Work Text:
It all started with a yawn.
Megamind immediately noticed, glancing over from his spot on the sofa. Roxanne stretched her arms above her head at the kitchen table, completely oblivious to his gaze as she went back to her report.
They had gotten into the habit of working in the same space together recently, often times in different spots while they did their own projects. Roxanne thought it was nice, knowing that she could be with someone in complete silence yet know that they were still connected.
At this point they had been working through the night, an array of coffee mugs empty and forgotten all over the living room and kitchen.
“What was that?” Megamind inquired, eyebrow raised at her knowingly.
“What was what?” She kept her eyes on the screen, still typing away.
“That, yawn.” He set his pencil down, now peering at her from the edge of the couch.
Roxanne shrugged vaguely, unsure of his point. After a beat of silence, Megamind begrudgingly went back to his blueprints, looking over at Roxanne suspiciously every once and a while.
It happened again soon after, her yawn a bit louder this time.
“That!” He pointed towards her, “That was another one!”
She shook her head, continuing to work. “No,” she tried to say but the word was elongated as she interrupted herself mid yawn.
Megamind huffed at the sound, not hesitating to move his pencil and papers to the side, organizing them quickly. “That’s it, you’re going to bed.”
“Nooo, I have to finish this by morning!” Roxanne cried, ending her sentence once more with a yawn.
He had started to tidy up, picking up mugs and setting the couch pillows in their spots. “You can wake up early if you really need to but you’re sleepy, it’s better to have some sleep than none at all and you know it!”
She exhaled sharply, the sound disapproving. “I’m not moving,” she cradled her laptop closer, typing even faster as if determined to get all of her work done right then and there.
He detected the movement out of the corner of his eye, quickly retorting, “You’re going to bed and that’s final!”
Roxanne glared at his back, suddenly very conscious of how far he was from her in the living room. A plan was formulated in an instance.
“Make me,” was all she said, defiance in one breath.
Her words made Megamind pause, head turning owlishly at the phrase. “Excuse me?”
His eyes struck an odd shine, but she refused to back down. She crossed her arms, staring back at him just as intensely. “You heard me.”
There was a pause, before Megamind downright growled, the sound making Roxanne’s heart tremble and almost squirm in suspense. He dropped the mugs on the couch, gaze hardened as he began to stalk towards her.
“You have got to be kidding me! Roxanne Ritchi, you will not fight me on this!”
Despite his apparent fury, she knew that he was only worried about her. She hadn’t been able to sleep well lately, but that only pushed her to keep going until all of her work was done. Plus, she couldn’t help it if he was absolutely adorable when he was raving like this.
She tried to stifle her smile, watching him get closer. There were only a few more steps dividing them. Just before he could step foot out of the living room Roxanne finally cracked, cackling as she dodged around Megamind and ran behind him.
There was a new bound of energy thrumming through her veins and she wasn’t going to let it go to waste.
He turned just as she whipped past him, mock disappointment on his face as he huffed, “I care about your health Roxanne, is that so bad?”
Shaking her head ‘No’, she grinned at him, but that didn’t stop her from going around the living room. He was on her heels in an instant, rounding the corner of the couch with ease.
Roxanne snorted, dashing into the kitchen. “It’s bad if it keeps me from my deadlines Megamind!” He groaned as he shadowed her, seeing that she had placed the dinner table between them.
They followed each other, going around the table and promptly pacing left and right, the motion dizzying as she kept herself parallel to him at all times. They went round and round, until finally Megamind doubled back, going right to Roxanne’s left. Now, he was closing in on her.
She let out a shriek of laughter, the noise bouncing off the walls as she ran out of the kitchen, instead choosing to go up the stairs. Her footsteps thumped loudly on each step and she could hear Megamind’s echo behind her. She barely stumbled into the bedroom, just enough to let him catch up to her. He tried grabbing her hand, but she swiftly pulled away, rushing to their bed.
She turned around, only to see Megamind had retreated into the bathroom.
“Ha ha!” She exclaimed, almost triumphantly.
The victory didn’t last long though, as Megamind exited with a familiar purple gummy in hand. Roxanne’s eyes widened, realizing what he had grabbed.
“No, not fair Megamind! You can’t make me take that!” She pouted, pointing to the melatonin.
