Work Text:
"Seriously? Pffff! Those obnoxious customers really get on my nerves sometimes. Do they really think we'd be programmed with anything they need? We're not drink dispensers!" Roxy scoffed as she walked alongside Monty through the maintenance tunnel, heading to parts and services for an impromptu check-up.
"Yeah! Fucking stupid! They can get their own drinks with their own two legs! I'm busy with, I don't know, working???" He responded, equally annoyed at the entitlement of some customers.
"Yeah suuure you are. You're such a hard worker" Roxy snarked in the most sarcastic tone she could manage, looking over at the peeved bassist.
"I am, thank you very much!" He huffed back.
"You're such a reliable worker. You never sneak off during fan meets or birthday parties to chill in your golf swamp."
"It is NOT a swamp! I don't know what they were trying to make it look like. A jungle or something? You'd think a bayou would make more sense."
"Basically a swamp."
"Don't even-"
"What do you even do when you're there? Just hide from everyone? Sneaking off to see a secret lover?" The wolf grumbled as she pushed open the door to the repair area.
"That's even more far-fetched than anything Chica could come up with! I ain't got no secret lover. I'm a loner type of guy. Don't need anyone aside I, Me an-"
"MONTY~!!! OH MY GOSH, I DIDN'T EXPECT TO SEE YOU HERE!!!" A sudden squeal completely cut off the conversation, scaring both the robots stiff. They turned to look at whoever said it, though Monty was fully aware who.
Sun was sitting on a table with an arm missing, kicking his feet excitedly and swaying happily.
"H… heya… Sun…" he grumbled and raised a hand, waving hesitantly at the enthusiastic solar bot.
"Oh! OH! Is that Roxanne Wolf??? Hello Roxanne! Nice to see you here too!" He waved at the wolf as well.
"Hey Sun. What was the screaming about? Did Monty really scare you that bad?" She teased and walked over to stand beside him.
"Huh? Of course not! I'd never be afraid of a cool guy like him!"
Monty felt himself freaking out at that, worried that he'd let slip that they have a pretty close friendship going on. He walked over and tried to stand himself between the two.
"Ha ha! You know it! Coolest Glamrock around! And don't you go forgetting it!"
"... What's going on?" Roxy asked in a very unamused voice, clearly catching on to the gator's discomfort and the sun's confusion.
"What are you talking about? Noth-"
"OH! This? Yeah, one of the kids thought that they could make my arm glitter if they unloaded all the glitter glue into my joints. It's getting a serious clean out right now!"
Thank you Sun, you just saved my entire ass. Monty felt so relieved by him cutting in like that.
"Damn. That sucks. Can't imagine having to work with all those little demons everyday." Roxy groaned and rolled her eyes.
"HEY!!! Don't call my rays of light that! They are absolutely wonderful! They just don't understand everything as well as the grown ups do quite yet!"
"Heh-yeah! Sure! Those spawns of satan probably broke you on purpose. Why do you let them push you around like that? If they do that shit, just punt them across the room! You're ten times their size!"
Sun gasped in horror and put his hand to his chest, looking like he had just been called a butthead.
"HOW COULD YOU EVEN SUGGEST SOMETHING LIKE THAT?!? THAT'S CRUEL, THAT'S BRUTAL, THAT'S UNACCEPTABLE, THAT-"
"Hey. Hey Sunny! It's cool. She's not being serious. She's just a jerk, like Moon!" Monty walked over and put a hand on his shoulder, which caused him to quickly relax a bit.
"Yeah… Moon likes to be really mean." Sun sighed and fiddled with his neck ruffle, getting a little bit antsy from the uncomfortable conversation topic.
Roxy stared at the two, feeling like there's something she might be missing. Then sun looked over to her quickly, making him whimper lightly and move closer to the gator.
"S-so why are you two here? It's not check up time already, is it?" He asked and looked down at his lap, his feet no longer kicking like they were earlier and his mood seemingly completely ruined. That pissed Monty off. How often would this guy have his fun stomped on by bitter, salty, pessimistic assholes?
"Well-" before he could finish his first word, Sun let out another gasp, this time sounding less dramatic, but still very worried.
