Work Text:

”Sirius,” Remus sounds a little faint, running a hand through brown curls. ”What– er– what–?”

”Isn’t it great? Sirius beams, and Remus recognises the expression on his face - the same one he used to wear during their Hogwarts’ days when he’d thought of an outrageously spectacular prank.

“You don’t even drive!”

“So?” Sirius looks confused, then adds as if Remus is a bit slow on the uptake. “You do!”

“I’m not driving that!”

“Why not?” Sirius looks perplexed. “Harry said he wanted to go campering-“

“Camping,” Remus interjects automatically but Sirius waves it off.

“-and I thought it’d be the perfect thing to do before we send him off to school in September. It’s our last chance, Moony.”

“He’s starting school, Padfoot, he’s not moving out. He’ll be back for Christmas.”

“And with this, we can go campering-“

Camping!”

“-all year around!”

“No way,” Remus says, firmly, recognising this as one of the few times where he needed to put his foot down. “We’re not going camperi- camping– in that. You’ll have to take it back. Preferably before Harry-“

“WICKED!” Harry’s voice comes from somewhere behind him and the soon-to-be eleven year old rushes past him, throwing himself in Sirius’ arms. “Padfoot, it’s perfect!”

Sirius wraps his arms around the boy, grinning smugly at Remus over the unruly mop of black hair, “See Moony, it’s perfect!”

Harry disentangles himself from Sirius and turns to face him, green eyes wide and pleading and it’s an expression so achingly similar to the one he’s seen on James’ face a million times.

“Oh, Moony, we can go, can’t we? It’s the only thing I want for my birthday!”

Remus presses his lips together to stop himself from giving away a smile, ”yesterday the ’only thing’ you wanted for your birthday was a broom, Haz.”

Harry pushes his bottom lip out in a pout, a move he’s definitely picked up from Sirius.

”But now it’s this,” he insists. ”Please, Moony, please can we go?”

”Yes, Moony. Please can we go?” Sirius echoes, the traitor, grey eyes shining and a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Remus knows he’s lost, knew he did as soon as Harry set eyes on the monstrous thing, and probably even before that. He rolls his eyes before giving a helpless shrug, sighing dramatically.

”I guess we–” he starts, but before he can finish he finds himself with his arms full of Harry.

”Thank you, Moony!” He exclaims before he’s off again, opening the door and climbing inside before Sirius follows, throwing his own, ”Yes, thank you, Moony!” over his shoulder with a grin.

Remus can hear them striking up a vigorous chant of campering, campering, campering! from inside the van and he shakes his head fondly, a sudden burst of love in his chest. For them, he thinks, a little helplessly, it might even be worth spending the summer in a camper van.
