Work Text:

Technoblade, the great, feared warrior falling for someone? It couldn't be. Well most people didn't know it was even was true to be fair.

Techno had started an affair with a powerful man who was both a manipulator and a warrior himself. He was strong and beautiful under his mask, and Techno was one of the only people who'd seen underneath it.

He had the controls, held the strings of just about every citizen of the SMP and now gone L'manberg. He was the mastermind, a puppeteer, the controller, and over everyone. He was a king as it is, he played the game and everyone was just his pawn. Some of them at least. Only a single person did Dream truly not control out of tyranny, but from lust and emotion. That person happened to be the feared one, Technoblade.

But Dream's dictatorship was uprooted by Techno's two supposed friends, Tommy and Tubbo.

They fought miles away, while Techno was off in the opposite direction on a mission. As soon as he found out about the fight, he was furious. It was too late. But he couldn't tell anyone if no one knew about the relationship they had. But they would feel his wrath, and when it hit, they wouldn't want his mercy.

Dream had been so close to defeating them, so close. He had the room where he kept everyone's prized things, and Techno knew about it. A replica of his axe was there even, just to be a bit more hidden, under the shadows and inconspicuous.

But Punz had been a traitor. He'd turned on Dream and brought the whole SMP with him. Betrayal was all it was, and it took all Techno had to keep himself from ripping out the other man's throat.

He played the waiting game instead, patient, calm, and at peace until the time was right. He formed an alliance, too. One with Philza, and one with Ranboo.

The latter was a mystery to him still. He had memory problems, and Dream said he was special, but Techno couldn't find why. He had blank spots in his head and could do enderman-like things, but who knew with Dream.

He had a master plan that even he himself didn't fully know. He played a little risky, and he was still playing. He seemed pinned down, but Techno knew he wasn't even close to finished.

He was more beautiful than the stars, and each one knew him by his own name.

He was more ambitious than the greatest known mastermind. But that was him. He was the unknown greatest mastermind, and he played himself beyond anyone's wildest imaginations, even his own.

Dream was like a symphony. A symphony still going, still being written, still trying to be played. He was like the tune of a song everyone knew but could never find the end to. Though maybe he was a melody, a symphony per say. He was a melody to get his way, to master his plans. He was a symphony, beautiful and great, but he wouldn't go unfinished.

"Do not forget, under any circumstance, Dream is on his last life. He will not respawn. However, if you are in danger, you click the button of your sword, and I will get you back immediately. Do not risk your lives under any situation, both of you."

Fatherly Phil giving the same lecture. They had quite the journey ahead and wouldn't see each other for a long time. Techno was prepared, he knew, but nervous as hell.

Phil kept saying to not risk his life, but it didn't matter if Dream was on his final one. Ranboo nodded, however, satisfied with the plan. Techno nodded but it was absentmindedly, though.

The only problem was that Phil knew. Of course he did, he always knew for some reason. He gave Techno a knowing glance. Phil knew Techno would let one of his lives be stolen if it meant Dream would live. Phil knew Techno would give up a third of his own life to save the third Dream had remaining. The trade was worth it to him, very worth it.

After checking everything a million times, they prepared to take their leave. Techno looked at Ranboo, who nodded in return. They waved to Philza as they walked away, Techno ready for a hard journey.

They made their way to the prison just fine, it only taking a few hours with nether traveling. Here came the real risky part. Techno used his teeth to pop off the cork from the bottle. He looked at Ranboo and their eyes locked in place for a split second.

Without another hesitation, he tipped his head back and downed the potion. He did the same with a second, and he could feel the adrenaline.

He watched Ranboo look at the prison before gazing the same way. He looked towards the center, where he knew Dream would be.

It didnt it matter what happened to him, Dream was making it out alive.

———————

Ranboo called out to Sam, ready to leave. With the sounds proofing off, it was easy to hear him even through the heavy layers of lava.

Dream went back to his chest, tucking away a book he'd pulled out. He then promptly sat on it, curling back up into a ball.

It pained Techno to watch as he closed his eyes, sinking back into his conscious. Techno kept himself from already running over there, instead moving the the opposite corner of the room, somewhat near the lava to avoid getting hit by the splash potion.

