Work Text:

“Byleth, what is in the box?” Felix asked for the last time. Byleth smiled nervously at him and set the box down on the kitchen counter.

“Fe, don’t get upset,” Byleth said. Their hands held the box to make sure that what was inside wouldn’t shake the box too much. “Annie found something at work and we decided it was best if I bring it home.”

Felix’s eyes narrowed. He knew where this was going.

“And why were you picked to bring whatever is in that box home?”

“Because we’re…established,” Byleth stated firmly, like they had practiced. Felix raised an eyebrow and waved a hand, prompting them to continue. “Well, we have an apartment. We’ve been together for a few years now…”

Their voice trailed off and Felix’s eyes narrowed further.

“Interesting. May I finally get an answer to what is in the box?”

Byleth giggled nervously, the feeling of wanting to run away with the box sending tingles to their feet. They knew that this was either going to go extremely well or very poorly. They had only talked about getting a pet a few times and Felix had shot the idea down every time. Something about the furniture…

Byleth opened the box and they both peered in. Inside was a small cat, only a few months old. It had gray fur, with white feet and it peered back at them with green eyes.

“Byleth, are you serious?” Felix asked, stepping away from the box and crossing his arms. Byleth gave a small smile and picked up the kitten, holding it to their chest. They nodded and put on the pout they knew Felix couldn’t resist. “Oh, don’t even start.”

“Isn’t it cute, Fe?”

“Cute doesn’t matter, we’ve talked about-”

Felix’s rant was interrupted by the cutest meow. Byleth saw the ice in Felix’s eyes melt. They got him. Felix stepped closer to the pair and reached out to stroke the kitten’s head.

“Yeah, I guess it is pretty cute.”

“Can we keep it?”

“We have to take it to the vet first. See if it’s healthy and if it has a chip.”

“What if it doesn’t?”

“…I’ll think about it.”

Byleth cheered and danced around the kitchen with the kitten. Felix watched with a small smile, knowing that they would be keeping this cat.

Not sure how much I’m gonna be posting, but I wanted to share at least one story. Hope you enjoyed this short little one shot! 🥰
