the small group.
“It was nothing of importance-“ Tokoyami’s sentence died in his throat when Hawks, Dark Shadow and all the other female students in the room sent him looks that practically screamed “Shut up.” Hell, he couldn’t even see Hagakire and he could tell she was glaring at him.
“Your student made some interesting comments towards Tokoyami that I noticed were more than a little harmful, if I could guess I would say that your student here is an anti-Mutant.” Hawks said, each word was calm and collective but inside he was seething with rage- someone had hurt both of his chicks feelings- his only flock members. His instincts were screaming at him to comfort Tokoyami and Dark Shadow by chirping or preening his chicks ruffled feathers but he didn’t want to embarrass his chick in front of his friends.
But someone had hurt his chicks, and that wouldn’t go unpunished.
His chicks, his flock, they were under his protection, anyone who messed with them messed with him.
“Mineta. What. Did. You. Say.” Aizawa gritted through his teeth once he was standing over the cowering student. Mineta was no longer being held down by Hawks feathers but the glare Aizawa was giving him must have took 10 years off his life.
“I-I only said the truth! I-i don’t know w-why everyone’s so pissed off!” Mineta stuttered out after a few long moments, his throat finally opening up and letting him get through a sentence.
Based on the look everyone in the room gave him, that was the wrong thing to say.
“Fine, since you won’t tell me I guess someone else will have too.” Aizawa said, he turned towards the rest of the girls who all had a angered expression on their face.
Mina quickly spoke first, glancing around nervously as she fidgeted with the sleeves of her shirt. “He-he said that Mutants were freaks, especially animal based ones like Fumikage because of his appearance…”
Tsuyu nodded her head. “Yeah *ribbit* he also started taunting Tokoyami and Dark Shadow by waving a cracker in their face and saying “Polly want a cracker?” She croaked, some of her own insecurities starting to show as he kept her head low and avoided eye contact with everyone.
“Not to mention how he started bashing Fumikage for his bird traits like sitting on ledges and chirping which is totally normal for all bird mutants to do.” Hagakure added, by now Mineta had gone pale. Suddenly realizing his mistakes.
“He also started criticizing Fumikage about the Training Camp incident and his control over Dark Shadow.” Momo said, crossing her arms as she scowled at Mineta.
“He can’t control me you dumb fuck! What I do is my choice, not Fumi’s!” Dark Shadow cawed, Tokoyami could feel his quirks agitation through their bond and he started petting Dark Shadows head to try and calm his sibling down.
“He also said that Fumikage had a villain quirk and that he was going too grow up to be a villain instead of a hero.” Said Uraraka sadly, there was a large frown on her face as she looked between Aizawa and Mineta. Curious to what her teacher would do.
“Mineta also said how scary Fumikage’s talons were and that he would just scare people off and nobody would trust him when he becomes a hero because he’s an animal mutant.” Jiro said, she didn’t look nearly a pissed as Hawks but anyone with eyes could tell she wanted to kick Mineta in the balls. Hard.
“Don’t forget about the nasty comments he made about Fumi’s clothing, voice, and attitude!” Dark Shadow added in, he growled at Mineta when the boy opened his mouth to defend himself but stopped when Hawks started patting his head reassuringly.
“*Ribbit* Mineta also said that Tokoyami should be locked in one of those quirk restraining hospitals because he’s a danger to everyone around him.” Tsuyu mumbled, rubbing her arm as she did her best to glare at Mineta but not make it obvious.
Aizawa started getting more pissed by the second, the fact that one of his students were mutant haters and quirk discriminators made his stomach flip and his rage filled eyes met Mineta’s petrified ones.
“Thank you for telling me, I will need all of your statements once again later today so I can write them down. Mineta, pack up your things. Now.” Aizawa said, his voice deathly serious as he stared down at the cowering boy who looked close to tears.
A loud, chittering sound escaped Hawks throat before he could stop it gaining everyone’s attention. He tightened his hold on Tokoyami once again and glared at Mineta as the boy ran down the hallway towards his room. Hawks kept Tokoyami pressed up against him and kept his chin on his interns head, both of his arms and wings were still strongly wrapped around the younger bird mutant. Flexing out his talons and puffing out each feather on his wings to make them look much bigger than they really were.