Ranboo instantly faded away, like you do when you aren't losing an actual life.

"I will check on you in a few hours," a voice owned by Sam bounced along the walls in the cell. With that, Techno knew the soundproof was now on.

Taking out a bucket of milk, he quickly drained it all.

"Dream..." he whispered as he fizzled into view.

Dream didn't look up, instead mumbling, "Go away voices, I don't want to talk."

Techno's heart seemed to shatter in that moment. Dream shouldn't have to deal with the voices too, regardless of what they were going on about. He moved forward, towards the frail looking man.

"Hey Dream, it's me."

Dream's head snapped up, startled. Where was his mask? It hadn't been here the whole time, they must've taken it from him. Techno's fist curled some before he released it. His focus was Dream. His eyes shook as they looked over every inch of the boy standing in front of him. In an instant, they were already attached, arms wrapped around one another.

Dream was extremely thin, and he was pale and shivering even with the burning heat source keeping him trapped inside. Even though the two were the same height, Dream seemed shorter due to his tiny demeanor.

He mumbled something, but the words were lost in the fabric of Techno's shirt. His cape fell around both of them, helping Dream's shaking body. He was sobbing at this point, and all Techno would do was hold him steady.

Finally, after seemingly forever, Dream turned his head, cheek on Techno's chest. He spoke, his voice still quivering between sniffles.

"Th-they treat me okay. I have a-a clock. You were here, y-you came. He-he said he wouldn't let you i-in, they fear you. You-you're their biggest concern."

Techno just nodded, his chin slightly digging in to Dream's hair as it bobbed down.

"You don't have to worry, I'm here now." He planted a kiss on the top of his head. After another moment, Dream pulled back to look at Techno in full.

His eyes still shivered slightly as they looked at Techno, who was also examining him in return. Dream looked about an inch shorter than Techno, with his now far-too-thin body. Techno was fine though. If anything, he'd gained more muscle and a tougher facial expression. He had an agenda here, and Dream knew it.

Once Dream was sure the fellow presence was alright, he leaned up slightly, pulling down Techno's chin slightly with the tips of his fingers. Lightly, the two's lips met, their eyes snapping shut. Techno could tell he felt different simply from where their mouths were connected. As if to confirm, he quickly found his arms around Dream's waist, and Dream's around his own neck.

Kissing was intoxicating. Feeling romance was intoxicating. Techno had decided that he'd never fall in love, but that was years and years ago. Then he'd fallen for the practical-king of the entire world it seemed. Somehow they'd fallen into love and stayed that way for at least two years before they got to where they were now. But they hadn't fallen out of love even when they'd been on opposing sides. They had trust, plans, and a fiery need for each other.

They fulfilled that desire of want now, while they had time. While they were getting back together without being separated between layers and layers of obsidian walls.

As he pulled back to breathe, Techno removed an arm from around Dream and placed his two forefingers on Dream's lips. Dream's eyes blinked open, full of curiosity.

"First, we get you out. This reunion would be a lot better if it wasn't in an obsidian cage surrounded by lava."

Techno reached inside of his cloak, pulling out an Ender Chest. He placed it and scoured through his items. He pulled out his newly crafted set of netherite armor and placed it on. He grabbed three bottles of invisibility potions and handed two of them to Dream. He kept the splash one for the plan they had in mind.

He explained the plan as they went, keeping a simple explanation and repeatedly letting Dream know that the primary focus was for him to get out alive. With everything done, he handed Dream two more potions, speed ones at the max. He handed Dream a stack of 16 ender pearls as well.

After handing over a few tools and armor for when he escaped, he grabbed everything he would need to fight. He brought out the Orphan Oblitertor. As he pulled it out, the freshly sharpened blade shined with the reflection of the lava. He took out his other tools as well, like a shield for emergencies and a few other potions for battle. He took out the maxed out axe Ranboo had given him, considering that the bastard Tommy still had the real Axe of Peace.

He looked at Dream, who had a bitter smile written on his face. As Techno held up the splash potion, Dream mumbled, "Don't risk or waste your life on me. I can get out."