"Wait! Did you get hurt?!? Oh no! You did, didn't you?! Oh no no no NO! Did you get a scratch?! Broken endo?! System glitch?! W-what c-c-can I do to help?! Do I need to contact the tech?!" He started rambling and grabbed a hold of Monty's face, inspecting it carefully and turning it around gently with his hand so he wouldn't accidentally hurt him.
The Glamrock felt himself heating up again from the sudden attention being heaved onto him, being doted on as if he was a little kid who twisted their ankle. It just made him feel all kinds of embarrassed.
"H-h-heeey Sunny boy! It's fine! I'm good! N-No need to be all worried like that! I'm not hurt! I was called here for a random check-up is all!" He insisted and gave both Sun's shoulders a comforting pat.
"Y-you sure? You're not just saying it to calm me down? Promise???" Sun pushed further, seemingly not entirely convinced.
"I promise, Sunny. I promise. Would I lie?"
"N-No! Of course not!"
Sun let him go and used his only hand to support his weight as he was leaning back again, having leaned over to check on the gator.
Monty chuckled awkwardly and rubbed his neck, feeling a little bit better seeing him so relieved from the good news.
"... What the hell did I just witness?" Roxy suddenly piped up. She looked like one big question mark about that whole scene. Monty tensed up and froze on the spot, his entire metal casing beginning to heat up out of pure hot embarrassment. He completely forgot she was there. Sun seemed to also just remember she was present and had a similar reaction, fans loudly turning on as he tried covering his face with only one hand available.
"... So… this is your secret lover then?" She then hummed and crossed her arms, enjoying the reaction that got. Both of them became increasingly flustered, Monty starting to hurl obscenities her way.
*~*~*
A while after Sun had left, Freddy and Chica had shown up and got looked over for any minor issues. Afterwards, they sat down with Monty and Roxy to wait for their results. The room was quiet and no one seemed comfortable with breaking the silence, so they just sat there and listened to the ambient sounds.
That was until Roxy decided she knew of a good conversation topic.
"Soooo… you and the Daycare attendant, huh?" She mumbled and threw a glance at Monty teasingly. He shot up at that and gave her the nastiest glare. Chica also perked up at that, since that sounded like some good gossip.
"What do you mean? What about them? Wait… OH MY GOD! Monty and the Daycare attendant???" She squealed and looked up at him with eyes that sparkled with curiosity.
"Oh my god, can you just drop it, mutt??? There is NOTHING going on between us, ok?!"
"Did something happen with the Daycare attendant?" Freddy finally spoke and looked at him with a bit of concern. Monty was starting to get really annoyed, not just due to the poking in his business, but because they refused to refer to the subject of conversation by name.
"Nothing happened!" He growled angrily.
"Sure. All the worrying and coddling were definitely nothing" the wolf teased and smirked at the increasingly exasperated bot.
"CODDLING??? Montgomery gator! Don't tell me you and the Daycare attend-" Chica began speaking.
"HIS FUCKING NAME IS SUN, YOU BRAINLESS TIN CANS!!!" Monty suddenly burst out and growled at them, standing up from his seat. Everyone just looked at him in surprise until Freddy spoke up.
"Ah. My apologies. I didn't think about it. And I… wasn't sure which one we were referring to."
"Whatever, Fazbear! And you two! Fine, I'll admit it! Me and Sun are friends! We've been hanging out every now and again! He's very friendly and overly cheerful. He doesn't really think about personal space that much. It ain't special, ok?!" The gator finally confessed and roared in frustration.
"I don't care what he did. You just let him hang all over you and you even touched him first! You don't let anyone touch you, not even guests unless they're really young!" Roxy added in and grinned. Chica had a face of absolute delight, looking between the two with excitement.
"Monty and Sun are best friends?! That's so sweet~! I bet he lets Sun drag him around to do whatever he likes to do! Or maybe he beats up bullies for him!"
"I'm not a damn pushover like that bear! I can tell him off if I feel like it! Now, don't you have anything more interesting to discuss than my casual friendship with Sun?"
"... Does this mean you're buddies with Moon too?" Chica asked, leaning in closer inquisitively.