“If that kid isn’t expelled from UA, I’ll figure out a way to do it myself.” Hawks warned, his pupils were now slits as he stopping looking at the hallway Mineta had gone through and stared at Aizawa. Both Tokoyami and Dark Shadow didn’t know what to do. It didn’t appear that Hawks had his raptor grip on Tokoyami but there was always a chance of that happening.
“I hate him.” Dark Shadow said, making no move to get out of Hawks hold. Aizawa raised an eyebrow at the statement and the rest of the girls giggled when Tokoyami’s feathers puffed up.
“Don’t we all…” Jiro scoffed, uncrossing her arms and kicking the floor tiles. Her and all the other girls sent each other worried looks before they all seemed to make a silent agreement and looked at Aizawa.
“Mr Aizawa? Mineta will be getting kicked out for this, right?” Mina asked hopefully, she didn’t like to feel unsafe in her own room changing because of her constantly horny classmate that would never leave her or any of the other girls alone.
Aizawa looked at everyone’s hopeful expressions, not just the girls but even Tokoyami, Dark Shadow and Hawks. It was clear that none of them wanted Mineta in the dorms, and he already knew that none of the boys liked him either.
Aizawa took a deep breath and gave all of them a warm smile, Aizawa had started smiling around them more often but it was still a rare sight to see, especially for Hawks who almost instantly lost his grip on Tokoyami from shock.
“Don’t worry, this was the last straw. I meant it when I said that he would be kicked out for this kind of behaviour and I never go back on my word. I’ll be taking him to UA to talk to Nezu tomorrow morning after I get all of your statements.” Aizawa said, his smile growing ever so slightly at the joy of everyone’s faces.
“Um… the food will be ready in 20 minutes…” Tokoyami mumbled after a few seconds of silence, he was avoiding eye contact with everyone which made most of them frown and look at him in worry.
“Are you alright Tokoyami?” Aizawa asked as he walked up to his student and crouched down so he was more at eye level, Hawks loosened his grip a bit more and moved his head so he could try and see his interns facial expression. When Tokoyami didn’t say anything after a moment Dark Shadow decided to answer for him.
“He thinks that what grape boy said was true and now he’s doubting his capability to become a hero.” The shadow quirk sadly said, earning him a look of pure and utter betrayal from Tokoyami as he quickly hushed his quirk.
“No- no. That’s not the case it’s just- I just am having trouble understanding why my classmate made those comments…” Tokoyami said, the “and if they were true” was left out of the sentence but everyone heard it.
“He’s a quirk discriminator.” Hawks growled, mostly letting go of Tokoyami but keeping his hand on the others arm.
“As well as an anti-mutant *ribbit*” Tsuyu croaked, Momo and Hagakure nodded their heads in agreement.
“And a pervert.” Mina whined, unconsciously folding her arms to cover her chest.
“A genuine asshole.” Jiro said with a scowl, putting her arm on Momo’s shoulder. Tokoyami looked up at all of them and gave them a small smile, it may have had the girls fooled but Aizawa could tell it was fake.
“Stop thinking like that Fumi!” Dark Shadow whined, he was shaking and looked close to tears which instantly set Hawks instincts to top notch because he pulled the shadow quirk closer and started scratching his head and preening him.
“But- what if our classmate is right?” Tokoyami asked, looking in between Dark Shadow and Aizawa as he spoke. “My- I can’t control Dark Shadow. He’s his own sentient being who thinks his own thought and had his own feelings…” Tokoyami’s sentence drifted off but it was clear he wanted to say more.
Aizawa inwardly sighed, he knew this conversation would happen eventually but he didn’t think it would be this soon and he definitely didn’t think that Hawks would be here when it happened. He turned his head towards the girls and motioned for them to leave, giving them a reassuring smile when they looked uncertain and hesitant.
