A historical urban fantasy romance. Rated Mature due to: alcohol, depictions of murder and corpses.
Silvio Campana, failed vampire hunter, travels to the seaside city of Boccacarpa, chasing the ghost of his recently-murdered father. There, he makes fast friends with Felicien Patenaude, hotel owner and mysterious bachelor. Unbeknownst to him, Felicien is a vampire, and will stop at nothing to further his own goals. How long will their goals align? Will Silvio survive long enough to get his revenge?
"Not long after sundown, the screaming started, just as predicted.
We rushed towards the noise, sharpened wooden stakes in our hands. My father carried the lantern, and it swung wildly as he ran. Our footfalls pounded against the damp earth, and I nearly slipped in the mud.
I managed to catch myself against a branch at the last moment, but my father didn't stop. I caught a glimpse of his face in the dim light. He was wild-eyed, more animal than man, white hair and teeth made orange by the lantern.
Panting, I followed as best I could as the light grew smaller and more distant before me. After a few dozen paces, it stopped.
I saw it then.
