Work Text:
Book finds herself unbalanced and shaky, barely able to keep herself up.
Pillow finds herself tranquil and calm, following the tune humming through her head and letting her limbs weave through the notes.
How does Pillow do this so easily? Book wonders, looking up at her. Except, she wasn’t even looking back. Instead, Pillow’s eyes were closed gently as she depended on the music that echoed through the hotel room to guide her.
Book whines slightly, glancing back down at her feet and trying to follow Pillow’s. It wasn’t an easy feat, she would easily trip and fall with one wrong move.
Their hands were held together, not by a tight grip, but they interlocked enough so they wouldn’t separate easily.
With the way they were so close to each other now, you’d assume they were in love or something. Probably, but neither of them would admit it yet.
Pillow spins the both of them around slightly, and Book yelps, not expecting the sudden movement. This is what finally causes Pillow to open her eyes and notice… how much of a mess the other object was.
She giggles the moment her eyes laid on the hardcover novel.
“D-DON’T LAUGH!” Book stammers, letting go of both of Pillows hands and stepping back. Pillow doesn’t seem phased by this action.
She puts a hand on her chin, observing. “You’ve really never done this before, have you?” She questions, gesturing to the air lightly.
Book crosses her arms, just wanting to shrink into herself and disappear. Maybe then she wouldn’t have to face this embarrassment. “No… I told you that before.”
“I didn’t believe you. Everyone’s danced once in their lives, haven’t they?”
“Maybe when I was a kid or something… years ago.” She pouts. “I would’ve been able to in Freesmart if they hadn’t just…” Her voice trails off, and Pillow stops her before she has any chance to continue.
“Stop thinking about it. You worry too much about them.” She turns to the speaker on the other side of the room, connected to a phone. She walks over and picks up the device, scrolling through songs, but not pausing the music.
“You know, dancing’s not as complicated as you’re making it out to be.”
“There’s so many steps!!” She immediately stammers out, defending herself. “You’re doing it so easily and- and you know exactly what to do! I’ve never done this before! I don’t know what order to do anything in, or how fast- or even what I’m doing!” This was true, she felt completely lost on what to do. Like she was taking a test she hadn’t studied for. But she knew almost everything, she was a dictionary for word’s sake!! How come she couldn’t understand this?
“As I said, complicated.” She states bluntly. “There are no instructions for dancing. You do what comes to your head. Follow what the music tells you. You go along with it in the ways that make you comfortable.”
Book raises an eyebrow. “That explains almost nothing.”
Pillow sighs. “Trust your gut. Move in the ways that feel right, even if you find it embarrassing.” She hums, pressing on one of the songs. The song that was currently playing abruptly stops, and a more upbeat, friendly tune starts filling the room.
Pillow offers a hand to Book once again, after setting the phone down. “Do you want to try again?”
Book hesitates, looking down at her feet and back at Pillow’s hand.
“...Ok.” She takes it.
I’m sitting alone
Pillow pulls her closer, earning a small yelp from the other object.
Nobody to hold
Pillow’s movements are graceful, and she rocks her shoulders slightly.
The people in here are crazy
Book still feels nervous, as stiff as a rock. Pillow puts a hand on her shoulder, guiding her to turn with her. She struggles to follow, but doesn’t fall, so that’s good enough to her.
Faking a smile now
Book stares at Pillow, and finds comfort in her gentle gaze. Unlike herself, she seems more calmed and content. Maybe she was a stumbling mess, but Pillow knew what she was doing. She felt orderly, organized. And Book really liked that about her. Somehow this contrast between them was what made them mesh so well together. Book’s nerves slowly settle.
Been here for a while now
For once, she begins to feel the rhythm of the music. She’s still not going by her own accord of course, she’s mostly following in Pillow’s footsteps, but she’s finally connecting her movements with the song.
I’m fed up with this, I just wanna go home
She takes a deep breath, realizing she’s been holding it in for a while. Pillow seems satisfied with how she’s finally doing now.
But damn, that girl
Pillow’s eyes catches Book’s. Pillow smiles, and Book’s cheeks are dusted a light pink.
Set me up with her
They both pause, for just a moment. Waiting for the beat to continue. The room feels warmer than before, and the feeling of anticipation lingers between them.
Book isn’t sure what she’s supposed to do next. Here comes that lost feeling again. But yet, this time, there’s something in the back of her mind that tells her she’ll figure it out.
The sound of drumming.
Dance with me, baby!
As the chorus plays, Pillow lets go of Book, spinning around and throwing her hands up in the air. Book watches in amazement. She’s beautiful, isn’t she?
Dance with me baby, let’s get lost right here
Book takes a short stride, spinning just as Pillow did. She stops and opens her arms slightly, only to pull them back in again close to her heart as she takes a step back. Everything felt so… different. But it was so natural.
Dance with me baby, dance with me babe, under the chandelier
Pillow is letting herself go, finding the rhythm in her own heartbeat and doing her own thing. Yet she still keeps a watchful eye on Book.
Dance with me baby, dance with me baby!
Now, Book wasn’t being graceful in the slightest, nor did her dancing look any good, but she was enjoying herself. Finding her own way to get involved. And Pillow loved to see it.
Don’t turn me down for him
She carefully dances her way back up to Book and takes her hand. Book seems surprised but quickly follows along and wraps her fingers around Pillow’s.
What does he have,
Pillow raises their hands up, and adjusts her own so that she’s only holding Book’s pointer finger.
that I can’t give to you, girl?
Book takes the hint and spins herself around, giggling. She trips on her own foot, and yelps quickly as she realizes she’s falling.
Pillow very easily catches her in her arms, but she seems surprised about this action. She stares at Book in the eyes with a confound look. Like she didn’t originally mean to catch her, it just happened involuntarily.
♪
They’re both breathing heavily, Pillow a little less so.
And then, Book smiles. She starts laughing to herself, an overwhelming feeling of joy surrounding the air.
Pillow seems confused at this, but soon enough she’s laughing with her.
She carefully picks Book up so she’s standing on her two feet again, both of them a giggling mess.
Book interlocks both her hands with Pillow’s, humming happily. Without a word, she holds her breath and leans onto her, closing the gap between the two.
Pillow blinks, shocked, but closes her eyes and melts into the kiss, unable to keep herself from smiling.