After the girls left Aizawa did a quick double check to make sure that Mineta was no longer in sights, when he didn’t see anyone he sighed and slightly waved his hand to get Tokoyami’s attention. He was still crouched down in front of his student and his legs were getting a bit sore but he ignored it.
“It’s- it’s not that I’m worried I’ll become a villain. I-I know I won’t. I promise, but- what if what Mineta said about the public was true? Is my appearance really that… that bad to the point of not being able to trust?” Tokoyami asked softly, surprising himself on how steady his voice came out despite his stuttering. His sad emotions mixed with Dark Shadows was beginning to be too much to handle, they were feeding off each others sadness and it was only increasing by the second.
“We’re not really that bad… are we?” Dark Shadow whimpered, speaking both for his brother and himself. He removed himself from Hawks’s hold and buried his head into Tokoyami’s neck, letting out a quiet coo when Tokoyami breath hitched, not audible to human ears but Hawks heard it.
“Fumikage. Dark Shadow. Absolutely not. Neither of you are bad. If the public can’t see that then fuck them, when people doubt your ability to do something you work harder to see the look on their faces when you finally achieve your goal.” Hawks said with more seriousness than Aizawa had ever heard from the young hero.
Aizawa nodded his head, gaining Tokoyami’s attention. His heart broke when he looked into the kids eyes, it was clear that he was holding off tears. Dark Shadow looked no better.
“Hawks is right Tokoyami, your quirk and your looks don’t determine what kind of person you’re going to be. You and Dark Shadow have a lot of potential, don’t throw that away because of what other people think.” Aizawa said, his voice was quieter then Hawks but and he slightly opened his arms as a silent invitation when he watched Tokoyami’s shoulders start to shake from holding back sobs.
Tokoyami quickly stepped forward and accepted the hug, hiding his head in the gape of his teachers neck. He felt humiliated and exposed and weak, he was supposed to train and become a strong hero to help people and here he was crying in front of both of the people he looked up too most.
Dark Shadow let out a loud wail and joined the hug, which Aizawa had no problem with and just readjusted his grip of Tokoyami so that he could properly hug both kids.
Tokoyami rarely ever cried but when he did it was almost completely silent, the only time he ever really cried out loud was when his mother and sister died.
Dark Shadow was loud when he cried, mainly because of the fact that he and Tokoyami shared their emotions so whatever Tokoyami felt instantly reflected onto him as well and the quirk wasn’t nearly as good as concealing it’s emotions.
Hawks resisted the urge to coo at Tokoyami and Dark Shadow, he wasn’t going to leave them, no way in hell but he didn’t know how to feel with Aizawa hold his chicks- oh he wanted so, so baldy to wrapped them up in his arms and wings to comfort them and shield them from the world.
Aizawa ignored the pain in his knees as he rubbed Tokoyami’s back, he had dealt with many of his students crying but Tokoyami was never one of them. The silent sobs of one of his youngest students racking his body as Dark Shadow made itself as small as possible and stayed wrapped around them.
Aizawa vaguely wondered if Jiro was listening, while he trusted his students very much curiosity was always a thing, and curiosity was one of them strongest emotions someone could feel.
Tokoyami let out a shuttering breath, the last time he was hugged by someone aside from Dark Shadow was 4 years ago the day his mom passed away, he remembered the police officer, her name was Kylie and he could remember her holding onto him trying to calm in down for at least an hour. She didn’t even bat an eye when Dark Shadow clawed at her arm in sorrow drawing blood, her quirk was shapeshifting so she was quick to hide the injury but Tokoyami knew it was there and that he most likely scarred the women’s arm.
Hawks could no longer hold back his instincts because he stepped forward and got on his knees, using his wings to cover Tokoyami and Dark Shadow from the world but leaving just enough room so that if Aizawa wanted too, he could pull away with no trouble.
Aizawa looked at Hawks and raised an eyebrow as he kept rubbing Tokoyami’s back as his students breath hitched and Dark Shadow let out a noise that sounded like a baby bird who’s hurt itself. Aizawa studied Hawks face, unsure of what he was looking for but what he saw definitely wasn’t what he was expecting.
