Chapter Text
Wednesday May 5th.
Damian was sitting in the dining hall, with Emile & Ewen, eating an omelet… for lunch. This was a travesty, who eats omelets for lunch, it’s clearly a breakfast food, but his friends didn’t seem to think it mattered. Across the dining hall Damian saw Anya happily eating her omelet and talking to Becky. This was notable because today was Anya's day to clean the board, and there's no way Anya could clean the whole board that fast.
“Hey, isn’t Anya’s day to clean the board?” Damian said to his friends.
“Yeah, why does it matter?” Ewen half heartedly responded.
“Because she’s eating lunch, and there’s no way in hell she could finish cleaning that fast.” Damian said, only slightly agitated, compared to his usual fully agitated when it came to matters involving Anya.
“I ask again, why does it matter? Who cares if she didn’t clean up, nothing you need to do about it.”
“I guess.” Damian shrugged, but for the rest of lunch he felt guilty, but he wasn’t doing anything wrong. It was Anya’s fault she forgot, and he didn’t owe it to her to remind her. On the other hand, reminding her was the good thing to do, but he had no reason to tell her. Plus, what would she think if he reminded her, would Anya think he thought about all the time. No, she wouldn’t think that, Anya would never think that.
Damian thought and thought, until he noticed his friends packing up. With that realization came the realization that he had zoned out most all of lunch.
“Heyy, earth to Damian.” Emile said “there's ten minutes until class starts.”
“Oh, yeah, sorry.” Damian hazily responded, still half spaced out.
“Come on Damian, what's up with you?” Ewen asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
“Nothing sorry.” Damian shook his head, and snapped out of it. “Okay, let's go.” They put their trays back and started to class, but then Damian noticed that Anya was still eating. “Hey guys, give me a second, you can go on without me.” Damian said to his friends.
“Okay, something wrong Damian?” Emile asked.
“No, I just forgot something.”
“Okay, see ya in a minute boss man.” Emile responded.
Damian walked back to a dining hall slightly faster than normal, urgent to get this over with. He walked over to Anya, who was somehow still eating. “Hey, idiot, today was your day to clean the board.” Damian didn’t know what he thought Anya’s reaction was going to be but he didn’t expect this. Anya’s face went white, then she stared wide-eyed at Becky, then at him, then at Becky again. Then Anya slowly got up from her table, and without putting her tray away or grabbing her bag even, she ran.
“Oh my god.” Becky said “Damian grab Anya’s bag please.”
“Why do I have to do it? She's your friend.” Damian half asked, half complained.
“Because I’m putting her tray away.” Becky responded
“Fine.” Damian said, he picked up her bag and walked to class with 5 minutes to spare.
Damian got to class, put Anya’s bag at her desk, then walked to his and started getting his books out for class. As he was grabbing his notebook he saw Anya do the most stupid thing she had done all week, as she was erasing the chalk board she started jumping to erase the top, but Anya was wearing a skirt that was much too short for that actively. Damian was in shock, who was this dumb, as to jump up and down in a skirt in front of almost a whole. The worst part was though, most of the boys were gawking at her, and the girls were either snicking or not paying attention. Damian wished Becky was here, but she was, somehow, still walking back to class. So, Damian, notebook in hand, quietly walked to the front of the class and took the eraser from Anya and started to clean the board. Anya however did not seem to get that he was helping and jumped trying to get the eraser back, because Anya is an idiot. Damian calmly moved his notebook in front of Anya in an attempt to cover her skirt, and whispered into her ear “Stop jumping.” Anya clearly was comprehending or processing what Damian was doing because after that she didn’t move, she just watched Damian clean the board until the bell rang.
Then they both walked to their seats, and Damian saw Becky whispering to Anya. He just watched them whisper for a minute until he heard Ewen whisper into his ear “Dude, what was that.”
“What?” Damian responded in a hushed tone.
“You,” Ewen said “you just went and cleaned to board for Anya. You had your hand over her like she's your girlfriend or something Boss.”
Damian could not believe what he was hearing. “She's- she’s not my girlfriend.”
“Ok man” was all Ewen said and then they went back to listening to class, unlike Becky and Anya who were still whispering.
Damian wondered what they were talking about, more accurately he wondered if they were whispering about him. He wondered if they also thought he was acting like a boyfriend to Anya. Did they think he liked Anya, did Anya like him, did Anya want Damian to act like a boyfriend? All these thoughts rushed through his head at approximately a hundred miles an hour, but one thought worried him much more than any other, did Anya and Becky know Damian liked Anya. The idea that they could know something like that horrified him. Damian didn’t know when or if he’d ever tell Anya that he liked her, it’s not he’d ever done such a thing before. To be completely truthful Anya was the first and only crush Damian had ever had. He didn’t know how to tell someone that he liked them, or how to act around them after that, or how to go on dates.
Fortunately all those thoughts disappeared when the bell rang. His good fortune was lost though when as he was exiting class Anya came up to him and said “Hey, can i talk to you?”
