They were playing pool and to everyone's annoyance, Hangman was winning by a mile. After each shot the cocky bastard would do a lap of the table, bathing in the attention even as Payback booed. He seemed so intent on showing them all up that when he pulled his ringing phone from his pocket and dropped the cue they were all surprised. Suddenly his sly smirk transformed into a grin they’d never seen on him before. He rushed to answer and immediately abandoned the table. The other pilots watched as he rushed to a quieter spot in the bar, the man was practically giggling.
Hangman returned over half an hour later. Face still split in a wide grin. Eventually, Phoenix broke.
“Alright, what was that about Bagman?”
“Huh?”
“The phone call man. You ran off like a little school girl.” Payback laughed.
Fanboy, imitated Hangman running off. Heels kicking up and arms flailing. Some of the men shoved Hangman around, teasing him with a gentle comradery that Hangman had managed to earn himself since the mission.
“Fine, fine.” Hangman relented, blushing. “That was my fiancé.”
The pilots whooped and hollered. Payback called for another round, throwing his arm around the soon-to-be-married man.
“Congratulations,” Phoenix laughed. “I’m a little surprised you found a woman who can tolerate you though.”
This earned another raucous round of laughter from the group and a few unsubtle nods of agreement.
Hangman’s smile wavered slightly and he cleared his throat.
“Uh-I didn't.” He laughed nervously.
Coyote was the first and seemingly only to understand, “Good for you man!” He exclaimed, reaching over to tap the neck of his beer against Hangmans.
The remainder understood only that they’d missed something. Noticing this, Hangman opted to be blunt.
“I’m gay.” He explained.
Realization dawned over the group. Eclectic words of support and at least one ‘I knew it’ rang out. Hangman couldn’t do anything but laugh. They broke into an interrogation, how long have you been together? 6 years. How did you meet? Bar. Is he handsome? Ridiculously so. Hangman answered all of them excitedly, not having realized how desperate he was to share this joy with his newfound friends. His only worry being about the dozen wedding invites he was going to need to add.