Dream planted a soft kiss on Techno's lips before hitting the bottom of Techno’s hand. The splash potion that was loosely being held in that hand flew up and back down, and they were both invisible. Dream hid in the corner and started yelling for Sam. The voiceover came on.

"What is it?" his voice sounded somewhat tired, but more frustrated than anything.

"I want to escape. We can fight it out in my cell."

"What?" Sam's inquiry was met with silence. Then a sigh, "I'm on my way, you attention-seeking-"

Techno grimaced, bracing himself. It was just over three minutes later did the lava visibly start coming down. It slowly revealed Sam, who was waiting for the lava to flow all the way down.

Techno stood in a relaxed pose in the middle of the cell, wanting him to call all backup. Luckily, he fell for it, and quickly, he hit the emergency backup button.

Yelling out, "Dream! How did you get all of that. Was it Ranboo?"

"No," Dream responded simply.

Quickly, Punz and Sapnap appeared behind Sam. Now there were the three of them in full, maxed out netherite armor and weapons. Techno groaned, he could take two, but not three. They were all extremely good fighters as well, the challenge level had just gone up by a lot.

He relaxed his stance, and the three brought out a set of Ender Pearls. That was not according to the plan, lucky he'd also given Dream a stack. As soon as they all threw their's in unison, he just barely saw Dream also throw his.

He lost track of where Dream was as the pearls took effect, and he gathered up a tense position, on his guard. He glanced outside of the cage, where Dream should be if everything was going right.

He turned to stare at the three men standing next to wall, staring at him. "I told you, Dream. I said it. 'If you try to escape this prison, I will be the one who takes your final life.'" Sapnap would seem cocky, arrogant, fearless, had he not spoken with a shiver in his voice.

Techno grinned to himself. He gained a ready foot, and the other three did the same. He and Dream had completely opposite fighting styles, but maybe they would think the prison life got to him, not that it wasn't him at all. Not until the real Dream was out at least.

Even with differentiating fighting styles, the guards surely wouldn't notice in the midst of the fight. Punz took the first strike, a feigned blow at his exposed side. It would have been a good try had it been less early in the fight. With that motion, Techno jumped back before moving forward. He held his sword up, and the four began a deadly, wicked dance.

He spun his sword skillfully as he saw Sapnap take his backside. Deflecting Sam with his shield, he whirled around, slashing at both Punz and Sapnap and causing each boy to jump back. Techno took the opportunity to slide to the side, spinning out of reach before sweeping his sword across the ground and knocking Sam, the closest, to his back.

He jumped up quickly though, having barely fallen due to good reflexes. Both Sapnap and Sam lunged forward, but Techno ducked the two blades and swung for Punz. He was ready though, blocking his shield and coming down with an axe he'd just pulled out. Techno lurched back with his arm, flinging it backwards to barely miss Sam.

He held his shield up behind him, knowing to from battle instincts, and good thing as he felt Sapnap's blade knock at it. A harder pressure came down on it as Sam took the chance to hit at him. Techno spun around, swinging his leg bellow Punz's feet and flooring him.

Techno jumped up as he danced around the two jabs each aimed at his rib cage. The four were locked in a vicious dance in a never ending pattern until he gained the upper hand over Sapnap. It was mostly a silent battle, besides grunts and mutters for coordination.

As Techno's shield broken, he took a bottle of invisibility and shoved it full into his mouth. He crushed the glass bottle with his teeth. It was a slight mistake of his haste as he felt the shards cut the inside of his mouth, but he spit out what he could plus the cork. As he did this, he swung his axe quickly around, cutting through part of Sapnap's leg. He took the opening to slash him across the stomach. He lay there bleeding and attempting to get up as Techno fended off the other two opponents. He dodged a far too narrow swing at his head and jumped back onto the nearly dead-man's wrist. The slight crunch of his bones were audible as he looked down to see blood pooling and get on his boots and clothes.

The death message snitched on him as the words "Sapnap was slain by Technoblade using [Orphan Oblitorartor]" popped up into his vision, and he knew everyone else could see the same message.

Sam and and Punz both stopped as they read it again, realizing that they weren't fighting Dream, rather Techno.

