Puppy Love

Summary:

Join Lucky the Pizza Dog and Fanny the Akita as they play matchmaker for their beloved humans

Notes:

Yet another idea that slammed into me on my commute to work.
Lucky and Fanny ship Yelena and Kate hard.

Dogs talking are in italics.
I imagine Lucky sounds like Wishbone and Fanny is a mix between Melina and Yelena.

Work Text:

This is the *BEST* day ever! Fresh air, there’s snow on the ground. I had some really good pizza for breakfast. Best. Day. Ever. Lucky thought to himself as he trotted next to Kate through Central Park. AND WE’RE GOING TO THE DOG RUN! Lucky barked with happiness as he grinned up at Kate, his tongue flopped out his mouth.

“Excited, bud?” Kate grinned down at the golden retriever. They had spent the holidays with Clint and his family. Lucky had the time of his life, running around with Cooper, Lila and Nathaniel . He snuggled up against Laura as they watched Clint and Kate try to outdo each other with their coin tossing. And…they got to ride back in a quinjet . Clint escorted Kate and Lucky back to New York City, where he met with the new heads of the new and improved SHIELD.

With little ceremony, Clint transferred the mantle of the Hawkeye to Kate Bishop. Of course the brunette was excited and Lucky fed off the energy. SHIELD offered a contract to Kate which would help tremendously after realizing she would need to dissolve Bishop Securities and would need to earn an income. However, Kate negotiated with SHIELD to sell any assets and research from Bishop Securities to improve their technology and defense department. Clint was smugly proud of his protégé and was relieved that the young Hawkeye would be able to provide for herself.

Upon returning to New York City, Kate returned to her loft above the pizzeria and scheduled an overhaul of the apartment which still smelled pretty toasty. Since she left in a rush during the Tracksuit/Yelena situation she never got the chance to clean. Kate pulled a disgusting face at the remnants of Kate’s and Yelena’s Dining-with-the-Enemy dinner. It smelt so bad that even Lucky tried not to gag.

That was a few days ago. Lucky and Kate were staying at her aunt’s until the refurb was done (it wouldn’t be more than a week since she used SHIELD contractors to install a state of the art security system in addition to cleaning up the loft).

Which brings us to Lucky trotting happily towards the dog run. It had been a life changing few weeks for the beloved one eye golden retriever.

I was living on the streets, eating garbage when this huma came and saved me from a car. And now! I have a home, food and a human to love. And she’s a superhero! Lucky thought to himself. How could his life get any better?

Lucky could barely hold himself back when Kate unhooked his leash and let him run off to play with his doggie friends. He saw Butch the poodle (she was okay. Kind of a diva but okay). There was Lenny the terrier (He LOVED Lenny. That dog always had the best jokes). Devin the German Shepherd (He was one of the older dogs. He was a retired K9 agent. He had seen some things but took Lucky under his wing when they both realized their humans protected other humans). Lucky ran around with his friends until they all stopped and sniffed the air.

That’s a new smell Lenny said with an excited tremble.

She smells…tough Butch said with an air of indifference.

She smells…Russian? Devin tried to confirm. Lucky tilted his head.

She smells…really familiar. Like…in my home…familiar. Lucky said, confused.

You smell familiar too, golden retriever. The Akita huffed as she cautiously approached the other dogs. The pack of dogs began to carefully sniff each other out, trying to determine if the newcomer was worthy to be trusted. Lucky got right up to the Akita and sniffed her incessantly.

You. I know you. I mean…you smell really really familiar. Lucky said.

I agree but I don’t know any one eye dogs.  The Akita said in a neutral tone.

Which one is your human? Lucky asked

My Master is over there. She’s calling me the Akita said as she obediently responded to the whistle from her blonde owner. Lucky chased after the newcomer.

“Hello there, handsome.” The blonde woman said softly. Lucky wagged his tail as he sniffed the blonde’s hand. She really smelled familiar.

Your human has been to my home. Lucky said to the Akita.

Perhaps your Master was her mark the Akita said in a bored tone. Lucky tilted his head in confusion.

Mark? Lucky asked. The Akita rolled her eyes.

My Master is a Black Widow. She probably was scoping out your home because your Master was a mark of hers. The Akita said with a slight huff. Lucky barked.

Your human tried to hurt my human? Lucky said with a slight whine to his voice.

“What’s wrong, little puppy? Where’s your owner?” The blonde lady looked around, trying to picture the owner of such a trusting puppy. Her eyes narrowed on a tall, lanky but familiar brunette. She smirked to herself.

“Your Kate Bishop’s, aren’t you, малютка?

Lucky wagged his tail.

She knows my human! Lucky said excitedly. He barked in Kate’s direction, who was not paying attention as she was knee deep in a Pokémon Go battle. Lucky huffed and barked again. Kate’s head shot up and froze when she saw who was with her dog.

“Oh shit! Lucky! Get back here!” Kate yelled as she ran to her dog.

Look! My human is coming to see us! She’s going to be so happy to see your human! Lucky said as he jumped around excitedly. The Akita remained impassive, rolling her eyes at the antics of the overly excited golden retriever.

“Ah, Kate Bishop! What a nice surprise!” Yelena drawled casually. Kate stumbled to a stop.

“What are you doing here? Don’t hurt my dog! Wait…why are you here? Wait…you have a dog??” Kate rushed out. Yelena chuckled.

“You are safe, Kate Bishop. I told you. I never meant any harm to you. You were never my intended target.” Yelena said as she reached down to pet her dog’s head. The Akita preened at the attention before resuming her protective stance.

“What are you doing here? I thought you’d be long gone. Maybe on a mission to kill another Avenger” Kate said sarcastically. Yelena brought a hand over her chest in mock hurt.

“What? One: I told you, I have never been to New York. I recently found myself without employment so I decided to take an extended vacation. Two: What other Avenger would I try to kill? All the cool ones are gone.” Yelena said with a sad tone. Kate’s face fell in shame.

“Dammit…I’m sorry. I always say the wrong thing. Clint said I need to work on it. What do you mean you have no employment?” Kate questioned.

“After our little fight, I had a nice heart to heart with your Hawkeye. I remembered what you said. I should look into who hired me to kill Barton. I went a step further. I looked into my boss and I tell you….she was not a good person. So…I quit. I have enough money to last a few years. I’m renting a small Airbnb near here.” Yelena said as she pointed in the general direction of her apartment.

“I didn’t know you had a dog” Kate said. Yelena laughed.

“Of all the information I just gave you, that’s what you went with? This is Fanny. She’s two. She’s a very good puppy.” Yelena said with affection. Kate smiled as she realized she was seeing a softer side to the Black Widow. She knew she had seen a bit of this side with their Mac & Cheese night but it was nice to see Yelena at ease. Not hard or withdrawn as she previously had seen.

“Well she’s adorable. Where did she stay when you were on missions though? I never took you to be somewhere with a permanent home base.” Kate said as she gestured for Yelena to sit on the nearby bench. Lucky took this as  cue to go back to playing with his friends.

See! Our humans like each other. We should be friends. You want to be my friend, Fanny? Lucky asked excitedly. Fanny tilted her head in thought.

My Master seems to trust your Master. Let’s do a week trial. You don’t smell too bad. Wanna play assassin and bad guy? Fanny asked with a glint in her eye.

Wait…aren’t assassin’s bad guys? Lucky was confused. Fanny gave an excited yelp and tackled Lucky playfully.

I’m the assassin. Now go run before I get you! Fanny said as she sprinted around the dog run. Lucky huffed happily and chased after his new best friend.

“She stayed with my mother in Russia. I had just gotten her after I came back from the Blip. Then I was assigned to kill Barton so I asked my mother to watch Fanny. But now I’m glad she’s with me. It does get a little lonely.” Yelena said quietly. Kate nodded.

