Family Reunion

Summary:

Mitsuki's eyes lingered on their linked hands for a second longer before she turned around again. The moment her eyes left them, they both let their shoulders slump. “I forgot how scary your mom is,” Kirishima whispered into Katsuki’s ear.

“I almost forgot too…."

OR: Bakugou sees his family for the first time in three years and realizes that there was a reason he wasn't missing them at all.

Work Text:

Bakugou’s shoulders were tense under Kirishima’s hands. They were standing in front of the door of Bakugou’s childhood home; they had been for the last five minutes. For the six years that Kirishima had known Bakugou, he’d never seen Bakugou this stiff. He felt Bakugou’s back spread under his hands as he took a deep breath, then Bakugou stuck his hand out, and Kirishima took it. Before Kirishima could blink, he was being pulled through the door and into the warm house. “Hey!” His boyfriend shouted over the many voices in the house. “We’re here!”

The sharp click-clack of heels hurried towards them. Bakugou Mitsuki hadn’t aged a day, but her face still pulled down in an ugly scowl. Bakugou’s hand immediately gripped Kirishima’s like a vice. “Took you long enough, brat!” Mitsuki shouted. “Come here! Who’d you bring with you!”

The two men walked into the kitchen and saw seven blond-haired relatives and their respective partners. Masaru made eye contact with Katsuki and dropped everything to rush over to his son. “Welcome! Sorry, it’s a bit loud. We’ve missed you!” The older man buried his son in a hug. Katsuki stilled for a second before placing his hand on his father’s back. He watched as his mom rolled her eyes and returned to the kitchen. Then his father’s eyes met Kirishima’s. “You’re Kirishima, right?”

Kirishima nodded eagerly and reached out to shake the man’s hand. “It’s very nice to meet you.”

“Kat, you’ve never brought someone before. What makes your friend so special?” At the word, ‘friend,’ Kirishima frowned, and Katsuki took a step closer to him. Katsuki told him that this would happen. It had been three years since he had seen any family, effectively skipping the couple’s coming out phase.

“He’s my boyfriend.” Katsuki bit out. The room went strangely quiet. He knew his parents might be wary of their relationship, but he hadn’t expected all of the eyes in the room to turn to the two men.

“Oh!” Masaru smiled with panicked eyes. “That’s amazing! You two seem to like each other a lot!”

“Did I hear that right?” Mitsuki called from the other side of the kitchen. “My brat finally brings someone home, and it’s a boy?!”

Katsuki pulled Kirishina until they were practically glued together. “Yup. We’ve been together for four years, and he is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, so I don’t want to hear another word about it, hag.”

“Ugh, fine, fine, I’ll leave you to it.” She waved her hand at her son in dismissal. Her eyes lingered on their linked hands for a second longer before she turned around again.

The moment her eyes left them, they both let their shoulders slump. “I forgot how scary your mom is,” Kirishima whispered into Katsuki’s ear.

“I almost forgot too… I have a feeling she’s not going to drop it. Sorry, Ei…” Katsuki’s eyes raked over the rest of the room and caught some of the guests lingering stares. “I don’t think the rest of my family is going to be overjoyed either.”

Eijirou turns to him with a comforting smile. “You told me this might happen, so as long as you don’t leave me in a room alone with your mom, I think I’ll be alright.”

Katuski lets out a low laugh and drops his head onto Eijirou’s shoulder. “Okay, I promise I won’t let that happen.”

“KATSUKI!” A high-pitched voice called out from across the room. Katsuki spun around to see his cousin waving at him frantically. She ran over, leaving her boyfriend to talk to the rest of their cousins. She collided with him in a hug, nearly knocking him over in the process. She pulled back and immediately began to talk. “Wow, you’re so different from the last time I saw you! It’s so good to see you! How long has it been?”

“Hey, Miyu. I don’t know. At least three years.” Katsuki’s voice was low and incredibly disinterested.

“And why’d you bring Red Riot with you?”

At the mention of his hero name, Kirishima blushed violently. Katsuki repressed a facepalm as he remembered how hero-obsessed she was as a kid. Kirishima ran a hand through his hair and extended the other hand for a handshake. “Kirishima Eijirou.” She eagerly reaches out and shakes his hand. “I’m Katsuki’s boyfriend.”

Miyu’s eyes widened. “Oh! You know how to pick ‘em, Katsuki!”