"Uhh-oh shit? That means Dream is escaping!" Punz screamed. With the realization plus Sapnap's dead body now fading away and his stuff scattering, the air seemed to still.

Everything paused for a moment as they all stared at the now dead-man's limp corpse, but they didn't have time to mourn as Techno took advantage as the hesitation.

Techno had a few light markings itched into his armor, and he was luckily still invisible. He flipped back as he slipped his blade barely under Sam's arm. He whirled on Punz, but felt an unexpected slash across the lower part of his back where there was no armor protected.

He growled and flipped right around into a vicious slam at Sam. Sam only expected it though, shield up and not taking any damage from the whirling show of metal. Knowing his back was bleeding out, Techno quickly took up the defensive position. Punz and Sam didn't relent, taking full advantage of his weakness.

He jumped back as both lunged simultaneously as him, swiftly their weapons going through the air remaining from the exact spot he'd been standing in. Panting, he swung around to defend his left side, but found them both there. While blocking away one, another sword came down towards his right, cutting a nasty gash halfway down his arm.

He knew he was loosing the upper hand as he felt yet another slot join the one already placed on the lower part of his back. Hissing with pain, he stomped a foot down to hold his ground.

He could hear the blood beneath his foot squish slightly, and regained an even playing field against his two opponents in the deathly dance.

His invisibility wore off after a few more swings, and he knew he was more vulnerable that way. He was right because Sam dropped his axe and grabbed Techno's long plaque, pulling him back. The yanking motion tripped Techno, making him fall onto his own back.

Pushing his hands beneath him and up, he flipped all the way around in a backhand spring, as if an acrobat. He felt a sharp sting go most of the way from his elbow to the backside of his wrist. It had been his sword hand too. As he landed in his feet, his sword clattered to the ground. Bringing out his axe, he took a swing, but it was all too easily blocked by a shield.

He stumbled forward, flicking his hand back to take a sneaky jab at his opponents. He made a quick slash, but it wasn't nearly enough. Falling to the ground, he pushed his shield up. He briefly searched around his belt, looking for a certain item before realizing he didn't have it.

He had left his totem in the Ender Chest... fuck. He kept blocking with his shield, trying to reach the glowing green chest. He knew he wouldn't make it, and his shield shattered.

Flipping around, he jumped back from one sword to be met with another. He managed to dodge it, and while he blocked with the flat of his axe, he also spun it to deflect another blow with the butt of the handle. He was met with a sword at his neck though as he turned yet again. He was done, but Dream had enough time to escape, hopefully. If so, then it was worth it. Techno snapped his eyes shut, bracing for his first sharp taste of death. He would meet it for a first time... or so he thought.

Silence was deafening as nothing could be felt, and Techno peeked his eyes open. Sam suddenly crumpled to the floor, and blood was suddenly seeping through the material of his clothing. The handle of a dagger could be seen sticking out from where he was bleeding. In a flash, a message was declared in the chat. Sam had been slain... by Dream.

It was a mere second before a second message came up, alerting everyone that Punz had just met the same fate with no extra noise. Dream fizzled into sight, having drank a bucket of milk. Techno grimaced. He shouldn't have turned back, but Dream had still saved his life. Risking his own last one in the process.

Bonus

After seeing the two alarming messages in a row about Dream having slain the two remaining guards, Philza had been panic-pacing back and forth at Techno's portal in the Overworld. After a few incredibly long minutes, the portal seemed to shimmer and light up more. It flowed brighter, meaning someone was coming through.

After yet another moment, Philza watched both Techno and Dream come flaunting through the portal.

Techno looked rough, stained in blood and his cape torn in many places. He has a lot of cuts, but otherwise looked fine. He just have had healing potions. Dream looked frail, but he was wearing the spare red cloak Techno had taken with him for Dream. His figure was hidden, so Philza couldn't tell what condition he was it. His hair was messy, and his mask was gone.

But there the two pounced out of the portal, looking like they came from a medieval movie. They were a pair, Romeo and Juliet sauntering out of the Nether Portal in style, not matter how worn down they both actually were. They were a pair that was for sure, a strong pair, a power duo you could say.
