how to sort of maybe kind of get fired

Summary:

Percy is having a typical Tuesday morning. Drooling with his friends over his hot boss and wishing the misted glass doors that separated their offices could spontaneously combust. But the Tuesday routine takes a dive when Jason says they need to have a meeting. About? ABOUT?! Hopefully he doesn’t get fired.

Group Chat: DILF Danger

Percy: okay it’s a fucking Tuesday morning???? How do you come to work looking like that?????

Leo: Not to be a raging bisexual but I need to be under that man so FAST

Percy: I’m sweating!!

Annabeth: Not to be a lesbian but can you two shut. up.

Reyna: he literally has bigger tits than me :| and I paid for mine!

Annabeth: REYNA???

Reyna: sorry annie, I may be dating you but I’m not immune to the delicious male that is our boss

Percy: he’s not even human tbh. I’m pretty sure I heard him talking in alien languages when I went to give him data sheets the other day

Leo: that was probably just greek :/

Percy throws his phone on his desk with a sigh, collapsing his chin into his palm. The phone buzzes against the wooden table but he doesn’t bother with it, instead narrowing all his attention to the misted glass doors that separate him from his gorgeous wonderful kind considerate completely unobtainable boss.

He’d been working as Jason Grace’s assitant for three years now, and despite having multiple offers and opportunities to move elsewhere Percy just could not bring himself to compose a resignation letter. He opens an office template document to start typing one up and then remembers Jason’s bright blue eyes and he immediately closes it. By now this job is more a hobby than any type of profession. He’s good at what he does, but not even gravity as strong as the sun could take him from this place.

The misted doors have always been a great point of contention for Percy, who can’t even stare unabashedly at his boss when he has nothing else to do. Jason with his black wire frame glasses and his shirt sleeves always rolled up. What is it about the man rustling paper, and slipping a pen between his teeth as he reaches for something that makes Percy want to put true meaning to the phrase “not safe for work”.

It had been three years of endless torture. Torture he could have put an end to countless times: when he was offered the position as head of “Literary and Modern Revolution” department where Jason would be on floor 10 in this very room, and Percy would be on floor 9 very very far; or the time he was offered a bigger office space on the far side of the building and declined before HR could ever get their whole spiel out; or the time— gods he’s pathetic.

But he can’t help it. He’s tried to dissolve, destroy, and decimate this crush a thousand times in a thousand different ways (get over someone by getting under someone; just go on a few dates; maybe work away from the office for a while– that last one had been two months of remote work while Percy pretended to visit his sick father on the opposite side of the country).

Now he’s entirely given up on trying to rid himself of the blushing bumbling mess of lovesick feelings that he’s tangled himself in and has instead taken to ogling and drooling with fellow co-workers who delight in their beautiful boss almost as much as him.

“Percy,” A deep gentle muffle.

Okay Jackson, business face on . He’s wearing your favourite colour today— cornflower blue because it matches his eyes— but that doesn’t mean you need to stare unashamedly. Remember to blink. Get out of there are quick as you can without being rude.

Pep talk over, he swipes a pen and a notepad from his desk before knocking softly.

“Come in.”

“Jason,” He smiles warmly

His boss hasn’t looked up yet, frown still furrowed between brown eyebrows, lips pursed. Mostly he’s concentrating but the way his hands grip the pages tells Percy he’s also frustrated.

And that triggers an onslaught of graphic images about all the ways Percy could help with that frustration if only he got the chance. And then he’s clearing his throat, and hoping the deep red his brown skin usually sports is not making an appearance today. Rather a little gaunt than too… alive.

“Would you be able to stay later today?” Jason finally mutters, glancing quickly up and then back to his work.

The laptop screen lights with a meeting reminder in the accounting department. He barely registers it.

“Yea sure,” Percy nods, checking his diary to make sure the dinner he’d scheduled with his mom was tomorrow and not this evening. All clear.

“What are we working on?”

The cornflower T-shirt is stretching across Jason’s chest, buttons a little too tight . Whoever had sowed them on may have used magical thread. No ordinary thread could withstand such pull. He was sure of this. He did enough sowing to be sure. The blonde hair, platinum right now, was buzzed short, the shortest he’d seen it in the three years he’s known his boss. Jawline still sharp, working as Jason clenches the muscles, r e l a x e s them. Left hand is drumming on the glass desk. Right hand is furiously typing something on the laptop.

A reminder buzzes on the phone sitting atop a precarious stack of sticky notes.

“Shit the meeting.” Jason hisses, standing up abruptly. “Sorry Percy, we can chat more this evening.”

“Uh- yea sure um-“ Is he about to get fired? Did his boss finally find out about the inescapable feelings, or the highly inappropriately named group chat? Maybe he was tired of Percy feeding the office pot plant all the stale coffee he never managed to finish?