“They seem to like each other.” Kate said as she nodded to the running puppies. Yelena hummed in agreement.

“Fanny needs friends.” Yelena said suddenly. Kate agreed.

“Lucky has a few here but I bet he would be honored to be best friends with Fanny.” Kate said. Her tone suggested they weren’t talking about Fanny and Lucky anymore.

“I think Fanny might like that. Friends are good to have.” Yelena said as gave a small side eye look at Kate. The two women relaxed into the bench, each slightly thrilled to explore the new friendship happening between them…their dogs…Between their dogs.

Kate and Yelena continued to meet up at the dog run which made Lucky very happy. Fanny was still standoffish, like her Master but she noticed her Master becoming fond of Lucky’s Master. Her Master would talk about Kate Bishop in warm tones and she noticed her Master’s scent would mellow when she was around the brunette and golden retriever. If her Master felt that Lucky’s Master could be trusted, Fanny could try and be Lucky’s friend.

Lucky was practically pulling Kate to the dog run.

“Hey, Pizza Dog…slow down. We are going to stop by the coffee shop and pick up a treat for Yelena. Are you cool with that?” Kate asked her dog. Lucky slowed down as he considered his human’s words.

Maybe I should pick up a treat for Fanny! I want her to be my best friend Lucky said to himself and allowed Kate to take the lead. They stopped quickly to get coffee. Kate didn’t really know Yelena’s preference but she stuck with a basic black dark roast. Yelena probably wasn’t able to obtain fancy coffee while on missions and probably drank it black. Clint once said it was the only way to guarantee to drink coffee while you were on the run. Kate decided she would try the coffee black. You know…in case she ever finds herself in desperate times. She took a sip and was pleasantly surprised by the bold flavor.

Armed with coffees, Kate and Lucky made their way to the dog run. Lucky sniffed around for a gift to give Fanny. When he saw it, he practically ran for it. There in the grass was a perfect stick. A stick meant for fetching. A stick that would show the other dogs who was boss. Yes…this stick was meant for Fanny. She alone deserved to wield this stick. He gently took it between his teeth and trotted slowly with Kate to the entrance of the dog run. Normally he would zoom off once Kate unhooked him, but today he took his time. He did not want to ruin the stick. He gingerly made his way around Lenny who was zooming in nervous excitement.

Nice stick, Lucky! Lenny said excitedly

Not going to lie, I agree with the little one on that statement Butch said. Lenny huffed at Butch.

 Devin trotted alongside Lucky

Who are you giving that stick to? Devin said knowingly

It’s for Fanny! My human got her human coffee. They are becoming really good friends and I want a best friend. You’re like my Hawkeye. Teaching me the ways of being a hero’s dog. I want a best friend like my human. Lucky explained. Devin’s chest grumbled with pride. He gave a swift lick to the golden retriever's head.

Go on and get yourself a best friend, Luck.

Lucky made his way to Fanny who was rolling on the grass.

Hi Fanny! Lucky mumbled out around the stick. Fanny looked up at Lucky.

You’re upside down… Fanny stated dryly.

I got you something Lucky said as he watched Fanny stand back up. He dropped the stick in front of Fanny.

You got me a stick? Fanny asked quietly.

It’s the best stick ever. All the other dogs are really jealous. I thought you would like it. Lucky said as he pawed at the stick. Fanny leaned down and sniffed at it. She took it in her mouth and shook her head with it.

It is a nice stick. Thank you Lucky. Why did you get me a stick though? Fanny asked as she played with the stick

I want you to be my best friend. Like our humans. My human got your human coffee so I thought I’d get you a stick! Lucky explained as he watched in joy at Fanny playing with the stick. She looked at their masters and took in Lucky’s words. She noticed how at ease her master was with Lucky’s master.

I’d like to be your best friend, Lucky. I accept. Fanny said and darted off causing Lucky to race after her.

I have a best friend!!!! Lucky shouted to the entire dog run.

Kate came up behind Yelena, holding out the coffee cup.

“I got you a present” Kate said as Yelena turned to her. Yelena’s face lit up.

“What is it?” Yelena asked as she sniffed the cup.

“Black coffee. It’s a dark roast. I wasn’t sure how you took your coffee but Clint once explained that luxuries like milk, flavoring and sweeteners aren’t easily found on missions. I got the same and it’s actually pretty damn good.” Kate said as she took a deep sip from her cup. Yelena smiled and drank hers. She let out a small moan in appreciation.

“Thank you. It is very good” Yelena said as she nodded toward “their bench”. The two women settled on the bench, inching close together as the weather still held a sharp chill to it. They sat in silence, watching Lucky and Fanny play with the stick.

“I was wondering if I could ask you something.” Kate said, breaking their comfortable silence.

“You can always ask me something. I may not always answer” Yelena said with a smirk. Kate chuckled.

“True. Okay…so I know you aren’t employed right now. I’m not saying join SHIELD with me…but maybe you could be a freelancer? The R&D department is going smoothly and the SHIELD heads are ready to let me start working in the field. I thought maybe you could back me up in a few missions? We can kinda be like Clint and your sister?” Kate said hoping she didn’t ruin the blossoming friendship with her last question.

Yelena sat on the bench, considering Kate’s offer. On one hand, she didn’t like to be tied down to another organization. Natasha didn’t regret her decision to be SHIELD but she did struggle with the tasks she needed to overcome in order to be fully vetted for a position. While Kate’s obsession with Hawkeye was still annoying, she could see the parallels of the new Hawkeye and a Black Widow pairing up. Plus, she was getting kinda bored.

“What’s the pay?” Yelena asked. Kate looked up in surprise.

“Pay? You…you would be willing to back me up?” Kate asked in disbelief.

“I don’t see anything wrong with your reasoning. Yes, I do not wish to join SHIELD. What they did to Natasha…I would not want to endure. As much as your Hawkeye obsession is juvenile, my sister was your mentor’s best friend and partner. It would only be logical for me to protect you while on missions.” Yelena explained. Kate smiled before frowning.

“Hey! I can fight on my own. I just thought the two of us would make a better team.” Kate said sullenly. Yelena chuckled.

“Yes.” Yelena simply said.

“Yes? Like…for real yes??? YES???” Kate exclaimed.

“Yes Kate. I will be honored to fight alongside the new Hawkling.” Yelena said with an amused smile.

“It’s Hawkeye.” Kate defended with a grin.

“Hawkling, Hawkeye…whichever. As long as I get a commission, I will be glad to use my skills for good.” Yelena said as she drank her coffee. Kate turned her body and silently gave a fist pump.

***

Yelena and Kate dog run meets eventually turned into movie and dinner nights.

“What do you mean you’ve never seen A League of Their Own? ” Kate gasped. Yelena rolled her eyes.

“I’m sorry, Kate Bishop. Between being sent to the Red Room and being chemically brainwashed I forgot to make time to watch movies” Yelena deadpanned. Kate had the decency to blush. Yelena knew she was being harsh on the other woman. Kate had been nothing but kind and really she had been working on not blurting out everything that ran through her mind. Yelena found the quirk to be a little endearing.

“I’m sorry, Yelena. I didn’t mean that. I can go if you want. Lucky looks tired” Kate said with a sad look on her face. She got up from the bench and went to call Lucky who was holding court with his group of friends.

“Kate! I’m sorry. I know you didn’t mean it. It’s just…I never had a real friend before so my witty but sarcastic remarks tend to be a defense mechanism.” Yelena said as she reached to entwine their fingers together. Kate stared at their linked hands, fighting a blush. She quietly nodded and sat back down. The two women kept holding hands in silence.