Katsuki’s forehead falls into his hand. “He’s the only one I’ve ever ‘picked.’” He grumbled.

Miyu pointedly ignores him. “Why haven’t I heard about this?”

Eijirou smiles fondly at Katsuki. “We’ve been trying to keep it from the media. Neither of us  really wants to deal with all of the extra stress.”

“All of those girls that love Red Riot are going to be so disappointed when they find out….” Her eyes dropped down to Kirishima’s chest. “So, are you fully gay?”

“Yes, we’re in a committed and very gay relationship,” Katsuki speaks through gritted teeth. Even when Katsuki spoke, Miyu’s eyes never let Kirishima.

“For how long?”

“Four years in a month, right Kat?” Katsuki grunts out an agreement.

“So, it’s not too serious then?” Something in her eyes finally made Katsuki snap.

Just as he was about to set off an explosion on her face, Kirishima reigns him in by raking a hand through his hair. “No, no! Of course not! I love Katsuki. I can’t imagine being with anyone else." Katsuki felt Eijirou’s lips brush his cheek and leaned into the touch.

Miyu scowled at them for a second before grumbling a goodbye and rejoining her boyfriend across the room. Kirishima turned to Katsuki. “For the record, babe, I seriously think you’re the only person on the planet who does it for me.” He leans down and presses his lips to Katsuki’s.

A gasp rings through the room. Katsuki turns violently around to see his aunt looking scandalized. “Oh, hey Aunt Yui, how are you?” Katsuki did his best to put on a cheerful voice. He turned towards her, and Kirishima kept his arm on his waist.

“Well, to be quite frank with you, I’m upset you would bring this display to our family gathering.” Her voice was shrill, and her eyes bore daggers into Katsuki.

Katsuki let out a light laugh and took a look behind him. “The food plate? No, of course, that wasn’t us.”

Eijirou caught his eyes and finally understood. “Yeah, if Katsuki decided to cook, it would’ve been way too good. I’m so lucky that he cooks for me every day.”

“Aww, thanks, babe.” Katsuki’s voice became sickly sweet, and his eyes traveled to meet his aunt’s in burning defiance before going back to meet Eijirou’s. “I’m so lucky to have you.”

Aunt Yui’s face screwed up in disgust. “There are children here!”

“Oh! I’m sorry if we had known we would’ve brought something for them! What a shame.” Eijirou said. “When we get back to our house, we’ll have to make sure to send them something in the mail.”

“No, I am talking about your blatant expression of homosexuality! If you do not stop this behavior, I will speak with your mother and have you kicked out of here!”

Katsuki just laughed, and his voice turned rough. “I fight murderous villains every day for my job. A cranky old lady like you doesn’t scare me. And the hag already knows. I also wouldn’t be talking if I were you. If my sources are correct, I just heard that your “perfect” straight marriage failed because you cheated on your husband. If you don’t mind leaving, I’m going to keep kissing my boyfriend, whom I love very much.”

The woman scoffed at them and stomped away towards the other aunts. All four of Katsuki’s aunts turned to look at him. He gave them a small wave before pulling Kirishima into a kiss. All of the women gasped. Kirishima pulled back with a wicked smile on his face. “Y’know, I think it’s really hot when you do that.”

Katsuki kisses him once again. “Yeah, I know.” He says, hiding his face in Eijirou’s shoulder.

Eijirou keeps a hand at Katsuki’s neck, keeping him in place. He lets his thumb stroke at the nape of Katsuki’s neck. Katsuki smiled to himself and let Kirishima play with his hair. Then the movement stopped all at once. “Hey, Kat, I think your mom is looking for you. I can see her looking at us from outside.”

Katsuki groans loudly. “Ugh, fine! Are you okay if I leave you alone for a while? I think you know by now that my family is a lot.”

“Don’t worry, babe, I’ve got this.” Kirishima gave him a confident smile.

Katsuki scoffed. “Okay, but if I’m not back in five minutes, come and find me.” Kirishima took his hand and squeezed it once before Katsuki walked away toward his mom.

He stepped outside onto the patio to sit on the couch with her. His mom didn’t hesitate to speak when the door closed behind him. “We haven’t seen you in three years, and you come in here with that boy… Did you think that I would just magically forget who he is? You started dating four years ago, and you just coincidentally decided to stop seeing us a year later?”