"FUCK NO! That freak is still a jerk! Don't even joke about it!"
*~*~*
Everything was fine. No one had anything wrong with them. So they were all let go to continue on with their day. Repeat of the same routine they all always went through, with some added 'random' questions about Monty's relationship with Sun.
Mostly the usual stuff that anyone would ask about a new friend. How did this whole thing start? What do you two even do together? How long have you been hanging out? How close are you?
His answer was the same to every single question. "Non'ya business."
He felt very annoyed about the whole revelation. It wasn't something he wanted to be made public, or at least not shared with the only people that knew him personally. When he took a moment to think about it, he wasn't sure exactly why he was so secretive about it all. It seemed like there was no middle step between the two.
Friend with Sun = Shameful or Uncool.
But that was complete nonsense! There was nothing wrong with Sun! He was a nice, polite, cheerful and overall fun person. Was it that he worked with toddlers for a living? Was it his goofy, childish personality? Or his anxious way of acting, being a big pushover to a bunch of kids?
Whatever it was, there had to be a reason why he felt so emasculated by the rest of the band knowing about it. Should he figure out why or just shrug it off and bare with it?
Once again, Monty decided to take those uncomfortable emotions and shove them deep down to be saved for later in his green room, when he'd obliterate whatever poor item was closest to him. For the time being, some golf should help clear those clouds from his mind.
Damn it! He's already begun sounding like that goof!
The reptile grumbled as he walked through the 'plex, trying to keep his mind focused on the golf he'd be playing and not the possible gossip going on behind his back about whatever scandalous things he was getting involved with. God, they really didn't have anything better to-
"HI. PLEASE TAKE THIS MAP."
"GHA!!! GOD DAMN IT, MAP BOT! CAN YOU NOT JUMP OUT AT ME FOR ONCE?!" He yelled in frustration at the innocent looking robot, who simply stood there and kept its hand outstretched with a map in it.
"... TAKE A MAP."
"I DON'T NEED A MAP, YOU BRAIN-DEAD HUNK OF JUNK!!!"
"... Free map" it simply muttered quietly before turning around to roll away from the glaring rockstar. Monty just growled quietly before he straightened out and stormed off again. He was so close to completely breaking that thing apart!
He finally got to the entrance of Gator Golf, only to be completely stopped by some tape blocking the entrance. He stared at the text written on the small sign hanging from said tape with a picture of that dumb little white bear on it.
'Area currently under maintenance, sorry for the inconvenience'
Inconvenience was an understatement. Monty was downright offended by this ugly little freak of a safety mascot. Why did it have to be under maintenance right then!? Couldn't it have been on one of his good days?! He really needed some golf to unwind! Why did the universe hate him so freaking bad?!
…
"No! Ya know what?! Fuck management! Fuck the pizza 'plex! Fuck Fazbear entertainment! Fuck the Glamrocks and FUCK SUN!!!" He roared out loudly before raising his claws into the air and swiping them down on the tape. It parted for him and fell to the side, allowing him to stomp his way inside to finally play some golf.
*~*~*
Sun hummed to himself as he looked up at the art wall. He tilted his head in contemplation while examining it.
"Should we rearrange the drawings? I feel like it's all just sitting up there randomly. It might be nice to organise them."
'Don't you think that might upset some of the more neurodivergent kids who don't like sudden changes?'
"Yeah, but I thought if we tried to place them in order of color, it might look very pleasing! I know Caleb is into that stuff!"
'Maybe. But remember Karla? She freaked out when someone tried to move her drawing to the left to fit their own.'
"Hm… what if we ask them tomorrow if we can rearrange it? That way they get a say in it!"
Sunny suggested as he walked up and looked at a drawing of Moon and Monty, posing like they were about to fight each other.
"Did you convince Darren to draw this?"
'It was only an idea. He asked ~'
The sound of a door opening and heavy footsteps pulled his attention away from the conversation and made him get giddy. Monty! Oh he had really hoped he'd come visit that night! He had something he desperately wanted to talk about! As the doors to the playground opened, Sun whirled around to face his friend.
"Monty! Hi! Ho-"
He cut himself off as he saw that, instead of an alligator, it was a chicken standing there.
