Happily ever after

Summary:

Sam and Bucky are finally moving in together, far away from Steve's eyes. He's still scared to look out of the window though.

Work Text:

“I don’t get why you’re so grumpy about Bucky and Sam moving in together” Carol says, dropping the box of baking supplies she was carrying on the kitchen counter. “You can’t stay Bucky’s roommate till the end of your life”

Steve shrugs but Carol can see he’s still pouting under his hunched shoulders.

“Come on, Shang Chi is a really cool guy. And I’m pretty sure his karaoke tendencies will be a better background noise than whatever Sam and Bucky were doing.”

She wiggles her eyebrows at him and he groans.

“Stop moping and keep sorting things out! Your new roomie is gonna need some space.” She pats the box she just put down. “Maria and I are gonna have a blast with all this shit.

“Yeah yeah, you’re welcome.”

Steve is staring wistfully at the living-room windows, he can see Sam’s empty apartment from here and he can’t help but feel a little sad. Sure, it’s been quite traumatic to have such a direct view of Sam and Bucky’s relationship, but he’s never liked living alone and he loved having his best friends nearby.

Sometimes he wishes Bucky had moved into Sam’s flat, maybe he could have endured the visual trauma a little longer, just to know they were still right there. But Sam being an overachiever had to find that really cute little house right next to Bucky’s job and now they were going to live the suburban dream no one thought they had. It was disgustingly cute.

He’d been sitting there staring at the apartment for so long, ignoring whatever Carol was telling him that it was honestly embarrassing how long it took him to realize Sam and Bucky were back in the apartment.

Steve desperately wanted to hang out with them, it felt like the end of an era. And even though they were just packing, and his arms had been requisitioned for the upcoming move, Sam had been extremely clear that no one was to show up during their packing time. Which, to be fair, was kinda weird.

“Oh, they’re back!” Steve did not jump at Carol’s voice. He did not, you have absolutely no proof that he did.

“Yeah, they’ll probably pack for like 10 minutes and then resume humping each other I guess”

Carol was looking at him like he was a lunatic, a lot of people had whenever he talked about the things he had seen through this window. Just as he looked away from Carol, he saw Sam kneel down in front of Bucky and let out a dramatic sigh.

“There we go, I can’t look at them anymore”

He turned around, staring at the stack of books at his feet, and wondering if he could sneak them somewhere else in the apartment.

“Oh my god, that’s so sweet!” Carol awed, which was not the usual reaction.

“Come on Carol that’s a bit pervy to keep watching them.”

“You’re so weird Rogers” She shrugged, her focus not wavering for one second. “Oh I gotta film that”

She took out her phone, avoiding Steve’s attempt to knock her phone out of her hands.

“Wait no! Why would you do that oh my god Carol!”

Unlucky for him, he kept forgetting how strong she was. She pushed him aside and started recording.

“They’re so gonna want to have a memory of this, I can’t believe Bucky’s crying.”

“Bucky’s crying?”

Steve whipped around and frowned. Something was off. Bucky was indeed crying, he was also still fully clothed, and holding his hands in front of his mouth. Sam was still kneeling though, he was holding something in his hands and it looked like…

“OH MY GOD SAM IS PROPOSING”

This was too much, Steve felt confused and dizzy and promptly fainted, landing squarely on Carol’s boots. Carol who barely spared a glance at Steve, pushing him away and zooming in on Sam and Bucky’s crying faces. And when they finally kissed and embraced, right after Sam slipped the ring on Bucky’s finger, she lowered her phone to get a good shot of Steve absolutely passed out in front of the view.