Fanny! Fanny! Look! Our humans are holding hands! Lucky exclaimed as he zeroed in on Kate and Yelena. Fanny was sniffing the ground when she looked over.

So what if our Masters are holding hands? Does it mean anything? Maybe your Master fell or something. She is very clumsy Fanny retorted. Butch the Poodle laughed.

I like this Akita. She’s spunky Butch said as she nudged Fanny.

Humans holding hands mean they like each other. My humans hold hands all the time Lenny said excitedly. His owners was a wonderful gay couple who spoiled him rotten.

Of course my human likes Fanny’s human! She is so nice! Lucky barked happily. His tongue hung out of his mouth.

Not like that Lucky. Like…when you smell a really good looking dog and you just need to make puppies with them Lenny said. The rest of the dogs tilted their head at the small terrier.

Are you telling me this tiny thing is pulling more dogs than any of us? Butch said in a flat tone.

Didn’t you get fixed? Devin asked as he rolled his eyes.

We shall never speak of that, Devin. But seriously, Lucky. Look at my dads! They are in love and they had this big party last year. Everyone dressed up really nice and I got to wear a tuxedo and carry the rings Lenny said as he spun around in circles. Lucky looked at his human and Fanny’s human. They did seem to really like each other.

In fact, that morning he saw his human hyping herself up in the mirror. He noticed that she was taking more time getting ready to go to the dog run. It was annoying but now it was making sense.

They do not like each other like that Fanny said quietly.
I think my human likes your human like that Lucky said as he nudged Fanny. She let out a small huff and walked away from the group. Lucky whined and followed.

What’s wrong Fanny? Would it be bad if our humans liked each other like Lenny’s dads? We could eventually live together! Lucky said excitedly. Fanny rolled her eyes.

My Master will never like anyone. She’s been through too much. Too much pain. She says it all the time. She always says ‘no one could ever love a monster like me’ Fanny confessed. Lucky huffed out in defiance.

That’s stupid, Fanny. Your human is one of the nicest humans I know. I mean besides my human. She always has treats for us and she always gives good hugs! I know because my human talks about getting hugs from your human. Lucky said as he sat next to Fanny who continued to watch Yelena and Kate sitting in comfortable silence, still holding hands. She thought hard about the scene. She did notice her Master talking more and more about Lucky’s Master. She noticed how excited her Master was every time they went to meet Lucky and his Master. Well, Fanny’s Master was extremely proficient at concealing her body language but Fanny had been noticing new scents surrounding her master whenever they were going to see Lucky.

Her master was always warm to her but frosty to outsiders. Fanny considered Lenny’s story. Would it be so bad for Lucky and her Masters to be more than friends? Maybe…be a family ?

I’m going to regret saying this, Lucky, but I think it might be a good thing if our Masters became a couple. Fanny said, resigning to the new development. Lucky barked happily

That’s the spirit! We gotta help them figure it out. My human is notorious for being extremely awkward around people she admires and loves Lucky joked. Fanny huffed in happy agreement.

No truer words have been said, Lucky Fanny joked back.

And that’s how Fanny and Lucky joined forces to get Kate and Yelena together.

***

Yelena knocked on Kate’s apartment door as Fanny sat obediently at Yelena’s side. The door opened, showing a brightly smiling Kate.

“Figure you use the door for once?” Kate jested. Yelena rolled her eyes and let Fanny in before her. Kate took Yelena’s jacket and hung it. They stood awkwardly in the hallway before Yelena pulled Kate into a rushed hug. Kate’s face showed surprise but she recovered as she warmly hugged back.

“I ordered food from the Russian restaurant around the corner. I heard it was good and the reviews back it up. I never really had Russian food. Well…once when my mom was negotiating with a Russian tech giant…but that was probably an underground negotiation…I’m going to shut up now” Kate babbled. Yelena laughed deeply.

“Oh Kate Bishop. Never change. I look forward to dinner. I brought you this” Yelena went to her coat and pulled out a small bow and arrow pin. Kate smiled brightly as she looked at the pin.

“I saw it and thought of you. Friends give friends gifts, right? That is an American custom?” Yelena said nervously. She was lying through her teeth. Friends give friends presents all the time in Russia, hell it’s a worldwide custom. Kate picked up on the nervous energy from Yelena but decided to play along.

“Yep. Us greedy Americans, all about materialistic things. It’s really cool, Yelena. Thank you.” Kate said with a smirk. She went over to her jacket and pinned it to her lapel.

“See? It looks great on it. Plus now I have a little bit of you everywhere I go.” Kate said softly. Yelena beamed before catching herself and coughed to cover up her shit-eating grin. She put her hands on her stomach.

“I’m so hungry…you ready to eat? Yeah? My daddy really does say to eat after much exercise. It makes you strong.” Yelena changed topics as she walked towards the kitchen, the familiar smell of Russian comfort food warming her insides. Kate smirked and chuckled to herself regarding the blonde assassin’s behavior.

“Yeah. Let’s eat. Then we watch A League of Their Own .” Kate said as she walked behind Yelena to grab dishes. Kate nodded to the cabinet near Yelena.

“I picked up actual dog food today since I knew Fanny was coming over. You know her owner is really strict about her diet.” Kate jested as she watched Yelena roll her eyes.

“Ha. Ha. You’re so funny, Kate Bishop” Yelena said dryly. She scooped two portions for Lucky and Fanny before making her way to the small kitchen island.

***

Dinner was an absolute hit. Kate pumped her fist in celebration inside her head, because actually doing that in front of Yelena would be so uncool. They grabbed drinks for the movie and retired to the couch. They sat next to each other, but not close enough for Lucky and Fanny.

I one time saw in a movie the guy pretended to stretch his arm and yawn before putting it around the girl at the movies Lucky said determinedly.

They’re not close enough to do that. Fanny complained. The two dogs had followed their humans to the living room and waited patiently for Kate to finish setting up the movie. Fanny wagged her tail.

I got an idea! Follow my lead Fanny said to Lucky. Lucky huffed in agreement. Once Kate was settled back next to Yelena, Fanny jumped up to Yelena’s free side and got comfy. Lucky saw what Fanny was doing and followed suit.

“Guys! It’s a bit crowded up here” Kate said as she chuckled. The two big dogs had pushed her and the blonde closer together. “I can try and get Lucky down. Fanny can stay on the couch if you want. You are both our guests” Kate said shyly. Lucky glanced at Fanny in desperation. He began to whine pathetically and put on his best puppy eye. Kate’s heart melted at the one eyed dog and made the mistake of looking over at Yelena. The blonde’s face matched Kate’s. The adorable golden retriever gave himself an internal high five as Fanny huffed in amusement.

“It is okay, Kate Bishop. It’s not uncomfortable. It’s cozy. We all stay on the couch.” Yelena said. Kate grinned to herself and allowed herself to relax against the couch. Her thigh were flushed against Yelena’s and she was warm.

As the movie progressed, Yelena’s hand rested on top of Kate’s leg and began to trace mindless patterns without realizing what she was doing.

Fanny! My human going to do the move Lucky whispered to the other dog.

Shh…I want to see if the Dottie lady smacks the kid around in the car Fanny mumbled, enthralled with the movie.  Kate glanced over at Yelena and saw the blonde was fixated on the movie. She slowly reached her arm up above her head and let out a little yawn. Lucky practically leaned forward. Even Fanny followed the movement of Kate’s arm.

This is it! Lucky cheered.

Kate’s arm slowly descended down.

Just a little further, around the shoulders Lucky directed. Both dogs' eyes were trained on Kate’s arm. Kate pulled her arm over her chest and crossed them as she sleepily leaned her head against the back of the couch. Yelena’s hand had been soothing Kate so much that she was falling asleep.

