Chapter 1: To Be So Lonely

Chapter Text

Castiel’s morning so far had been terrible.

First, Castiel slept through his alarm, he doesn’t know how he managed it but he did, and he woke up to twenty texts from his personal assistant asking him where he is and why he didn’t turn up to the meeting this morning. And another text from his agent, Balthazar, who was also angry at him for missing the meeting and informing him of a very important meeting he has in an hour and that a driver has been booked for him, alongside a warning that it is absolutely vital that he makes this appointment.

Secondly, his driver had been ten minutes late, taking from his time to get a full breakfast before the meeting, which Castiel informs Benny that it’s not acceptable and not to do it again, with the threat of being fired. Instead, he makes Benny take him to a McDonald’s drive thru, which Benny obeys immediately, not wanting to get fired as he needs this job.

Third, Balthazar seems to be in a sour mood, which causes Castiel to be in an even worse mood.

So yes, Castiel’s morning hasn’t gone very well so far and he’s a bit of a diva when nothing goes to plan.

“First, you don’t show up to the meeting about the killing off of your character, yes, if you had turned up you would have known that the meeting was about that. Secondly, you take your anger out on Benny who had a family emergency and needed to take his daughter to the hospital! And then you have the nerve to waltz in here, fifteen minutes late without a damn care in the world. You’re lucky I don’t just drop you.” Balthazar is not happy, and he’s talking loudly that he hurts Castiel’s head. Castiel pinches the bridge of his nose, blocking out yet another one of Bal’s lectures, knowing that the threat is empty (or at least he’s too far up his own arse to even think that Balthazar would get fed up with his antics) and that Balthazar just woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

“So, what’s this absolutely vital meeting about, Bal?” Castiel uses air quotes around the words Balthazar had said to him, not able to see what was so vital about getting Castiel to his office just to simply yell and scold him.

“So, you better be grateful for this because with the way you are acting lately, no one wants to hire you,” Balthazar doesn’t sound impressed, and yes, Castiel might be getting too big for his boots, but who can blame him? He was the lead in a very popular crime series for ten years. The Cruel Summer. It had been about a bunch of teenagers on their summer holidays, one of them gets kidnapped and they find themselves stuck in all sorts of danger. “You don’t need to audition; you’ve got the lead in a movie. You’ll play Jimmy in a new movie The Good Life.”

“I don’t have to audition?” Castiel looks at Balthazar, he might be good, but he’s never got a part without auditioning before.

“Nope. They actually contacted me asking if you was available, and what do you know? You are.” Balthazar hands him the script. “Read it over. Your first day is in three days. Good luck.” Balthazar dismisses him, gathering up his papers.

Castiel picks the script up, leaving the room and getting back into the car with Benny. The man looks at Castiel in the rear-view mirror but doesn’t say a word. Castiel doesn’t dare talk to him, not even to apologise, despite the fact he should, and he does feel the guilt eating up at him over the fact that Benny didn’t deserve the way he spoke to him this morning. But alas, Castiel is a stubborn man.

Benny drives him to his house, Castiel muttering a quiet thank you before exiting the vehicle. Benny doesn’t hang around to chat, just driving off as soon as Castiel exits the car. Castiel will admit he feels hurt, Benny usually stops and talks to him for a while before he leaves. Maybe he just needs to get back to the hospital. Castiel hopes he hasn’t pushed him away.

Going inside, Castiel sits on his sofa, the script in his hands. Feeling strangely heavy as he looks at it. Feeling like this is his only chance, he didn’t even realise that he had got so far away from who he once was. He didn’t realise he’d become like those big celebrities that thought they were better than everyone, he had always despised them and had told himself he wouldn’t turn out to be like that. And yet, here he is. And truth is, he isn’t even that big of a celebrity.

Looking at the script, he hates it already and he knows that he is definitely not going to like this film. It seems very cringy.

The moonlight shines down as Jimmy stands on the mountain, looking over at his new residence. [Dark atmosphere, calm music].

Jimmy: So, this is earth?

God: Yes. You remember the plan?

Jimmy looks at the him, nodding his head.

Jimmy: Yes. I remember. One month to find out what it’s like on earth. No using my powers, live like a human. Report back nightly.

[Lights out].

As Castiel sits with the script in his hands, he realises just how lonely he really is. He has no one to call his friend, really. They had all left him when he’d landed his first acting gig, not wanting to be friends with him in case he got too big headed, he had ferociously denied that happening but look at him now. No friends, sat alone in his house, driven away his driver (ha, how ironic, Cas thinks) and his agent isn’t too happy with him. Oh, and no one wants him because he’s too much of a diva. Rubbing his hands over his face, Castiel rereads the script and his notes.

It’s absolutely terrible, and Castiel grabs a pen, writing everything he hates about the script. Too cringy. No emotions. Castiel underlines some of the lines he despises before getting up, throwing the script into the bin. Deciding that maybe he should just give up acting. He needs to humble himself.

Grabbing his trench coat, he walks out of his house. Deciding he needs to go for a walk to keep his head clear. He walks for a while, walking through the park. Regretting putting his coat on with how warm it is. He’s sweltering and Castiel sighs, deciding he should probably go somewhere that has air conditioning before he passes out. He spots a café Cap-A-Deano, it makes him chuckle, wondering whether the owners name is Dean.

Walking in, Castiel is relieved to find that it has ac. The café is quite nicely decorated and also very minimalistic. Walking up to the counter, Castiel noticing that the menu is very messily written, but it suits the café. Reading everything on the menu, Castiel can’t decide what he wants, does he want something iced or something warm? The weather is warm so maybe he should have something cold, but he doesn’t feel like anything cold.

“Excuse me, sir? Would you mind stepping aside so I can serve the people behind you whilst you choose.” The kind red haired behind the counter says, and Castiel forgets that he doesn’t like being too big headed, and he snaps.

“Who the hell do you think you are talking to?! How dare you talk to me like that! I will not step aside just because some lowly human behind me wants to order! I was here first!” Castiel snaps, the woman looks at him shocked. She opens her mouth to say something, but a man walks out from the back, an angry look on her face.

“What the hell is going on here?”