“Can’t I?” He purred, a sharp smile on his lips as he got closer. Roxanne stepped back, eyes on the gummy. Before she could make a start for the door, he pushed her onto the edge of the bed, her back bouncing against the mattress as she scrambled to get away.
In a last-ditch attempt, Megamind stuffed the gummy between his teeth and bent forward, struggling against Roxanne to pin her arms down. Melatonin did not have the same effect on Megamind like it did on Roxanne, which he was taking full advantage of.
Even though he was usually so careful, in this instance all sense of boundaries left his mind as he forced her arms above her head, switching his hold until both of her wrists were in one hand and the other could be used to tickle her.
She screeched in delight once she realized what he was doing, instantly snapping her jaw close. Megamind continued to tickle her, digging his fingers into her sides and the junction of her collarbone and neck.
“Open your mouth Temptress!” He cried around the gummy, amusement highlighting his eyes.
Grinning at him with her teeth closed shut, she shook her head. “Ne’er!” The “v” was lost as she couldn’t close her lips but the point was clear -
“Ha!” The tickling managed to get to her, a single sound escaping before she closed her mouth again, intent on not giving Megamind space to offer the gummy. He continued to tickle her, taunting her gleefully to just laugh so that it could finally be over.
Determined to win, she sucked in air through her teeth, a strange sound between a hiccup and a cackle coming out as a result from the relentless tickling. It was hard to keep up, it was quickly becoming a losing battle. Roxanne endured, trying her best to not react, but there was only so much she could take.
Finally, her resolve broke.
She guffawed, mouth open wide as Megamind tickled her, causing him to quickly grab the gummy from his mouth and almost drop it in her mouth. Roxanne noticed at the last second, choosing instead to move forward and deftly push him back. He lost balance, effectively crushing her as he fell.
It was only a moment, but it was enough to break the tension from their playful antics. Starting with Megamind's soft chuckle, it soon morphed into his iconic booming howls, which never failed to cause Roxanne to join the hysterics in glee.
He tried to get up, but slipped once again against the bedcover. Their laughter only got louder, the room seemingly resonating their joy. Their crinkled eyes met, the endearment clear as they simmered down from their game, reality sinking in.
Oh, reality.
They stilled, breathless, faces inches away from each other as he towered over her. She became instantly aware of how close he was, their heaving chests brushing against one other, his leg pushed between hers, the way the edge of the mattress dug into her spine.
Roxanne felt dizzy with anticipation, lips parted and breath quickening.
There was a moment before Megamind spoke.
“Will you take it now?” He begged softly, boring into her eyes. Hearing his tone, she couldn’t help but to nod, dutifully taking the gummy from his fingers with her teeth and chewing, eventually swallowing it.
Megamind chuckled as she did so, eyes dark as he looked down on her. “Was that really so hard?”
“Wouldn’t have been half as fun,” Roxanne giggled softly, a Cheshire grin growing on her face.
A beat.
Slowly Megamind leaned in, capturing her mouth with his. Roxanne made a noise with the motion, her back arching to get as much of the kiss as she could.
He hummed as he broke away, a blush dusting his face as he smiled and bit his lip. “You really are such a fighter Ms. Ritchi,” he crooned, earning him a lighthearted kick.
“That’s Roxanne to you, Mister Megamind!” She laughed all the same. He echoed, landing kisses on her forehead, cheeks, and ending with her nose. Roxanne couldn’t help but to beam at his actions, the warmth of affection thrumming pleasantly.
“You’re wonderful,” he whispered fondly, pulling her up, dragging his hand across her back as he did so.
They continued on to clean up, Roxanne taking the second gummy dosage as they finished. Working quickly, they put all of the discarded mugs into the kitchen sink and plugged in their devices for charging. Megamind made sure to put an alarm for a reasonable time before Roxanne had to be at work to give her enough time to finish her report.
The pair then climbed into bed, at this point Roxanne’s mind fuzzy with sleepiness. She buried herself in the hollow of Megamind’s neck, inhaling his sweet aroma. She sighed contentedly as he wrapped his arms around her, limbs tangled up in each other.
“Goodnight my dear Roxanne,” she could hear him mumble into the shell of her ear, but it was faraway, sleep taking her.
“Night, lovely Megamind,” she managed to whisper, feeling how his embrace tightened at the words.
Then, there was restful darkness.
