Sweet (Like Me)

Summary:

Robin and Nancy are closing up shop at Scoops, but are interrupted by a thunderstorm and a confession.

Notes:

This was originally an assignment for my creative writing class, but I couldn't stop thinking about Nancy and Robin while writing it. If you hate it, please be gentle with me. :')

Work Text:

[Scene: An ice cream shop located in a small town mall. A cooler in the middle of the stage with tables framing the sides. Chairs are stacked upside down on the few tables in the store. The two employees of the shop, ROBIN and NANCY, are finishing up their closing clean up duties while a thunderstorm progresses outside.]

ROBIN: [While cleaning] All I’m saying is if that lady didn’t want a cherry on her banana split all she had to do was tell me. I don’t think the 10 minute lecture about how red dye 40 could lead to bladder cancer was completely necessary.

NANCY: [Across the room] I would have taken that over the kid who dropped his ice cream 3 times in a row.

ROBIN: [chuckling] Tell me you didn’t enjoy the look on the little dingus’ face when you said he had to pay for his next replacement cone.

NANCY: I am not one to take pleasure in children’s suffering, Robin.

ROBIN: No, just mine, right?

[Nancy looks at Robin for a moment then looks back down to the work she’s doing. Her answer gets interrupted by a loud boom of thunder]

NANCY: It’s getting bad out there.

ROBIN: [shivering] …Yeah it is.

NANCY: [Looks over to Robin.] Hey, are you okay?

ROBIN: Yeah… yeah, just not the biggest fan of thunderstorms.

NANCY: Oh, well I don’t think it’ll last for much longer.

[Rain starts to come down harder]

ROBIN: I think I’m just going to sit over here in the corner for a little bit. [Robin starts moving to the area in front of the cooler.] Don’t worry about me!

NANCY: Robin…? [Nancy moves so she is hovering over Robin.]

ROBIN: [Weak voiced] Yeah, Nance?

NANCY: Do you mind if I join you down there?

ROBIN: Oh, no! Of course not! Make yourself at home. [Robin gestures to the area around her on the floor.]

[Nancy shifts to the floor directly next to Robin]

NANCY: Nice place you got here.

ROBIN: Thanks, it’s a rental.

[The girls laugh while the storm continues.]

NANCY: I like your laugh.

ROBIN: [Without a beat.] I like you.

[Nancy is stunned into silence.]

ROBIN: Oh, no. That just slipped out. I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable. You know me, I never think before I speak. Maybe we should just forget that happened. Yeah, we could pretend I said something entirely different. [Continuing to talk without taking a breath, Robin speaks with a British accent.] Like, oh what nice weather we’re having today-

NANCY: Robin! I don’t want to pretend it never happened.

ROBIN: Oh… why?

NANCY: Because I like you too.

ROBIN: [Shocked] Oh, that’s nice.

NANCY: [Giggles] Yes, it’s very nice. Can you just kiss me now.

ROBIN: Yes Ma'am!

[The girls both lean in with a sweet kiss, then smile at each other no longer listening to the rain outside.]
