Liberal Arts

Notes:

For Full Moon Ficlet #489 - ear

Work Text:

Peter prepared dinner as he listened to Stiles pick out a tune on the portable keyboard in his room. Stiles had rolled his eyes but said a quiet thank you when the keyboard had 'magically' appeared in his room two days after bemoaning the effort it took to use the keyboards in the college library for homework assignments.

"Damn liberal arts requirements," Stiles had moaned when Peter had asked about the class.

"Why did you pick that course?" Peter prodded.

"Well, Math, Music and Myth sounded like something I'd be interested in," Stiles admitted. "It's not really that hard, just way more work than I figured it would be, is all."

"Can you drop it?"

Stiles nodded. "But the drop deadline is still a few weeks away. So I can think about it."

"Whatever you think best," Peter said, working hard to remain neutral. If Stiles wanted Peter's opinion, he'd ask. Until then, he was here to allow Stiles to vent.

Over dinner, Stiles asked, "I need to go to a concert. Well, a live presentation of music where the music is the focus. Specifically not a club. Would you like to come with me?"

Peter nodded. "I would like that. What sort of concert were you thinking of?"

"My biggest weakness is classical music, specifically baroque. And it's obviously one of the professor's favorite forms," Stiles admitted with a shrug. "Although that classical music radio station from Buffalo you found online has been a help. But I don't have much of an ear for classical music and, well, that would help tick a couple of things off my list."

"The Kennedy Center is next door," Peter pointed out. "I can get tickets to something if you'd like. What kind of a timeframe are you working with?"

"In the next month," Stiles admitted. "The concert review is due just after the drop deadline but, well, I'd like to give it a shot."

Peter nodded. "I'll check to see what is scheduled. If you specifically want baroque, we may have to go further afield than our immediate backyard."

"That's reasonable," Stiles replied. Then he pointed his fork at Peter. "But somewhere a college student could reasonably go. No flying off to New York for the weekend or anything like that."

Peter laughed. That had been an impulse that he quickly quashed. Not that he would admit that. "All right. If I can't find anything that sounds reasonable, I'll find some alternatives and let you choose."

"I can live with that," Stiles replied as he went back to his dinner.

Peter did surprise Stiles with a baroque opera. Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart was more than Stiles ever expected.

"I had hoped that a comedy would be more approachable," Peter confessed.

"It was fun," Stiles admitted.

"It's very popular and I was hoping you'd like it," Peter replied.

Stiles sighed. "Damn. Now I'm going to keep this class." He rolled his eyes.

"Nothing else is going to suffer if you keep it?" Peter asked.

Stiles shook his head. "Nah. I'm pretty much on top of everything." He shrugged. "Having quiet space to work has been helpful. You're right, I wouldn't have done well sharing a room in the dorm."

"Just looking out for Pack," Peter replied airily.

"Smug!wolf!" Stiles laughed.
