Work Text:
Vanessa sat in the kitchen, leaning against the counter, a mug full of coffee, enjoying her silence until Hailey walked in. She’d just come back from talking briefly with Jay, and Vanessa gave her a small look that went unnoticed.
“Hey.” Hailey greeted, as she pulled out the coffee pot.
“Hey.” Vanessa greeted back, placing her mug down on the counter. “That’s your second cup of coffee?”
Hailey raised an eyebrow at the question, making her a bit confused. “Yeah? Why?” She poured the coffee into the mug, preparing to take a sip
“No reason.” Vanessa reassured, she shrugged her shoulders before continuing. “I don’t know, I just thought it was weird. Considering you’re pregnant and all.”
Hailey nearly spit out her coffee at the statement. “What?”
Vanessa shrugged, taking another sip of coffee with a mischievous grin on her face. “Vanessa, I’m not pregnant.”
“You sure?” Vanessa asked skeptically, knowing she was lying. Hailey sighed in defeat, placing her coffee mug on the counter.
“How did you know?” Hailey asked, speaking a little quieter so the rest of the unit outside the door couldn’t hear their conversation.
“Oh please, I know everything.” Vanessa said wittily, only making Hailey roll her eyes. She opened her mouth to ask another question, before the two were cut off by Jay walking in the room.
“Hey ladies.” He greeted, moving over to the coffee pot.
“Good morning dad-to-be.” She said nonchalantly, Jay instantly raising an eyebrow at her statement. Vanessa couldn’t help but hold back a chuckle, before Jay turned to Hailey.
“You told her?” Hailey opened her mouth to answer, before Vanessa answered for her.
“She didn’t have to tell me anything. I already knew.” Vanessa stated confidently, placing her mug behind her. “You guys seriously forget I’m a cop. I literally investigate and over-analyze things for a living.”
Jay shook his head at the statement. “Okay, so what did you ‘investigate’ and ‘over-analyze’?”
“Well,” She started, “It’s a no brainer Hailey’s been puking her guts out in the bathroom lately.”
Hailey nodded her head at the statement, knowing it was true.
“You guys also come in later, and are always mumbling things to one another when you think the rest of us aren’t watching.” She added, “You guys are not slick.”
Hailey tried to stay serious, but couldn’t hold back the small giggle that she’d been fighting. “Whatever, just don’t tell anyone else, okay?”
“I don’t have to tell anyone else, we all know your little ‘secret’.” She said, air-quoting the word secret.
“Everyone does not know.” Jay chimed in, Vanessa tilting her head at his statement.
She opened the kitchen door, before walking out into the bullpen where she saw Kim, Kev and Adam.
“Hey guys,” Vanessa started to get their attention, “They’re having a baby!” She announced dramatically, the other 3 all looking around the room.
“What?” Adam gasped fakely,
“That’s crazy!” Kim added, and all Kevin did was throw his hands onto his face.
Vanessa turned back to the couple, gesturing her hand towards the other three. “My point exactly.”
“Oh, they know we know?” Kim asked, over hearing Vanessa’s previous statement. Vanessa nodded shortly.
“When did you guys realize?” Hailey asked, fighting back a smile on her face.
“When you stopped going for coffee everyday.” Kevin answered simply,
Kim thought about it for a moment, before responding, “I had a feeling, but then I saw Hailey talking to Voight, and she was suddenly placed on desk duty.”
“I just overheard you guys talking about it in the locker room last week.” Adam said, shrugging his shoulders, “Then I texted these guys, and it all pieced together.”
Hailey and Jay shook their heads, as they laughed along with the unit.
“But,” Vanessa started, climbing to sit on top of a desk that certainly wasn’t her own, “On a serious note, we’re happy for you guys.”
“Thank you guys.” Jay said gratefully. Hailey nodded, agreeing with this statement.
“You guys are the best.” She opened her arms to welcome all her unit members into a hug.