Oh that was weak. Fanny sighed. Lucky let out a small whine in embarrassment for his human.

Dude, she had it. Lucky sighed and settled back into the couch.

***

Weekly dinners and movies became a regular occurrence but it also didn’t take long for Kate and Yelena to begin going on missions together. They would be debriefed at the SHIELD headquarters and then continue their planning at Kate’s apartment since it was better armed than Yelena’s Airbnb. Lucky and Fanny would hang out while Kate and Yelena would run around the city, taking out bad guys. Most of the time, the two came back sweaty and achy but nothing ever too serious. Until one night….

***

Fanny and Lucky were curled up by the window, waiting for Kate and Yelena to return from their mission. Fanny was the first one to pop her head up in distress.

“Lucky… ” Fanny’s voice had a slight tremor to it. The golden retriever lifted his nose and took in the scent of sweat, nerves and… blood?

“That’s not my human’s…” Lucky said quietly. Fanny became tense as she got up from her spot and sprinted to the door.

“No…it’s my human’s” Fanny said as she frantically paced at the door, wishing that she had opposable thumbs. Lucky sprinted over and tried to soothe the Akita.

“It’s going to be fine. My human knows how to take care of injuries. Your human has taught her so much in the past few months and before that, the Hawkeye taught her.” Lucky said as he butted his head against his friend. Fanny remained on high alert as they heard rushing but heavy footsteps up the stairs. The door burst open causing the dogs to back up.

“Okay kids, stay back. Fanny, your mom is fine. She’s fine” Kate stammered. Fanny could practically smell the fear and distress of Lucky’s owner.

“It’s okay, Fanny. Sit” Yelena mumbled from her position on Kate. She had an arm slung around Kate’s shoulders with a pained grimace on her face. Her free hand covered her stomach and was stained red. Fanny wanted to obey her Master’s command but when Kate laid Yelena down on the couch and Fanny saw the amount of blood flowing out of her Master, the Akita let out a pained whine. Kate’s eyes widened.

“Hey…Hey Fanny. Shh baby girl, it’s going to be okay. Keep your mom company while I get the first aid kit. Lucky, stay with them.” Kate said as she cooed to the outwardly nervous puppy. Fanny rushed to her Master’s side, nudging her head into Yelena’s free hand.

“She’s hurt, Lucky. She’s really hurt.” Fanny said in shock. Lucky bumped his head against Fanny’s shoulder.

“She’s going to be okay. She has to. My human won’t let anything happen to her.” Lucky said quietly.

“She let my human get hurt” Fanny let out a deep growl. Lucky backed off.

“Shh Fanny. It’s okay. Mommy got into a little scuffle. I wasn’t paying attention and this идиот got me with a knife. Lucky’s mom was awesome though. She took the guy out with a trick arrow. He is still glued to the floor waiting for SHIELD to take him. His face has seen better days, though.” Yelena said quietly with a smirk. “Kate pummeled his face until he passed out. I think he pissed himself. It was so funny.” Yelena said with a chuckle before groaning in pain. She petted her akita’s head and then the golden retriever’s head.

“Don’t let your mom know that I thought she was cool. I’d never hear the end of it.” Yelena said as she made herself comfortable on the couch.

“You thought I was cool?” Kate said quietly from the stairs. Yelena rolled her eyes.

“Don’t let it get to your head, but yes. You were really cool. Now grab the bottle of vodka from the freezer.” Yelena said as she stretched out her arm. Kate frowned.

“I have rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide.” Kate held up the two bottles. Yelena snorted.

“Not for that, hawkling. I’m about to let you stitch me up. Even when Natasha was putting a simple bandage on me…which she clearly did not know how to do…I had a bottle of beer.” Yelena stated. Kate grinned softly and went to grab the bottle of vodka.

Lucky and Fanny watched the exchange quietly. Fanny’s nerves calmed a little as she listened to her master’s story and voice.

“See…I told you my human would protect yours.” Lucky said quietly. Fanny huffed quietly.

“If you tell any of the other dogs at the dog run what happened here tonight, I will steal every piece of pizza meant for you.” The Akita stared dangerously into Lucky’s eyes. Lucky’s jaw dropped into a goofy grin.

“Deal.” Lucky said as he licked Fanny’s head. The akita narrowed her eyes but Lucky could see and smell the playfulness off Fanny. He decided to push his luck further.

“You called her your human. I think that’s the first time I heard you refer to her as that.” Lucky said as he sat next to Fanny.

“I…yes. You’re right. I never realized how much I love her until tonight. Growing up in Russia, her mother taught me commands and to obey. They were my Masters. Like my human, I was taught to obey and protect. Never let my emotions take over.” Fanny confessed as she laid down. Lucky fell into a similar position.

“I think it’s not just you who realized there’s more to life and it's okay to feel things.” Lucky said as he nodded to the two women on the couch. Yelena had pulled down the top of her battle suit and took off the bloody tank underneath. Clad only in her sports bra, Yelena took a swig of vodka before succumbing to Kate’s ministrations. The two puppies watched as Kate worked efficiently but gently and how Yelena’s face seemed to smooth out as she let go of the stress of the night . The two dogs could smell the bond of trust strengthening between their two humans.

“There you go. Do you feel okay?” Kate asked quietly as she turned to put her kit away. Yelena’s hand fell to Kate’s thigh.

“Thank you, Kate Bishop. Truly.” Yelena said seriously, staring into the bright blue eyes of the archer. The brunette gave a lopsided grin and nodded.

“Anytime.” Kate responded and without thinking, leaned forward and placed a small kiss on Yelena’s forehead. Kate pulled back suddenly as a blush formed on both women’s faces.

“Um…I’m going to put this back. What do you say we order Chinese and watch some Sex and the City ?” Kate said as she stood up quickly, looking everywhere but at the blonde who remained frozen on the couch. Yelena took a second before responding with a firm nod.

“Yes…that sounds safe…I mean great. Great!” Yelena said quickly.

Fanny and Lucky watched from their position at the extremely awkward but hilarious interaction.

“I’m not saying you’re right, Pizza Dog…” Fanny said, amused.

“It’s going to happen. Maybe not tonight…but it will. I know these things.” Lucky puffed out his chest before wagging his tail excitedly.

“Fanny! We’re getting Chinese!!!” Fanny rolled her eyes but huffed out a happy sound, her own tail beginning to wag.

Kate checked on Yelena in the weeks after their mission. She volunteered to take Fanny and Lucky to the dog run while Yelena recovered from her injury. Yelena at first was hesitant, afraid to show any discomfort but shortly after Kate brought her some Borscht from Coney Island, Yelena relaxed around Kate. She let Kate dote on her, something she never thought she would allow anyone to do. Yelena had always fended for herself, especially after her childhood was taken away. The last time anyone cared or protected her was…Natasha.

Kate called Yelena after she left her meeting with the R&D department of SHIELD. She was going to pick up Lucky and see if Yelena wanted to hang. Her first phone call went to voicemail. At first, Kate didn’t think anything of it. She figured Yelena was in the shower or something. She called again when she reached her apartment. It went to voicemail again. Kate sent a text as she tidied up the apartment and debated on what to do for dinner. She started dabbling in home cooking after Yelena’s enthusiasm for cooking rubbed off on her. When she didn’t receive a response in 20 minutes, Kate began to worry. She called Yelena one more time and when it immediately went to voicemail, Kate panicked.

“What if she’s dead, Lucky?” Kate said as her face paled. Lucky felt the nervous energy from his human and immediately went to comfort her. Kate slid to the floor, before grabbing a hold of Lucky’s head between her hands. Lucky noticed tears falling down Kate’s face and gently licked at them.

