Rainy Night

Summary:

Caught in a thunderstorm on the way home from a heist, KID makes an emergency stop at Hakuba's house.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

A crack of thunder exploded around him as KID was gliding away from another successful heist and KID grimaced.  He had checked the weather forecast right before the heist and it had predicted clear skies...what a time for his luck to abandon him.

Glancing beneath him, KID discovered he was nearing the house of none other than Tantei-san...and he would probably still be at the heist, wrapping up all of the reports and paperwork.  So it should be safe...

Rain began pouring around him, heavy and wet.  KID could already feel his glider begin to struggle against the torrent.

With another grimace, KID angled his glider down, managing to land on the balcony to Hakuba's room.  Great, he was already soaking wet.  With a sigh, KID folded in his glider, pulling out his lockpicks and opening the door to Hakuba's room.

Closing the door behind him, KID sighed again, this time in relief from escaping the downpour.  He liked rain and all, but only when he was ready for it, not when he was actively gliding.

"KID?"

KID froze.  That sounded a lot like -

Hakuba Saguru leveled an unimpressed look at him from where he was filling out paperwork on his desk.

"What are you doing."  Hakuba added, more a statement than a question.

KID shifted slightly, clicking his tongue.  "Um..."

With a put-upon groan, Hakuba gestured to his suit.  "You're soaking wet.  Why are you standing there dripping on my carpet rather than getting changed?"

"I didn't think you would be home."  KID offered, as if that explained anything.

Hakuba raised an eyebrow at him.  "So you planned to stand in my room, completely soaked and hope I didn't come home?"

"Listen, the rain just started, I didn't have time to form a plan."  KID grumbled, lips tugging downwards as he lifted up his drenched tie.

"Clearly."  Hakuba set down his pen, standing up and approaching KID.  "You'll need to take a warm shower, I can already see you starting to shiver."

Now that Hakuba mentioned it, KID did feel cold.  But -

"Tantei-san, I could hardly do such a thing when -"

Hakuba narrowed his eyes at him, reaching out and swiping KID's top hat in one swift gesture.  In another deft movement, he snatched KID's monocle off his face, ignoring the sound of indignant protest.

"There.  Now you're Kuroba Kaito and have no need to worry about being arrested.  Honestly Kaito, we've been over this - I'm not going to arrest you."

"I know."  Kaito sighed, feeling thoroughly exposed.  "But it's about the illusion, Saguru."

"Illusions do not take precedence over your wellbeing.  Shower."  Saguru commanded, pushing Kaito towards the bathroom.

"You are entirely unfair."  Kaito informed him as Saguru prodded him into the shower.

Saguru gave him a small, knowing smile in return for that comment, pressing a quick kiss against Kaito's forehead and exiting the room.  Kaito stared after him, feeling heat rise in his face.  So unfair -

The actual shower was utterly blissful after the earlier unwelcome, unplanned shower, and Kaito got so lost in thought he almost didn't hear Saguru knocking on the door to ask if he was all right.

Fighting down another blush as he got into the pair of pajamas Saguru had left for him, Kaito glowered at Saguru as the detective smirked, holding out a glass of warm milk.  He didn't say anything, but Kaito knew a silent I told you a shower would help was going through Saguru's head.

As Kaito settled himself on Saguru's bed, Saguru clicked off the lights, turning on a small bedside lamp instead.  The room briefly lit up as lightning flashed, a clap of thunder echoing after it.

"It's fortunate you did not attempt to continue gliding in this."  Saguru murmured, sitting down next to Kaito on the bed, sipping a cup of tea.

Kaito shot him an indignant look over the rim of his glass, finding he was too tired to make much of a protest.  "I know when something's too
much - even I wouldn't try to glide in a thunderstorm!"

Thunder cracked again as if to prove his point.

Saguru raised an eyebrow at him in response.  "Given your self-preservation record, this is the outlier rather than the expected."

Kaito hmphed in reply, flopping back against the pillows.  Saguru had no room to talk, given his occupation.

"What were you doing home already?"  He asked, starting to feel the edges of sleep creep up around him.

"...Well."  Saguru said after a moment, lips twitching as if he were holding back an amused smile.  "I saw it was going to rain."

Kaito groaned, turning on his side, away from Saguru.

"I'm not talking to you anymore."

"The forecast changed during the heist, I know you're very thorough about these things."  Saguru said soothingly, reaching over and running a hand through Kaito's hair.

Against his will, Kaito felt his body relax in response.  It was entirely unfair how comforting Saguru was...especially when he was attempting to be annoyed with him.

Saguru continued to placatingly pet his hair for a few moments, finally venturing to say something when it remained clear Kaito was going to remain silent.

"You were brilliant tonight."

Oh, so unfair.  Saguru hadn't bothered to mask the loving admiration in his tone, instead shifting his voice to a warm softness that always made Kaito melt -

With a resigned sigh that came out far more breathless than Kaito would have liked, Kaito turned around, leaning into Saguru's touch.

"I had you in mind with the reappearance trick."  He murmured, burying into Saguru's side.

Saguru paused for a moment, before shifting his hand down to Kaito's back, making long, slow strokes.  "I was wondering."  He commented softly.  "But I couldn't be sure -"

"Thought you would like solving it."  Kaito laid his head on Saguru's chest, listening for Saguru's heartbeat.  "Not that I want a detective figuring out my tricks..."

Saguru chuckled slightly, turning his head slightly to kiss the top of Kaito's head.  "Of course not."

They drifted into silence after that, Kaito drowsily watching the room flash with lightning, lulled to sleep by the steady beat of Saguru's heart.  A little bit later, Saguru shifted, clicking off the bedside lamp.  Wrapping his arms around Kaito, Saguru pulled him closer, and Kaito let him, closing his eyes again.  Maybe it had been a good thing Saguru was home after all.

"Goodnight, Kaito."  Saguru murmured.

"G'night..."  Kaito mumbled in response, drifting back into sleep.  Yes, it had definitely been a good thing Saguru had been home.

Saguru smiled slightly as he watched Kaito fall asleep, placing one last kiss on Kaito's hair before closing his eyes himself.

Kaito didn't need to know it, but...the real reason Saguru had rushed home so quickly was just in case the thunderstorm hit while KID was flying over his house.

After all, one never knew when a phantom thief would be in need of a friendly detective.

Notes:

I love them so much.
Red Tinted Night will hopefully be getting another update this upcoming week, if I can complete the chapter I'm currently working on. Fingers crossed ^.^;
If any of you have any Hakukai ideas/prompts for a fic, feel free to comment and let me know! I cannot guarantee I'll do something with it, but if I think I can/want to write it, I probably will. I'm always looking for new ideas for these two lovable
idiots XD
I'll also mention who suggested the prompt in the introduction notes to give proper credit :)
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it!