Chica looked a little surprised by the greeting, but quickly started chuckling at him and walked further inside. "Sorry, Hun! Just little old me!"
"Ms. Chica? What are you doing here?"
"I just came to talk a little! Heard you and Monty had become great friends. I had no idea!"
"Oh! Yes! Yes, we are really good friends! He's the bestest friend an animatronic could ask for!"
"Really? Are you sure we're talking about the same alligator here?"
"Yeah? Why… Why are you asking?"
Chica laughed and waved her hand at him. It only made him even more confused.
"You're saying that Monty, Mr. Grumpy Gator, the guy who tears his room apart nightly, is nice to you? That's the biggest twist I've ever heard!"
"W-wait! He tears his room apart every night?! Why would he do that?!"
"Probably because of his anger issues! He has a bad temper! But, between you and me, I think it's because he's self-conscious. But, hey! Aren't we all to some extent?"
"Um… I-I-I guess. B-But he's really not so bad! He's sw-" Sun interrupted himself and thought he should probably choose his words a little more carefully.
"He's very nice to me and he's very cool. He has helped me a lot with some issues of my own and made me feel a lot better."
"Ok. Now I know you're joking with me! But if you're being serious, that might explain his reaction earlier!"
Sun tensed up and looked over at her nervously, not liking the way she said that.
"R-Reaction? To what?"
"Oh sorry! I should probably tell you. Roxy told us about the thing that happened in parts and services. She said you two were being very touchy and friendly. He got really mad and started yelling at us about there being nothing between you two until we finally wore him down and he admitted you two were buddies! He was fuming after that and wouldn't talk to any of us!"
The Daycare attendant stood frozen on the spot as he processed all the information the chicken just spewed all over him.
Monty tried to hide their friendship?
He got mad at the others asking about it?
Had Sun somehow embarrassed him with the scene in parts and services?
Why was Monty so embarrassed about the others knowing he was his friend?
"-It was kinda weird how he was sneaking off so often at night and now at least we finally figured out why! Found out about his little secret!" Chica was still talking as Sun was thinking all these saddening thoughts. Was Monty really that ashamed of his relationship? Was Sun really that bad?
"... S-sorry! But I gotta go! I have something I need to do!" He finally spoke up as he walked past her towards the exit. She looked at him surprised before following after.
"W-wait! What's the matter? Don't you wanna gossip a little bit?"
"Sorry. I just need to find him. I need to… ask him some things."
"Hey… is everything alright, sweetheart? You sound upset!"
"I just don't get it. Why would he be so embarrassed of me?"
"Oh Hun! Nononono! It's not like that! There is nothing wrong with you! Some people just get embarrassed when others see them being soft for something or someone."
"Why?! What's so wrong with being soft and sweet?!"
"Well Sunny, he prides himself on being macho and cool, so him being all nice makes him seem unmanly. At least, I assume that's what he's thinking!"
"Oh…" he muttered quietly and looked down at the floor, still not so sure about all of that. It didn't make sense to him. He didn't get it. And Moon sure wasn't 100% clear either.
"If you really wanna talk with him, I'd suggest Gator Golf. He goes there to relax."
"Thank you, Chica. I appreciate the help" he said and patted her shoulder before running off into the pizza 'plex.
The animatronic quickly made his way towards the atrium and quickly scanned the area for the golf course. He couldn't find it at first, until he spotted an area where construction appeared to be happening. He ran over to take a closer look, seeing that it indeed was where he was going.
Looking over at the entrance, he saw some tape that had been broken, with a ruined sign of poor little helpy.
'He definitely went in there.'
"Yeah. I agree. Let's look" Sun sighed as he nervously approached Gator Golf, his body starting to get shaky from all the demoralising thoughts swirling around his mind. He really worried that Monty did find him lame or something and would decide to leave him. What if being cool was more important to him? That he didn't want to show weakness at all and would completely shut himself away.
'Sun. Don't think about that stuff. Listen to me. Just count for a second and calm down.'
"A-Alright. Alright. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5…" Sun began counting so he could try and relax a little and forget those intrusive thoughts.
