Work Text:

Kaito sighed, glancing at the clock on the wall for about the fifth time in the past minute.  He knew Saguru said he'd be out late tonight, but some part of Kaito had hoped he'd return home before he had to go to bed.

Repositioning himself slightly on the couch, Kaito stared down at the book he was trying to read, attempting to focus on the words.  Saguru had seen it when he had been in the bookstore the other day and he had brought it home, thinking it would interest Kaito.

Saguru hadn't been wrong, the plot was very interesting.  Unfortunately, there was something else Kaito would rather be focusing on right now instead.  Except that something wasn't here, because there had been a string of seemingly unrelated murders recently capturing the time and attention of not only Saguru but Kudou and Hattori as well.

Kaito sighed, absently turning a page as he listened to the silence of the house, a wistful part of him envisioning the sound of footsteps on the front porch, keys in the lock, and Saguru's voice, calling out I'm home with that warm quality reserved for Kaito alone...

Shaking his head slightly, Kaito peered down at the page number.  Fourteen, and Kaito snickered quietly.  He had already read page twelve -

And there was no one around to get the joke.  Kaito heaved another sigh, slumping down against the pillows.  The pillows had been Saguru's idea, and he had spent so much time ensuring they matched the couch cushions...Kaito rolled his eyes slightly, brushing his fingers against one of them.  Baaya had rubbed off on Saguru more than he'd be willing to admit.

Maybe he should be using this time to plan another heist instead?  Kudou's Black Organization may have been taken down two years ago, but they still hadn't managed to uncover Kaito's own Organization.  The takedown of the other must have scared them, because they had gotten much more careful over the past couple years.

But there wasn't really a new target to focus on yet...Kaito had held a heist just last week, and Japan didn't get that many potential Pandora targets in.  At least not after six years of continuous heists.

...What time was it?

Kaito glanced over at the clock again.  Past one a.m., and no Saguru in sight.  This wasn't the first time it had happened, but...maybe it was just the fact that the case involved murder that had Kaito on edge.  Most of the time murder cases were handled by Kudou and Hattori, with Saguru doing private detective work.  But this one had garnered so much attention Saguru had been called in as well.

Kaito let out a huff of indignation at that thought.  He was supposed to be the one attracting the attention of detectives, not some murderer, thank you.

Deciding to attempt to read his book again, Kaito squinted down at the page, discovering the words seemed to almost be moving on the page.  Dropping the book on his stomach, Kaito rubbed at his eyes with his hands, trying to clear his vision.  Normally he could stay up late without any problems, but he had had to get up early this morning in order to get to one of his private shows on time.  Why people had parties so early in the morning was beyond Kaito.  Then again, he had never been a morning person to begin with.

Picking back up the book, Kaito stared at the words on the first line, failing spectacularly at comprehending what they meant.

At that moment, a flash of lightning filled the room, a quiet growl of thunder following it.  Glancing out the window, Kaito could hear the gentle pitter-patter of rain begin to fall.

He hoped Saguru wasn't out in this.  It always took forever for his suits to dry too...

Kaito didn't realize his eyes had closed until he opened them again.  The sounds of the rain was making him really sleepy...but Saguru had to be home soon, and Kaito wanted to see him before going to bed.

Even as the thought flitted into his head, Kaito's grasp on the book relaxed, and it fell against his chest.  There was probably time for just a quick nap before Saguru came home...and the quiet, steady tapping on the roof was soothing, lulling him into sleep.

Kaito's eyes slipped closed, and he drifted into the comfort of sleep.

-

Saguru fumbled with his keys in the lock for a moment, feeling immensely grateful that their front porch had a roof over it.  The walk from his car to the front porch had already been bad enough, and Saguru was looking forward to getting into dry clothes.

The door finally opened, and Saguru breathed a sigh of relief, dropping his keys back into his pocket.  Taking out his pocket watch instead, Saguru glanced down at the time.

Two seventeen, and twenty-four point zero eight seconds in the morning.  Kaito had probably gone to bed by now, he had been up early this morning...

The thought of his husband made the several past grueling hours melt away, and Saguru felt a warmth in his chest.  "I'm home."  He called softly, not expecting an answer.

He didn't get one, and Saguru peeled off his wet suit jacket, hanging it on the nearby coat tree and slipping off his shoes.  He would get ready for bed as quickly as possible, it had been a long day.