“We should go to her place. Right?” Kate asked her best furry friend. Lucky tilted his head, trying to communicate with his human.

“I wish you were able to talk to me. Or read my mind like the Scarlet Witch.” Kate said as she smirked to herself. Lucky barked happily and went to retrieve Kate’s phone. He dropped it in her lap.

“She’s not answering.” Kate said. Lucky nudged the phone again.

“Who else can I call…Oh!” Kate said as she shot up in excitement. She quickly brought up Clint’s contact and dialed his number.

“Kate? This better be important…I really don’t need to hear about your branding ideas.” Clint said in lieu of greeting.

“This is important. Yelena won’t answer my phone calls or texts. I’m worried.” Kate rushed out. Clint sighed.

“Kate…” Clint said sadly.

“I’m really freaking worried! She got hurt a few weeks ago and I’m shocked she’s let me take care of her but what if she got hurt again? Should I go to her place? I mean you worked with a Black Widow…what are the chances of me surviving a surprise visit?” Kate rambled out.

“Kate. Relax. She’s not hurt...well at least not physically. She would come to you if she was physically hurt. Kate…it’s complicated but it’s probably emotional pain” Clint sighed. Kate frowned.

“Emotional?” Kate questioned. She heard a small hitch in his voice.

“It’s…it’s Nat’s birthday.” Clint said solemnly. Kate froze and her heart stopped.

“Oh fuck. I…I thought they didn’t know their birthdays?” Kate asked quietly.

“Nat picked a date because SHIELD needed one on record. I know Yelena and Nat kept in touch after they took out the Red Room. She must’ve told Yelena. We always did a small celebration at the farm and Nat would always bring a few packages from her family.” Clint explained. Kate nodded even though Clint couldn’t see her.

“I’m going to her.” Kate said in determination.

“Be careful, Kate. If she is anything like Nat, she shows her grief through anger. Just…be patient with her. Speak calmly. Don’t touch her unless she initiates. I can’t imagine what emotions are going through her.” Clint advised softly.

“I will be careful. She shouldn’t be alone…not like this.” Kate said as she stood up. She grabbed Lucky’s leash.

“You have feelings for her, don’t you?” Clint asked quietly. Kate gripped her phone tighter. She had kept a lid on her emotions so carefully. She looked down at Lucky.

Say yes! I know you do. You can’t hide it from me, Lucky said as he wagged his tail.

“Yes. I have very…strong feelings for Yelena. I don’t know her feelings for me, but I know she cares and trusts me. She wouldn’t show pain in front of me if she didn’t.” Kate said confidently.

“Go to her. Call me if you need anything.” Clint said before he hung up. Kate sighed deeply. She grabbed a sweatshirt since it was warming up outside and packed a quick bag of clothes. If Yelena let her in, Kate would refuse to leave Yelena’s side.

“Let’s go, bud. Our girls need us” Kate said in a determined voice.

Yes! Our girls need us Lucky agreed and trotted in front of Kate.

***

Kate had only been to Yelena’s Airbnb a few times. Usually it was a quick pit stop to grab additional weapons. Kate had only been inside once. Usually, Yelena made her wait outside the building. The one time she let Kate in was because Yelena needed help when she planned a surprise picnic for them and the puppies. Well...picnic was a loose term. It was freezing but Yelena had set up a space heater on the rooftop of her building and they had dinner in the cold. Kate loved every second of it.

Kate stopped off at Yelena’s favorite Russian deli and picked up the staples, a box of Mac & Cheese and a small surprise that may or may not go over well. She wasn’t sure how dire the situation was. Best be prepared. Kate and Lucky made it to the apartment building where Yelena was staying.

“Okay boy. Here goes nothing. For our girls” Kate mumbled. Lucky gave a quiet bark in agreement.

For our girls! Lucky said. He looked up as Kate pressed the buzzer.

“Hello?” Yelena’s tired voice sounded tiny on the intercom.

“It’s me.” Kate said.

“Go away, Kate Bishop” Yelena grumbled.

“No. I know what today is. She wouldn’t want you alone. Now let me in or else Lucky and I will break in.” Kate threatened.

“Still so funny Kate Bishop. Still so annoying.” Yelena chuckled dryly. Kate heard the line go silent. Those seconds that Kate waited were the longest few seconds of her life. When the sound of buzzing rang through the air, big grins erupted on Kate and Lucky.

Kate took the stairs two at a time, while Lucky sprinted to Yelena’s door. He jumped up onto the door, scratching at it. He heard Fanny on the other side.

Lucky? Fanny asked

We’re here to help your human. Lucky said in a gentle voice.

She’s coming. She’s….not herself. I don’t know what to do. Fanny sounded insecure.

Don’t worry. We’re here now. We will protect both of you Lucky promised.

The door opened as Kate got to the door. Yelena only opened it a bit and Lucky pushed his way inside, bumping his head into Yelena. He then circled to Fanny and bumped his head in greeting to the Akita. Kate followed Lucky inside. It was dark, only the kitchen stove light was on.

“Oh, Yelena” Kate said once she took a look at the blonde. She had never seen Yelena look so lost or young or innocent. She wanted so badly to grab the other woman into a hug but remembered Clint’s words.

“Save your pity, Hawkling. I’m fine” Yelena said as her voice cracked on the word fine . Kate nodded as she went to put her bag down by the couch and started to sort out her groceries.

“Have you eaten today?” Kate asked quietly. Fanny trotted over to Kate and licked her hand in appreciation.

“Does it matter?” Yelena huffed out as she plopped back on the couch. Kate looked around, expecting a much worse situation. She expected broken objects, bullet holes in the wall, multiple bottles of vodka. Instead, she saw a pillow and blanket on the couch and a very full bottle of vodka.

“I got a few sandwiches from that Russian Deli. I also have Mac & Cheese. I also…” Kate trailed off quietly. Yelena looked at Kate with interest. Kate pulled out a box of Betty Crocker vanilla cake mix and a tub of vanilla frosting. Yelena’s lip trembled as fresh tears began to fall.

“We don’t have to. I just thought…maybe we could celebrate her anyway. I used to do it on my dad’s birthday. I only got a few birthdays with him but making cupcakes or a cake made me feel close to him despite him not being here.” Kate said sadly.

“I only got so many birthdays with her.” Yelena said in a strained voice as she wiped at her face.

“I don’t even remember the date we celebrated in Ohio but she did tell me her new birthday after we destroyed the Red Room. Even though we were all never together in one place after that mission, we vowed to send cards or presents on each of our birthdays. We were trying to make up for lost time.” Yelena said quietly. She sounded so small to Kate, whose heart was beginning to shatter for Yelena’s pain. Kate pushed the cake supplies to the side and leaned forward on the island.

“I can promise you this. You will never have to celebrate alone again. Any of your birthdays. I don’t even know your parents but I will always celebrate their birthdays with you. And Christmas. And New Year’s. And Halloween. Hell, even Flag Day.” Kate exclaimed. Yelena laughed as she wiped away her tears. Kate’s face lit up at Yelena’s laughter.

Score one for my human Lucky said proudly. Fanny nudged his shoulder playfully.

She is a good mate for my human. Fanny said quietly.

Your human is a good mate for my human too. Lucky agreed.

Once Yelena’s laughter quieted, she sighed deeply and frowned.

“You cannot promise me all that. It is impossible. Besides, why would you want any of that? My parents are crazy. My life is crazy” Yelena said. Kate shook her head and slowly made her way to the couch. She saw Yelena tense a bit but she offered a kind smile and got to her knees just in front of Yelena, making sure not to touch the other woman unless she wanted to.

