head over heels. // Jonathan Byers x Reader

Work Text:

"Hey (y/n), I have an idea." the addressed looked up confused. That came suddenly.

"Remember how you always said that you would like to meet new people?" she nodded. "Well I have a person in mind." (y/n) sighed and closed her book, resting her head in her hands.
"And who in particular do you have in mind?" Nancy smiled and pointed to a table two rows away. She furrowed her brows and tried to work out who exactly she meant.

"Nancy I hate to tell you but I didn't plan on meeting 20 new people. One at a time, I've been here a month, take it easy." She laughed briefly and shook her head.
"No silly. See the boy on the far right? That's Jonathan. Do you remember?" (y/n) rolled her eyes.

Ever since she met Nancy she tried to set her up with Jonathan. She didn't mind but she was new in Hawkins and shy. It was already a huge challenge to get to know Nancy's friends.
Well, he was one of them, but somehow it was never the right time to introduce him.

Still, she had to admit that he was quite cute. And from what Nancy had said about him, they would get along really well, but that's where the shyness came in again.

"No Nancy come on. I told you I am too shy. Remember the day you introduced me to Steve? I almost passed out because I was so nervous." She giggled as she thought about the day.
"I promise he's not much better than you at stuff like that. Introverted, shy, nervous. But I swear he's sweet. Almost the sweetest guy I know. You two would be so cute together. At least give it a try. For me?" tried to persuade her.
And when she saw Nancy's dog eyes, she sighed and nodded. "Yeah okay. If you say so." Nancy squealed with delight and clapped her hands.
"But-" she stopped her action and looked at (y/n) seriously.

"- two conditions." Nancy nodded attentively. "Not at school and you're around. If I have to do this alone I'll really pass out this time." Nancy giggled and nodded.

"Okay, deal." she said and held out her hand. (y/n) took it and shook her head with a smile. She couldn't deny that she was a little bit happy about it.

A week later, Nancy almost ran up to her. "(y/n)! (y/n)! (y/n)!" she said with a happy voice and a big grin on her face.
"Yeah?" Nancy took her hands and jumped up and down happily.
"He said yes. And that quite quickly. I didn't even have to persuade him, that's surprising because I actually have to do it all the time."

(y/n) chuckled and grabbed her shoulders. "Okay. No need to jump around like a ball."
Her eyes widened. "Are you kidding? And why am I happier than you are anyway?! You like him, he likes you- so when do you have time?"

(y/n) drew her eyebrows together. "I do not like him." she turned back to her locker.
"And why's that?" (y/n) sighed.
"I can't like him because I don't even know him. I'll admit he's pretty cute but that's it."
Nancy's huge grin returned. "Aha! See, that's the first step. I assure you after Thursday you'll be head over heels for him." (y/n) shook her head.

"So Thursday, huh? When?" Nancy grinned innocently and started walking to class with her.
"4 pm?" (y/n) sighed and nodded. "Okay, I'll be there." and opened the door to the classroom.

"I'll pick you up." (y/n) nodded before stepping into the classroom and letting the door slam behind her.

Thursday came and (y/n) sat helplessly in front of her closet. A stack of clothes next to her. She didn't want to wear her typical school outfit, but at the same time didn't want anything uncomfortable.

At the end she wore blue Jeans with some band tshirt. It was just her typical style.
She brushed her hair one last time and went downstairs to where Nancy was waiting in the kitchen.

"(y/n) honey, you didn't even mentioned that you are going on a date. Why don't you tell me that?" (y/n)'s eyes widened.
"Later mom. We have a tight schedule." she said between clenched teeth as she put on her shoes and pulled Nancy out of the house.

"Was that necessary? I have awkward conversations to do tonight." Nancy giggled and started her car.

"So what's the plan?" Nancy cleared her throat. "Well, I know it's very cliche, but he suggested we could walk around the lake. And by we, I mean you and him. Steve's coming too, but just so I don't have to wait by myself. Means you two take a little walk and get to know each other." (y/n) sighed. "No. No sighs. This will be good (y/n). You'll like him."