'Good. Now let's focus on the task at hand. Monty'
"Yeah… M-Monty!" He called out and started walking again, looking around the area. It seemed to mostly be covered in tarps, construction equipment and scaffolding. There wasn't much course to speak of at that moment.
"Why would Monty go here while it's under maintenance?" He asked confused as he walked through, looking around at the maze of tarps he had to navigate.
'No idea. He probably didn't care and just wanted to play some golf.'
Sun sighed and nodded, lifting another curtain to duck under. Then he heard something in the distance. A loud, guttural creak before an awful clatter and bash of metals echoed through the attraction. It made Sun jump from shock and look in the general direction of the sound.
"M-Monty?! MONTY!?!" he shouted and began running as fast as he could towards it. He dodged between ladders and pallets while jumping over boxes to hurry over to the noise. What if that was Monty? What if he broke something? He must be really mad to do that!
The solar bot rounded a corner, but came to an abrupt stop as he spotted the source of the sound.
It was indeed Monty.
With broken limbs and damage to the right side of his body.
Sunny gasped in horror and covered his mouth, taking a shocked step back as he couldn't help but stare at the scene. What happened to him?! Did he fall?! Was he ok?! Did he seriously break something?!
"MONTY!!!" He yelled as he ran over to the unconscious robot, falling onto his knees and checking over his broken body with unsteady hands. He was trembling so badly, he was scared he might just make everything worse by touching him at all. All he could do was sob and repeat his name in an attempt to reach him.
'Sunshine! Sundrop! Shhhhh. Calm down. Everything is going to be fine. It's alright. Just calm yourself.'
"B-BU-BU-BUT MOON!!! MONTY IS BROKEN!!! HE'S HURT!!! MONTY IS HURT AND DAMAGED AND I COULDN'T STOP IT!!!" He just continued to wail and cry as he buried his face in his hands. He was absolutely devastated.
'Sundrop. Shhhhh. It's not that bad. Look at him.'
At Moon's request, he raised his head and glanced down at the heap of an alligator. He scanned him to check further into the extent of the damage.
'See? Scans show it's majority external and a few fractures to the endo limbs. Only his right side and tail are broken. No harm to his system.'
"H-h-he's going t-to be alright?"
'Yes, my sun ray. He'll be just fine after a visit from the techs.'
"Oh thank goodness! My poor Monty! You'll be ok! You're going to be fine!" Sun muttered weakly as he laid his face plate again the other animatronic's chest, running careful fingers through his mohawk in a comforting manner.
A soft groan left him as he seemed to boot up again, eyes squinting open slightly and trying to adjust. When they did… he was met with a sight that caused his circuits to spark with some sort of confusing emotion.
He saw Sun, laying on his chest and staring up at him with this look of concern. Even if his face didn't change, he could tell by looking at his eyes. His hand was also gently brushing his hair in slow motions, feeling quite soothing. It made the gator release a huff and let his eyes close again so he could get his bearings.
"S-s-sun…"
"MONTY!?! You're awake! Are you ok?! What happened to you?!" Sun shot up from his chest and started looking him over again, as if it would reveal further injuries.
"Sunny… I'm… I'm sorry, man. I freaked out… and I cou… couldn't tell you… why. I got so… mad… so emb-emb-emb-"
"Shhhhhh. Don't strain yourself. You might have some wires loose in the voice box, judging from that glitch. It will all be fine. I'll get you to the repair cylinder. We'll get you fixed right up."
He then put his hands underneath the big bulky gator and used all his strength to lift him into his arms. Monty let out a confused grumble and looked up at him.
"Su-su-sunny. You'll hu-u-u-urt yourself. Just leabfysfcb- leave me here forrrrrrr the techs-s-s-sss…"
"Nonsense! I could never leave you alone like this! Now come on. Let's get you fixed." Still struggling somewhat, Sun began walking out Gator Golf and towards parts and services. Monty felt a little slow at that moment, almost dizzy in a way. Everything hurt and he still had a lingering feeling of guilt from the way he'd been acting that day.
