Work Text:

Mrs. Boonchuy wondered how such a relationship could work, where the poles were complete opposites from each other. Sure, there’s couples like that out there. But wouldn’t you rather be with someone similar to you? Maybe you’d understand each other better. And she kept wondering, until she observed her daughter and her two best friends.

You wouldn’t expect someone like Anne hanging out with Marcy, and much less a third, taller, blonde party in the form of Sasha.

Yet somehow they always seemed to be together despite their weird, contrasting personalities, no matter what the situation was. You’d always find them side by side, cuddled on the sofa watching a new K-Pop MV suggested by Anne, or playing Mario Kart while Marcy dragged Sasha to compete with her.

Three of a kind, they are. Mrs. Boonchuy shook her head while looking at them. They didn’t need to question their relationship, they just existed together, and that was all that mattered to them.

Funnily enough; they reminded her of the giant, floating, spherical rocks (celestial bodies?) in space. How could they not? They were always represented as opposites in human culture: the Sun, the Moon and everything in between. But if only one of them went missing, the world would not work properly. Just like the trio before her.

Marcy was the Sun. The girl was bright, warm; too much for her own good, sometimes. She was stubbornly willing to bathe the people she met with affable light and kindness (even if some of them didn’t deserve it). She made every day of their lives shine —the bad and the good ones (but mostly the bad ones)—, and in return, they orbited around her, showering her with the same love and affection Marcy gave.

Sasha was the Moon. Her shining was unlike the Sun, hers was cooler, not nearly as blinding. Those who didn’t know her would probably describe her as too frowny. However, those two knew every face of their moon. They knew about the darkest one, and yet, adored it as much as the brightest. Until the day when Sasha is ready to light her other side, her two stars will be patiently waiting for her, always welcoming her with open arms (although she already knows that).

Anne was the Stars. She was patient, observant. She picked up on every single new habit her partners adopted: how Marcy would now cackle at every joke instead of only giggling, or how Sasha lately allowed herself more contact with their other friends. And just like the stars, she was always present for her beloved ones (whether it was day or night): looking after the Sun so it didn’t burn itself with its own warmth, or comforting the Moon on its most obscure nights.

It was an interesting picture, to say the least. But Mrs. Boonchuy understood, if just a bit. As if they had a little universe of their own.

Ah. Maybe the “opposites attract” trope had some truth behind it. Not for everyone, but at least for them.

It worked for them.
