“Torao?” Luffy questioned as he followed after his husband, their hands tangled together.

They hadn’t been able to see each other in months. They had separated from each other four months ago, one of Law’s territories being under attack and thus he needed to go help them, and Luffy visiting Shanks in a different island. Normally, he would have followed Law, but the visit with Shanks had been planned weeks prior and Law insisted he could handle the issue himself.

Then there were rookie crews and marines attacking both crews at any given moment and yet another country to save, and by the time the Straw Hats arrived at the agreed meeting place, it had been two months since their original agreed time and two months since their nine-year anniversary of being married.

Luffy had been upset by this, but he had spent a majority of the day on a Den-Den call with Law; sometimes chatting each other’s ears off and other times sitting in comfortable silence as they did their own things. They might have not been together on the day, but they certainly spent it in each other’s company.

The minute they had met up, Luffy had wrapped Law into a tight hug and Law had sat on the deck of the Sunny and they simply soaked in each other’s presences. They had shared hushed whispers and stolen kisses before dinner was called and then spent the night cuddled in one another’s arms.

And then Law was waking him up just as the sun was rising, grinning a bright thing, eyes crinkled and glowing with joy – something he had never wanted anyone to see, had never expected to feel again, but Luffy had broken past his barriers and now Law was genuinely so, so happy. Luffy couldn’t say no to Law; Pirate King for almost eight years or no, Luffy was so weak for his husband.

That was how they ended up here, wandering through the forest hand in hand, sneaking as if they were some teenagers sneaking out in the dark and not the thirty-year olds they were. Luffy had Law’s signature feather-trimmed, navy cloak over his shoulders. Law had unclasped it from his own shoulders when Luffy had commented idly about how it was chilly and had thrown it over his shoulders. Years ago, it would have been drug in the ground, but now it ended just at his calves.

It was soft and it smelled like Law; so Luffy happily wore it.

Branches crunched as he stepped on them, the trees around them growing less dense and sparser. Luffy looked around, trying to figure out where they were going, but nothing really seemed special about this place. It reminded him of the forest he grew up in, and he could almost imagine his brothers rushing forward, laughing, and calling for him to hurry up.

Luffy’s smile grew into something softer.

“Torao?” Luffy asked once more, squeezing the hand in his, “Where are we going?”

“We’re almost there,” Law informed, tugging him forward as he stepped over a fallen tree. Luffy let Law pick him up by his waist as though he couldn’t hop over the tree just as well as Law could. He giggled as Law grinned and set him onto his feet.

The sun was still low in the sky, the forest around them lit by a dim glow. Luffy caught sight of a brighter glow just up ahead, and he frowned thoughtfully. They broke through the trees and into a clearing and Luffy paused, looking around in awe. There was a large circle where no trees grew, patches of flowers and rocks and moss spread throughout. Lanterns were hung up strategically, a basket placed onto one of the larger rocks, and Luffy turned to look back at his husband.

“Did you do this?” Luffy asked, “For me?”

“Of course,” Law smiled, squeezing his hand. “I’d do anything for you.”

Luffy closed the distance between them and pressed a soft kiss to Law’s lips, “All I want you to do is live for me,” Luffy said quietly.

Law pressed their foreheads together, and they stood there for a moment, savoring the moment. After a moment, Law pulled back and led Luffy to the rock with the basket. They sat atop the stone, Law opening the basket to show an assort of meat and rice and Luffy dug in instantly.

He wondered how long it took Law to plan this.

Once they were finished eating, Law pulled what looked like a shell from the basket and Luffy’s eyes zeroed in on the tone dial. He pressed the button and soft melody started to play. Luffy’s eyes widened slightly when he recognized it as the song Brook played at their wedding.

“May I have this dance, Trafalgar D. Luffy?” Law asked, offering a hand.

Luffy’s lips stretched into a grin as he slid his hand into Law’s. “Always.” He said and he meant it.

He would always be weak for Law; unable to say no, unwilling to part. He’s loved Law for so long, and it was like living a dream every day to be able to be so happy with this man and their respective crews.

(He had never thought he’d be happy again when Ace died. Sometimes Luffy felt as though he still had his blood thick between his fingers and he was never able to stop himself from heaving as he sobbed.

His crew was there for him; Law was there for him.)

Luffy’s hands slid to Law’s neck, Law’s own wrapping around his waist. When they had gotten married, Luffy twenty and Law twenty-seven, Luffy had been much shorter and hadn’t led the dance because of that – and because he hadn’t really known how to dance at the time. But now he had somehow gotten a growth spurt and was almost as tall as Law; it was still weird to not have to look up so much when he was with anyone from his crew or with Law.

Luffy tucked his ear over Law’s heart as they started to sway to the music. It was strange, he mused, just how much he adored this man. Years ago he hadn’t wanted romance of any kind; it hadn’t been important when he wanted to be Pirate King.

And then he had met Law; Law who saw him at his worst and still wanted him – still believed in him – Law who gave him that soft smile that had once seemed like a secret but was now known by everyone in their crews. Law who held his hands and kissed them as if they weren’t something that had only caused destruction, as if they hadn’t been covered in Ace’s blood. Law who had said I love you and made Luffy realize that yes, I love you too.

Romance had seemed unneeded, it was unwanted, until Luffy met Law and fell.

He still felt as though he was falling, and he loved it.

“Happy anniversary,” Law whispered, pressing their foreheads together as they swayed, swayed, swayed.

“I love you,” Luffy responded, eyes closing as he lived in the moment, in the love.

Law’s lips brushed against his, “And I you, Luffy-ya.”