“You’re right. Maybe I shouldn’t promise that. But I will promise to do my utmost best to be there for every holiday and birthday. As long as you will have me. I will…” Kate trailed off. Clint’s voice rattled through her head. Be patient with her. Telling the Black Widow that she loved her probably wouldn’t be the best option at that moment, especially with all their emotions running high. Yelena looked at Kate, waiting for her to finish the sentence. Kate ducked her head.

“I care about you. Very much. You and Fanny have been a godsend to me and Lucky these past few months. When you didn’t answer my calls or texts, I freaked out. I thought something happened to you and that thought…it scared the shit out of me. I know you are used to dealing with everything on your own and compartmentalizing your emotions. But I want…no…I need you to know. I will always be here. I’m not going anywhere.” Kate said as she kept her gaze trained to Yelena’s. I love you Kate tried to say with her expressions.

Yelena remained still, locked in a staring contest with the archer.

Hug her Сука Fanny let out a tiny whine.

I don’t know what that means, but yes! Hug her! Lucky let out a similar whine. Both women turned their heads towards the two puppies who were giving the most adorable puppy eyes.

“You three will be the death of me” Yelena said softly as she motioned to Kate to come sit next to her. Kate stood up quickly and made her way to the cushion next to Yelena. She let out a gasp of surprise when Yelena draped Kate’s arm around her shoulder and rested her head against Kate’s chest, listening to the quickening heartbeat of the younger woman.

“You are real, aren’t you, детка” Yelena whispered. Kate’s breath stuttered a bit.

“I am. I am as real as you are. We are real.” Kate whispered and placed a small kiss on the blonde’s head.

“Don’t leave.” Yelena whimpered as she let her tears fall again. Kate cooed reassuring words as she held the blonde in her arms.

“We won’t leave. You and Fanny are our girls. Let it out, Yelena. You’re safe. I got you.” Kate whispered, blinking away her own tears.

***

Kate held Yelena as she fell into a restless slumber. Fanny and Lucky laid at their feet, ready to assist their humans at any second.

She sounds so sad Fanny sighed which came out as an adorable huff.

My human will take care of her. From what I heard, your human lost someone very important to her. Today is her birthday Lucky explained. He let out a yawn.

Birthday? What is that? Fanny asked, also letting out a yawn

Oh, it’s so cool! You get gifts and cake and pizza. You also get to sing a song. We did it when we were at Hawkeye’s home. Lucky explained as he stretched his long body before settling back on the floor.

That does sound pretty cool. We didn’t do that in Russia. Fanny said as she also repositioned herself.

I want to go to the dog run on my birthday. I’ll share all my treats with Devin and Lenny. Even Butch! Lucky yawned again.

What about me? Fanny asked quietly. Lucky nudged his head against Fanny’s body.

That’s a given. You’re my best friend. It wouldn’t be a real birthday if my family wasn’t with me Lucky said. Fanny lifted her head slightly.

I’m your family? She asked.

Yes. As my human said, you and your human are our girls. That means we’re family. You’re stuck with me for life. Lucky grinned and cuddled up to Fanny. She let out a disgusted whine but returned the cuddle.

I guess there could be worse things in life Fanny said sleepily.

Kate was watching Yelena sleep. She felt wired and refused to let the blonde out of her sight. She tried her best to keep the blonde relaxed but she could see Yelena’s body trembling from nightmares. Yelena started whimpering in Russian in sleep. Kate held her a little bit tighter, not wanting to hold too tight.

“Yelena, honey. It’s a dream. You’re safe with me.” Kate whispered softly. Yelena’s body began to quake as more Russian came streaming out her mouth.

“Yelena? Baby?” Kate asked, fearing what was going on in Yelena’s head. Suddenly Yelena’s eyes opened and she straddled Kate and thrusted an arm against her throat, cutting off Kate’s oxygen supply.

Lucky and Fanny jumped up in shock.

What… Lucky said before growling. Fanny nudged the golden retriever.

It’s okay. She won’t hurt your human Fanny pleaded, trying to calm down the often calm dog.

She has her arm across her throat, Fanny, my human can’t breathe Lucky growled again

“Lucky, relax. It’s okay. Everyone is okay.” Kate choked out in a surprising calm manner. She never let her eyes leave Yelena’s. She waited until Yelena’s eyes focused and stayed still. Yelena gasped for air as she began to come back into her mind.

“What…shit. I’m so sorry Kate…I…I…did I hurt you? Please don’t say I hurt you…” Yelena began to panic. Her hands flew everywhere on Kate’s face and chest, checking to make sure she didn’t hurt the archer. Kate gently grabbed Yelena’s flying hands and brought them close to her mouth and kissed them.

“No, Yelena. You didn’t hurt me. We are all okay.” Kate stated seriously. Yelena stilled and calmed her breathing.

“You should leave us. I don’t want to hurt you.” Yelena said sadly, tears burning her eyes.

“Leaving you would hurt me the most, Yelena. I told you. I am not leaving you. Lucky isn’t leaving you.” Kate said softly, rubbing her thumbs across their entwined hands.

“What?” Yelena gasped out.

“What what, Yelena?” Kate asked.

“What did I deserve you? I have so much red in my ledger. What did I do to deserve someone’s…” Yelena stopped herself. She felt Kate’s breathing pick up.

“You deserve everything despite your past. I know you aren’t proud of your past but it has made you into the woman you are today. And that’s a good thing because I should be asking what I did to deserve your…friendship…” Kate corrected herself at the last minute. Yelena’s hitched breath didn’t escape Kate but she chose not to harp on it.

Are they going to kiss?   Fanny asked

I think they might! Lucky said excitedly, his protective stance now loose.

The two women sat on the couch, leaning in slowly. Yelena’s eyes dropped to Kate’s lips and she felt Kate’s rapid heartbeat. She was so close…Yelena licked her lips and closed her eyes in anticipation. Kate on the other was having the biggest internal gay panic. She wanted to kiss the blonde… so badly …but she was still afraid that it would freak out the woman. Kate slowly removed her hands from Yelena and placed them on both sides of Yelena’s face and tilted the blonde’s head down and pressed a long kiss to her forehead.

That’s weak Fanny huffed

She had her! Lucky put his paw over his eyes in embarrassment.

Yelena stilled, her emotions swirling in her chest. Did Kate not want to kiss her? Was she misreading the signals?

“Don’t take this the wrong way, Yelena. I…really want to. But we should talk before that. I can’t…and if you…” Kate sighed and looked to the side. Yelena looked down in disappointment but understood Kate’s point. Their emotions are running very high and Yelena has barely come to terms with her feelings about Natasha’s birthday let alone her confusing feelings about the archer. Yelena smiled when she realized it wasn’t a hard no. She nodded and placed a kiss on Kate’s cheek.

“You are too precious, детка” Yelena said as she slid off Kate’s lap. She stretched and walked towards the counter.

“What do you say, Kate Bishop? Can we make a cake worthy for the Black Widow?” Yelena held the cake mix box up. Kate grinned and stood up slowly.

“Totally. While it bakes we can eat those sandwiches. Then we can watch a movie?” Kate asked.

“That sounds like a really good night.” Yelena nodded in agreement.

“I packed to stay overnight, if that is okay with you? I can sleep on the couch. I just didn’t want you to be alone.” Kate said as she nervously scratched the back of her neck. Yelena grinned at the adorable nervous tension radiating off the brunette.

“Thank you.” Yelena said quietly and gave a small smile when she saw Kate’s face break out into a large grin.

We gotta get them to kiss Lucky said as he watched the interaction

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with you, but yeah. They need to kiss Fanny said

My human is *not* sleeping on the couch tonight. There wouldn’t be enough room Lucky pointed out

You’re gonna sleep on the couch? Fanny asked in disbelief.