Walking into the living room on his way upstairs to their bedroom, Saguru paused upon noticing the lamp was still on, giving the room a warm yellow glow.  His eyes strayed to the couch, where he found Kaito was laying, a book open on his chest.

Kaito's eyes were closed, and he was breathing rhythmically, one arm dangling off the side of the couch.

Saguru chuckled slightly at the sight, moving closer to get a better look.  Kaito must have been more worried about him than he let on, to have tried to stay up until he got home.

Gently reaching for the arm that was dangling, Saguru laid it back on Kaito's stomach, brushing his thumb over Kaito's hand for just a moment.  Task accomplished, Saguru picked up the book off Kaito's chest, running his eyes over the title.

It was the book he had bought just a few days ago...Kaito really had missed him.  He would always deny it, but Saguru knew how sentimental and romantic Kaito could be at times.

As Saguru set the book down on the coffee table, Kaito stirred slightly, likely at having been shifted.  Saguru felt a warm smile fill his face as he leaned down, pressing a kiss against Kaito's forehead and running a hand through his hair.

"Sa..."  Kaito trailed off, evidently too tired to get past the first syllable of Saguru's name.

"That's right."  Saguru murmured, all stressful thoughts of the murder case fading to the back of his mind as he gazed down at Kaito's face.  "I'm home."

Kaito opened one eye halfway, turning his head slightly towards Saguru's voice.  "Good..."  Kaito mumbled at last, words slurred.  "Took y' long enough..."

Saguru chuckled again, lightly scratching at Kaito's scalp.  Kaito leaned into the touch, a pleased noise escaping him.

"You should be in bed right now, Kaito."

"Want'd...see y'u...mm..."  Kaito sighed in contentment at the attention, eyes closing all the way again.

"Now you have."  Saguru told him, continuing to pet Kaito's hair.  "Do I need to carry you up?"  He added in amusement.

Kaito didn't reply to that, so Saguru took it as a yes, scooping Kaito into his arms.  He was still damp from the rain, but Kaito didn't seem to mind, snuggling into his hold.

Saguru felt his heart flutter, and he dropped his head into Kaito's hair as he carried him up the stairs, breathing in the familiar scent of Kaito.  Something within Saguru relaxed slightly at the comfort of it all.  Home.  He was home.

Setting Kaito down on their bed, Saguru prepared for bed as quickly as he could, breathing a sigh of relief at getting changed out of his wet clothes.  That being done, he returned to Kaito and nudged him.

"Kaito...you need to get changed into pajamas."  He said quietly.

Kaito mumbled something slightly unintelligible in response, curling up on the bed.  Saguru huffed in amusement, soothingly patting Kaito's back.

"Come on, Kaito."

Kaito made a grumbling noise, rolling onto his back.

"Don't feel l'ke it..."

"That's too bad."  Saguru gently lifted Kaito into a sitting position.  "I'm going to take off your shirt, is that all right?"

Kaito gave a sleepy nod, eyes opening slightly as Saguru pulled on the pajama top.  He cooperated with Saguru long enough to put on the pajama pants as well, but the moment they were finished, he curled back onto the bed.

Saguru sighed slightly, giving up on the idea of Kaito brushing his teeth.  Even in his twenties, his husband still acted like a child at times...but he did look peaceful.

Saguru smiled softly at that thought, pulling back the covers and getting Kaito settled underneath them.  With everything they had gone through over the years, he was glad Kaito could still remain nightmare-free, save for a few rough nights.

Pulling the blankets over himself as well, Saguru let Kaito cuddle up to him, wrapping his own arms around him in response.  Finally letting himself relax all the way, Saguru closed his eyes.

No matter how rough or upsetting a case could get...Saguru took comfort in the fact Kaito would always be back home, waiting for Saguru's return.

...Except for the nights when Saguru was chasing him across rooftops.  But that was something no one except themselves needed to know about.

Notes:

That moment when you're just doing normal things, then a Hakukai idea pops into your head, so you immediately have to write it out...
Thank you to Pink Paradox for betaing!
If any of you have any Hakukai ideas/prompts for a fic, feel free to comment and let me know! I cannot guarantee I'll do something with it, but if I think I can/want to write it, I probably will. I'm always looking for new ideas for these two lovable
idiots XD
I'll also mention who suggested the prompt in the introduction notes to give proper credit :)
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it!