“I just want to chat about–“ He pats his pockets for his keys, looking around distractedly as he tries to gather resources for the meeting, “chat about relationship development.”

And then he’s gone. And Percy Jackson is left standing in a quiet office with bright afternoon sun streaming over everything and directly into his chest. His heart is cooking. Being grilled alive. “Relationship development”? Oh he is absolutely getting fired.

Group chat: DILF danger

Percy: boss asked if I could stay late

Percy : he wants to talk to me about “rELaTioNsHiP DeVeLOpmEnt”?????

Leo: ………oh fuck

Percy: oh fuck???? That’s not what I needed to hear Valdez!

Annabeth: let’s not go into panic mode. Percy did he say anything else?

Percy: I’m getting fucking fired :’(((((((((

Reyna: he is not going to fire you :/ he loves you and you keep him afloat.

Leo: what was his tone? Did he seem upset?

Percy: he was distracted the whole time. Barely even looked at me :(

Annabeth: I don’t think he’s going to fire you. Just hear him out. Maybe it’ll surprise you.

Percy’s leg is bouncing so violently every few minutes it bangs into the underside of his desk. He doesn’t give a shit. Short from throwing himself into a pool to do a hundred laps, this is the only option. If he stops moving he’s scared he’s going to melt into the floor.

Reyna: yea I agree with Annie. Try not to panic. And keep us updated

Leo: want me to come up?

Percy: no. He’ll be back soon. Okay talk later. Pray for me xx

Time seems to crawl forward, minutes ticking over into hours, sun bleeding colour into the cloudy sky before it dips away for the night. He can’t count the amount of times he’s checked and rechecked the clock. What’s the difference between two seconds? Considered alive. His heart is beating so fast.

Black is quickly blanketing the sky, leaving behind it a trail of stars and street lights that seem to twinkle in unison. Oh how he wishes he could appreciate this view. But the knot in his lungs forces him to pace, to sit, rearrange the filing cabinets filled with everything but files, pace again. Maybe he should eat the lunch he forgot he put in the bottom drawer this morning. He takes one look at the rice bowl and shoves it right back into its place. Maybe another time. Time. What’s the difference between two moments? Collapse.

An elevator dings at the end of the hall. Percy falls so hard into his chair it makes his teeth rattle.

“Percy,” Jason Grace walks into their office, “Sorry the meeting ran so much later than I planned.”

“It’s alright,” He tries to smile, hopes it doesn’t come out as something pained. “Is everything good in the finance division?” He’d followed Jason into his office, standing by the door as if ready to leave, or close it. Stay.

“Mhm,” The boss hums approvingly, “Much better than I thought actually.” He sits down, heavy body in a well used chair. “Would you mind closing that for me and then coming to sit down.”

Percy takes a final deep breath as the door clicks shut and then he moves across the room.

Jason leans back in his chair, hands resting casually on the arm rests. He’s tracking every. single. step. Panther closing in on its prey. His eyes are so very blue. Like storm clouds holding too much lightning.

With another shaky inhale, Percy sits down.

“Hello beloved.” He smiles.

With a grin so gorgeous another universe is created, Jason wraps his arms around Percy and pulls him further into his lap. “Hello husband.”

“Everybody thinks I’m getting fired.”

A snort into his collar bone. “Why did you make them think that?”

“You don’t give me enough work. I have to keep myself entertained somehow.” He kisses that lovely platinum hair. Brushes fingers across the stubble trying to peak through. They both prefer the clean shaven looks but nightly stubble makes Percy’s skin feel electric.

“How many ‘threats of firing’ has it been this month?” Jason is still tucked into his chest, leaving soft kisses over the cotton shirt. His lips are warm. Gentle.

“Mhm,” He pretends to count on his fingers, “There was the one where you called me in for a ‘chat about office policies’ and the time I got an ‘email from HR’” He giggles, “Oh and the day you caught me pouring soda into the ice maker.”

“Stars you’re a terrible employee.” His husband mumbles, half laughing half sighing.

“My boss seems to think I’m worth keeping around.” He grins, lifts Jason’s head up so they can see each other.

Jason and Percy. Some sort of Cinderella. When the clock strikes six they turn back into lovers. Into them. Into Percy and Jason. Sweethearts. Husbands.

“More than worth it.” Jason smiles.

And then he’s kissing Percy. And Percy is kissing him. And nothing really matters as much as this. Not even maybe sort of kind of getting fired.

”Leo wants to come round this weekend?”

Delicious slash of teeth. Darkening blue eyes. ”I love to share.”

Definitely worth maybe getting fired.