“Are you seriously saying this is Eijirou’s fault?” Usually, Katsuki would have held his tongue in front of his mother, but today he realized he didn’t have to anymore. “Maybe, three years ago, I graduated and began to work! I’ve worked almost every day since then! I’m sorry that I finally carved out time for you, and it isn’t enough!”

“Oh, forgive me, Katsuki, for wanting to see my son more than just on the TV! And I know you’re lying to me, brat! You would always visit before him! I knew he would change you!”

“Are you serious?! None of this is his fault! And maybe I did lie, maybe I didn’t, but that has nothing to do with him! It has everything to do with you! He would see how I would be after I visited you. You- you would berate me and scream at me every single time I visited you. You used to hit me ! What is he supposed to make of his boyfriend coming back with bruises on his face and chest? So, no, he didn’t make me do anything, but he was the first person to tell me that what you were doing wasn’t normal! He was the one who made me realize that I deserve better than to be abused. When I turned eighteen, I told him that I wanted space from you, and you know what he said? He said, ‘are you sure?’ He was the one that convinced me to come tonight, so maybe you should be happy that he’s in my life because he helped me be a better person!”

“Oh, you turned out fine! Don’t try to guilt-trip me about your childhood. You’re ungrateful!”

“Fine? I did not turn out fine! Tell that to Izuku, who watched you abuse me for years and then was bullied by me because I knew no other way to express my feelings! Because I thought that that was how people showed love! I’m so lucky he’s forgiven me! Ask Eijirou how many times I have woken up from nightmares about you about this house , screaming. I remember that time you hit me so hard that I had a huge bruise on my face, and you didn’t want anyone to know about it, so you kept me home from school until the bruise went away. I was so relieved when UA built those dorms because I was free! I was free from the daily abuse you would throw in my face. You’re lucky Eijirou convinced me to come tonight because I would’ve been much happier staying at home with him.”

Mitsuki scoffed at him and turned away. “I can’t believe he’s changed you so much. I don’t know you anymore.”

“No… You just never got to meet the version of me that isn’t getting abused by you. In that case, it was nice to meet you, mom; this is what I could have been. And thank you for this conversation. Now I can rest easy knowing that I will never miss this again.” Katsuki spun around to see Kirishima by the door. The redhead nodded, encouraging Katsuki to continue. “Just so you know, you won’t be invited to our wedding. Goodbye, mom.” He turned back to Eijirou, who wore a look of pride on his face. Katsuki walked up and took his boyfriend’s hands.

“Hey, Kat. Do you wanna head out?” Eijirou’s hands move up to rub Katsuki’s shoulders.

“No, let’s go up to my room.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah, I should probably see it one more time. I don’t think I’m going to come back here again.” Eijirou nodded and let Katsuki lead him upstairs. They turned into the room, and Eijirou couldn’t keep himself from smiling. “Wow…”

“I know, right? It’s exactly like I left it when I was 15.”

Eijirou took a look at all of the posters and collector’s items scattered across the room. “I didn’t realize you were such a nerd for All Might.”

“At least I wasn’t as bad as Deku. Speaking of…” Katsuki fished around his pockets to find his phone. “I promised I would tell him if I ever actually went through with… y’know.” He quickly found Deku’s contact and sent him a quick text. ‘I finally cut her off. For good.’ He shoved his phone back into his jeans. “Thank you, Ei.”

Eijirou moved to sit with him. “Why?”

“You spent an entire night with my horrendous extended family, and I don’t think I could’ve stood up to her like that if you weren’t there for me. I may be blood-related to these people, but none of them actually know anything about me. You do, Ei.” He pushed Kirishima until he was lying down. “They don’t eat dinner with me or talk about the future together late at night.” Katsuki grabbed his hands. “What I’m trying to say is that they’re not my family, Eijirou, you are.”

Katsuki watched a tear fall down Eijirou’s face. “You’re my family too, Katsuki. There’s no one else I’d rather spend my life with.”

“I love you, Ei.” Katsuki pulls Ejirou closer until his lips brush.

“I love you too.” Eijirou connected their lips and enjoyed the contact for a moment until Katsuki’s phone dinged. He opened his phone and saw one text from Deku. ‘I know you hate it when I say this, but I’m proud of you, Kacchan.’
