“Cunningham?”
Chrissy turns back towards him, still halfway out the door. Eddie’s face looks conflicted, like he’s warring with himself over what he’s about to say, but one side must win out because his expression shifts to resolve.
“Don’t let Carver give you any shit,” Eddie says firmly, “You could do a lot better.”
Chrissy is momentarily stunned. Nobody has ever said that. Her mother regularly says the opposite, that she is never going to do better than Jason, so she better hold on as tight as she can. Not to mention all the girls at school who would kill to be Jason Carver’s girlfriend. But Eddie had said it so easily, like he was so sure that it was the truth.
It shifts Chrissy’s entire world on its axis.

Chrissy breaks up with Jason at a party and leaves without knowing where she is going, or what she's looking for. But Eddie happens to see her walking alone at two in the morning and decides to offer the Queen of Hawkins High a ride in his van, altering both their lives forevermore.