But… he didn't feel… all terrible. He looked up at his friend that was carrying him off to help him. Now, it could have just been the blair from the lamps or Monty's damaged eyes, but at that moment, Sun was practically glowing. He looked like the actual sun, but it didn't hurt to look at him. It felt nice, comforting. Which meant he could stare for as long as he wanted. He looked absolutely radiant.
"Wow… … … you're lovely…"
"H-?!" The taller robot went rigid at that remark and stared down at him in confusion. Monty just grinned and leaned his head against his shoulder, closing his eyes so he didn't have too much outwards stimulus overwhelming him. He still felt dizzy after all.
"Sorry… didn't mean… t-t-to come o-off-off-off as rude. You're just… so cool" he grumbled and listened closely to the fans turning on in his body. It was very soothing and nice, distracting from any lingering thoughts from earlier in the day.
"HhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhThanks, Monty! I-I… um… that means a lot. You're too sweet!"
"Me? Sweet? Nah."
Sun looked down at the surprisingly calm gator confused. "Nah? What do you mean nah?"
"I ain't sweeeeeeeet… I'm nas-nasty and mean… I'm rude… full of myyyyy… myself. I have issues and I… I I I I I I break stuff when thi-things don't go my way…"
"Oh… Monty… " his voice sounded so nice, so nurturing and empathetic. God, he wanted to tear himself apart for cursing his name earlier. He was just so perfect and amazing. He then continued speaking.
"I understand. It's frustrating when something goes wrong. I get that often. I blame myself and start to worry about the consequences of said things going wrong. Which is why I get anxious. You probably think that makes me a coward and weak hearted."
WHAT?! HOW COULD HE TALK ABOUT HIMSELF LIKE THAT?! THIS WAS AN OUTRAGE!
"N-No no-no-no-no-no-n-! You're so great! You're not just so-some nervous mess-s-s-ss! It's just how you ha-aaaaa-andle stress!"
"Right."
Wait… did he just fall into the trap of a life lesson?
"You're not just your anger issues. You have a sense of fairness and you are very protective of your friends. You enjoy jokes and sometimes taking jabs at Moon. You don't like samey stuff and need change to not feel bored. Always interested in trying out new things."
"That's not what… others know me for…"
"Could it be because your persona was built around being cool, not enjoying anything that wasn't hardcore and not tolerating anything you don't like?"
God, the way Sun sounded like such a wise-guy just then, he absolutely loved it! What an attitude! So different to the usual Sunny.
"Sorry. That was uncalled f-"
"No! No. I've earned it. And… it's ni-nice to see you gain cofi-i-idence-ce-ce…"
Sun smiled down at him, making his robotic heart do a flip in his chest. He looked like an actual fucking sun god! Like Apollo himself! How dare he be so amazing?!
"Thank you, Monty. I really appreciate it. I've already contacted the techs. They should be on their way."
Oh. They had already arrived. That was fast. He had hoped to talk with Sunny for a bit longer. He really didn't want to be alone like this. Broken and all emotional for some reason.
The taller robot carefully placed Monty down on the chair in the repair cylinder and gave his hand a reassuring pat.
"I should get going now. Wouldn't want the techs to see me doting on you and being all close. So I'll-"
Sun yelped loudly as his arm was gripped onto, the hold strong, but not in a forceful or harmful way. It felt… desperate.
"Please! Please don't go! I… fuck, man! I don't wanna be all macho and shit right now! I don't wanna be alone… please. I feel all stupid like for breaking like that and… I don't think I can explain what happened myself. I feel so ashamed!"
Sun stared down at him with this look of bewilderment in his eyes, as if he just discovered a previously unknown creature. It was so humiliating…
Until the mood shifted and he affectionately placed a hand on the gator's arm. He gently pulled his grip loose before going out the cylinder, picking up a chair and sitting himself right beside him.
"Of course. I'll stay right here for as long as you'd like. I'll even stay while they repair you if you want me to. I promise. Thank you, Mont. Thank you for being so open… I was afraid you wouldn't feel safe around me."
Was that a new nickname? Not very different, but no one had called him that before. He liked it. And how silly. For him to think Monty wouldn't feel safe around him. Of course he did. Sun was the most safe person he's ever met.
How could he feel anything but safe?