Hawks kept his expression carefully blank and void of any emotion, he could feel Aizawa’s gaze lock onto him but he ignored it as if it was just the wind. Right now the only thing that mattered to him was his chicks, the fact that such words from his classmates had put Tokoyami and Dark Shadow in this position made him sick.
They all stayed like that for a while, Aizawa hugging Tokoyami and rubbing his back, Dark Shadow and Tokoyami’s necks hidden in the gap of his, and Hawks with his wings wrapped around all of them as he let out some comforting bird noises that were too high for human ears to hear.
Eventually Tokoyami’s breathing started to even out and his tears started to slow down, Dark Shadow was still quivering and hiding under Hawks wings from the kitchen light. All of them snapped out of their daze when the ovens halfway timer started going off, Hawks pulled Tokoyami into his own arms and help his intern stand up as Aizawa quickly and silently moved to turn the timer off before returning to Tokoyami.
“Tokoyami” Aizawa said and Hawks went stiff when the older hero called out to his intern but when he looked at the man all that was written on his features was sympathy and anger, though it was clear that the anger was not directed towards the kid.
Aizawa sighed when Tokoyami didn’t look up, Dark Shadow started slowly hovering around his brother but the quirk looked at Aizawa when he said Tokoyami’s name as if it had been his own.
“Tokoyami.” Aizawa said again and this time Tokoyami lifted his head and looked at his teacher, he didn’t even want to know how hideous he looked with the tears in his eyes getting his feathers all wet.
Aizawa sighed and looked Tokoyami in the eye, though his gaze shifted between his student and his students quirk every few seconds. “What happened at the Training Camp wasn’t your fault, you may have lost control but you were scared and stressed, you acted to protect your classmates. Everyone understands that and nobody judges you.”
“I could have killed someone.” Tokoyami shot back, Dark Shadow may have been his sibling but it was also his quirk so therefore Dark Shadow was under his responsibility.
Aizawa nodded and stood up, putting a hand on Tokoyami’s shoulder when the teen wilted on himself even more.
“Yes you could have, but you were able to stop with the help of your classmates. If it were not for you and Dark Shadow stepping in during that time a lot more people would have been hurt and even killed.” Aizawa said, rubbing his eyes and fighting back a yawn.
“Almost everyone’s quirk is dangerous at some point.” Hawks said cheerfully, keeping his wings wrapped around Tokoyami and Dark Shadow. “Like mine, I can make my feathers as sharp as knifes and slice anyone up easily, plus my talons help with that, Enji could burn people to a crisp without even trying, Present Mic could make us all go deaf if he wanted too, and I don’t even have to explain All Might.” Hawks chuckled.
Tokoyami nodded his head, a small, real smile on his beak when he took in his teachers words, feeling reassured in the fact that he knew had Aizawa and Hawks there with him. He could feel Dark Shadow’s awe and appreciation towards the adults and he couldn’t help but mirror his siblings emotions.
“Now come on!” Hawks spoke, this time his voice was more carefree but there was still an edge too it. “I’m starving, when’s dinner?” He asked making Aizawa and Tokoyami roll their eyes and Dark Shadow giggle.
In the end Mineta’s rude comments was the last straw for UA, despite Mineta’s pleading and begging for Aizawa not too, the teacher had him kicked out of UA the next day. Nezu didn’t have a problem with it, he practically raised Aizawa as his own kid and trusted the man with his life.
Plus the fact that Hawks, the Number 2 pro hero was very clear he wanted the child out of UA as well. Personally even though he would never admit it out loud, he was glad that the boy was gone and no longer causing the girls in his school discomfort.
Nezu would never admit it, not to any teacher, student, pro hero, or friend but he did favour Class 1-A over all of the other classes in his school. Something about the students amazed him on how they all acted so much like a family in such a short amount of time, even after everything they had all been through.
