Work Text:

Kaito cursed his luck. One week ago, he had foolishly decided to make a bet with Hakuba Saguru, one of the most annoying people in the class alongside Akako and Aoko, unless he decided to feel generous about the latter. And, unfortunately, Saguru happened to be Kaito’s crush as well. And that bet one week ago was where Kaito’s horrible, horrible luck came in.

Kaito admitted he had been cocky. Just the day before, he had finished learning some new tricks. With just a wave of his hand, he would now be able to transfer his entire deck of cards onto Saguru, each suit in a different pocket, in order, the red cards on the right and the black cards on the left. He also planned to make the jokers appear in Saguru’s shoes, as a fun little joke. So during lunch break, he appeared in front of Saguru and, waving his deck of cards, and said, “Wanna see a trick?”

Saguru raised his eyebrows, seeming to scan the cards over to make sure there wasn’t glitter trapped between them, or whatever he suspected Kaito was going to do this time. “Not really, no.”

“Please?” Kaito asked again, letting a grin show on his face. “We’ll even make it a bet.”

Saguru sighed. “Fine. I know you’ll do it even if I don’t agree, but might as well get something in return.”

If Kaito could grin wider, that’s what he did. “Great! Let’s bet chocolate.”

Saguru narrowed his eyes. “Chocolate.”

Kaito nodded. “Yup! I quite like chocolate, don’t you?”

Saguru thought for a moment. “I suppose so. Suzuki Chocolate is the best.”

The expensive type that I can’t afford…? Oh well, not like I’m going to lose this bet anyways! “Okay! With just a wave of my hand, the hearts suit will be in your right jacket pocket, the diamonds suit in your right pants pocket, the clubs suit in your left jacket pocket, and the spades suit in your left pants pocket. All in order, of course!” Kaito let out a laugh. “And the jokers in your shoes, too!”

Saguru nodded. “Alright. If you manage to pull this off, I owe you chocolate in…” he thought, “exactly a week. If you mess anything up, you owe me chocolate in the same amount of time. So, reds on the right, blacks on the left?”

“Correct!” Kaito confirmed, shuffling his deck of cards. “You ready?” When Saguru nodded, Kaito said, “Now then, get ready!”

Saguru closed his eyes, and in one second, Kaito did his magic. When Saguru opened his eyes, he began to check his pockets. There’s no way I messed this trick up! Kaito thought gleefully. I’ve spent so long learning it and practicing it on Aoko, after all!

Then Saguru made a soft sound like an “Aha”, and when he pulled out the jokers from his shoes, Kaito froze.

He'd brought the wrong deck of cards.

The one he had used when practicing and learning the trick didn’t separate the jokers by color; they had looked exactly the same. But the one he had just used on Saguru had one black joker and one red one. And Kaito, so arrogant and cocky that he didn’t realize his mistake with the deck, made another mistake with which side of Saguru’s body he put the jokers on.

Saguru smirked. “I believe you owe me chocolates now?”

Kaito swallowed. “Yeah,” he muttered.

Only after school did Kaito realize that exactly one week from now was Valentine’s Day. The day where girls gave chocolates to the boys they liked. And, well, Kaito wasn’t a girl, but he had crossdressed enough for him to be the more feminine one in his and Saguru’s nonexistent relationship. Feeling his cheeks redden, Kaito crawled in bed and hoped that this was all a dream, because giving his crush chocolates on Valentine’s Day? That was too much, especially since Saguru probably didn’t even return his feelings.

And what if Saguru didn’t even remember the bet? His behavior showed that he didn’t truly care too much about chocolates. What if Kaito just showed up on Valentine’s Day and handed him chocolates, and Saguru thought it was a love confession, when Kaito was just honoring their deal? Kaito was not ready to confess just yet, or ever. He was a thief and Saguru was a detective, after all. What could he do?

Maybe I could insult him, Kaito thought gloomily. But how? He’d probably assume I was a tsundere if I just called him an idiot and walked away, or something like that. Besides, I’m more creative than that!

An idea suddenly hit Kaito, and he brought out a book titled “The Language of Flowers”. Flipping to the 54th page, he saw something written there.

Kaito grinned. He had a plan that no one would see coming.

Saguru had almost forgotten about the bet he made with Kaito until Valentine’s Day came and Kaito walked into the classroom, carrying a box of chocolates and a bouquet.

“Kuroba-kun!” One of their female classmates called out, handing out a box of chocolates. “I-I bought these for you!”

Kaito grinned casually. “Ah, thank you, Takenouchi-san!” Taking her chocolates, he placed them on his desk as he walked by, heading for Saguru’s. “Hakuba. Did you not know that the day I’d have to give you chocolates was on Valentine’s Day?

No, Saguru hadn’t realized that, and he was surprised to learn that Kaito hadn't either. “No, I did not. Are those for me?” He raised an eyebrow, looking at the box.

Kaito blushed a bit, though he tried to hide it. “Well, you said you liked Suzuki Chocolate, but I didn’t have the money to buy that, so I found their recipe and made it myself.”

“Ah,” Saguru responded, smiling. “You put in that much effort for a bet?”

Kaito nodded. “And these are for you as well.” As he handed over the bouquet, Saguru’s eyes widened. Kaito had made a whole bouquet for him? That wasn’t part of the bet at all.

“Foxglove, insincerity,” Kaito quickly said. “Scarlet auricula, avarice. Turk’s cap, hatred.” When Saguru gave him a confused look, Kaito clarified. “It’s an insult bouquet.”

“...Oh,” Saguru acknowledged. He… didn’t know that existed.

“I thought you’d get the wrong impression, with me giving you chocolates on Valentine’s Day and everything,” Kaito was still talking pretty fast. “So, uh, I wanted you to know I hate you. And I made a bouquet for that.” The blush on his face was still visible. In fact, Saguru thought it had grown some.

“Well, thank you,” Saguru smiled. He set the bouquet down beside his desk. “For the homemade chocolates and the lovely bouquet.”

Kaito’s blush seemed to get even darker as he hurried back towards his seat.

During the lunch break, Saguru pulled Kaito away from his numerous boxes of chocolate and towards the roof. Kaito quickly walked after him, complaining about rude detectives and their apparent need to kidnap people. Once on the roof, Saguru closed the door behind them and faced Kaito.

“Kuroba-kun, do you like me?” Saguru asked.

The pretty blush Kaito had before seemed to return almost instantaneously. “What? No!”

Saguru sighed. “If you truly didn’t like me, you wouldn’t have given me a bouquet to express your hate. You also would have bought cheap chocolates, even though I like the expensive type. You went too far in your attempts to express your dislike of me that the truth is becoming quite clear. You, Kuroba Kaito, Kaitou Kid, have feelings for me.”

Kaito didn’t even deny the Kid accusation like he usually did, just turned away. “Fine, let’s say I do like you. Does it even matter?”

“Yes, it does,” Saguru confirmed. When Kaito turned towards him with wide, shocked, and fearful eyes, Saguru quickly clarified. “Because I like you too.”

Kaito blushed more. “Oh. Uh.”

“And because of this, I wanted to ask you if you wanted to enter a relationship with me.” Saguru held out his hand. “Or, well, in simpler terms. Kuroba-kun, do you want to go out with me?”

Kaito, staring at Saguru’s hand, suddenly chuckled. “By shaking your hand?” He suddenly darted forward and pressed himself against Saguru in a hug. “Yes, Hakuba,” he whispered. “I do.”

Saguru froze for a moment, not sure how to process the fact that Kaito was hugging him , but eventually settled for draping his arms around the smaller boy. “I’m glad.”
