Work Text:
Scully walked down the corridor among the prison cells. With Skinner's help, she was given one last opportunity to see Mulder before tomorrow's verdict. She hadn't slept in 3 days, fearing her beloved would get the worse punishment. A few weeks ago, she gave up her long-awaited child, William. She knew she had lost him for life. She still hasn't come to terms with this loss, and at the same time she was aware that she may soon lose another person.
Tears come to her eyes, and she quickly tries to put herself together. Pretending to be a strong Dana Katherine Scully has always worked out well for her. Showing her weakness rarely happened. She was always okay, she never wanted mercy. She was fine.
But she has changed. Recent cases have outgrown her. She lost a few pounds, suffered from insomnia, and when she managed to fall asleep, she had nightmares. Her eyes were circled and her cheeks sunken. In the morning, she managed to put some natural make up on to cover all the signs of fatigue and helplessness and to divert attention from the reddened eyes, which have recently shed a lot of tears. "Is that goodbye?" she thought before leaving the house, and at the very thought she felt a squeeze in her stomach.
- 40 minutes and not a second longer - said the guard outside Mulder's cell. Scully nodded and went inside. The door closed, and she was standing in the middle of a semi-dark room.
Mulder was lying on the floor and when he saw her, he rose to a sitting position. Scully approached him and sat down next to him. Despite the twilight, she saw fresh marks of beating on his face. They were silent. She touched his cheek at the site of the wound.
- Does it hurt you a lot? - she asked when Mulder hissed. He shook his head and looked into her eyes. Today, for the first time, their gazes met each other.
- Just tell them the truth, Mulder. Tell them the truth, save yourself. Save us - Scully began to whisper. Tears came to her eyes again as she looked at the bruised face of a man who never gave up, who always fought to the end, who acted against the rules to solve the case. Mulder was always determined, brave. He believed in things that were inexplicable, unrealistic. Things people didn't believe in. But he believed. And that's why Scully loved him. For his passion and stubbornness. And now he was ready to die there. He gave up without a fight.
- I can't do that, Dana. It's over - he said. He put his hands to her lips and kissed her tenderly.
- Where is all that you had in you, Mulder? Where is your commitment, your struggle?
- Whatever I do, there is no good way out of this situation. They want to know a truth that I can't give them.
- And so, you just decide to give up? – a tear runs down her cheek.
- I have no choice.
- You have a choice. Mulder, the choice is the truth. The truth you've been looking for all these years. The truth for which we both risked our lives. The truth for which we lost everything. I have nothing left, Mulder. And when I lose you too, that's my end – Scully tries to convince him. She is honest with him and hopes that a visit here will make Mulder change his testimony. On the other hand, she’s known this man half her life and knows that he will do it anyway. - You don't even know how much I've missed you over the last few months —she finally falls apart and throws herself at him tightly, snuggling into his chest and crying, and he hugs her weaving his hands into her hair and inhaling the smell of her hair.
He missed it. Her, her touch, her smell. Scully was his woman. Her skepticism pushed him forward, to prove and show what she had always rejected. She was his constant, his touchstone. That type of person he could call in the middle of the night and she would be there. However, he knew that their story would not have a happy ending. Darkness would always follow them. And Scully didn't deserve it.
- I know what I'm doing, Scully. And now you have to believe me - he said as they broke away from each other.
- So, you've already decided - she sighed. She rose and brushed the dust off her knees.
Mulder got up as fast as the bruising pain allowed him and grabbed Scully's hand. She closed her eyes and bit her lips. He locked her once more in his embrace and sank her face into her neck. - I love you so much, Scully. I didn't even have many opportunities to tell you that.
- You've done it many times - Scully replied, looking into his eyes. - I know that if I hadn't been more than just a partner, a co-worker, maybe I wouldn't have been here now.
- Scully...
- I just want to tell you... Don't give up. Just as you always told me, and I listened to you. I didn't give up and I went through it all, and you were by my side - she said, holding her hands on his cheeks. - Change your testimony and we'll get you out of here.
- What did I do in my life to deserve you? – he smiles at her and slowly brings his lips closer to her. He kisses her gently, weaving his hands into her hair and deepening the kiss.
Scully is ready to let this moment go on. Months of separation, pain, uncertainty and longing. Longing not only mentally, but also physically. Longing for her Mulder. His touch, kisses, voice. Now they both stand in the middle of an empty cell exchanging kisses as if it were their last time. He kisses her forehead, cheeks, earlobes, nose, neck and she lets him go lower. He doesn't care where they are now, she wants him, he wants her. Scully touches his chest and wanders lower and lower with her hands, reaching his penis. Mulder gasps and pushes her towards the wall. He doesn’t stop kissing her and lifts up her skirt, pushing her panties aside. There is no time for foreplay. He lifts her up and enters her gently, and she hugs him and sinks her head into his neck. It doesn't take long for both of them to fly all the way to the stars. They have waited too long for this moment. They gasped into their faces, exchanging their own breaths as their foreheads touched. Mulder put Scully on the ground and helped her restore her earlier appearance. He smiled at her and kissed her as if it were the last time.
- I want you to know that you are the love of my life – said Mulder with tears in his eyes. Scully hasn't seen them yet. Mulder hasn't cried since being in prison. He didn't complain. Now he was standing there, looking at her, tears running down his cheeks.
- And you are mine.
Then the cell door opened with a bang and the guard went inside. - Time is up. We are leaving.
Scully looked at Mulder and knew it was over. She was aware that perhaps she was seeing him for the last time.
- Whatever happens tomorrow, we had today - he stroked her cheek and put his thumb on her lips, and she kissed it.
- Don't give up - she said, and left with the guard.