The rest of the ride was quiet. When they got to the lake, they got out of the car and saw Jonathan waiting at his car. Her heart pounded faster and her hands started to tingle.
"Nance, I wanna go home. Let's do it some other time. Okay? Great."
Nancy took her arm and slighty pulled her towards Jonathan.
"Too late sweetie." she whispered and waved at Jonathan. He waved back slightly but had his eyes focused on (y/n).

When they arrived she noticed and blushed. "Hey Jon, are you there?" Nancy asked, giggling, bringing him back to reality.
"W- What? Yeah." Nancy kept giggling and shook her head.

"I told you he likes you." she whispered quietly in her ear and pushed her a little further forward. "Have fun. See you later." said Nancy and then disappeared in the other direction.

She glanced after Nancy and then at Jonathan. She cleared her throat and smiled slightly. Neither of them knew exactly what to say.

"Uh so shall we?" he asked, pointing to the path behind him. She nodded and pressed her lips together. After taking a deep breath, she worked up the courage to ask the first question.
"Nance told me you like music?" he nodded. "Which kind?"

"To be honest, a little bit of everything. But I like Bowie, the clash, the smiths, talking heads. That kind of music, definitely. You like music too, I assume?" he asked, pointing to the t-shirt. "In fact, we have similar taste in music. What's your favorite Bowie album?" he looked thoughtful but quickly came to an answer. "I like 'Hunky Dory'. Or 'Diamond Dogs'. I don't know, there's something about them." she raised an eyebrow. "Really? Did you forget 'PinUps' or 'Young Americans' or 'Station to Station'?" Jonathan then laughed. "Okay I see you know your stuff. What about Billy Idol? And don't say 'Rebel Yell'." she smiled and thought for a moment.

"Okay, even if 'rebel yell' is really good, 'do not stand in the shadows' is better. But from the first album, 'shooting stars' is really good too. Well I don't know, between the three it's a difficult Decision." when she finished her sentence she smiled contentedly and looked at the lake. "Wow." she heard him whisper to himself before clearing his throat.

"What about movies?" she bit her lower lip. This went better than expected. "Okay, it's really old but one of my favorites. A streetcar named desire?" He looked at her questioningly. "I've heard that before, never seen it." she looked at the floor smiling.
"Well it's really good. You should watch it."

He cleared his throat again and gathered the courage for his next question. "Maybe we could watch it together sometime?" she looked at him with a smile.
Nancy obviously hadn't lied.
"Yeah sure."

They walked for a while, lost in conversation until they decided to go back.
(y/n) didn't want to keep Nancy waiting too long. But when they got back to the meeting point, Nancy's car was gone.

But she couldn't just leave them here, could she? And then it hit her.

Of course she drove away so Jonathan could take her with him.

"Everything okay?" he asked from the side. "Well Nancy's gone." she said with a nervous laugh and looked around again.
"That's no problem. I can take you with me."

She scratched her neck and looked at the floor. "Are you sure?" He shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah why not? And hey, I might be able to convince you about 'Diamond Dogs'." he said jokingly and led her to his car.

The drive to her house was filled with laughter and good conversation. And although it was a slightly longer drive, it felt much too short. He stopped in front of her door and parked his car. "I'll take you to the door." he said and got out before she could object.

He opened the door for her and helped her out of the car. In front of her door, he began to get a little nervous again. "Um so, do you think we can see each other again?" she blushed again and smiled up at him. "I think we can, yes. It was really nice today." he nodded. "Good night Jonathan." she said quietly and gave him a light kiss on the cheek before she unlocked her door and walked inside.

When he was at the car he looked again at her house and saw her at the window. He waved one last time before getting in and driving off.

She ran up the stairs to her room and was terribly shocked when she saw Nancy on her bed. "You- why did you- Nancy!" the one addressed just laughed and faltered. "Come on, I want to hear everything. As compensation, I put your closet back in place." (y/n) rolled her eyes and then started practically gushing about the afternoon with jonathan.