That looks like the most comfy couch EVER Lucky panted.

I can’t argue with you. Okay. Yes. They must kiss and sleep together tonight Fanny summarized

Well…like sleep, cuddling sleep…not like…copulating sleep Lucky rambled. The two dogs shuddered at the mental image of their humans getting it on

Yep. No inappropriate behavior from either of our humans Fanny rushed out

If they ever do that….I hope they let us watch dog videos on YouTube…really loudly Lucky said as he trotted over for dinner.

I agree. Or maybe Snapped. I like Snapped Fanny said as she followed her friend.

***

Making the cake was easy. Waiting for it to cool so they could ice it was the pain in the ass. Kate saw the childlike glee on Yelena’s face when the cake came out of the oven.

“We need to let it cool. Why don’t we eat the sandwiches and pick out a movie? I can feed the dogs while you pick” Kate suggested as she moved to the dog cabinet she just found out about today. She took a scoop of kibble for both Lucky and Fanny who began eating with gusto.

Oh. My. God. This is soooo good Lucky moaned.

This is what we’re supposed to eat. Not that human crap Fanny mumbled as she guzzled at her water bowl

Hey! Pizza is good but this is very delicious! Lucky argued. Fanny rolled her eyes and continued eating.

“Kate? Have you ever seen this movie?” Yelena asked as she pulled up the streaming service. Kate walked over to see what Yelena was asking about. She grinned.

“That is my favorite Disney movie. The Little Mermaid was the movie I begged my parents to watch day after day after day.” Kate said with a smile.

“Then I wish to watch this one.” Yelena said with determination and pressed play. Kate smiled and sat next to the blonde, ready to indulge in nostalgia.

They ate silently as the colors of the cartoon filled the screen and the lively music made Kate bop in her seat. Yelena couldn’t help but crack a smile as she watched the brunette dance as a crab sang about living in the water. As the movie got darker, Yelena frowned.

“I don’t think this sea witch is a villain.” Yelena said randomly. Kate lifted her head off the couch and stared at Yelena.

“Dude, she just made Ariel give up her voice” Kate argued.

“That’s Ariel’s decision! She wanted to have legs so she could make this guy fall in love with her. How does she even know she is in love with him? They just met!” Yelena exclaimed. Kate thought about Yelena’s point.

“Fair. You’re right, Ariel is trying to change herself for someone she barely knows. And Ursula is literally just doing her job.” Kate said.

“I’d never want to be with someone who made me change myself.” Yelena said as she shuddered. Too many bad memories of having no control over herself and being forced to bend to everyone’s will. Kate noticed but didn’t want to push.

“I don’t think you should have to do that either. I wouldn’t want you to change a thing about yourself.” Kate said seriously as Urusla sang about body language. Yelena spared a glance at Kate and saw the loving look on the other woman’s face.

“Nor would I want you to change yourself.” Yelena whispered back. The two looked away shyly before Kate cleared her throat.

“Let’s go ice the cake and then we can finish the movie.” Kate suggested and got up. She held a hand out for Yelena and helped her up. They took a few minutes to set up the icing supplies and within 10 minutes they had a really nice looking birthday cake. Kate pulled a package of candles out and used the stove to light one. She lit each candle and went to dim the apartment’s lights.

Yelena stared into the flames as she recalled happy memories of Natasha in Ohio. Her eyes began to water as she saw Kate inching closer to her.

“Come here, детка.” Yelena motioned Kate over. Kate went to stand next to Yelena but the older woman moved in front of Kate and brought Kate’s arms around her waist. Kate’s breath hitched for the umpteenth time that night but relaxed as she felt Yelena lean back into her.

“So we sing, yes? Yelena asked quietly. Kate brought her face close to Yelena’s and nodded. Kate counted to three and the two women began singing:

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Natasha, happy birthday to you.” They both sang softly. Yelena let a few tears fall and Kate brought a hand up to wipe them away. They stood still, gazing into the candles’ flames.

“Why don’t you make a wish, Yelena?” Kate whispered. Yelena nodded softly and closed her eyes. I want to wish for you to come back Natasha but I know that is an impossible wish. So I wish to make this wonderful woman holding me to be mine. If Barton likes her, I bet you would like her too, sestra.  Yelena thought to herself. She took a deep breath in and blew the candles out. They stared at the dying smoke from the candles. Yelena pulled Kate’s arms tighter around.

“Thank you, Kate. That meant…more than anything.” Yelena whispered. Kate pressed a kiss to the back of Yelena’s head.

“You never need to thank me.” Kate whispered back. They remained in the embrace for a few more seconds before Kate untangled their arms. Silently Kate cut the cake for her and Yelena. She briefly argued that Fanny and Lucky deserve a piece.

“It’s not chocolate, Yelena. They have been good puppies tonight.” Kate said as she gave Yelena her best puppy eyes. Lucky whined and turned on his signature Lucky charm. Fanny rolled her eyes but knew if she did it too, her human would give in.

“The three of you…Will be the death of me” Yelena groaned but smiled, gesturing to Kate to cut them small pieces of birthday cake. As Yelena took a bite of her cake, she moaned softly.

“But what a cool way to die,” Yelena muttered to herself. The two women returned to the couch and resumed the movie. Fanny and Lucky gobbled down their portion of cake happily.

Once everyone was satisfied with their piece of birthday cake, everyone fell into a food coma. Lucky and Fanny laid by Yelena and Kate’s feet, contentment on their faces. Yelena had resumed her position in Kate’s arms. She had her legs resting against the arm of the couch, her upper body tucked right under Kate’s arm. The tension that was always around the two women was still there, but now both were slightly aware of their growing attraction for each other made the tension easier to stand.

Soon, Ariel and Eric were on a romantic boat ride and Sebastian began a musical number. Kate smiled. She always loved this scene, especially when Scuttle began to sing back up. But she couldn’t help but really listen to the lyrics.

There you see her

Sitting there across the way

She don't got a lot to say

But there's something about her

And you don't know why

But you're dying to try

You wanna kiss the girl

Kate turned her gaze from the television and onto Yelena’s face. She saw a small smile grace Yelena’s face. Kate thought about how quickly Yelena became her everything. How she was once a girl who didn’t have much to say but somehow Kate always knew she was special. It was why she never took that shot on the roof. Something in her gut told her so.

Sha-la-la-la-la-la

Don't be scared (sha-la, sha-la-la ya, ya, ya)

You got the mood prepared (woah, woah)

Go on and kiss the girl

Sha-la-la-la-la-la

Don't stop now (sha-la, sha-la-la ya, ya, ya)

Don't try to hide it how

You want to kiss the girl (woah, woah )

Similar thoughts were running through Yelena’s mind. She was shocked at how quickly she came to trust the archer. She wanted revenge for Natasha for the longest time and it took some time for Yelena to realize that Natasha made her choice to die for the world. For Yelena to live freely. For Yelena to be happy. Natasha would not want her to be alone and miserable. And this Kate Bishop…this awkward young woman who shared so many similarities to her golden retriever…she makes Yelena happy. And she wanted to show Kate how much she meant to her.

The song ended…Yelena rolled her eyes at the fact that Ariel and Eric didn’t kiss. Better off Yelena thought. They have no chemistry Yelena chuckled to herself. She licked her lips, mulling over her next actions.

“Kate? Could you pause the movie?” Yelena asked quietly. Kate snapped out of her thoughts and immediately obeyed Yelena’s request.

“Are you okay? Do you want to stop watching? Do you feel okay?” Kate asked worriedly. Yelena chuckled again and squeezed Kate’s arm that was wrapped around her. She sighed and pushed herself to sit up and face Kate.

“I’m actually pretty okay, thanks to you.” Yelena said quietly as she looked into Kate’s eyes.