Mineta had been on so many strikes from many different teachers that it had all piled up and in the end there was no excuse for his constant inappropriate behaviour. Everyone in Class 1-A was overjoyed when they heard the news, but they were still all pissed when they found out what Mineta had said to Tokoyami who told them that he was fine and it didn’t matter.
Apparently Aizawa already had plans for someone else to take Mineta’s place so they weren’t down on any students, the new student joined the class a week after Mineta was gone. His name was Hitoshi Shinso and Class 1-A learned how scary the kid could really be.
Shinso, Bakugou, Tokoyami and Dark Shadow had formed their own little group that they decided to call the “Villainous Quirk Club” because most people viewed their quirks as evil and villainous. Within the first month it was clear that the 4 of them had no doubt become very close friends with each other, if you messed with one of them you messed with all of them.
Shinso was the brains of the group, he was the type of person to glare at you for hours if you even looked at him or his friends the wrong way. His stare was almost was creepy as Aizawa’s which kept most of the bully’s or trouble makers of the school away from him and his friends, he wouldn’t have a second thought of breaking your arm if you touched any of them.
Bakugou was the main strength and protector in the group, even though both Tokoyami and Shinso could handle themselves just fine. Bakugou’s rude and straightforward personality, plus his strong quirk made it so very few people went up against him. It was mostly because of him that nobody except Class 1-A ever dared to even talk with their group, in fear of Bakugou snapping and blowing their faces off. Bakugou had gotten detention for a week after beating up some student made fun of Shinso’s outfit.
Tokoyami was the heart of the group, he was the one who kept everyone in line and tried his best to keep Bakugou, Shinso and Dark Shadow from causing too much havoc. His quiet, deadpan, and calm nature clashed well with both Bakugou’s and Shinso’s personalities. He preferred to stay out of most fights but was the type of person who wouldn’t hesitate to knock the wind out of you if you pissed him off enough.
Dark Shadow was the chaotic one in the group, always trying to cause trouble or start a fight because he was bored, but the quirk made sure to never cause anyone harm in fear of Fumi getting in trouble because of him. He got along greatly with Bakugou despite their many differences. All of the adults except for Aizawa, Hawks, and Nezu were horrified when they found out that the four of them had started their own little club.
The four of them loved the same type of music, they all loved dark humour and deadpan comments, they didn’t mind when one of them threw rude, sassy comments at each other. They were all wild cards and adventurous plus they were the ones who preferred to be alone and they all trusted each other to be honest and blunt instead of sugar coating anything when talking to them like most of their other classmates would always do. They shared some of their past traumatic experiences and fears with one another and were no doubt the scariest group out of everyone in Class 1-A.
It surprised both almost nobody and everybody when the four of them instantly got along with each other, Bakugou could be at his lowest point, blasting and cursing at everyone as he stalked down the hallways but the moment Tokoyami, Dark Shadow, or Shinso walked past he could go from “fuck absolutely everybody” to “hey guys” without batting an eye.
Even though they were some of the most stoic and serious people at U.A, they were also the biggest menaces when grouped together. Lida still couldn’t get the pancake batter off the ceiling.
Aizawa had finally accepted his title as being the class dad, after all of the pestering from his husband Hizashi and every other teacher from UA it was clear even to him that the students all viewed him as a father figure and he treated them like he would his own kids.
What can he say, they were his problem children and he would go to the ends of the Earth to protect them.
(Don’t tell them that though or he will never be able to live it down.)
Hawks started dropping by more often, usually only coming by when he and Tokoyami were a little scuffed up from their latest fight and needed to be bandaged up a bit which would almost instantly end with Aizawa scolding them for their reckless behaviour until their ears were sore.
Well, Hawks was more like an inspiring, overprotective older brother to Tokoyami and Dark shadow. Hawks was part of their flock, and flock was family. Biologically related or not, it didn’t matter.
At the end of the day they were all a family, 20 adopted kids, Aizawa being the tired, overprotective dad and Hawks being the cool, young uncle that definitely had favourites (Tokoyami and Dark Shadow) and would drop by every now and then for the fun of it.
And Tokoyami and Dark Shadow finally had a real family.
