The Space Between

Summary:

A collection of short pieces that are part of the Phantom Mandalorian universe, but aren't long enough to be their own fics.

Notes:

I originally wrote this piece for DannyMay. Takes place after Force Ghosts (once that fic is finished lol...)

Chapter 1: Transmission .01

Chapter Text

Danny tapped the edge of the holoprojector before giving Din a suspicious look.

“You accept space travel…but holograms are too much?”

“Yes! Last week we were using hyperspace transponders which take forever for people to answer. Now you’re telling me you can just send messages using holograms?”

It was a lightyear’s jump in technological advancements as far as Danny was concerned. Previously, they’d had to wait days for Luke to respond to what essentially amounted to a space email. Now, Din was handing him a little disk the size of his palm that could not only send messages instantly, but it could do it with a projected image of the subject. Forget the Kimmunicator from his favorite cartoon–this was way better.

“Most of the people I’m in contact with don’t want to be found. Holoprojectors aren’t usually an option.”

“So…why the change? Who’re we connecting with this?”

“It’s for you.”

Danny continued to examine the device in his hands, taking in the minute details. It reminded him a lot of his parent’s work–strangely futuristic yet slapdash and haphazardly put together at the same time. He ran a finger over a seam.

“You’re not getting rid of me, right?”

He kept his tone light, and there was a glimmer of a smile in his eyes, but the words rang somewhat hollow.

“No. This is for when I have bounties. I want you to have a way to contact me no matter who you’re with. After the last few times…”

“You’ve only left me with a babysitter once.”

“And you were shot.”

“It was just one time.”

Din sighed heavily, “Then there was the incident with Fett.”

“He apologized.”

“He drugged you.”

“It was just one time, and I got a great nap out of it.”

“My point is,” Din continued, “I don’t have a lot of people I trust, and even the people I do trust come with some…trouble.”

“They’re not too bad. I mean, most of my friends like to beat me up.”

“Are we talking about your ghostly ‘friends’ or human ones?”

“Both?”

“I should be concerned, but I think my friends are the same.”

“Must be a Mandalorian thing.” Danny fidgeted with the holoprojector, again feeling the strange sense of loss that he couldn’t quite place. “You’re sure this will work? I can call you whenever?”

“We can test it if you want.”

Din gently took the holoprojector and pressed a few buttons before setting it down on the dash. For a moment, nothing happened.

Then, a pale blue light flickered and formed the familiar (if miniature) figure of Boba Fett. The picture flickered, and Danny could see the tiny variations in the light that helped translate the man's movement as he crossed his arms and looked at them.

“I didn’t expect you to contact me so soon,” he said simply, “But you have good timing. I need a favor.”

“What sort of favor?” Din asked, a frown on his words.

“The kind where I would suggest leaving your son somewhere safe. Something big is happening on Tatooine.”

“I’ll need more details than that.”

“It’s about the crime syndicates. There’s–”

Boba Fett stopped and looked at someone beyond the hologram before hastily telling them goodbye and ending the transmission.

“So…when are we going?”
