Kaito had to admit that Amuro Tooru, Bourbon, or whatever his name was, was intelligent. Kaito never expected for the PSB agent Kazami to dress up like Amuro while Kaito was dressed as Kazami. He never expected to go to the roof, only for handcuffs to close around his wrist. And frankly, it was terrifying, especially because of who that man was.
On the Mystery Train, Bourbon had tried to kill him. Kaito had been dressed as Sherry (really, what was with the alcohol names?), and Bourbon had wanted to kill her. With the young Haibara Ai’s voice speaking in his ear, Kaito repeated after her and hid in the back carriage, then flew off when the explosions started. The picture of Bourbon holding a gun straight at his head still remained, however. It was an image Kaito never wanted to see again. Bourbon had almost stolen his life.
When Kaito first saw Amuro Tooru attending his heist, he had been scared. Yet he played it cool, mocked his magic in an attempt to wound him and make him leave, but then… That just made him participate in the actual heist and call that PSB agent over. Never had one of Kaito’s plans failed so spectacularly badly.
Kaito thought he put on a rather good poker face throughout the heist, but Amuro closing the handcuff around his wrist was the last straw. He put on his poker face again, but felt prepared to almost shatter, because he was terrified, but also…
The last time Kaito had felt handcuffs on his right wrist was with Hakuba Saguru, his crush. He associated that feeling with fond memories, and now Amuro was trying to steal those memories away, destroy them, and Kaito hated that.
Now, flying in the air, away from the heist, Kaito knew only one thing.
He had to find Saguru.
Finding Saguru’s house was easy enough. It was an entire mansion, after all. Breaking in was a little harder, considering the cursed security systems the Hakuba’s decided to install. In the end, Kaito managed to get in, however, and flopped down on Saguru’s bed, waiting for the detective to return. He knew he had a case tonight, but he should be getting it done with soon… right?
It took an hour for Saguru to arrive, apparently feeling tired as he didn’t acknowledge Kaito’s presence immediately. Kaito heard Saguru’s footsteps echo across the room, and the sound of rustling paper, probably case files. Only after the case files seemed to be placed on his desk did Saguru seem to notice him.
“Kuroba-kun,” Saguru said flatly. “What are you doing in my room? In a Kid suit, no less?”
Kaito turned around in the bed and blearily looked up at Saguru. “...I wanted to see you.”
Saguru sighed, settling down in a chair. “Well, it looks like you want me to arrest you instead.”
“I had a bad night,” Kaito muttered.
Saguru raised an eyebrow. “The heist?”
“Yeah,” Kaito confirmed. “I don’t like Amuro Tooru.”
“So…” Saguru said slowly. “Some Amuro Tooru guy showed up and now you’re in a bad mood? That doesn’t make sense, Kuroba-kun. You usually don’t care. You didn’t even care this much when Hattori-kun tried to kiss you.”
Kaito winced at that. He did care, of course. He had wanted his first kiss to be with Saguru, after all. But true, it hadn’t been this bad. “Last time I saw him, he tried to kill me,” Kaito added on.
Saguru’s eyes widened. “Wha- is he some kind of criminal?”
“Don’t tell anyone,” Kaito warned. “I don’t know yet if he’s a criminal infiltrating the government or the government infiltrating a criminal.” He giggled. Wow, he really wasn’t thinking straight if he messed up that much. “I mean, a police officer infiltrating a criminal organization.”
“That, we can talk about later,” Saguru decided. “So this Amuro-san guy shows up at your heist. Then what?”
“He almost caught me,” Kaito admitted slowly. “He had a handcuff around my wrist and everything, and I didn’t like that.”
“Because he almost caught you?” Saguru raised an eyebrow. “You clearly picked yourself out, I don’t see why you would be this shaken.”
“Because he had a handcuff around my wrist,” Kaito whispered, looking away from Saguru with a blush on his face. “And I… He’s trying to steal away our moment together, Hakuba.”
Saguru seemed to freeze, and then he whispered, “Oh.”
Kaito turned back to Saguru and noticed that the other boy was blushing too. Could it be…? No, he just had to be embarrassed or something. No way he liked Kaito back… right? “I’m sorry,” he muttered, looking away again.
“What are you apologizing for?” Saguru questioned. “You’re saying you like me, right?”
Kaito nodded mutely. It was all ruined now. He would never be able to look at Saguru again, now knowing that the other boy knew about his feelings for him. He had come here because he needed to see Saguru again, but instead he was completely ruining their relationship. Why did he have to mess this up?
“I like you too, Kuroba-kun.”
Immediately, Kaito shot up and stared at Saguru, surprise rushing through his body. “ What? ”
“I like you too,” Saguru reiterated.
Kaito’s blush darkened. “I-I see.”
“Well, I’m not sure you’re in the best mental state to start a relationship with me at the moment,” Saguru pointed out. “So let’s wait for that in the morning. But for now…” He turned towards his desk and took something out of his drawer. A pair of handcuffs. Kaito swallowed. “You said Amuro-san was taking away your memories of that moment we had. So how about I give those memories back to you?” He smiled softly. “If you’re willing.”
“I am,” Kaito whispered. He held out his right wrist, and Saguru connected it to his left one. The British detective positioned himself so that Kaito could still lay down comfortably even with the handcuffs connecting them. “Are you not going to sleep too?”
“I can sleep in my chair,” Saguru said.
Kaito nodded mutely. He was too tired to point out there was enough room on the bed for both of them.
“You know, you never said that Kuroba Kaito and Kaitou Kid aren’t the same person throughout this whole conversation,” Saguru said slowly. “And well, you are still wearing the Kid suit.”
“Oh,” Kaito muttered. He took off the monocle. “So that’s why my eye was bothering me.” And then, tired, he laid his head on the pillow and quickly fell asleep.
The next morning, Kaito woke up to the smells of breakfast. Groaning, he sat up, then froze and stared at Saguru. “Oh fuck,” he whispered as the events of last night ran through his head.
“Well, good morning, Kuroba-kun,” Saguru acknowledged, much more pleasant than Kaito was.
“I confessed to you,” Kaito whispered in shock. “About the fact that I’m Kid, and, well, my feelings for you.”
Saguru nodded. “Yeah. Want some breakfast? I tried something more western this time. Eggs and bacon.”
“Yeah, sure, I’ll take it,” Kaito said, getting up. With disappointment, he noticed Saguru had disconnected his own wrist from the handcuffs, but the other end was still on Kaito.
Saguru handed him a plate and utensils, and Kaito gladly dug in, Saguru watching fondly. “Well,” Kaito finally spoke up. “About last night…” Blushing, he continued. “About the possibility of a relationship…”
“Ah, that.” Saguru smiled. “Well, are you in a better mental state now?”
Kaito nodded. “Yeah, I’d say I am.”
“Then, Kuroba Kaito,” Saguru began. “Will you go out with me?”
Kaito felt his heart speed up as he said, “Yes.”
