Work Text:
Nagisa and Kaoru haven't spent a lot of time recently; they can't due to both units being extremely busy with their own activities. They bump into each other occasionally when they both arrive at their dorm late at night after a tiring day but by then, they're both too tired to even uphold a conversation; it's a quick 'how are you?' 'Goodnight, sleep well' before they are quick to change into their pyjamas and doze off.
It's very rare that they do get to spend time together, and when they do, they are either sitting on their shared couch, watching a movie, with Nagisa's head resting upon Kaoru's shoulder and a blanket is covering their lap as they hold hands underneath it or exchanging kisses, holding each other close and whispering sweet nothings to one another. It's not a lot compared to other couples who get to see each other more, but it's more than enough for Nagisa and Kaoru as they both await a free day to spend their time like this, it makes it all worthwhile in the end.
Today, both of them get the chance to finish their activities early. They're both rushing to their dorm, eager to finally get to spend time with the other. They're panting and they're slightly sweaty when they meet each other due to just finishing practice and running to get to their dorm but they both greet each other with wide, loving smiles and tight hugs.
"Nagisa," Kaoru breathes out as he pulls back from the hug and tucks a loose piece of Nagisa's hair behind his ear, "Nagisa, Nagisa, Nagisa," Kaoru is repeating, loving the way his name slips out of his mouth, loving the name his name just fits so perfectly coming out of his mouth and Nagisa's eyes crinkle, he knows why Kaoru is repeating his name and his heart thumps against his ribcage. He feels the exact same way.
"Kaoru," Nagisa replies. Kaoru is smiling wide, the mere mention of hearing his name come from Nagisa's mouth is sweet, it's like a song and Kaoru knows he won't ever get tired of hearing it.
Nagisa laughs, looking around, seeing that neither of them unlocked the door and they're still standing outside of it and this realisation causes Kaoru to laugh as well.
"Let's go inside and get dressed. I want to take you somewhere," Kaoru states, grabbing Nagisa's hand as he uses his other hand to find the dorm key in his pocket. He could find it easier if he hadn't grabbed hold of Nagisa's hand but he doesn't want to and Nagisa only squeezes his hand in return. Eventually, Kaoru finds it and leads the two inside where they reluctantly release their hands.
Kaoru leans forward and pecks Nagisa's cheek and he can feel Nagisa's eyes crinkle under his lips, a smile adorning his face.
"Hurry, get changed," Kaoru says and they leave to go to their own rooms where they do exactly that.
Ten minutes later, they both come out of their room, out of their sweaty clothes worn throughout the day, and they grabs their coats and walk out the door as Kaoru leads the way.
"Where are we going, Kaoru?" Nagisa asks, he's curious as when they do have time to spend together, they never go out. Nagisa doesn't really care where they're heading to, any place is good with Kaoru by his side.
Kaoru turns and winks, "It's a surprise. You'll love it though, I promise." It ends at that and Nagisa hums quietly as they take a short walk away from their apartment.
When they do arrive at their destination, Kaoru grabs Nagisa's hand and drags him close, "We're nearly here, just up this pathway."
Following the pathway, Nagisa sees a picnic blanket laid out on the grass with a picnic basket pinning the blanket down. Looking forward, Nagisa can see the most beautiful view he's ever seen. The sky is a mixture of oranges, pinks and yellows, it's like a painting and there's limited clouds on show so you can get a clearer view of the sunset. There's a couple of birds perched in the apple tree where the blanket lays and they occasionally tweet but it's peaceful and other than that, there's no other sounds. There's not even anyone else there and Nagisa smiles, he gets to stay in this beautiful place, just him and Kaoru. Not forever but for the time being and it's more than enough.
Nagisa can also see the beach is below them and he can see the waves gently brushing against the sand, there's a slight wind too but it adds onto the picturesque scene in front of them.
Nagisa turns to his left and goes to thank Kaoru for bringing him to such a place like this. Despite it being a short distance, Nagisa had never been here before and he hopes they can both come here again in the future. As Nagisa opens his mouth to thank Kaoru, Kaoru puts his finger over Nagisa's mouth and then moves it to gently brush Nagisa's cheek and he closes his mouth.
"It's okay, you deserve it. Come on, I asked the rest of UNDEAD to prepare this for us, we should eat up," Kaoru finishes and moves them to the blanket and opens the basket.
Looking inside, he sighs. He should've been more specific by saying what he wanted in it, instead he said 'anything is fine, put what you'll think we'll like.' That was a mistake as there's a whole lot of meat in there. In fact, that's the only food in there and as Nagisa peeks, he laughs. It was just like the members of UNDEAD to put it in there.
