Chapter 1: Interview with a Pilot

Chapter Text

We, Carl Canary and Viewtube famous documentary maker Doc BriskWalk are heading to the EDF (Extreme Defense Force for short) Base. And when we arrived there, we see six security members trying to ask us, one of whom was a dark-skinned Indian girl who recognized Doc as the man who made a documentary about the then-prominent trend of speculative evolution in media.

However, we were lucky to be granted entry to the EDF Base, where the first thing we see is an elderly janitor leading us to what appears to be a bunch of stairs and some interior sidewalks with rails on the wall. We then went up there and were treated to the sight of doors abound, one of which stood out to us due to it appearing to have been decorated with posters, which is something you would never expect in a military base. The janitor then inform us that a specific jet pilot by the name of Ms. Negrosa was living in that room that said door led to, so we decided to go on and give her a visit.

*Carl knocks on the door*

Ms. Negrosa: (*echoing*) 'Scuse me?

Doc: Uh, I'm here-

Ms. Negrosa: What are you, the paparazzi?! (OPENS DOOR) I don't think I would still be welcome to WAIT a minute, uh, sorry for the rude first impression!

Doc: 'Scuse me Ma'am, would like to do an interview outside, or, uh... in your room-

Ms. Negrosa: Let's just do the former. Cuz' damn does it smell like unwashed t-shirts in there!

*cut to the interviewing part where Ms. Negrosa sits on a foldable chair, albeit in a unique sitting manner that was surprisingly casual for a military jet pilot*

Ms. Negrosa: (*looks at camera*) What, never seen a member of the EDF sit like that before?

Doc: So, uh one question...

Ms. Negrosa: Huh?

Doc: What made you want to BE a pilot?

Ms. Negrosa: Woah, that was a question that I often get a lot, even from my pals in the EDF.

Ok, so, uh, long story short, I do, and do have a passion for flying

Doc: Flllyyiiing... what?

Ms. Negrosa: *awkward chuckles and scratches the back of her head before returning to her normal sitting position*

                       Jets, of course.

Doc: Why is that?

Ms. Negrosa: Well we had a family friend named Mr. Kai who was passionate. Passionate about... jets. And even jets as a whole.

[Cut to footage showing Mr. Kai's father (Mr. Tsing), then a bright-eyed young boy being brought by his father to a military jet garage in the army base, where the former stares in awe over what the latter was introducing to his son.]

His father was a military brat and thus actually told stories and gushed about childhood stories where he will be brought with by Mr. Kai's grandpa to the jet landing sites and even documented on artworks that were made by various artists on specific parts of the jets themselves.

Doc: So, uh, what does it lead to?

Ms. Negrosa: Well it's obvious, he's certainly crazy about jet models.

But one day when he was 21, his dream came true when he was enlisted into the EDF military to fight alien threats.

Doc: And then?

Ms. Negrosa: He was the guy who also gave me my signature baker boy cap and goggles that people keep associating me with.

Doc: Ok, but we heard that he died years ago. How did you feel when you heard that?

Ms. Negrosa: I kind of felt empty and sad actually. He's like a cool uncle to me, not saying that I don't have uncles and aunts, but I had an uncle who lived in Hawaii with his in-laws.

Doc: Ok but the past news did say that he died, crashing his jet into a building when a kaiju's hand swatted it.

[Cut to footage of a news flash from years ago that tells of the many lives lost during the previous war against the alien invaders and kaiju, including civilians, and even EDF frontline troops and jet pilots, one of which also mentioned and showed Mr. Kai, who was an unfortunate casualty to the said incident]

Ms. Negrosa: Yeah. It was a shocking death. My mum knew of him since she got married to my dad. And yes, I also need to mention how my Lola (grandma) was still living with us.

Doc: I felt that it was devastating too. Ok, but did your mum and you get along?

Ms. Negrosa: Sadly, no. Ever since Mr. Kai died, my mum had been forbidding me from chasing my dreams as a pilot since she was afraid that I'd end up dead just like him.

Doc: Well that's bad. So did you also happen to have prior military experience?

Ms. Negrosa: Does military school count?

*Doc and Carl answer with a simple "yes"*

Doc: So how did you end up in military school, and how was your experience there?

Ms. Negrosa: I was caught vandalizing as a teen, and my parents had to put me there. And about that experience, I think it's a double-edged sword.

[Footage shows Ms. Negrosa and her friends from military school doing what adolescents would do in such a place when not attending lessons, mainly hanging out, playing games, and having a whale of a time]

I got friends and learned more about some fun things, yet I realized that it's not a walk in a park, seeing as I was called slurs for just being Filipino.

And the fact that I was not feeling ready to face strict instructors who would not hold back on punishing me for mistakes I made during training sessions or even slacking off.

Doc: Ouch, that was pretty harsh!

Ms. Negrosa: Yes, it pretty much is.

*Ms. Negrosa then gets up from her foldable chair and folds it back into its original condition from when she found it.*

Doc: Ok before you leave, I have something to say.

Ms. Negrosa: What is it?

Doc: Was your mum, Mrs. Negrosa, an EDF member as well?

Ms. Negrosa: Yes, but she's now a retired veteran who still had a few rough patches of her time in the previous war against the Kaiju and alien forces.

Doc: Pretty ironic, isn't it?

*Ms. Negrosa nods her head with a worried expression on her face*

Ms. Negrosa: (*checks digital smart watch*) Ok,... but it's lunch break time now. Gotta hit the food court!

Doc: See ya! Thanks for talking with us.

Ms. Negrosa: Take care!

Doc: Thanks, pal. And to the viewers out there, thanks for watching.