The nervous tensions that wafted off Kate and Yelena woke up Fanny and Lucky.

Is…is what I think…going to happen? Lucky asked timidly. He was so afraid that his human would, once again, screw up the moment.

I think so? Fanny said with the same timidness in her.

“I’m glad I could help” Kate said gently. Yelena smiled before clearing her throat.

“I need to say a few things, Kate Bishop, and I need you to listen.” Yelena said quietly. Kate nodded silently and waited for Yelena. The blonde took a deep breath.

“I have never had a friend or someone that I care about as much as you, Kate Bishop. My happiest memories were fake and then my life was taken away from me. My life has always been a state of controlled chaos where caring, family, friends…. love ” Yelena whispered the last part, darting her eyes away from Kate for a brief second. Kate caught the gesture, her heart beginning to beat faster.

“I never had any of that for most of my life. When Oksana freed me, the whole world opened up to me again. Fighting next to Natasha, reuniting with my parents…I felt like I could have that piece of my life back. We got maybe one or two birthdays before I was… dust .” Yelena said quietly. Kate placed a soothing hand on Yelena’s back.

“And then Natasha was gone. And I was so angry. No one thought about telling us. Not even Barton. The Iron Man and the Captain were honored as martyrs for the greater good and my sister…she got a small headstone and what kills me, Kate…there is no body in that grave. My sister’s body is not even on this planet.” Yelena gasped out. Kate went to comfort the blonde but Yelena shook her off. This definitely took a hard left turn from her initial thoughts.

“I was so angry so when I got the assignment, I took it. I wanted to avenge my sister. I wanted to do something for her instead of always being in debt. But when I realized it was all a lie…that my anger was based on lies…somehow that felt worse.” Yelena said with a sigh. She looked so defeated. She looked up at Kate’s face and expected pity but she saw nothing but understanding and love staring back at her.

“I thought I would never get a happy life. But then this really cute golden retriever ran into my life with this really pretty girl and all of a sudden, things got brighter. I looked forward to waking up because there was someone waiting for me. I had someone to share the day with, share meals with. Watch stupid movies that are so outdated because I never got to see them. Someone who went out of her way to spend my sister’s birthday with me and make a really good cake. Someone who told me to make a wish…you want to know what I wished for, Kate Bishop?” Yelena asked quietly, watching tears build up in Kate’s blue eyes. Kate could only nod as Yelena joined their hands.

“I wanted to wish for Natasha to come back. But I know she died for the world to survive. For me to live. And Natasha would not want me to live alone and miserable.” Yelena said as her voice became stronger. She moved closer to Kate, who had now started crying softly and squeezed Yelena’s hand harder trying to ground herself.

“My wish, Kate Bishop, is to make you happy. Everyday. Spend every holiday and birthday…including your stupid Flag Day. To grow old, watch our puppies grow up. To be held in your arms everyday because it makes me feel safe. I have never felt safe in my life, Kate. My wish, Kate Bishop, if you will let me…is to love you.” Yelena said strongly and cupped Kate’s face. Kate let out a happy sob and leaned her forehead against’ Yelena’s.

THIS IS IT FANNNNNY! Lucky sat up and wagged his tail. Fanny shot up as well, wagging her tail. The two women were completely oblivious to their furry children.

“I want nothing more in this world than to love you and be loved by you.” Kate confessed with a smile. Yelena’s face was split with the widest grin she ever grinned.

“Kate, if you don’t kiss me now….I might die” Yelena whispered as she closed the space between their lips. Kate met her halfway in a deep kiss.

Fanny and Lucky jumped up, barking happily chasing their tails in pure joy. The noise startled Kate and Yelena from their kiss. They both started laughing. Kate pulled Yelena into her arms.

“You think they’re happy about this new development?” Kate said with a chuckle. Yelena hummed in agreement.

“They’re smart puppies. They probably knew before we did.” Yelena said as she brought her mouth back to Kate’s in a deep kiss. Lucky and Fanny howled in delight causing happy laughter and kisses between Yelena and Kate.

Humming in happiness, Kate leaned her forehead against Yelena’s.

“Does this mean I still have to sleep on the couch?” Kate asked shyly. Yelena grinned as she shook her head.

“You were never going to sleep on the couch, Kate Bishop. Not when I know how strong your arms are when you hold me.” Yelena confessed as she drew Kate down into another kiss.

A few months later

Lucky and Fanny led their humans through the park. The following months after Yelena and Kate declared their love for each saw major changes. Yelena finished out her contract with Airbnb and moved her and Fanny into Kate’s apartment. Yelena also entered into a more permanent arrangement with SHIELD. She even arranged for Melina and Alexei to fly in and meet Kate. Alexei boasted about his former glory days over a true Russian dinner that Melina made with help from Kate. They were very accepting of Kate and told Yelena that they approved of the match.

Kate’s mom, on the other hand, was not as accepting. After being sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in jail, Kate visited her mother at the high security prison. Apparently snitching on Kingpin and being a former henchman had put a target on Eleanor’s back which put her in severe danger in a lower security prison. Yelena accompanied Kate for support. When Eleanor saw Yelena next to her daughter, her warm persona dropped and the ice queen that Eleanor was known to be resurfaced. Not only was Eleanor angry that Kate would continue to be linked to Clint Barton but now was romantically involved with the assassin she hired to kill Barton. Eleanor called Kate ungrateful and threatened that Yelena would never be happy with Kate because she was a failure in Eleanor’s eyes. Kate was shocked at the frosty tone from her mother, realizing that this was truly who her mother was. When Yelena’s name flew from Eleanor’s mouth, the blonde stood up and slammed her fists on the table.

“Kate is not a failure. She was never a failure. She is probably the greatest thing you had the privilege of having a hand in creating. I will never leave her. If you think that was ever a possibility then you really live in la la land. Black Widows typically never fail their missions. We either succeed or die. And it is my life’s mission to love Kate to my fullest ability. Either I will succeed or die trying. So don’t forget that, Ms. Bishop. You so kindly remind your daughter that I am dangerous, that I'm an assassin, a Black Widow….but don’t you ever forget that, Eleanor Bishop. I have ways to make you disappear so quickly that no one would notice. If you ever threaten my love or tell her she is a failure again,  I will not hesitate to show you your place, Ms. Bishop.” Yelena threatened with a growl.

Kate placed a calming hand on Yelena’s back. Protective Yelena still took her breath away and she really didn’t mind her girlfriend threatening her mother after finally seeing what kind of person Eleanor Bishop was. And she’s not gonna lie…watching Yelena go full Black Widow turned Kate on.

Clearing her voice, Kate informed her mother that it would be the last time they would see or talk to her unless Eleanor came around. Eleanor in response, announced that she no longer had a daughter and the guards took her back to her cell.

The visit left Kate upset, so when they got home Yelena leashed up Fanny and Lucky. The walk in the park and the calming nature of watching the dogs play would settle Kate’s nerves. And it did. The moment Kate saw Fanny and Lucky running carefree with their friends reminded her that this was the life she would always choose. She snuggled into Yelena’s embrace with a relaxed smile.

As Fanny and Lucky chased their friends they took a moment to look at their humans.

We did it, Fanny. We really did it. Lucky said proudly. Fanny barked in agreement.

We sure did, brother. Fanny said quietly. Lucky tilted his head at Fanny.

Brother? Lucky said in shock.

We are family. You’re my best friend and now you’re my brother. Those are our mothers and it's everything I could ever want Fanny said as she nudged Lucky’s stunned body. If dogs could cry, Lucky would’ve. In the span of almost a year, Lucky went from homeless and alone to having a home, two mommies, a best friend and sister. His life was now complete.
