Aveline couldn’t look him in the eye, and dread began to steal along his limbs like a cold poison. “What’s happened?”
She didn’t reply straight away, and his hands clenched into fists. He’d left his staff at home, because of course a prisoner wouldn’t carry such things, because he’d trusted her, but now his hands felt so empty without it, his fingertips itching with welling power- “Aveline, tell me.”
She finally met his gaze again. “It’s Anders,” was all she managed, and a roaring began in his head.