"Sorry about that, Nagisa." The aforementioned boy laughs and shakes his head, "it's fine Kaoru, I don't mind."
When Nagisa goes to see what drinks are there, he laughs even more after seeing tomato juice. Kaoru sighs again.
"Rei... Of course."
When looking through it more, they find other drinks and in another compartment, they find a couple of pancakes as well as a chocolate bar and they both gleam - their favourite foods.
Kaoru huffs a laugh, "At least they weren't completely useless," and takes out some of the cooked meat and starts to munch on it and Nagisa does the same and moves close to Kaoru, leaning his head on his shoulder and watches as the waves come in, and wash back out.
After eating more than half of the food - not all of it as the meat got boring after a while and Kaoru makes a note to just do it himself next time even if it wasn't that bad.
They're laying down now, hands reaching out for each other as they're both huddled together. They're looking up at the sky, it's a midnight blue, Nagisa prefers the sunset colours though. Kaoru fits in better with the sunset, it's like he is the sunset and seeing Kaoru stand in front of it earlier made Nagisa reach for his phone and snap a picture which left Kaoru turning around and scrambling to get the phone out of Nagisa's hand.
"Nagisa! At least take a picture when I know you're going to, I look messy."
Nagisa has a smirk on his face and quickly takes another picture as Kaoru lays on top of him and it has Kaoru burying his face into the side of Nagisa's neck and blows cool air onto it, leaving Nagisa in a fit of laughter and stretching his neck to get away from Kaoru's mouth but Kaoru only chases him more.
"Kaoru," Nagisa breathes out in between laughs, "please. It's not fair! I'm... I'm sorry, okay?! You know I'm most ticklish there..."
Kaoru sits back, pinning Nagisa's hips down so he's still unable to move.
"That was mean of you Nagisa."
Nagisa has a shy smile on his face and replies, "I'm sorry Kaoru, I won't share it, you just looked really beautiful right there. I'll only have it as my homescreen."
Kaoru huffs, he can't win against Nagisa when he's underneath him and when he just looks so cute and innocent. It's a weakness of Kaoru's - he just can't say 'no' to Nagisa and can't even stay mad at him for a prolonged amount of time.
Kaoru eventually gets off him and gets up to lay down next to Nagisa.
"Hey, Kaoru. I really had a lot of fun tonight," Nagisa says and brings Kaoru's hand to his face to kiss the back of it and then holds it down on his lips, leaving peppering kisses all across his hand.
Kaoru turns to face him.
"I'm glad you did. I'm sorry it wasn't anything big, it was hard to plan when we hardly get to see each other and having so many activities left little time to plan and-" Kaoru breaks off his sentence as Nagisa is bending over the top of him, stopping Kaoru's rambling as his lips brush against the other's.
"Kaoru. It was fun, it was one of the best times I've had. It was fine, it was perfect. Don't worry about it, okay?"
Kaoru nods in response and Nagisa lays back down and returns to his original position.
Nagisa points to the sky, "Hey, Kaoru!" He exclaims, "that's a shooting star, right?"
Kaoru also looks up to see a bright star fly across the sky and it leaves a bright trail behind it and they both continue to look at the sky, even when the star has long disappeared.
"Did you wish for anything, Kaoru? Tell me what you wished for!" Nagisa gets up excitedly, eager to hear Kaoru's wishes.
Kaoru slowly gets up too and brushes Nagisa's cheek as Nagisa still awaits his answer.
"That's not how a shooting star works, Nagi. I can't tell you otherwise it won't come true. Plus, everything I could wish for is already here, in front of me."
A pink dusting covers Nagisa's cheekbones before he's swatting Kaoru's hand away and says, "That's so cheesy!" And Kaoru bursts out laughing.
"Maybe so, but I still meant every single word."
Kaoru leans forward and catches Nagisa's lips in a small kiss.
"I love you so much, Nagi," Kaoru says as they slowly part.
"I love you, Kaoru," Nagisa replies and they catch hold of each other's hands.
Even though Kaoru believes wishing upon a shooting star and then saying the wish out loud would mean the wish wouldn't come true being just a children's myth, subconsciously, he thinks saying it out loud would stop it from coming true.
It doesn't matter what his wish is, he's never going to say it. It's for the future to decide if it comes true or not.
The only thing that matters right now is the man in his arms as they continue to sit and look towards the beach, exchanging meaningless whispers to fill the void although it doesn't need to be filled as the silence is perfect for the two of them.
They stay there for the rest of the night, savouring their time together.
When they pack up and return to their dorm, Kaoru exchanges one last longing look with Nagisa and falls asleep soon after.
He hopes the future will listen to his wish.
